2026-09-04treewide: refresh kmalloc_obj() conversionsKees Cook
This is another run of the Coccinelle script for converting kmalloc() family of allocations to kmalloc_obj() via the existing rules in scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci This catches both the set of kmalloc() uses added since the first kmalloc_obj() conversions in v7.0 and adds a large group missed in the first pass due to Coccinelle not interacting well with the cleanup.h scoped_...() family of macros[1]. I worked around this with spatch's "--macro-file" argument to a file with all the scoped_...() macros mapped to Coccinelle's YACFE_ITERATOR[2] as that was the closest viable control flow indicator I could find. Build tested allmodconfig on x86, arm64, arm, loongarch, mips, powerpc, riscv, and s390 with no new warnings. 2026-08-10ALSA: seq: Use RCU for the virmidi file listTakashi Iwai
Each virmidi device keeps a list of its opened input files (filelist) protected by both an rwlock (filelist_lock) and a rw_semaphore (filelist_sem). snd_virmidi_dev_receive_event() walks the list on the sequencer event input path -- read_lock() when the event is delivered in atomic context, down_read() otherwise -- decoding each incoming event into the file's rawmidi buffer. The writers (input open/close) take both locks to add/remove entries. This is another typical dual-lock read-mostly pattern as the port subscriber list: files are opened/closed rarely while the receive callback runs per event. Let's convert the traversal to RCU and drop the rwlock; the existing filelist_sem keeps serializing the writers. The atomic input path now runs lock-free under rcu_read_lock(), and both readers share a single list_for_each_entry_rcu() (valid under the rwsem via lockdep_is_held()). The writers switch to list_add_tail_rcu() / list_del_rcu(). snd_virmidi_input_close() freed the entry (parser and struct) immediately after list_del. A concurrent lockless reader in the atomic path may still be dereferencing it, so the close path now waits for an RCU grace period after list_del_rcu() before freeing; synchronize_rcu() is used rather than kfree_rcu() because the parser must also be released after the grace period, not just the struct. Non-atomic readers are already excluded by the down_write, so only the atomic RCU readers need the grace period. Dropping write_lock_irq() from the writers is safe: no writer runs in atomic/IRQ context, and the sole atomic reader now uses RCU, which is IRQ-safe. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>
2025-12-17ALSA: seq: Relax __free() variable declarationsTakashi Iwai
We used to have a variable declaration with __free() initialized with NULL. This was to keep the old coding style rule, but recently it's relaxed and rather recommends to follow the new rule to declare in place of use for __free() -- which avoids potential deadlocks or UAFs with nested cleanups. Although the current code has no bug, per se, let's follow the new standard and move the declaration to the place of assignment (or directly assign the allocated result) instead of NULL initializations. Note that there is a remaining __free() with NULL initialization; it's because of the non-trivial code conditionally assigning the data. 2023-05-23ALSA: seq: Add port direction to snd_seq_port_infoTakashi Iwai
Add a new field "direction" to snd_seq_port_info for allowing a client to tell the expected direction of the port access. A port might still allow subscriptions for read/write (e.g. for MIDI-CI) even if the primary usage of the port is a single direction (either input or output only). This new "direction" field can help to indicate such cases. When the direction is unspecified at creating a port and the port has either read or write capability, the corresponding direction bits are set automatically as default. 2020-03-16ALSA: seq: virmidi: Fix running status after receiving sysexTakashi Iwai
The virmidi driver handles sysex event exceptionally in a short-cut snd_seq_dump_var_event() call, but this missed the reset of the running status. As a result, it may lead to an incomplete command right after the sysex when an event with the same running status was queued. Fix it by clearing the running status properly via alling snd_midi_event_reset_decode() for that code path. 2018-08-14ALSA: seq: virmidi: Fix discarding the unsubscribed outputTakashi Iwai
The recent change to move the virmidi output processing to a work slightly modified the code to discard the unsubscribed outputs so that it works without a temporary buffer. However, this is actually buggy, and may spew a kernel warning due to the unexpected call of snd_rawmidi_transmit_ack(), as triggered by syzbot. This patch takes back to the original code in that part, use a temporary buffer and simply repeat snd_rawmidi_transmit(), in order to address the regression. 2018-08-01ALSA: seq: Minor cleanup of MIDI event parser helpersTakashi Iwai
snd_midi_event_encode_byte() can never fail, and it can return rather true/false. Change the return type to bool, adjust the argument to receive a MIDI byte as unsigned char, and adjust the comment accordingly. This allows callers to drop error checks, which simplifies the code. Meanwhile, snd_midi_event_encode() helper is used only in seq_midi.c, and it can be better folded into it. This will reduce the total amount of lines in the end. 2018-07-30ALSA: seq: virmidi: Offload the output event processingTakashi Iwai
The virmidi sequencer stuff tries to translate the rawmidi bytes to sequencer events and deliver the packets at trigger callback. The amount of the whole process of these translations and deliveries depends on the incoming rawmidi bytes, and we have no limit for that; this was the cause of a CPU soft lockup that had been reported and fixed recently. Although we've fixed the soft lockup by putting the temporary unlock and cond_resched(), it's rather a quick band aid. In this patch, meanwhile, the event parsing and delivery process is offloaded to a dedicated work, and the trigger callback just kicks it off. It has three merits, at least: - The processing is always done in a sleepable context, which can assure the event delivery with non-atomic flag without hackish is_atomic() usage. - Other relevant codes can be simplified, reducing the lines - It makes me happier Signed-off-by: Takashi Iwai <tiwai@suse.de>
2018-07-27ALSA: virmidi: Fix too long output trigger loopTakashi Iwai
The virmidi output trigger tries to parse the all available bytes and process sequencer events as much as possible. In a normal situation, this is supposed to be relatively short, but a program may give a huge buffer and it'll take a long time in a single spin lock, which may eventually lead to a soft lockup. This patch simply adds a workaround, a cond_resched() call in the loop if applicable. A better solution would be to move the event processor into a work, but let's put a duct-tape quickly at first. 2018-04-27ALSA: seq: Fix races at MIDI encoding in snd_virmidi_output_trigger()Takashi Iwai
The sequencer virmidi code has an open race at its output trigger callback: namely, virmidi keeps only one event packet for processing while it doesn't protect for concurrent output trigger calls. snd_virmidi_output_trigger() tries to process the previously unfinished event before starting encoding the given MIDI stream, but this is done without any lock. Meanwhile, if another rawmidi stream starts the output trigger, this proceeds further, and overwrites the event package that is being processed in another thread. This eventually corrupts and may lead to the invalid memory access if the event type is like SYSEX. The fix is just to move the spinlock to cover both the pending event and the new stream. The bug was spotted by a new fuzzer, RaceFuzzer. 2017-10-09ALSA: seq: Fix copy_from_user() call inside lockTakashi Iwai
The event handler in the virmidi sequencer code takes a read-lock for the linked list traverse, while it's calling snd_seq_dump_var_event() in the loop. The latter function may expand the user-space data depending on the event type. It eventually invokes copy_from_user(), which might be a potential dead-lock. The sequencer core guarantees that the user-space data is passed only with atomic=0 argument, but snd_virmidi_dev_receive_event() ignores it and always takes read-lock(). For avoiding the problem above, this patch introduces rwsem for non-atomic case, while keeping rwlock for atomic case. Also while we're at it: the superfluous irq flags is dropped in snd_virmidi_input_open(). We may use snd_rawmidi_transmit() in a loop just for consuming the input data, but even there, there is a race between snd_rawmidi_transmit_peek() and snd_rawmidi_tranmit_ack(). Similarly in the latter case, it calls snd_rawmidi_transmit_peek() and snd_rawmidi_tranmit_ack() separately without protection, so they are racy as well. The patch tries to address these issues by the following ways: - Introduce the unlocked versions of snd_rawmidi_transmit_peek() and snd_rawmidi_transmit_ack() to be called inside the explicit lock. - Rewrite snd_rawmidi_transmit() to be race-free (the former case). - Make the split calls (the latter case) protected in the rawmidi spin lock. 2007-02-14[PATCH] remove many unneeded #includes of sched.hTim Schmielau
After Al Viro (finally) succeeded in removing the sched.h #include in module.h recently, it makes sense again to remove other superfluous sched.h includes. There are quite a lot of files which include it but don't actually need anything defined in there. Presumably these includes were once needed for macros that used to live in sched.h, but moved to other header files in the course of cleaning it up. To ease the pain, this time I did not fiddle with any header files and only removed #includes from .c-files, which tend to cause less trouble. Compile tested against 2.6.20-rc2 and 2.6.20-rc2-mm2 (with offsets) on alpha, arm, i386, ia64, mips, powerpc, and x86_64 with allnoconfig, defconfig, allmodconfig, and allyesconfig as well as a few randconfigs on x86_64 and all configs in arch/arm/configs on arm. I also checked that no new warnings were introduced by the patch (actually, some warnings are removed that were emitted by unnecessarily included header files). 2007-02-09[ALSA] alsa core: convert to list_for_each_entry*Johannes Berg
This patch converts most uses of list_for_each to list_for_each_entry all across alsa. In some place apparently an item can be on a list with different pointers so of course that isn't compatible with list_for_each, I therefore didn't touch those places. 2006-06-22[ALSA] add more sequencer port type information bitsClemens Ladisch
Add four new information flags SNDRV_SEQ_PORT_TYPE_HARDWARE, _SOFTWARE, _SYNTHESIZER, _PORT for sequencer ports. This makes it easier for apps like Rosegarden to make policy decisions based on the port type. Signed-off-by: Clemens Ladisch <clemens@ladisch.de>

2006-01-03[ALSA] seq: set client name in snd_seq_create_kernel_client()Clemens Ladisch
All users of snd_seq_create_kernel_client() have to set the client name anyway, so we can just pass the name as parameter. This relieves us from having to muck around with a struct snd_seq_client_info in these cases. Signed-off-by: Clemens Ladisch <clemens@ladisch.de>
2006-01-03[ALSA] seq: remove struct snd_seq_client_callbackClemens Ladisch
The fields of struct snd_seq_client_callback either aren't used or are always set to the same value, so we can get rid of it altogether. Signed-off-by: Clemens Ladisch <clemens@ladisch.de>

2005-04-16Linux-2.6.12-rc2v2.6.12-rc2Linus Torvalds
Initial git repository build. I'm not bothering with the full history, even though we have it. We can create a separate "historical" git archive of that later if we want to, and in the meantime it's about 3.2GB when imported into git - space that would just make the early git days unnecessarily complicated, when we don't have a lot of good infrastructure for it. Let it rip!
