2026-09-23fou: reject omitted FOU_ATTR_IPPROTO on FOU_ENCAP_DIRECTHui Peng
Commit 7a9bc9e3f423 ("fou: Don't allow 0 for FOU_ATTR_IPPROTO.") added NLA_POLICY_MIN(NLA_U8, 1) to fou_nl_policy[FOU_ATTR_IPPROTO], which rejects an explicitly supplied FOU_ATTR_IPPROTO == 0 attribute with -ERANGE. However, FOU_ATTR_IPPROTO is an optional netlink attribute. When a user sends FOU_CMD_ADD with FOU_ATTR_TYPE set to FOU_ENCAP_DIRECT and omits FOU_ATTR_IPPROTO entirely, nla_policy validation succeeds and parse_nl_config() leaves cfg->protocol as 0 (from memset(cfg, 0, sizeof(*cfg))). fou_create() then creates a FOU_ENCAP_DIRECT socket with fou->protocol == 0. In fou_udp_recv(), returning -fou->protocol to udp_queue_rcv_one_skb() triggers IP protocol resubmission when fou->protocol > 0, whereas returning 0 tells the UDP tunnel layer that the skb was consumed without freeing it. When fou->protocol == 0, every packet received on the socket returns 0 from fou_udp_recv() and leaks the sk_buff. Reject FOU_ENCAP_DIRECT when !cfg->protocol in fou_create() so that creating a direct encapsulation port without FOU_ATTR_IPPROTO fails with -EINVAL while leaving FOU_CMD_DEL and FOU_CMD_GET (which share parse_nl_config()) unaffected. Tested in QEMU against Linux 7.3.0-rc3 by sending a FOU_CMD_ADD Generic Netlink request with FOU_ATTR_PORT = 5555 and FOU_ATTR_TYPE = FOU_ENCAP_DIRECT while omitting FOU_ATTR_IPPROTO. On the unfixed kernel, FOU_CMD_ADD succeeds (err = 0), FOU_CMD_GET reports fou->type = 1 and fou->protocol = 0, and sending 4000 UDP packets to 127.0.0.1:5555 leaks all 4000 sk_buffs (SUnreclaim in /proc/meminfo grows from 41456 kB to 59008 kB, +17552 kB); with this patch applied, FOU_CMD_ADD is rejected with -EINVAL (-22). 2026-07-28fou: Fix use-after-free in fou_create()Xuanqiang Luo
fou_create() publishes struct fou through sk_user_data before adding the new FOU port to the per-netns list. If fou_add_to_port_list() fails, the error path frees fou while it is still reachable through sk_user_data. A concurrent receive can then dereference the freed object in fou_from_sock(). This ordering issue was previously noted in the linked discussion. The failure is reachable when local port 0 is requested. Each socket binds to a different ephemeral port, but fou_cfg_cmp() compares the requested port 0 and reports -EALREADY once an entry already exists. Release the tunnel socket before freeing fou so sk_user_data is cleared first, and defer reclamation with kfree_rcu() to protect concurrent RCU readers. This matches the lifetime handling in fou_release(). 2026-07-22udp: Support BIG TCP GSO packets where they can occurAlice Mikityanska
Wherever a GSO packet can occur, and its length is used to fill the UDP header, use udp_set_len that assigns 0 if the length doesn't fit 16 bits, so that the packet can be properly parsed and segmented later, instead of having truncated length. Use udp_get_len in udp_validate_len to treat BIG TCP packets as valid. 2026-07-22net: Use helpers to get/set UDP len tree-wideAlice Mikityanska
Since BIG TCP for UDP tunnels will start using len=0 in the UDP header as an indicator of a GSO packet bigger than 65535 bytes, this commit introduces the following getter and setters to use tree-wide, in order to explicitly mark places where len=0 may be expected, and handle them properly: 1. udp_set_len() sets uh->len to its real value if it's not bigger than 65535, and to 0 otherwise: to be used in GSO context with aggregated packets. 2. udp_set_len_short() is to be used when the length is known to fit 16 bits. It WARNs when the caller tries to assign a bigger value if CONFIG_DEBUG_NET=y. 3. udp_get_len_short() returns len in host byte order: to be used on the RX side to deal with non-aggregated packets, or to access the raw value of the len field. 4. udp_get_len() decodes uh->len set by udp_set_len(). It checks whether the packet is GSO to guard from malformed packets. At the moment udp_set_len() is not used, a following commit will start using it after enabling len>65535 for GSO. Raw uh->len (in network byte order) is still accessed in a few places for checksum calculation purposes, and to decode len=0 in udpv6_rcv for jumbograms. udp_rcv and udpv6_rcv will be addressed by the commit that starts using udp_set_len() to set UDP len=0 for BIG TCP packets in UDP tunnels. 2026-05-05fou: Store struct sock in struct fou.Kuniyuki Iwashima
fou does not need to access struct socket itself in the fast path; it only reads struct sock, and struct socket is only used for tunnel setup and teardown. Let's store struct sock directly in struct fou. fou_release() frees struct fou with kfree_rcu(), so fou no longer needs synchronize_rcu() in udp_tunnel_sock_release(). Note that the error path in fou_create() looks buggy; once the tunnel is set up and fou_add_to_port_list() fails, struct fou should be freed with kfree_rcu() _after_ udp_tunnel_sock_release(). None of the udp_tunnel users need struct socket in their fast paths; it is only used for tunnel setup / teardown. Even setup_udp_tunnel_sock() does not need struct socket. 2026-05-05udp_tunnel: Pass struct sock to udp_tunnel_sock_release().Kuniyuki Iwashima
None of the udp_tunnel users need struct socket in their fast paths; it is only used for tunnel setup / teardown. While the UDP tunnel interface accepts struct socket, this encourages users to store the pointer unnecessarily. This leads to extra dereferences when accessing struct sock fields (e.g., sk->sk_user_data instead of sock->sk->sk_user_data). Furthermore, these dereferences necessitate synchronize_rcu() in udp_tunnel_sock_release() to protect the fast paths from sock_orphan() setting sk->sk_socket to NULL. This overhead can be avoided if users store the struct sock pointer directly in their private structures. As a prep, let's change udp_tunnel_sock_release() to take struct sock instead of struct socket. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) 2024-09-04fou: Fix null-ptr-deref in GRO.Kuniyuki Iwashima
We observed a null-ptr-deref in fou_gro_receive() while shutting down a host. [0] The NULL pointer is sk->sk_user_data, and the offset 8 is of protocol in struct fou. When fou_release() is called due to netns dismantle or explicit tunnel teardown, udp_tunnel_sock_release() sets NULL to sk->sk_user_data. Then, the tunnel socket is destroyed after a single RCU grace period. So, in-flight udp4_gro_receive() could find the socket and execute the FOU GRO handler, where sk->sk_user_data could be NULL. Let's use rcu_dereference_sk_user_data() in fou_from_sock() and add NULL checks in FOU GRO handlers. The warning was previously reduced from WARN_ON to WARN_ON_ONCE in commit 270136613bf7 ("fou: Do WARN_ON_ONCE in gue_gro_receive for bad proto callbacks"). 2024-03-05net: gro: rename skb_gro_header_hard()Eric Dumazet
skb_gro_header_hard() is renamed to skb_gro_may_pull() to match the convention used by common helpers like pskb_may_pull(). This means the condition is inverted: if (skb_gro_header_hard(skb, hlen)) slow_path(); becomes: if (!skb_gro_may_pull(skb, hlen)) slow_path(); Signed-off-by: Eric Dumazet <edumazet@google.com> Acked-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com>
2023-04-12bpf,fou: Add bpf_skb_{set,get}_fou_encap kfuncsChristian Ehrig
Add two new kfuncs that allow a BPF tc-hook, installed on an ipip device in collect-metadata mode, to control FOU encap parameters on a per-packet level. The set of kfuncs is registered with the fou module. The bpf_skb_set_fou_encap kfunc is supposed to be used in tandem and after a successful call to the bpf_skb_set_tunnel_key bpf-helper. UDP source and destination ports can be controlled by passing a struct bpf_fou_encap. A source port of zero will auto-assign a source port. enum bpf_fou_encap_type is used to specify if the egress path should FOU or GUE encap the packet. On the ingress path bpf_skb_get_fou_encap can be used to read UDP source and destination ports from the receiver's point of view and allows for packet multiplexing across different destination ports within a single BPF program and ipip device. 2023-01-24net: fou: use policy and operation tables generated from the specJakub Kicinski
Generate and plug in the spec-based tables. A little bit of renaming is needed in the FOU code. Acked-by: Stanislav Fomichev <sdf@google.com> Signed-off-by: Jakub Kicinski <kuba@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Paolo Abeni <pabeni@redhat.com>
2023-01-24net: fou: rename the source for linkingJakub Kicinski
We'll need to link two objects together to form the fou module. This means the source can't be called fou, the build system expects fou.o to be the combined object.
