Commit 447cbe95ebb9 ("vlan: fix skb_under_panic and races when toggling
HW VLAN offload") replaced vlan_passthru_header_ops with vlan_header_ops
unconditionally to avoid lockless data races when modifying
hard_header_len dynamically under RTNL.
Prior to that commit, vlan devices on top of a real device capable of
HW VLAN TX offload used vlan_passthru_header_ops, which never inserted
the 802.1Q header in the frame.
Now, with reorder_hdr=off (as done by Home Assistant OS / NetworkManager
when flags are omitted over D-Bus), vlan_dev_hard_header() always pushes
an in-band 802.1Q header, and vlan_dev_hard_start_xmit() hands the frame
to the real device as is, even if the real device supports HW VLAN TX
offload.
This is a regression for r8169 users (Realtek RTL8168h), who report
transmit queue timeouts (NETDEV WATCHDOG): this NIC stalls when asked
to offload checksum and/or TSO for frames carrying an in-band tag.
Users of r8152 based USB adapters were affected as well.
Reverting the blamed commit, disabling TX checksum offload (which
also disables TSO), or setting reorder_hdr=on were all reported to
work around the issue.
Keep vlan_dev_hard_header() as is: the in-band header keeps the frame
layout seen at the vlan device egress (taps, tc, netfilter) unchanged,
and is relied upon by stacked vlans (Q-in-Q) and by AF_PACKET SOCK_DGRAM
users sending ETH_P_8021Q frames.
Instead, when vlan_dev_hard_start_xmit() gets a frame carrying an
in-band tag with our protocol and the real device can insert tags,
move that tag to skb->vlan_tci with __skb_vlan_pop(), so that the real
device inserts it. Frames sent on the wire are unchanged, except that
frames shorter than 64 bytes with their tag now get up to 4 bytes of
extra padding, as with reorder_hdr=on and before 447cbe95ebb9.
skb_reset_mac_header() is needed first, because not all ndo_start_xmit()
callers set the mac header (e.g. AF_XDP copy mode, which uses
__dev_direct_xmit()).
vlan_set_encap_proto() may read the two bytes after the vlan header,
so frames whose linear part is shorter than VLAN_ETH_HLEN + 2 are sent
unchanged, as before. This also makes sure h_vlan_proto, read earlier
in the function, was in the linear part. Shared skbs (e.g. from
pktgen) are also sent unchanged, since popping the tag modifies the
skb, as are skbs already carrying a hwaccel tag (e.g. from generic XDP
redirect), whose tag must not be overwritten, skbs carrying XDP
metadata, which the pop would have to move, and CHECKSUM_PARTIAL skbs
whose csum_start lies within the first VLAN_ETH_HLEN bytes (only
possible with bogus offsets, e.g. from AF_XDP tx metadata), which the
pop would leave before skb->data.
If popping the header fails (memory allocation failure), the frame is
dropped and counted in tx_dropped, rather than handing the real device
a frame with an in-band tag.
tx_bytes is now sampled before the pop, so the vlan device statistics
do not change.
This also applies to frames provided by the sender with our tag
(AF_PACKET SOCK_RAW, or frames redirected from another reorder_hdr=off
vlan): the real device now inserts their tag too.

Callers that only reserve ETH_HLEN or less (such as llc_alloc_frame()),
or skbs allocated before dynamic device/headroom changes (e.g. toggling
VLAN_FLAG_REORDER_HDR or bonding/team switching slaves), can reach
vlan_dev_hard_header() with insufficient headroom and trigger
skb_under_panic().
Use skb_cow_head() in vlan_dev_hard_header() when VLAN_FLAG_REORDER_HDR
is not set to ensure sufficient headroom for the VLAN header(s) and the
underlying device hard header.
Use READ_ONCE() to read dev->hard_header_len and dev->needed_headroom as
they can be updated concurrently under RTNL (e.g. in
vlan_transfer_features()) while vlan_dev_hard_header() runs locklessly on
the transmit path. Also avoid LL_RESERVED_SPACE(dev) here so that the
extra HH_DATA_MOD alignment padding does not trigger unnecessary
pskb_expand_head() reallocations on inner stacked VLAN devices after the
outer VLAN header has been pushed.

vlan->flags, vlan->ingress_priority_map[] and vlan->nr_*_mappings
are written under RTNL, but read from lockless contexts:
- the RX path reads vlan->flags (VLAN_FLAG_REORDER_HDR) and
the ingress priority map,
- the TX path reads vlan->flags,
- /proc/net/vlan/<dev> reads vlan->flags and the ingress priority
map,
- vlan_get_size() reads vlan->nr_*_mappings,
- vlan_fill_info() will soon run without RTNL.
Add the missing READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE() annotations.
vlan_dev_change_flags() is also made a bit more readable by using
a local new_flags variable, avoiding the repeated re-reads of
vlan->flags after it has been published.

Toggling hardware VLAN TX offload (NETIF_F_HW_VLAN_CTAG_TX or
NETIF_F_HW_VLAN_STAG_TX) on a lower device invokes vlan_transfer_features(),
which dynamically changed vlandev->hard_header_len.
This causes two issues:
1. Lockless TX paths (e.g. packet_snd in af_packet.c, ip6_finish_output2)
read dev->hard_header_len without holding RTNL lock. Mutating
hard_header_len dynamically under RTNL creates a data race where upper
layers reserve insufficient headroom based on a stale hard_header_len,
resulting in skb_under_panic when vlan_dev_hard_header() is called.
2. In addition, vlan_transfer_features() updated hard_header_len without
updating header_ops, causing a mismatch between allocated headroom
and header creation.
Always setting dev->hard_header_len = real_dev->hard_header_len and
dev->needed_headroom = real_dev->needed_headroom + VLAN_HLEN unconditionally
ensures:
- dev->hard_header_len remains 100% static and immutable at real_dev->hard_header_len,
eliminating all dynamic runtime updates and data races on hard_header_len.
- Upper layers allocating skbs via LL_RESERVED_SPACE() will always reserve
sufficient headroom for software VLAN tag insertion (real_dev->hard_header_len +
real_dev->needed_headroom + VLAN_HLEN).
- vlandev inherits real_dev->needed_tailroom so underlying trailer/padding/ICV
requirements are honored.
- AF_PACKET SOCK_RAW network header offsets remain correctly aligned at
real_dev->hard_header_len.
- vlan_header_ops is used unconditionally.

vlan_device_event() generates nested UP/DOWN, MTU and feature
change events. It executes an event for the VLAN device directly
from the notifier - while the locks of the lower device are held.
This causes deadlocks, for example:
bond (3) bond_update_speed_duplex(vlan)
| ^ v
vlan (2) UP(vlan) (4) vlan_ethtool_get_link_ksettings()
| ^ v
dummy (1) UP(dummy) (5) __ethtool_get_link_ksettings()
The dummy device is ops locked, vlan creates a nested event (2),
then bond wants to ask vlan for link state (3). bond uses the
"I'm already holding the instance lock" flavor of API. But in
this case the lock held refers to vlan itself. We hit vlan's
link settings trampoline (4) and call __ethtool_get_link_ksettings()
which tries to lock dummy. Deadlock. There's no clean way for us
to tell the vlan_ethtool_get_link_ksettings() that the caller
is already in lower device's critical section.
Defer the propagation to the per-netdev work facility instead:
the notifier only schedules netdev_work_sched(vlandev, VLAN_WORK_*),
and ndo_work (vlan_dev_work) applies the change later. Hopefully
nobody expects the VLAN state changes to be instantaneous.
If someone does expect the changes to be instantaneous we will
have to do the same thing Stan did for rx_mode and "strategically"
place sync calls, to make sure such delayed works are executed
after we drop the ops lock but before we drop rtnl_lock.
Stan suggests that if we need that down the line we may
consider reshaping the mechanism into "async notifications".
AFAICT only vlan does this sort of netdev open chaining,
so as a first try I think that sticking the complexity into
the vlan code makes sense.
One corner case is that we need to cancel the event if user
explicitly changes the state before work could run. Consider
the following operations with vlan0 on top of dummy0:
ip link set dev dummy0 up # queues work to up vlan0
ip link set dev vlan0 down # user explicitly downs the vlan
ndo_work # acts on the stale event

vlan_dev_set_egress_priority() currently keeps cleared egress
priority mappings in the hash as tombstones. Repeated set/clear cycles
with distinct skb priorities therefore accumulate mapping nodes until
device teardown and leak memory.
Delete mappings when vlan_prio is cleared instead of keeping tombstones.
Now that the egress mapping lists are RCU protected, the node can be
unlinked safely and freed after a grace period.

The TX fast path and reporting paths walk egress QoS mappings without
RTNL. Convert the mapping lists to RCU-protected pointers, use RCU
reader annotations in readers, and defer freeing mapping nodes with an
embedded rcu_head.
This prepares the egress QoS mapping code for safe removal of mapping
nodes in a follow-up change while preserving the current behavior.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

When we enslave the lower device (netdevsim0) which has a vlan, we
propagate vlan's allmuti/promisc flags during ndo_open. This causes

Propagate allmulti/promisc on flags change, not on the open. There
is a slight semantics change that vlans that are down now propagate

Move the more esoteric helpers for netdev instance lock to
a dedicated header. This avoids growing netdevice.h to infinity
and makes rebuilding the kernel much faster (after touching
the header with the helpers).
The main netdev_lock() / netdev_unlock() functions are used
in static inlines in netdevice.h and will probably be used
most commonly, so keep them in netdevice.h.

In prevision to add new UAPI for hwtstamp we will be limited to the struct
ethtool_ts_info that is currently passed in fixed binary format through the
ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO ethtool ioctl. It would be good if new kernel code
already started operating on an extensible kernel variant of that
structure, similar in concept to struct kernel_hwtstamp_config vs struct
hwtstamp_config.
Since struct ethtool_ts_info is in include/uapi/linux/ethtool.h, here
we introduce the kernel-only structure in include/linux/ethtool.h.
The manual copy is then made in the function called by ETHTOOL_GET_TS_INFO.

syzbot triggered the following splat [1], sending an empty message
through pppoe_sendmsg().
When VLAN_FLAG_REORDER_HDR flag is set, vlan_dev_hard_header()
does not push extra bytes for the VLAN header, because vlan is offloaded.
Unfortunately vlan_dev_hard_start_xmit() first reads veth->h_vlan_proto
before testing (vlan->flags & VLAN_FLAG_REORDER_HDR).
We need to swap the two conditions.

Shuang Li reported an QinQ issue by simply doing:
# ip link add dummy0 type dummy
# ip link add link dummy0 name dummy0.1 type vlan id 1
# ip link add link dummy0.1 name dummy0.1.2 type vlan id 2
# rmmod 8021q
unregister_netdevice: waiting for dummy0.1 to become free. Usage count = 1
When rmmods 8021q, all vlan devs are deleted from their real_dev's vlan grp
and added into list_kill by unregister_vlan_dev(). dummy0.1 is unregistered
before dummy0.1.2, as it's using for_each_netdev() in __rtnl_kill_links().
When unregisters dummy0.1, dummy0.1.2 is not unregistered in the event of
NETDEV_UNREGISTER, as it's been deleted from dummy0.1's vlan grp. However,
due to dummy0.1.2 still holding dummy0.1, dummy0.1 will keep waiting in
netdev_wait_allrefs(), while dummy0.1.2 will never get unregistered and
release dummy0.1, as it delays dev_put until calling dev->priv_destructor,
vlan_dev_free().
This issue was introduced by Commit 563bcbae3ba2 ("net: vlan: fix a UAF in
vlan_dev_real_dev()"), and this patch is to fix it by moving dev_put() into
vlan_dev_uninit(), which is called after NETDEV_UNREGISTER event but before
netdev_wait_allrefs().

Inject error before dev_hold(real_dev) in register_vlan_dev(),
and execute the following testcase:
ip link add dev dummy1 type dummy
ip link add name dummy1.100 link dummy1 type vlan id 100
ip link del dev dummy1
When the dummy netdevice is removed, we will get a WARNING as following:

and an endless loop of:
=======================================================================
unregister_netdevice: waiting for dummy1 to become free. Usage count = -1073741824
That is because dev_put(real_dev) in vlan_dev_free() be called without
dev_hold(real_dev) in register_vlan_dev(). It makes the refcnt of real_dev
underflow.
Move the dev_hold(real_dev) to vlan_dev_init() which is the call-back of
ndo_init(). That makes dev_hold() and dev_put() for vlan's real_dev
symmetrical.
