2026-06-28batman-adv: move hardif generation counter into batadv_privNora Schiffer

2026-06-28batman-adv: remove global hardif listNora Schiffer
With interfaces being kept track of as iflink private data, there is no need for the global list anymore. batadv_hardif_get_by_netdev() can now use netdev_master_upper_dev_get()+netdev_lower_dev_get_private() to find the hardif corresponding to a netdev. 2026-05-29batman-adv: drop batman-adv specific versionSven Eckelmann
Bumping the version number on the first pull request after each merge window was deemed inappropriate for an in-tree component. The version number carries little meaningful information in the context of the Linux kernel release model, where stable and distribution might all carry slightly different patches (without any change to the batman-adv version). Instead, expose a UTS_RELEASE-based string to consumers of the netlink and ethtool interfaces. To avoid recompilation for each (re)generate of generated/utsrelease.h, init_utsname()->release is used in code which can dynamically retrieve the version string. The MODULE_VERSION is moved to a separate file because it doesn't support dynamic retrieval of the version string (but constant "at compile time" string) and it is required for the /sys/module/batman_adv/version. The latter is unfortunately still required by userspace tools. 2025-09-05batman-adv: keep skb crc32 helper local in BLASven Eckelmann
The batadv_skb_crc32() helper was shared between Bridge Loop Avoidance and Network Coding. With the removal of the network coding feature, it is possible to just move this helper directly to Bridge Loop Avoidance. 2025-09-05batman-adv: remove network coding supportSven Eckelmann
The Network Coding feature, introduced in 2013, is based on the master thesis "Inter-Flow Network Coding for Wireless Mesh Networks". It relies on the assumption that neighboring mesh nodes can reliably overhear each other's transmissions in promiscuous mode, allowing packets to be combined to reduce forwarding overhead. This assumption no longer holds for modern wireless mesh networks, which are heterogeneous and make overhearing increasingly unreliable. Factors such as multiple spatial streams, varying data rates, beamforming, and OFDMA all prevent nodes from consistently overhearing each other. The current implementation in batman-adv is not able to detect these conditions and would require a more complex layer beyond its neighbor discovery process to do so. In addition, the feature has been unmaintained for years and is discouraged for use. None of the current maintainers have the required test setup to verify its functionality, and known issues remain in its data structures (reference counting, RCU usage, and cleanup handling). Its continued presence also blocks necessary refactoring of the core originator infrastructure. Remove this obsolete and unmaintained feature. 2025-02-22batman-adv: Switch to bitmap helper for aggregation handlingSven Eckelmann
The aggregation code duplicates code which already exists in the the bitops and bitmap helper. By switching to the bitmap helpers, operating on larger aggregations becomes possible without touching the different portions of the code which read/modify direct_link_flags. 2025-02-22batman-adv: Limit number of aggregated packets directlySven Eckelmann
The currently selected size in BATADV_MAX_AGGREGATION_BYTES (512) is chosen such that the number of possible aggregated packets is lower than 32. This number must be limited so that the type of batadv_forw_packet->direct_link_flags has enough bits to represent each packet (with the size of at least 24 bytes). This requirement is better implemented in code instead of having it inside a comment. Signed-off-by: Sven Eckelmann <sven@narfation.org> Signed-off-by: Simon Wunderlich <sw@simonwunderlich.de>
2025-02-22batman-adv: Use consistent name for mesh interfaceSven Eckelmann
The way how the virtual interface is called inside the batman-adv source code is not consistent. The genl headers call it meshif and the rest of the code calls is (mostly) softif. The genl definitions cannot be touched because they are part of the UAPI. But the rest of the batman-adv code can be touched to have a consistent name again. The bulk of the renaming was done using sed -i -e 's/soft\(-\|\_\| \|\)i\([nf]\)/mesh\1i\2/g' \ -e 's/SOFT\(-\|\_\| \|\)I\([NF]\)/MESH\1I\2/g' and then it was adjusted slightly when proofreading the changes. 2025-02-22batman-adv: Add support for jumbo framesSven Eckelmann
Since batman-adv is not actually depending on hardware capabilities, it has no limit on the MTU. Only the lower hard interfaces can limit it. 2021-05-17batman-adv: bcast: queue per interface, if neededLinus Lüssing
Currently we schedule a broadcast packet like: 3x: [ [(re-)queue] --> for(hard-if): maybe-transmit ] The intention of queueing a broadcast packet multiple times is to increase robustness for wireless interfaces. However on interfaces which we only broadcast on once the queueing induces an unnecessary penalty. This patch restructures the queueing to be performed on a per interface basis: for(hard-if): - transmit - if wireless: [queue] --> transmit --> [requeue] --> transmit Next to the performance benefits on non-wireless interfaces this should also make it easier to apply alternative strategies for transmissions on wireless interfaces in the future (for instance sending via unicast transmissions on wireless interfaces, without queueing in batman-adv, if appropriate). 2021-02-06batman-adv: Drop publication years from copyright infoSven Eckelmann
The batman-adv source code was using the year of publication (to net-next) as "last" year for the copyright statement. The whole source code mentioned in the MAINTAINERS "BATMAN ADVANCED" section was handled as a single entity regarding the publishing year. This avoided having outdated (in sense of year information - not copyright holder) publishing information inside several files. But since the simple "update copyright year" commit (without other changes) in the file was not well received in the upstream kernel, the option to not have a copyright year (for initial and last publication) in the files are chosen instead. More detailed information about the years can still be retrieved from the SCM system. 2019-05-25batman-adv: Use includes instead of fwdeclsSven Eckelmann
While it can be slightly beneficial for the build performance to use forward declarations instead of includes, the handling of them together with changes in the included headers makes it unnecessary complicated and fragile. Just replace them with actual includes since some parts (hwmon, ..) of the kernel even request avoidance of forward declarations and net/ is mostly not using them in *.c file.
