Peter Ujfalusi <peter.ujfalusi@linux.intel.com> says:
This series adds compressed audio support for SOF with IPC4 firmware.
Supported formats are PCM, MP3, AAC and VORBIS, the feature set is
PAUSE_PUSH/RELEASE, DRAIN and position reporting.
Patches 1-5 are prerequisites in the ALSA compress core and in
soc-compress.c.
These are core fixes rather than driver level workarounds on purpose.
The other users of compressed DPCM have DSP internal ports on their
BEs, driven by code they own. An Intel/SOF BE ends at a third party
CODEC driver which is shared with the non DPCM case and has no reason
to know that the FE is compressed. That set of CODECs is open ended,
so teaching each of them to cope with a compressed FE does not scale.
The core has to hand a BE the same substream state whether the FE is
a PCM or a compressed one.
Two of these patches change behaviour for the existing users of
compressed DPCM, so they would need a look from Qualcomm and NXP:
- "ASoC: soc-compress: Implement trigger FE-BE sequencing as with
normal PCMs" makes the FE/BE trigger order follow
dai_link->trigger[], the way dpcm_fe_dai_do_trigger() does it.
Neither sound/soc/qcom/ nor sound/soc/fsl/ sets it, so both default
to SND_SOC_DPCM_TRIGGER_PRE: START keeps the current order, but
STOP, SUSPEND and PAUSE_PUSH now trigger the BE before the FE.
- "ASoC: soc-compress: Stop running dpcm on free" sends a STOP trigger
from soc_compr_free_fe() if the DPCM is still in START state, which
is the case when the last trigger the stream received was a DRAIN.
Patches 6-20 implement the IPC4 compressed support, patch 21 is a
Kconfig cleanup. The last two patches enable the feature, in Kconfig
for TGL and later and in the topology parser, so the compressed device
type only becomes usable once the code behind it is in place.
Testing:
- IPC4: Arrow Lake, compressed playback on speaker and headphone
(cs42l43), MP3, AAC and VORBIS.
- IPC3: tested by NXP. This does not cover the STOP on free path
above, as they do not implement DRAIN.

sdca_asoc_populate_dais() sets each DAI id from the SDCA Function's
entity array index. ASoC's default of_xlate_dai_name treats the
phandle cell as a positional index into the DAI list, so on a Function
with non-DAI entries between dataport entities a sound-dai phandle
resolves to the wrong DAI.
Register a custom of_xlate_dai_name that walks the entity array and
returns the dataport entity whose array index matches the cell value.

Add struct sdca_class_ops with a populate_function callback that lets
codec drivers supply the SDCA topology (entities, clusters,
init_table, ...) from static tables in place of sdca_parse_function()
on DT/non-DisCo platforms. The callback is a pure data source and
performs no bus I/O.
Codec drivers embed sdca_class_drv in their own priv and register
their populate_function through class_ops passed to
sdca_class_probe().

The class PM callbacks pull sdca_class_drv out of drvdata, so the
built-in class_sdw_driver owns the drvdata slot. That works for the
generic case but blocks codec drivers that want to embed
sdca_class_drv in their own private struct -- they need drvdata for
their codec priv.
Split the four callbacks into exported helpers that take a
struct sdca_class_drv * directly:
sdca_class_system_suspend()
sdca_class_system_resume()
sdca_class_runtime_suspend()
sdca_class_runtime_resume()
Codec drivers can now compose these into their own dev_pm_ops without
going through drvdata.
For the built-in class_sdw_driver, add small dev_pm_ops wrappers that
fetch drv from drvdata and wire them into sdca_class_pm_ops. The ops
struct itself stays private to this file; codec drivers build their
own dev_pm_ops from the four exported helpers above.
No functional change: the built-in class_sdw_driver keeps the same PM
semantics; only the internal plumbing shifts to operate on
sdca_class_drv instead of struct device *dev.

Currently there are some race conditions around the boot of SDCA
jack detection. The core creates DAPM widgets/routes quite a
long time before it creates the associated ALSA control, and
the jack detection IRQ is currently registered in component
probe. At the time of component probe, the DAPM widgets exist,
shortly after this the DAPM routes are added. At the time the DAPM
routes are added the register value for the control is checked
and the appropriate path is connected. The existing handling
in the SDCA jack IRQ handles the case the control doesn't exist
and updates the registers directly, which works until the DAPM
routes are added. After the routes are added the DAPM graph has
already set connected on a particular DAPM path, which will not
be updated until an IRQ is received when the control is present.
Thus those updates are usually not reflected in the resulting
DAPM graph which can lead to the audio path being erroneously
powered on/off.
Switch to the new fixup_controls callback to register the
IRQs, this is guaranteed to run after all the controls have
been created. Which means we can avoid the aforementioned race
condition and as a bonus no longer need to concern ourselves
with a case where the IRQ handler runs and the ALSA control
is unavailable.

The SDCA IRQs are split into two groups, those registered at bus probe
time (basically just FDL) and those registered at component time.
There currently exists only a single cleanup function, if the FDL IRQ
is freed at component time, then nothing would re-register it if the
component is probed again. But the IRQs depending on a component need
to be freed if the card is destroyed so they can't use stale
components.
Split the clean up into two functions one for the component level and
one for the bus level.

The class driver internally has an array of sdca_function_data pointers
that it uses to store the parsed DisCo data. However, there is already
an sdca_function_data attached to the auxdev device. It makes more sense
to use the one already provided in the auxdev device, as it could also
be used by custom drivers for parts that require those.
Using the auxdev copy also prevents the need for the class function
drivers to search through the array for the correct data, which
currently is based off matching the function type. This has problems
when two functions have the same type as the current code will find the
same data for both drivers, using the auxdev copy of the data avoids
this problem.

Charles Keepax <ckeepax@opensource.cirrus.com> says:
Another round of SDCA fixes a couple of fix to the IRQ cleanup
from Richard, and a minor tweak to the IRQ handling from me.
|
|
Ensure that all interrupt handlers are unregistered before the parent
regmap_irq is unregistered.
sdca_irq_cleanup() was only called from the component_remove(). If the
module was loaded and removed without ever being component probed the
FDL interrupts would not be unregistered and this would hit a WARN
when devm called regmap_del_irq_chip() during the removal of the
parent IRQ.

IRQs are enabled through sdca_irq_populate() from component probe
using devm_request_threaded_irq(), this however means the IRQs can
persist if the sound card is torn down. Some of the IRQ handlers
store references to the card and the kcontrols which can then
fail. Some detail of the crash was explained in [1].
Generally it is not advised to use devm outside of bus probe, so
the code is updated to not use devm. The IRQ requests are not moved
to bus probe time as it makes passing the snd_soc_component into
the IRQs very awkward and would the require a second step once the
component is available, so it is simpler to just register the IRQs
at this point, even though that necessitates some manual cleanup.

The SDCA class driver currently expects the device will be fully powered
down on system suspend but not on runtime suspend. This is typically
required as when audio is not active (ie. runtime suspend) jack detect
is expected to still function, but when the whole system is hibernated
there is no need to recognise audio jack events. This means the class
driver needs to always be informed of a system suspend, so the direct
complete optimisation (where PM will skip calling system suspend if the
device is runtime suspended) is not appropriate for the SDCA class
driver.
Add the NO_DIRECT_COMPLETE flag to prevent this optimisation from
running against this driver.
