In reset_per_cpu_data(), al is computed as:
al = sizeof(struct net_dm_alert_msg);
al += dm_hit_limit * sizeof(struct net_dm_drop_point);
al += sizeof(struct nlattr);
skb = genlmsg_new(al, GFP_KERNEL);
...
nla = nla_reserve(skb, NLA_UNSPEC, sizeof(struct net_dm_alert_msg));
...
msg = nla_data(nla);
memset(msg, 0, al);
Because al includes sizeof(struct nlattr) (the 4-byte attribute header),
genlmsg_new() allocates al bytes of tailroom starting at nla.
However, msg points to nla_data(nla), which is located
sizeof(struct nlattr) bytes past nla. Calling memset(msg, 0, al)
therefore writes al bytes starting from msg, exceeding the allocated
buffer by sizeof(struct nlattr) (4 bytes) and corrupting
skb_shared_info.
Fix this by letting al represent only the payload length, allocating
the skb with genlmsg_new(nla_total_size(al), GFP_KERNEL), and zeroing
al bytes from msg.

syzbot reported a preemption warning in sk_skb_reason_drop():
BUG: using smp_processor_id() in preemptible [00000000] code: syz.0.17/5917
caller is net_dm_packet_trace_kfree_skb_hit+0x119/0x350 net/core/drop_monitor.c:519
In net_dm_packet_trace_kfree_skb_hit(), data = this_cpu_ptr(&dm_cpu_data)
is evaluated before spin_lock_irqsave(&data->drop_queue.lock, flags).
When kfree_skb() is called from preemptible context (e.g. process context
during close() on /dev/net/tun), preemption is enabled, triggering the
CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT warning in smp_processor_id().
The same pattern exists in net_dm_hw_trap_summary_probe() and
net_dm_hw_trap_packet_probe() for dm_hw_cpu_data.
This is a false positive because each per-cpu structure is protected
by its own spinlock. If the task migrates to another CPU right after
reading the per-cpu pointer, the lock still safely synchronizes
access to that queue.
Use raw_cpu_ptr() instead of this_cpu_ptr() to silence
CONFIG_DEBUG_PREEMPT without disturbing interrupt state or breaking
PREEMPT_RT locking semantics.

teardown
In drop_monitor teardown paths (net_dm_trace_off_set(),
net_dm_hw_monitor_stop(), and error unwind paths in net_dm_trace_on_set()
and net_dm_hw_monitor_start()), per-CPU timers are stopped using
timer_delete_sync() followed by cancel_work_sync().
However, there is a circular dependency between send_timer and
dm_alert_work:
1) sched_send_work() (timer callback) schedules dm_alert_work.
2) send_dm_alert() / net_dm_hw_summary_work() calls reset_per_cpu_data()
or net_dm_hw_reset_per_cpu_data().
3) If memory allocation fails under memory pressure in the reset
function, it re-arms the timer via mod_timer(&data->send_timer, ...).
If dm_alert_work is running concurrently while timer_delete_sync()
executes on another CPU, an allocation failure in the worker will
re-arm the timer after timer_delete_sync() has already returned.
Once cancel_work_sync() completes and module_put() is called, the timer
remains active in the timer wheel. If the module is then unloaded, the
timer will fire and execute sched_send_work() in freed memory,
triggering a kernel panic / use-after-free.
Switch from timer_delete_sync() to timer_shutdown_sync(). This guarantees
that any in-flight timer handler has finished and prevents subsequent
re-arming attempts from running workers from succeeding. When monitoring
is restarted later, timer_setup() is invoked, which cleanly
re-initializes the timer.

If register_trace_napi_poll() fails in net_dm_trace_on_set(),
unregister_trace_kfree_skb() is called to roll back the kfree_skb
tracepoint registration.
However, tracepoint_synchronize_unregister() is omitted before calling
cancel_work_sync() and module_put(). An in-flight probe executing
concurrently on another CPU could call schedule_work() after
cancel_work_sync() has already returned, leaving a pending work item
scheduled after the module reference is dropped. If the module is then
unloaded, executing the work item triggers a kernel panic.
Add tracepoint_synchronize_unregister() after unregister_trace_kfree_skb()
in the error path, matching net_dm_trace_off_set() and
net_dm_hw_probe_unregister().

In net_dm_packet_trace_kfree_skb_hit() and net_dm_hw_trap_packet_probe(),
u64_stats_update_begin() / u64_stats_inc() / u64_stats_update_end() were
called after spin_unlock_irqrestore(&...drop_queue.lock, flags), when local
IRQs had already been re-enabled.
Tracepoint probes can execute in IRQ or softirq context. On 32-bit
architectures, u64_stats_update_begin() disables preemption but not interrupts,
relying on seqcount writes. If a nested interrupt occurs on the same CPU during
the 64-bit stats update, the reentrant seqcount update can corrupt the
seqcount state or stats value.
Fix this by performing the 64-bit per-CPU stats update before releasing
drop_queue.lock via spin_unlock_irqrestore(), ensuring local interrupts remain
disabled during the u64_stats update.

net_dm_packet_report_fill() and net_dm_hw_packet_report_fill() use
nla_put_u64_64bit() to append 64-bit attributes (NET_DM_ATTR_PC and
NET_DM_ATTR_TIMESTAMP).
On 32-bit architectures without CONFIG_HAVE_EFFICIENT_UNALIGNED_ACCESS,
nla_put_u64_64bit() may append a 4-byte NET_DM_ATTR_PAD attribute for
64-bit alignment.
However, net_dm_packet_report_size() and net_dm_hw_packet_report_size()
used nla_total_size(sizeof(u64)) instead of nla_total_size_64bit(sizeof(u64)),
budgeting 12 bytes instead of up to 16 bytes.
This under-estimation of SKB size can lead to an skb_over_panic() when
__nla_reserve() or skb_put() is subsequently called.
Fix this by using nla_total_size_64bit(sizeof(u64)) in both size calculations.

net_dm_packet_report_fill() and net_dm_hw_packet_report_fill() open code
the NET_DM_ATTR_PAYLOAD attribute to avoid zeroing the packet payload
before overwriting it with skb_copy_bits().
skb_put() reserves nla_total_size(payload_len), i.e. the header plus the
NLA_ALIGN() padding, but only payload_len bytes are copied in. When
payload_len is not a multiple of 4 the 1-3 padding bytes are never
initialized and are leaked to user space inside the netlink message.
KMSAN confirms the leak for the software path when the packet payload

This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split
over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the
resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next
line.
Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for
me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the
middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial.
So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the
syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed'
scripts.
The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want
whitespace cleanup anyway.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

If drop_monitor is built as a kernel module, syzkaller may have time
to send a netlink NET_DM_CMD_START message during the module loading.
This will call the net_dm_monitor_start() function that uses
a spinlock that has not yet been initialized.
To fix this, let's place resource initialization above the registration
of a generic netlink family.

skb does not include enough information to find out receiving
sockets/services and netns/containers on packet drops. In theory
skb->dev tells about netns, but it can get cleared/reused, e.g. by TCP
stack for OOO packet lookup. Similarly, skb->sk often identifies a local
sender, and tells nothing about a receiver.
Allow passing an extra receiving socket to the tracepoint to improve

As explained in commit e03781879a0d ("drop_monitor: Require
'CAP_SYS_ADMIN' when joining "events" group"), the "flags" field in the
multicast group structure reuses uAPI flags despite the field not being
exposed to user space. This makes it impossible to extend its use
without adding new uAPI flags, which is inappropriate for internal
kernel checks.
Solve this by adding internal flags (i.e., "GENL_MCAST_*") and convert
the existing users to use them instead of the uAPI flags.
Tested using the reproducers in commit 44ec98ea5ea9 ("psample: Require
'CAP_NET_ADMIN' when joining "packets" group") and commit e03781879a0d

The "NET_DM" generic netlink family notifies drop locations over the
"events" multicast group. This is problematic since by default generic
netlink allows non-root users to listen to these notifications.
Fix by adding a new field to the generic netlink multicast group
structure that when set prevents non-root users or root without the
'CAP_SYS_ADMIN' capability (in the user namespace owning the network
namespace) from joining the group. Set this field for the "events"
group. Use 'CAP_SYS_ADMIN' rather than 'CAP_NET_ADMIN' because of the
nature of the information that is shared over this group.
Note that the capability check in this case will always be performed
against the initial user namespace since the family is not netns aware
and only operates in the initial network namespace.
A new field is added to the structure rather than using the "flags"
field because the existing field uses uAPI flags and it is inappropriate
to add a new uAPI flag for an internal kernel check. In net-next we can
rework the "flags" field to use internal flags and fold the new field
into it. But for now, in order to reduce the amount of changes, add a
new field.

Extend drop reasons to make them usable by subsystems
other than core by reserving the high 16 bits for a
new subsystem ID, of which 0 of course is used for the
existing reasons immediately.
To still be able to have string reasons, restructure
that code a bit to make the loopup under RCU, the only
user of this (right now) is drop_monitor.

We currently have two forms of operations - small ops and "full" ops
(or just ops). The former does not have pointers for some of the less
commonly used features (namely dump start/done and policy).
The "full" ops, however, still don't contain all the necessary
information. In particular the policy is per command ID, while
do and dump often accept different attributes. It's also not
possible to define different pre_doit and post_doit callbacks
for different commands within the family.
At the same time a lot of commands do not support dumping and
therefore all the dump-related information is wasted space.
Create a new command representation which can hold info about
a do implementation or a dump implementation, but not both at
the same time.
Use this new representation on the command execution path
(genl_family_rcv_msg) as we either run a do or a dump and
don't have to create a "full" op there.

One use case would be to extend the cmd field, which is

It is annoying to add new skb drop reasons to 'enum skb_drop_reason'
and TRACE_SKB_DROP_REASON in trace/event/skb.h, and it's easy to forget
to add the new reasons we added to TRACE_SKB_DROP_REASON.
TRACE_SKB_DROP_REASON is used to convert drop reason of type number
to string. For now, the string we passed to user space is exactly the
same as the name in 'enum skb_drop_reason' with a 'SKB_DROP_REASON_'
prefix. Therefore, we can use 'auto-generation' to generate these
drop reasons to string at build time.
The new source 'dropreason_str.c' will be auto generated during build
time, which contains the string array
'const char * const drop_reasons[]'.

drop_monitor is using an unique list on which all netdevices in
the host have an element, regardless of their netns.
This scales poorly, not only at device unregister time (what I
caught during my netns dismantle stress tests), but also at packet
processing time whenever trace_napi_poll_hit() is called.
If the intent was to avoid adding one pointer in 'struct net_device'

the reason why the skb is dropped to 'kfree_skb' tracepoint.
Add the 'reason' field to 'trace_kfree_skb', therefor user can get

All drop reasons are defined in the enum 'skb_drop_reason', and
they will be print as string in 'kfree_skb' tracepoint in format

In the rare case that drop_monitor fails to register its probe on the
'napi_poll' tracepoint, it will not deactivate its hysteresis timer as
part of the error path. If the hysteresis timer was armed by the shortly
lived 'kfree_skb' probe and user space retries to initiate tracing, a
warning will be emitted for trying to initialize an active object [1].
Fix this by properly undoing all the operations that were done prior to
probe registration, in both software and hardware code paths.
Note that syzkaller managed to fail probe registration by injecting a
slab allocation failure [2].

Previously, devlink called into drop monitor in order to report hardware
originated drops / exceptions. devlink intentionally filtered control
packets and did not pass them to drop monitor as they were not dropped
by the underlying hardware.
Now drop monitor registers its probe on a generic 'devlink_trap_report'
tracepoint and should therefore perform this filtering itself instead of
having devlink do that.
Add the trap type as metadata and have drop monitor ignore control
packets.

The current codebase makes use of the zero-length array language
extension to the C90 standard, but the preferred mechanism to declare
variable-length types such as these ones is a flexible array member[1][2],
introduced in C99:
struct foo {
int stuff;
struct boo array[];
};
By making use of the mechanism above, we will get a compiler warning
in case the flexible array does not occur last in the structure, which
will help us prevent some kind of undefined behavior bugs from being
inadvertently introduced[3] to the codebase from now on.
Also, notice that, dynamic memory allocations won't be affected by
this change:
"Flexible array members have incomplete type, and so the sizeof operator
may not be applied. As a quirk of the original implementation of
zero-length arrays, sizeof evaluates to zero."[1]
This issue was found with the help of Coccinelle.

Drop monitor uses a work item that takes care of constructing and
sending netlink notifications to user space. In case drop monitor never
started to monitor, then the work item is uninitialized and not
associated with a function.
Therefore, a stop command from user space results in canceling an
uninitialized work item which leads to the following warning [1].
Fix this by not processing a stop command if drop monitor is not
currently monitoring.
