lib/io.c has outlived its purpose. test_read() has exactly one caller,
lib/elf.c; test_write() has none at all; and test_seq_read() is a
declaration in test_util.h with no definition anywhere in the tree.
Both surviving helpers open with
TEST_ASSERT(count >= 0, "Unexpected count, count: %li", count);
which can never fire, because @count is a size_t. Building with -Wextra
points this out:
lib/io.c:51:27: warning: comparison of unsigned expression in '>= 0'
is always true [-Wtype-limits]
lib/io.c:128:27: warning: comparison of unsigned expression in '>= 0'
is always true [-Wtype-limits]
The comment above each assertion is worse than the assertion itself: it
cites the read(2) and write(2) manpages to claim that a count of zero is
allowed, but a zero count lands in "case 0" and fails the test outright.
The helper has never accepted what the comment promises.
Move test_read() into elf.c as a static elf_read(), named for what it
does rather than reading as "test the read() syscall", and assert that
@count is non-zero, which is what the code has always required and what
every caller already passes. Drop the commentary describing retry
behaviour that the code makes obvious. Nothing is then left in
lib/io.c, so remove the file along with test_write() and the stale
test_seq_read() declaration.
No functional change intended.

<bits/endian.h> is a glibc-internal header that explicitly states it
should never be included directly:
#error "Never use <bits/endian.h> directly; include <endian.h> instead."
Replace it with the correct public header <endian.h> which works on
all C libraries including musl. Building KVM selftests with musl-gcc
fails with:
lib/elf.c:10:10: fatal error: bits/endian.h: No such file or directory

Replace all variations of "vaddr" variables in KVM selftests with "gva",
with the exception of the ELF structures, as those fields are not specific
to guest virtual addresses, to complete the conversion from vm_vaddr_t to
gva_t.
Opportunistically use gva_t instead of u64 for relevant variables, and
fixup indentation as appropriate.
No functional change intended.

Now that KVM selftests use gva_t instead of vm_vaddr_t, drop "vaddr_" from
the core memory allocation APIs as the information is extraneous and does
more harm than good. E.g. the APIs don't _just_ allocate virtual memory,
they allocate backing physical memory and install mappings in the guest
page tables. And as proven by kmalloc() and malloc(), developers generally
expect that allocations come with a working virtual address.
Opportunistically clean up the function comment for vm_alloc(), and drop
the misleading and superfluous comments for its wrappers.
No functional change intended.

Use u64 instead of uint64_t to make the KVM selftests code more concise
and more similar to the kernel (since selftests are primarily developed
by kernel developers).
This commit was generated with the following command:
git ls-files tools/testing/selftests/kvm | xargs sed -i 's/uint64_t/u64/g'
Then by manually adjusting whitespace to make checkpatch.pl happy.
Include <linux/types.h> in include/kvm_util_types.h, iinclude/test_util.h,
and include/x86/pmu.h to pick up the tools-defined u64. Arguably, all
headers (especially kvm_util_types.h) should have already been including
stdint.h to get uint64_t from the libc headers, but the missing dependency
only rears its head once KVM uses u64 instead of uint64_t.

Replace all occurrences of vm_vaddr_t with gva_t to align with KVM code
and with the conversion helpers (e.g. addr_gva2hva()).

kvm_vm_elf_load() and elfhdr_get() open one file each, but they
never close the opened file descriptor. If a test repeatedly
creates and destroys a VM with __vm_create(), which
(directly or indirectly) calls those two functions, the test
might end up getting a open failure with EMFILE.
Fix those two functions to close the file descriptor.

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/kvmarm/kvmarm into HEAD
KVM/arm64 updates for 6.2
- Enable the per-vcpu dirty-ring tracking mechanism, together with an
option to keep the good old dirty log around for pages that are
dirtied by something other than a vcpu.
- Switch to the relaxed parallel fault handling, using RCU to delay
page table reclaim and giving better performance under load.
- Relax the MTE ABI, allowing a VMM to use the MAP_SHARED mapping
option, which multi-process VMMs such as crosvm rely on.
- Merge the pKVM shadow vcpu state tracking that allows the hypervisor
to have its own view of a vcpu, keeping that state private.
- Add support for the PMUv3p5 architecture revision, bringing support
for 64bit counters on systems that support it, and fix the
no-quite-compliant CHAIN-ed counter support for the machines that
actually exist out there.
- Fix a handful of minor issues around 52bit VA/PA support (64kB pages
only) as a prefix of the oncoming support for 4kB and 16kB pages.
- Add/Enable/Fix a bunch of selftests covering memslots, breakpoints,
stage-2 faults and access tracking. You name it, we got it, we
probably broke it.
- Pick a small set of documentation and spelling fixes, because no
good merge window would be complete without those.
As a side effect, this tag also drags:
- The 'kvmarm-fixes-6.1-3' tag as a dependency to the dirty-ring
series
- A shared branch with the arm64 tree that repaints all the system
registers to match the ARM ARM's naming, and resulting in
interesting conflicts

allocations
Now that kvm_vm allows specifying different memslots for code, page tables,
and data, use the appropriate memslot when making allocations in
common/libraty code. Change them accordingly:
- code (allocated by lib/elf) use the CODE memslot
- stacks, exception tables, and other core data pages (like the TSS in x86)
use the DATA memslot
- page tables and the PGD use the PT memslot
- test data (anything allocated with vm_vaddr_alloc()) uses the TEST_DATA
memslot
No functional change intended. All allocators keep using memslot #0.

Fold kvm_util_internal.h into kvm_util_base.h, i.e. make all KVM utility
stuff "public". Hiding struct implementations from tests has been a
massive failure, as it has led to pointless and poorly named wrappers,
unnecessarily opaque code, etc...
Not to mention that the approach was a complete failure as evidenced by
the non-zero number of tests that were including kvm_util_internal.h.

Refactor align() to work with non-pointers and split into separate
helpers for aligning up vs. down. Add align_ptr_up() for use with
pointers. Expose all helpers so that they can be used by tests and/or
other utilities. The align_down() helper in particular will be used to
ensure gpa alignment for hugepages.
No functional change intended.

bit math throughout the KVM selftests.]

Drop the memslot param(s) from vm_vaddr_alloc() now that all callers
directly specific '0' as the memslot. Drop the memslot param from
virt_pgd_alloc() as well since vm_vaddr_alloc() is its only user.
I.e. shove the hardcoded '0' down to the vm_phy_pages_alloc() calls.
