2026-10-14Bluetooth: MGMT: Allow connection rate request as peripheralLuiz Augusto von Dentz
Load Connection Subrate only issues the LE Connection Rate Request when connected as central, but either role can initiate the Connection Rate Update procedure, e.g. a HID device, which is the peripheral, does it once the HID host requests a HID SCI mode with the HID Control Point. Issue it regardless of the role. 2026-10-14Bluetooth: MGMT: Reject quality report requests during unregisterCen Zhang
A quality report request must not call a driver callback after its module text has been released. hci_mgmt_cmd() holds an hci_dev reference through set_exp_feature(), but that reference only preserves the device allocation. set_quality_report_func() takes req_lock and invokes hdev->set_quality_report without checking HCI_UNREGISTER. This is unsafe when a SET_EXP_FEATURE request for an Intel controller would change HCI_QUALITY_REPORT and is delayed before taking req_lock while the controller is removed. With btintel_pcie and btintel built as modules and no other btintel dependents, the following order is possible: Management request Removal and module unload ------------------ ------------------------- hci_mgmt_cmd(): retain hdev hci_unregister_dev(): set HCI_UNREGISTER remove hdev from lookup close under req_lock release req_lock btintel_pcie_remove(): return unload btintel_pcie, then btintel set_quality_report_func(): take req_lock call hdev->set_quality_report When the request resumes after btintel unload, the indirect call targets released module text and can cause an instruction-fetch page fault. The close operation serializes with a running callback but does not prevent a delayed management handler from invoking it afterwards. Check HCI_UNREGISTER immediately after acquiring the existing req_lock and return MGMT_STATUS_INVALID_INDEX via the common unlock path. If unregister passed its close section first, the request now rejects the removed controller before accessing the callback. If the request passes the check first, hci_dev_do_close() must wait for req_lock until the callback has returned, so unregister cannot finish before the use. 2026-10-14Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix leaking instance on Add Extended Advertising ParametersLuiz Augusto von Dentz
If queueing the command fails the instance is never removed, despite it having already been added or modified by hci_add_adv_instance, so remove it as it is done by add_ext_adv_params_complete on failure, signaling it has been removed if it was previously added. 2026-10-14Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix pending state of instances added without HCI trafficLuiz Augusto von Dentz
When Add Advertising completes without HCI communication, e.g. when the device is not powered or the instance is overridden by Global Advertising, the instance is left marked as pending, so a subsequent failure in add_adv_complete would remove it despite it having been successfully added. Fix this by clearing the pending state before completing the command. 2026-10-14Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix advertising instances with Global AdvertisingLuiz Augusto von Dentz
Global Advertising, enabled with MGMT_OP_SET_ADVERTISING, uses instance 0 and with extended advertising it has its own advertising set, but instances were still being treated as if they shared the same set: - Add Advertising and Add Extended Advertising Data would return success without ever enabling the instance. - Removing the last instance would disable all advertising sets, stopping Global Advertising while leaving its setting enabled. - Disabling Global Advertising would disable all sets, including active instances. Fix this by only overriding instances that share the advertising set of Global Advertising, and by tracking HCI_LE_ADV_0 rather than HCI_LE_ADV to determine the state of Global Advertising. 2026-10-14Bluetooth: make hdev->adv_instance_timeout a booleanPauli Virtanen
Mesh uses millisecond time units for advertisements instead of seconds as normally. These values go to hdev->adv_instance_timeout, which then has mixed units. hdev->adv_instance_timeout is however only used as a true/false flag. Make hdev->adv_instance_timeout boolean flag, to avoid possible future problems with its mixed-units values. 2026-10-14Bluetooth: mgmt: reply to cancelled mgmt commands instead of silently droppingShuai Zhang
The kernel sets HCI_AUTO_OFF when a controller is first registered and starts a 2-second timer. On slower boots bluetoothd and the HCI_AUTO_OFF timer can race: hci_power_off() is already queued while bluetoothd is still in the middle of its adapter setup sequence. hci_cmd_sync_clear() then cancels any pending mgmt commands with -ECANCELED, including the MGMT_OP_REMOVE_ADV_MONITOR sent by reset_adv_monitors() early in the setup sequence. When auto_off=1, hci_dev_close_sync() skips __mgmt_power_off() entirely, so there is no fallback path to reply to the cancelled commands. mgmt_remove_adv_monitor_complete() silently returns on -ECANCELED, leaving the command with no reply. Since bluez's mgmt queue is strictly serialised, this stalls all subsequent commands indefinitely, leaving bluetoothd unable to register the adapter. Fix by mapping -ECANCELED to MGMT_STATUS_CANCELLED in mgmt_errno_status() and replying to the cancelled command in mgmt_remove_adv_monitor_complete() instead of returning early. 2026-09-29Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix status of pending commands flushed on power offIaroslav Voitovych
cmd_complete_rsp() receives a struct cmd_lookup and, for a pending command that has no cmd_complete callback, falls through to cmd_status_rsp(cmd, data). cmd_status_rsp() reads data as a u8 *, so the status sent comes from the first byte of match->sk's representation, not from match->mgmt_status. commit f53e1c9c726d ("Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix possible crash on mgmt_index_removed") changed the callers' data from &status to &match and updated the cmd_complete branch to match->mgmt_status, but left the fall-through passing data unchanged. In mgmt_index_removed() match->sk is NULL, so every such command is answered with status 0x00 (Success) instead of MGMT_STATUS_INVALID_INDEX. In __mgmt_power_off() it is NULL too, unless a Set Powered command was pending: then settings_rsp() has stored that command's socket in match->sk, and the byte sent comes from the socket pointer. Either way the status the caller set, MGMT_STATUS_NOT_POWERED (or MGMT_STATUS_INVALID_INDEX when the device is being unregistered), is lost. Pass the status the callers set. This was seen on a QCA9377 laptop: bluetoothd's Start Discovery, pending when the adapter was powered off, was answered with Command Status 0x00 and no parameters, and bluetoothd 5.72 crashed on the zero-length success. BlueZ master has since added the length check on that path ("adapter: Fix crash on short start discovery reply", BlueZ a734b06059cb), but userspace should still be told Not Powered, not Success. Tested on Ubuntu 7.0.0-31 with a virtual controller (hci_vhci): power off is held in HCI Write Scan Enable while a Start Discovery is submitted, and the flush answers it with status 0x00 before this change and 0x0f (Not Powered) after. 2026-09-16Bluetooth: mgmt: fix race in read_unconf_index_list()Aldo Ariel Panzardo
read_unconf_index_list() counts unconfigured controllers before allocating its response, then checks the device flags again while filling it. hci_dev_list_lock stabilizes list membership, but it does not serialize the per-device flags. During asynchronous controller setup, the worker can set HCI_UNCONFIGURED and clear HCI_SETUP between the two passes. A controller omitted from the allocation count can then become eligible for the fill pass, causing an out-of-bounds write to rp->index[]. Allocate space for every device on hci_dev_list. Since list membership cannot change while hci_dev_list_lock is held, the response remains large enough regardless of flag transitions. The reported count and response length still include only eligible unconfigured controllers. 2026-09-16Bluetooth: mgmt: Dequeue pending mesh_send_sync entries on cancelLee Jones
In send_cancel(), pending mesh_tx objects are removed from the hdev->mesh_pending list and freed via mesh_send_complete(). However, if a mesh transmission was already queued onto hdev->cmd_sync_work_list via mesh_next(), the queued entry retains a raw pointer to mesh_tx. When hci_cmd_sync_work later processes the entry, it attempts to execute mesh_send_sync and its destroy callback mesh_send_start_complete using the already freed mesh_tx pointer, leading to a use-after-free. Fix this by invoking hci_cmd_sync_dequeue() for mesh_send_sync on the target mesh_tx before completing it. If the entry is found and dequeued, its destroy callback will complete and free the object; otherwise, mesh_send_complete() is called directly. Additionally, ensure the transmission queue advances after cancellation or errors. In mesh_send_start_complete(), call mesh_next() on error unless err is -ECANCELED, because hci_cmd_sync_dequeue() holds hdev->cmd_sync_work_lock and calling mesh_next() synchronously would deadlock. Instead, advance the queue in send_cancel() once the lock is released and if no transmission is in progress. 2026-08-24Bluetooth: mgmt: fix 'hdev->discovery.uuids' NULL dereferencePavel Shpakovskiy
'uuid_count' member of struct 'discovery_state' is assigned and read without any locks, so there is a chance of situation when uuid_count != 0, but uuids is NULL and there will be NULL pointer dereference. Possible race: 'hci_update_passive_scan_sync' 'hci_discovery_filter_clear' hdev->discovery.uuid_count = 0; <----------------------preempted-----------------------------> 'start_service_discovery' // Set uuid_count to value != 0 hdev->discovery.uuid_count = uuid_count; hdev->discovery.uuids = kmemdup(...); <----------------------preempted-----------------------------> spin_lock(&hdev->discovery.lock); kfree(hdev->discovery.uuids); hdev->discovery.uuids = NULL; spin_unlock(&hdev->discovery.lock); Now uuids == NULL and uuid_count != 0. So 'mgmt_device_found' -> 'is_filter_match' -> 'eir_has_uuids' receives non consistent discovery state, where NULL dereference of uuids happens. To fix it let's add discovery.lock around every read/write of uuid_count, uuids pair of struct members. It is also important to assign uuid_count value only after success kmemdup() allocation in start_service_discovery(), otherwise uuids is NULL, because kmemdup failed, but uuid_count is already assigned to non zero value. 2026-08-07Bluetooth: MGMT: reject HCI_CMD_SYNC params_len above 255Ali Ahmet Memis
mgmt_hci_cmd_sync() checks that the message length agrees with params_len but puts no upper bound on it. params_len is __le16 while the parameter length in the HCI command header is a u8: struct hci_command_hdr { __le16 opcode; __u8 plen; } __packed; hci_cmd_sync_alloc() assigns one to the other: hdr->plen = plen; if (plen) skb_put_data(skb, param, plen); so a params_len of 256 leaves plen at 0 while all 256 bytes are still appended. The frame handed to the driver then declares no parameters and carries 256 of them. On a length framed transport such as H:4 the controller takes the trailing bytes as the start of the next packet. The mgmt socket MTU is HCI_MAX_FRAME_SIZE, so params_len can reach about 1KB this way. Commit 03f1700b9b4d ("Bluetooth: MGMT: reject malformed HCI_CMD_SYNC commands") only made params_len agree with the message length, a value that fits the message but not the header field is still accepted. 2026-08-07Bluetooth: MGMT: free the HCI command when it is cancelledLinmao Li
mgmt_hci_cmd_sync() queues the pending command with a NULL destroy callback, so it is only freed if send_hci_cmd_sync() runs. A cancelled entry is leaked, as _hci_cmd_sync_cancel_entry() does not release entry->data when there is no destroy callback, and hci_cmd_sync_clear() cancels every pending entry when the controller is unregistered. Nothing else reclaims it either: mgmt_pending_new() does not put the command on hdev->mgmt_pending. The leak also pins the socket reference taken by mgmt_pending_new(), so the mgmt socket is never released. Free the command from a destroy callback. 2026-08-07Bluetooth: Add MGMT Load Connection Subrate commandLuiz Augusto von Dentz
Add MGMT_OP_LOAD_CONN_SUBRATE (0x005C) command to load per-device connection subrate parameters when the SCI feature is supported. Add MGMT_EV_CONN_SUBRATE (0x0033) event to notify userspace when connection rate changes occur via the LE Connection Rate Change HCI event. Add subrate fields (subrate_min, subrate_max, max_latency, cont_num) to struct hci_conn_params to store the loaded subrate parameters, and the corresponding le_rate_* fields to struct hci_conn to track the parameters currently in use. 2026-07-28Bluetooth: mgmt: fix pending command UAF in EIR updatesZihan Xi
MGMT_OP_SET_LOCAL_NAME is handled asynchronously on powered controllers and can run set_name_sync(). When the controller is BR/EDR capable, set_name_sync() updates the local name and then rebuilds EIR data through eir_create(). The EIR builder walks hdev->uuids, but the UUID list can be changed and entries can be freed by MGMT_OP_ADD_UUID and MGMT_OP_REMOVE_UUID. pending_eir_or_class() is meant to serialize management commands that can change EIR or the class of device, but it did not include MGMT_OP_SET_LOCAL_NAME. In addition, it walked hdev->mgmt_pending without hdev->mgmt_pending_lock even though pending commands are added and removed under that mutex. A racing command completion can therefore remove and free a pending command while pending_eir_or_class() is still inspecting it, leading to a use-after-free in the pending-command list or allowing a local name update to rebuild EIR while UUID entries are being removed. Take hdev->mgmt_pending_lock while scanning hdev->mgmt_pending and treat MGMT_OP_SET_LOCAL_NAME as an EIR/class-affecting pending command on the powered asynchronous path. Check for a conflicting pending command before copying the new short name so a rejected SET_LOCAL_NAME request does not modify hdev->short_name. 2026-07-28Bluetooth: mgmt: fix UAF in pair command cancellationZihan Xi
The pairing completion and authentication failure callbacks look up the pending MGMT_OP_PAIR_DEVICE command by walking hdev->mgmt_pending. The lookup returned a command that was still linked on the shared pending list, without keeping mgmt_pending_lock held for the later dereference and removal. A concurrent MGMT_OP_CANCEL_PAIR_DEVICE request can remove and free the same pending command before the callback uses it. The reverse race is also possible when cancel_pair_device() gets a command from pending_find() and a callback removes it before the cancel path dereferences it. This can lead to a use-after-free and a second list_del(). Make the pairing lookup helpers transfer ownership of the pending command by removing it from hdev->mgmt_pending while holding mgmt_pending_lock. The callbacks and cancel path then complete the command and free it directly, so racing paths cannot find or free the same command again. Take a temporary hci_conn reference in cancel_pair_device() because the command completion drops the reference stored in the pending command. MGMT_EV_DEVICE_DISCONNECTED carries a reason field which is defined to be one of MGMT_DEV_DISCONN_* (0x00..0x05). hci_disconn_complete_evt() converts the HCI error with hci_to_mgmt_reason(), but two other paths pass the raw HCI error straight through: hci_cs_disconnect() -> cp->reason mgmt_connect_failed() -> status The latter is reached whenever the adapter is powered off or suspended: hci_disconnect_all_sync() aborts every link with HCI_ERROR_REMOTE_POWER_OFF, hci_disconnect_sync() deliberately does not wait for HCI_EV_DISCONN_COMPLETE for that reason, so that hci_abort_conn_sync() finishes the connection off through hci_conn_failed() instead. As a result userspace sees an out of range reason: @ MGMT Event: Device Disconnected (0x000c) plen 8 BR/EDR Address: 8C:A9:6F:2C:51:46 Reason: Reserved (0x15) bluetoothd: btd_bearer_disconnected() Unknown disconnection value: 21 bluetoothd: device_disconnected() Unknown disconnection value: 21 Export hci_to_mgmt_reason() and use it in both places, so that a power off is reported as MGMT_DEV_DISCONN_REMOTE rather than as the raw HCI_ERROR_REMOTE_POWER_OFF (0x15). 2026-07-13Bluetooth: MGMT: revalidate LOAD_CONN_PARAM queued updateCen Zhang
MGMT_OP_LOAD_CONN_PARAM queues conn_update_sync() when a single parameter update changes an existing LE central connection. The queued work currently stores a borrowed hci_conn_params entry from hdev->le_conn_params. A later LOAD_CONN_PARAM request can clear disabled parameters and free that entry before hci_cmd_sync_work() runs the queued callback. Do not keep the borrowed hci_conn_params pointer in queued work. Queue the hci_conn instead and hold a reference until the queued callback completes. When the work runs, revalidate that the connection is still present, look up the current hci_conn_params entry, and cancel the update if userspace removed that entry while the work was pending. Copy the interval values from the current params entry under hdev->lock, then drop the lock and keep using hci_le_conn_update_sync() to issue the update. 2026-07-06Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix adv monitor add failure cleanupCen Zhang
hci_add_adv_monitor() publishes a new adv_monitor in hdev->adv_monitors_idr before the powered MSFT setup step. The MSFT offload add path can then fail either locally before the controller add command completes, or in the MSFT add callback. In the current queued management add flow, hci_cmd_sync_work() still invokes mgmt_add_adv_patterns_monitor_complete() with the original pending command after msft_add_monitor_pattern() returns. The buggy scenario involves two paths, with each column showing the order within that path: MSFT add handling MGMT completion 1. insert monitor and handle 1. receive sync error 2. send MSFT add command 2. call add-monitor completion 3. callback sees bad response 3. load cmd->user_data 4. callback frees monitor 4. read monitor->handle Local MSFT setup failures have the other half of the same ownership bug: they return an error after the IDR insertion, but no later code removes the failed monitor from the IDR. Keep ownership with the pending management command until its completion. For normal management adds, the MSFT add callback now records successful controller state and returns errors to its caller. The management completion frees the monitor on non-success after copying the response handle, while resume/reregister callback-error cleanup remains in the MSFT callback. The success path keeps the existing bookkeeping. 2026-07-06Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix UAF of hci_conn_params in add_device_completeSamuel Page
add_device_complete() runs from the hci_cmd_sync_work kworker, which holds only hci_req_sync_lock and *not* hci_dev_lock. It calls hci_conn_params_lookup() and then dereferences the returned object (params->flags) without taking hci_dev_lock: params = hci_conn_params_lookup(hdev, &cp->addr.bdaddr, le_addr_type(cp->addr.type)); ... device_flags_changed(NULL, hdev, &cp->addr.bdaddr, cp->addr.type, hdev->conn_flags, params ? params->flags : 0); hci_conn_params_lookup() walks hdev->le_conn_params and is documented to require hdev->lock. A concurrent MGMT_OP_REMOVE_DEVICE (remove_device()), which does run under hci_dev_lock, can call hci_conn_params_free() to list_del() and kfree() the very object the lookup returned, so the subsequent params->flags read touches freed memory [0]. Hold hci_dev_lock() across the hci_conn_params_lookup() and the read of params->flags (and the matching event emission) so the lookup result cannot be freed by a concurrent remove_device() before it is used, honouring the locking contract of hci_conn_params_lookup(). 2026-05-20Bluetooth: MGMT: validate Add Extended Advertising Data lengthMichael Bommarito
MGMT_OP_ADD_EXT_ADV_DATA is registered as a variable-length command, with MGMT_ADD_EXT_ADV_DATA_SIZE as the fixed header size. The handler then uses cp->adv_data_len and cp->scan_rsp_len to validate and copy cp->data, but it never checks that those bytes are part of the mgmt command payload. A short command can therefore make add_ext_adv_data() pass an out-of-bounds pointer into tlv_data_is_valid(). If the bytes beyond the command buffer are addressable, they can also be copied into the advertising instance as scan response data, where the caller can read them back via MGMT_OP_GET_ADV_INSTANCE. The trigger requires CAP_NET_ADMIN in the initial user namespace; KASAN reports an 8-byte slab-out-of-bounds read. 2026-04-01Bluetooth: MGMT: validate mesh send advertising payload lengthKeenan Dong
mesh_send() currently bounds MGMT_OP_MESH_SEND by total command length, but it never verifies that the bytes supplied for the flexible adv_data[] array actually match the embedded adv_data_len field. MGMT_MESH_SEND_SIZE only covers the fixed header, so a truncated command can still pass the existing 20..50 byte range check and later drive the async mesh send path past the end of the queued command buffer. Keep rejecting zero-length and oversized advertising payloads, but validate adv_data_len explicitly and require the command length to exactly match the flexible array size before queueing the request. 2026-03-12Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix list corruption and UAF in command complete handlersWang Tao
Commit 302a1f674c00 ("Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix possible UAFs") introduced mgmt_pending_valid(), which not only validates the pending command but also unlinks it from the pending list if it is valid. This change in semantics requires updates to several completion handlers to avoid list corruption and memory safety issues. This patch addresses two left-over issues from the aforementioned rework: 1. In mgmt_add_adv_patterns_monitor_complete(), mgmt_pending_remove() is replaced with mgmt_pending_free() in the success path. Since mgmt_pending_valid() already unlinks the command at the beginning of the function, calling mgmt_pending_remove() leads to a double list_del() and subsequent list corruption/kernel panic. 2. In set_mesh_complete(), the use of mgmt_pending_foreach() in the error path is removed. Since the current command is already unlinked by mgmt_pending_valid(), this foreach loop would incorrectly target other pending mesh commands, potentially freeing them while they are still being processed concurrently (leading to UAFs). 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_flex' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This is the exact same thing as the 'alloc_obj()' version, only much smaller because there are a lot fewer users of the *alloc_flex() interface. As with alloc_obj() version, this was done entirely with mindless brute force, using the same script, except using 'flex' in the pattern rather than 'objs*'. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>
2026-01-22Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix memory leak in set_ssp_completeJianpeng Chang
Fix memory leak in set_ssp_complete() where mgmt_pending_cmd structures are not freed after being removed from the pending list. Commit 302a1f674c00 ("Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix possible UAFs") replaced mgmt_pending_foreach() calls with individual command handling but missed adding mgmt_pending_free() calls in both error and success paths of set_ssp_complete(). Other completion functions like set_le_complete() were fixed correctly in the same commit. This causes a memory leak of the mgmt_pending_cmd structure and its associated parameter data for each SSP command that completes. Add the missing mgmt_pending_free(cmd) calls in both code paths to fix the memory leak. Also fix the same issue in set_advertising_complete(). 2025-10-31Bluetooth: MGMT: Fix OOB access in parse_adv_monitor_pattern()Ilia Gavrilov
In the parse_adv_monitor_pattern() function, the value of the 'length' variable is currently limited to HCI_MAX_EXT_AD_LENGTH(251). The size of the 'value' array in the mgmt_adv_pattern structure is 31. If the value of 'pattern[i].length' is set in the user space and exceeds 31, the 'patterns[i].value' array can be accessed out of bound when copied. Increasing the size of the 'value' array in the 'mgmt_adv_pattern' structure will break the userspace. Considering this, and to avoid OOB access revert the limits for 'offset' and 'length' back to the value of HCI_MAX_AD_LENGTH.
