git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm Pull non-MM updates from Andrew Morton: - "ocfs2: exit recovery thread on mount error path" (Joseph Qi): Stop OCFS2 recovery before freeing failed-mount state and replay slots, closing use-after-free and double-free races. Defer suballocator reclaim to break a transaction-lock deadlock with dismount. - "ocfs2: validate suballoc slot and bit of metadata blocks" (Joseph Qi): Validate OCFS2 metadata suballocator slots, bits and directory index block locations. Reject corrupt metadata with filesystem errors instead of BUGs or out-of-bounds accesses. - "ocfs2: deal with legacy signed name hash values" (Joseph Qi): Restore OCFS2 lookups for non-ASCII names stored with legacy signed hashes. Use stored xattr hashes during bucket splits to avoid duplicate entries and spurious ENOSPC failures. - "ocfs2: stabilize dentry names in file and setattr traces" (Cen Zhang): Snapshot OCFS2 names during file and setattr tracing to prevent rename races using freed storage or mismatched names and lengths. Preserve trace formats and the locked release open-count sample. - "panic: fix panic_force_cpu= redirect races and NMI bypass" (Bradley Morgan): Fix panic_force_cpu races and NMI redirection so crash-kernel CPU selection is honored. Preserve variable arguments on failed redirects and use a static message buffer. - "fat: allocate multiple clusters in fallocate" (Matheus Alves de Almeida): Allocate FAT clusters in batches for FALLOC_FL_KEEP_SIZE and batch FAT updates. This removes repeated single-cluster allocation overhead, particularly on synchronous mounts. - "scripts/gdb: fix radix tree lookup and stack depot diagnostic" (Ting-Han Hou): Fix GDB radix-tree lookup and its handling of XArray sibling, retry and zero entries. Also repair the stack-depot diagnostic for an out-of-range pool index. - "hung_task: Improve warning budget handling and task reporting" (Aaron Tomlin): Reset the hung-task warning budget after recovery so later hangs remain visible. Keep the configured limit intact and emit one summary per scan when detailed reports exhaust the budget. - "bootconfig: Reject unexpected data after null character and cleanups" (Masami Hiramatsu): Reject bootconfig data after an embedded null while accepting trailing padding. Validate the full input in the userspace tool, and retain internal tree sanity checks there rather than in the kernel. - "kbuild: GCOV cleanups following the prefer-atomic fix" (Konstantin Khorenko): Use the actual GCOV build flags in the prefer-atomic compiler probe. Move flag setup into scripts/Makefile.gcov and skip the probe when GCOV is disabled. - "ocfs2: xattr bucket validation fixes" (Joseph Qi): Accept valid OCFS2 xattr buckets spanning 512-byte blocks, avoiding false read-only remounts. Reject misaligned buckets and return errors instead of panicking on corrupt defrag metadata. - "ocfs2: fix metadata reservation for xattr value trees" (Joseph Qi): Reserve enough OCFS2 metadata for new and relocated xattr value trees. Fix shortfalls which could cause ENOSPC, dropped entries and leaked clusters on fragmented filesystems; remove duplicate reservations. - "Introduce arch_do_panic" (Mete Durlu): Add arch_do_panic() and move s390 and sparc handling out of generic panic code. The architecture-specific actions now follow the end-of-panic marker. - "checkpatch: userspace improvements" (Petr Vorel): Improve checkpatch's userspace detection and suppress kernel-only checks. Recognize standard inttypes macros and add explicit --userspace and --no-userspace overrides. - "ocfs2: validate dr_fs_generation of dir index root blocks" (Joseph Qi): Check OCFS2 directory index generations and leaf block numbers. Reject stale or misplaced blocks instead of using metadata left by a previously formatted filesystem. - "selftests/membarrier: Skip an unregistered memory barrier test on Musl" (Chris Gellermann): Skip the unregistered membarrier test when libc has already registered the command. Musl does this during thread creation, causing false failures in the multithreaded test. - "init: fix array boundary bugs in boot parameter parsing" (Wilson Felipe Pereira): Fix boot argument boundary cases which leave stale arguments in init's command line or panic when replacing the final environment variable. Clear the last slot and check duplicates before the limit. Summary of the 87 singletons in this merge: The OCFS2 singletons fix deadlocks between xattr updates and inline truncation, and during inode reclaim. Corrupt quota and extent metadata could also crash the kernel or corrupt memory; these paths now check the layout before using it. Other fixes close use-after-free and publication races around cluster reconfiguration, node failure, quota remount errors and shared refcount trees. New files now retain security labels from all stacked LSMs instead of silently dropping all but one. Valid xattr insertions also stop tripping FORTIFY on builds with counted arrays. Elsewhere, a lost wakeup could leave hardware-monitoring reads stuck in unkillable sleep and block further I2C traffic. That is fixed, as are kernel memory leaks in POSIX message-queue notifications and tmpfs casefold setup which could grow until memory is exhausted. A driver removal race which could crash the kernel is fixed too. The hibernation command through reboot() also stops taking the same mutex twice, avoiding a deadlock before suspension. On the boot side, bzip2 decoding now accepts valid full blocks emitted by lbzip2, fixing failures to boot those compressed kernels. Malformed bzip2 streams can no longer overflow the decode buffer, and LZ4 initrds are checked before the decoder can read past their end. FAT rejects geometry which overflows the data-area calculation on 32-bit systems, and rolls back entries when inode setup fails, preventing failed creations from reappearing after remount. The x86 XOR and RAID6 AVX paths also avoid imposing a slowdown on subsequent SSE code. * tag 'mm-nonmm-stable-2026-10-25-14-57' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm: (134 commits) scripts/gdb: fix stack depot out-of-bounds diagnostic scripts/gdb: fix radix tree lookup pointer handling ocfs2/cluster: remove zero-address nodes from IP tree on teardown ocfs2: snapshot the dentry name while tracing file release ocfs2: snapshot dentry names in file and setattr traces ocfs2/dlm: drain join handlers before releasing module text MAINTAINERS: update Markus's e-mail address mailmap: add entries for Andrew Jones stackdepot: stop preallocating after the final pool ocfs2: drain quorum work before removing the cluster watchdog: force console verbose when reporting lockups profiling: fix sampling step on 64-bit big-endian systems kernel/reboot: avoid potential deadlocks during suspension compat: avoid double rounding in times() ocfs2: pin owning modules for open debugfs files ocfs2/cluster: initialize heartbeat regions before publishing them selftests/proc: proc-pid-vm: fix unused variable warning on non-x86 ocfs2: pin refcount trees before dropping the lookup lock ocfs2: validate the xattr tree root of an indexed xattr block ocfs2/dlm: hold the lookup reference across convert AST enqueue ...

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/bpf/bpf-next Pull bpf updates from Alexei Starovoitov: "Major changes: - Introduce scalar evolution (SCEV) analysis in the verifier. It infers how registers and stack slots change in a loop and lets the verifier check bounded loops with induction variables as ranges instead of walking every iteration. The number of processed insns drops ten fold in programs with loops (Eduard Zingerman) - Add 'callx' instruction: indirect call of a static BPF subprogram. The address is taken with ld_imm64 or loaded from read-only data. Supported by x86-64, arm64 and riscv64 JITs (Alexei Starovoitov, Pu Lehui) - Add unwind_goto and unwind_exit instructions, so that Rust panic or C++ exception can run destructors of every frame it passes through. The normal path is free of unwind code. Supported by x86-64 and arm64 JITs (Alexei Starovoitov) - Support programs compiled by rust-bpf: treat load and store through a number as arena access with BPF_F_ARENA_SCALAR, accept rust names in BTF (Alexei Starovoitov) - Raise BPF program stack size from 512 bytes to 2 KiB on x86-64 and arm64 (Kumar Kartikeya Dwivedi) - Support struct, union and __int128 up to 16 bytes passed and returned by value in BPF subprograms and kfuncs, and fix x86-64 and arm64 trampolines for such arguments (Yonghong Song) - Introduce a common way to attach struct_ops to a cgroup via bpf_link. bpf_tcp_ops is the first user and mirrors TCP sock_ops callbacks (Martin KaFai Lau, Amery Hung) - Describe inlined functions in BTF. New kinds tell where the inline sites are and how to fetch the arguments there. CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_BTF_INLINE keeps it apart from the main BTF in .BTF.inline section or in btf_vmlinux_inline.ko (Alan Maguire) - Fix many memory safety, lifetime and locking bugs in BPF core, verifier, iterators, local storage, dynptr, devmap, cpumap and seg6local (Josef Bacik, Alexei Starovoitov) - Diff stat is dominated by selftests and by removal of lib/test_bpf.c. Its 16k lines of instruction tests were converted to BPF selftests that BPF CI runs on every architecture it covers (Daniel Borkmann) Other features and fixes: - Add KASAN checks to memory accesses of JITed programs on x86-64 (Alexis Lothoré) - Complete unification of helper, kfunc and subprog argument checks in the verifier (Amery Hung) - Add bpf_copy_from_user_mm[_str]() kfuncs (Anastasios Papagiannis) - Various features and fixes (Daniel Borkmann): - Add .bpf keyring for program signature verification, modelled after dm-verity keyring, and support ML-DSA in signing tools - Emit shorter and faster code in x86-64 JIT for patterns that LLVM generates - Fix various issues in gotox handling - Let BPF LSM set xattrs at inode creation with bpf_inode_init_xattr() (David Windsor, Daniel Borkmann) - Use sleepable page allocation in sleepable arena paths. Fix races between arena free, allocation and user page fault (Emil Tsalapatis) - Switch BPF crypto from lskcipher to AES-CBC and AES-ECB libraries (Eric Biggers) - Add bpf_proactive_reclaim() kfunc (Hui Zhu) - Render decl_tags in libbpf btf_dump and add tests for bpftool C dump (Ihor Solodrai) - Speed up tracing_multi attach on x86 (Jiri Olsa) - Various features and fixes (Kumar Kartikeya Dwivedi): - Add BPF_PROG_STREAM_OPEN command to read BPF streams through a file descriptor with poll support - Let kernel structs publish arena pointers with __arena type tag - Fix __uninit kfunc output buffers and fastcall rewrite with indirect stack accesses - Refuse CO-RE relocations for signed programs - Add enqueue_rcvq and dequeue_rcvq hooks to bpf_tcp_ops to adjust sk_rcvlowat and avoid unnecessary wakeups (Kuniyuki Iwashima) - Add bpf_ksock_sendto() kfunc and allow ksock connect and send from bpf_wq (Mahe Tardy) - Fix racy plt target update in arm64 bpf_arch_text_poke() (Matthew Wood) - Restructure BPF selftests Makefile as a layered build (Mykola Lysenko) - Speed up hash map lookups for u32 and u64 keys (Mykyta Yatsenko) - Add signed div/mod, movsx, bswap and gotol to MIPS JITs, signed div/mod to parisc JITs (Nicholas Dudar, Johan Almbladh) - Fix stack overflow in build ID parser on 32-bit (Nickolai Zeldovich) - Add stack arguments, signed arena loads and gotox to riscv64 JIT. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/ebiggers/linux Pull crypto library updates from Eric Biggers: - Migrate the x86 and riscv optimized implementations of various AES modes (ECB, CBC, CBC-CTS, CTR, XCTR, XTS) into lib/crypto/. This makes the library APIs be properly accelerated on these architectures, while still accelerating crypto_skcipher as well. It removes a lot of redundant glue code, since the crypto API boilerplate no longer needs to be duplicated for these architectures. 2026-10-15selftests/bpf: Remove the old test_bpf moduleDaniel Borkmann
The instruction tests of the test_bpf module live in the BPF selftests now, as the jit_insns test of test_progs, which BPF CI runs on every architecture it covers, and its skb_segment tests have a KUnit successor in net/core/net_test.c. Remove the module together with its Kconfig entry, the test_kmod.sh and test_bpf.sh wrappers of the bpf and net selftests, the config fragments and defconfigs that enabled it, as well as all other references to it and symbol exports in core kernel. For archs wanting to support BPF JITs, it's time they move over to the BPF selftests for proper coverage. 2026-10-13resource, kunit: stop selecting GET_FREE_REGIONKarl Mehltretter
RESOURCE_KUNIT_TEST selects GET_FREE_REGION even when no other option needs it. Remove the selection to follow the dependency rule in Documentation/dev-tools/kunit/style.rst. Skip resource_test_region_intersects() when GET_FREE_REGION is disabled. GET_FREE_REGION has no prompt, so configurations without a production consumer cannot enable it. Most configurations will therefore skip this case; this is intentional. The union and intersection tests remain available. Since kunit_skip() does not return, the compiler drops the reference to the unavailable alloc_free_mem_region(), as in the CONFIG_OF_ADDRESS check in drivers/of/of_test.c. 2026-10-11kbuild, btf: Expose vmlinux inline BTF through sysfsAlan Maguire
Expose BTF inline-location information from vmlinux .BTF.inline sections in /sys/kernel/btf as vmlinux.inline. Embedded vmlinux inline BTF supports read-only mmap(). Provide runtime support for a module-delivered vmlinux inline BTF carrier. Its link record binds the carrier module name, BTF size, and SHA-256 digest to the running kernel before its data is made available through a lazy vmlinux.inline sysfs attribute. The carrier is handled before ordinary module BTF registration, so its incidental .BTF data is not exposed. Make CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_BTF_INLINE tristate. When configured as a module, retain vmlinux final split inline BTF for btf_vmlinux_inline.ko instead of embedding it in vmlinux. Reserve .BTF.inline.link in vmlinux and extend the final resolve_btfids patch pass to bind btf_vmlinux_inline to the raw vmlinux.BTF.inline payload. This preserves the normal built-in configuration while allowing the large inline BTF payload to load on demand. Normal module inline BTF is handled separately, after its references have been relocated against the final module BTF. 2026-10-06lib/tests: add KUnit tests for errseqThomas Maarseveen
The errseq_t infrastructure (lib/errseq.c) underpins writeback error reporting but has no regression tests. Its semantics are subtle enough to have needed fixing before: commit b4678df184b3 ("errseq: Always report a writeback error once") changed how unseen errors reach new samplers. Add a KUnit suite covering the documented single-threaded semantics: - a zeroed errseq_t is the "no error yet" epoch - errors are recorded, overwrite one another, and both ends of the valid errno range round-trip exactly - an error nobody has seen samples as zero, so a check against a fresh sample still reports it - errseq_check_and_advance() reports a given error exactly once per cursor and leaves the cursor in place when nothing has changed - once an error has been seen, a fresh sample is current and a check against it reports nothing - the same error recorded again after being seen is reported again, even to a cursor that consumed the first occurrence while another cursor marked the repeat as seen - independent cursors each observe each error The lockless behaviour of errseq_t under concurrent updates and the WARN path for invalid error values are deliberately out of scope. Tested with ./tools/testing/kunit/kunit.py run, with a kunitconfig enabling CONFIG_KUNIT=y and CONFIG_ERRSEQ_KUNIT_TEST=y; all 13 tests pass under ARCH=um. 2026-10-03lib: Move SipHash into lib/crypto/Eric Biggers
The addition of SipHash to lib/ predated the existence of the lib/crypto/ directory. Since SipHash is a cryptographic algorithm, move it from the top-level lib/ directory to lib/crypto/. (This does mean HalfSipHash comes with it too, as it's in the same files. But lib/crypto/ still seems like the proper place for both.) Specifically: - Move both siphash.c and siphash_kunit.c. Keep the header <linux/siphash.h> as-is for now. - Drop the dedicated MAINTAINERS entry for SipHash, as per the suggestion from Jason (https://lore.kernel.org/r/asB7QVFMlgKgbje2@zx2c4.com/). The C files now just fold up to the "CRYPTO LIBRARY" entry. Add the header explicitly, as it otherwise would be left unmaintained. - Move the kconfig option that controls the KUnit test. Put "CRYPTO_LIB" in its name and update the prompt and help text to make it consistent with the other crypto library test options. - Enable the KUnit test in lib/crypto/.kunitconfig. - Link to siphash.rst from the appropriate place in libcrypto-hash.rst. - Use obj-y instead of lib-y, for consistency with the fact that currently lib/crypto/ doesn't use kbuild's support for library file goals. We could keep it as lib-y, but virtually every kernel needs SipHash support anyway (with vsprintf, printk, IPv4, IPv6, etc. depending on it) so there is no practical difference in this case. 2026-09-24um: Consolidate MAGIC_SYSRQ into generic Kconfig definitionSasha Levin
kconfiglint reports: K008: config MAGIC_SYSRQ has prompts in 2 separate definitions MAGIC_SYSRQ is defined in two places with complementary conditions: arch/um/Kconfig:213 — depends on MCONSOLE (UML only) lib/Kconfig.debug:665 — depends on !UML (everything except UML) The UML definition has existed since the initial git import in commit 1da177e4c3f4 ("Linux-2.6.12-rc2"). UML needs MAGIC_SYSRQ to work through its mconsole interface rather than through keyboard input, so the UML version depends on MCONSOLE while the generic version excludes UML entirely with `depends on !UML`. These two definitions are logically complementary: on UML, MAGIC_SYSRQ requires MCONSOLE; on everything else, it has no special dependencies. This can be expressed as a single definition with `depends on !UML || MCONSOLE`, which evaluates to: - On UML: requires MCONSOLE (same as before) - On non-UML: always satisfiable (same as before) Consolidate into the generic definition in lib/Kconfig.debug by changing the dependency to `depends on !UML || MCONSOLE` and merging the UML- specific help text that explains the mconsole-based sysrq interface. Remove the now-redundant definition from arch/um/Kconfig. This follows the same unification pattern used by commit 7bd291abe2da ("sched: Unify the SCHED_{SMT,CLUSTER,MC} Kconfig") and our earlier SCHED_MC consolidation for SH. No functional change — the resulting Kconfig behavior is identical. Depend on 842_DECOMPRESS as required by Documentation/dev-tools/kunit/style.rst. This also prevents the test from promoting a modular decompressor to built-in. Fixes: cca072cb1423 ("lib/842: add KUnit tests for the decompressor") Reported-by: Geert Uytterhoeven <geert@linux-m68k.org> Closes: https://lore.kernel.org/r/CAMuHMdVcZ5cV4-HrjLYfFKh6UshiVxq5eXCNyp0Z1k_SMAvF5g@mail.gmail.com/ Assisted-by: LLM Signed-off-by: Karl Mehltretter <kmehltretter@gmail.com> Acked-by: David Gow <david@davidgow.net> Signed-off-by: Herbert Xu <herbert@gondor.apana.org.au>
2026-09-11lib/842: add KUnit tests for the decompressorKarl Mehltretter
Add table-driven tests for the 842 decompressor's output and history validation. Three malformed streams cover an indexed copy larger than the remaining output, short data larger than the remaining output, and a repeat after fewer than eight output bytes. Every case checks the return value, output length and fixed guard bands on both sides of the output. Successful cases also check complete contents from a poison-filled destination. The repeat vector's CRC includes the leading guard byte, so the unfixed decoder successfully validates the CRC after reading before the buffer. Three valid streams cover the same boundaries at equality: an I8 index consuming the final eight bytes, five short-data bytes consuming the final five, and a repeat with exactly one block of history. On an unmodified baseline the malformed cases fail and the boundary cases pass; with the preceding fixes all six pass. 2026-09-03lib/test_csd_lock: Add a module to stall a CPU on a CSD lockBreno Leitao
Add test_csd_lock, a module that keeps one CPU from answering an IPI for as long as its stall_ms parameter says, so that the CSD-lock debug code has a stall to report. With in_handler=1 the CPU stalls inside a CSD handler instead, which is the case where the IPI is not re-sent. The module needs CONFIG_CSD_LOCK_WAIT_DEBUG and csdlock_debug=1. Loading it runs one stall and then fails the load with -EAGAIN, the way test_lockup does, so that nothing is left loaded afterwards. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm Pull more MM updates from Andrew Morton: - "mm/rmap: index MAP_PRIVATE file-backed folios by anonymous pgoff" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Index MAP_PRIVATE file-backed folios by their anonymous page offset to resolve confusion around reverse mapping for zeroed and CoW'd file-backed memory. Use this new VMA anonymous page offset tracking to eliminate index conflicts and lay the foundation for scalable CoW performance improvements. - "promote mapped executable folios after first usage for MGLRU" (Baolin Wang) Make MGLRU's protection of mapped executable file folios more reliable. Follow the classical LRU's logic, promoting mapped executable file folios after their first usage to give executable code a better chance to stay in memory and improve workload performance. - "mm: vmscan: fix node reclaim ignoring swappiness parameter" (Ridong Chen) Fix per-node proactive reclaim interface's ignoring the swappiness parameter when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled by consolidating sc_swappiness() into a single function that checks proactive_swappiness regardless of kernel configuration. - "mm/vmscan: reduce lru_lock contention via vmstat-derived scan-balance cost" (Usama Arif) Reduce lru_lock contention in the reclaim path by deriving scan-balance costs from vmstat counters rather than lock-acquired producer updates. Read and decay these cost signals on the reclaim side under a dedicated per-lruvec lock, reducing total LRU lock wait time by over 60% without impacting scan throughput. - "zram: fix zram issues reported by sashiko" (Sergey Senozhatsky) Fix two low-risk zram bugs which Sashiko spotted in drive-by review. - "Honor XA_FLAGS_ACCOUNT in xas_split_alloc() and charge to folio's memcg" (Zi Yan) Fix xas_split_alloc() by enabling target folio memcg charging during splits and adding the missing __GFP_ACCOUNT flag for proper XArray node memory accounting. - "selftests/mm: use pattern matching in .gitignore" (Pratyush Mallick) Replace hardcoded binary names in selftests/mm/.gitignore with a generic pattern-matching rule to automatically ignore generated test files and avoid manual updates when adding new tests. - "mm/page_ext: remove pgdat_page_ext_init()" (Sang-Heon Jeon) Make the incompatibility between FLATMEM and NUMA explicit in mm/Kconfig and remove the unused pgdat_page_ext_init() function. - "zram: fix zstd error paths and add parameter validation" (Haoqin Huang) Clean up zram compression backends by removing redundant error cleanup, adding parameter and dictionary validation, auto-prefixing algorithm error logs, and resetting parameters prior to reinitialization. - "zram: fix stale scan bounds after reinitialization" (Longlong Xia) Prevent out-of-bounds slot accesses during concurrent zram resets by moving table scan bound calculations under dev_lock in writeback_store() and read_block_state(). - "add anon mTHP collapse test cases" (Baolin Wang) Extend selftests helper functions to support arbitrary page orders and add new test cases and options for mTHP collapse in khugepaged. - "selftests/mm: Handle unsupported and transient test conditions" (Muhammad Usama Anjum) Update MM selftests to report a SKIP status instead of a failure when required kernel or filesystem features are unsupported, while adding retry logic for transient page migration errors. - "mm/zswap: Fixes and improves the zswap shrink" (Hao Jia) Fix the missing zswap global shrinker when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled and extend shrink_memcg() to support batch writeback for improved writeback efficiency. - "alloc_tag: introduce IOCTL-based filtering for MAP" (Suren Baghdasaryan) Introduce an IOCTL-based binary interface for memory allocation profiling that enables kernel-side filtering before per-CPU counter aggregation. This eliminates the text-parsing overhead of /proc/allocinfo and provides up to a 20x speedup by transferring only filtered allocation data to userspace. - "better block swap batching and a different take on swap_ops v5" (Christoph Hellwig) Refactor block swap I/O to use swap_iocb for batching instead of single-bio requests and rebase the swap_ops interface, achieving faster swap throughput during kernel builds. - "mm: kmemleak: reduce transient false positives by confirming leaks" (Catalin Marinas) Reduce false-positive kmemleak reports by combining two kmemleak enhancements that add a second confirmation scan and a configurable minimum unreferenced scan count module parameter. - "mm: kmemleak: default min_unref_scans to 2 for verbose kernels" (Breno Leitao) Auto-scanning kernels can generate false-positive memory leak reports on single scans, so this patch defaults min_unref_scans to 2 when CONFIG_DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_VERBOSE is enabled to require a second confirming scan. - "swap_ops updates" (Christoph Hellwig) Batching I/O for synchronous swap devices causes performance regressions and filesystem-based swap suffers from double-indirection overhead. This series resolves both issues by reintroducing per-folio writes for synchronous swap and allowing filesystems to directly export their own swap_ops. - "mm/khugepaged: several cleanups" (Nico Pache) khugepaged accumulated redundant state-checking patterns and outdated comments following mTHP integration. Introduce dedicated helpers for PTE validation and event counting while refreshing the internal documentation. - "maple_tree: lock checking and clean ups" (Liam Howlett) Syzbot reports incorrectly blame memory management exit paths for locking bugs, maple tree erase operations risk allocation failures without gfp flags and internal documentation lacks clarity. Improve lock error detection, update docs, fix race and allocation edge cases and optimize erase allocations using a fallback to GFP_KERNEL | GFP_NOFAIL. * tag 'mm-stable-2026-08-26-15-22' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm: (172 commits) selftests/proc: make proc-maps-race work with READ_IMPLIES_EXEC memcg: move LRU size accounting on reparenting instead of copying it mm/vmscan: fix comment logic in balance_pgdat maple_tree: add helper mas_make_walkable() maple_tree: avoid extra gap calculation maple_tree: fix argument name in header maple_tree: change two GFP flags in tests maple_tree: document erase and allocations better maple_tree: avoid mas_erase() and mtree_erase() failures maple_tree: document that erase may use GFP_KERNEL for allocations maple_tree: catch race in mas_alloc_cyclic() maple_tree: add bulk parent set helper maple_tree: micro optimisation of mas_wr_store_type() maple_tree: optimise mas_wr_node_store() when not in rcu mode maple_tree: use prefetched value in mas_wr_store_type() maple_tree: clarify comments on mas_nomem() maple_tree: drop MAPLE_ALLOC_SLOTS maple_tree: drop dead code from mas_extend_spanning_null() maple_tree: documentation fix maple_tree: add write lock checking with lockdep sequence numbers ...
2026-08-24percpu: drop CONFIG_DEBUG_FORCE_WEAK_PER_CPUTejun Heo
alpha requires percpu variables in modules to be defined as weak so that the compiler generates GOT based external references for them. This puts two extra restrictions on percpu variable definitions. The symbol must be globally unique even when static and a static percpu variable can't be defined inside a function. DEBUG_FORCE_WEAK_PER_CPU exists to give generic code build coverage for these restrictions without building for alpha. MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING defines a static percpu counter at each allocation call site and thus can't be built with weak percpu definitions, so it depends on !DEBUG_FORCE_WEAK_PER_CPU. As allmodconfig enables DEBUG_FORCE_WEAK_PER_CPU, this knocks MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING out of allmodconfig build coverage. allmodconfig coverage for MEM_ALLOC_PROFILING is worth more than build coverage for restrictions which only matter to alpha module builds. Drop DEBUG_FORCE_WEAK_PER_CPU. Restriction violations will now show up only on alpha builds. "Keep tail page private zero at free and folio split" (Zi Yan) Add checks to ensure tail_page->private is zero when freeing compound or high-order pages and when promoting tail pages during large folio splits. By validating these fields at free and split time, it allows the removal of redundant private field clearing inside prep_compound_tail() - "mm: drop redundant lru_add_drain in anon folio reuse paths" (Barry Song) Eliminate redundant lru_add_drain() calls in wp_can_reuse_anon_folio() and do_swap_page() to reduce LRU lock contention and system overhead By validating folio refcounts against the LRU cache before draining and removing unnecessary drains in the swap path, it achieves up to a 30.5% reduction in drain calls during heavy swap workloads - "mm: clean up folio LRU and swap declarations" (Jianyue Wu) Reorganize folio LRU and swap code by relocating page-cluster state to mm/swap_state.c, renaming mm/swap.c to mm/folio.c, and moving MM-internal reclaim declarations into mm/internal.h. - "userfaultfd: working set tracking for VM guest memory" (Kiryl Shutsemau) Add userfaultfd support for tracking the working set of VM guest memory, so a VMM can identify hot pages and reclaim cold ones to tiered or remote storage - "mm: remove CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE (Part 2)" (David Hildenbrand) Remove the remaining pieces of CONFIG_HAVE_BOOTMEM_INFO_NODE, performing some smaller cleanups around freeing of reserved vmemmap pages on the way. - "mm/damon: update probe hits for runtime parameter commits" (SJ Park) Ensure that DAMON's probe_hits attribute counter is properly updated when monitoring intervals are changed at runtime, matching the behavior of nr_accesses. To achieve this, it refactors and renames existing helper functions for shared use, applies the updates to probe_hits, and handles edge cases in damon_probe_hits_mvsum() to maintain measurement accuracy. - "KSM: performance optimizations for rmap_walk_ksm" (xu xin) Resolve a severe KSM reverse-mapping performance bottleneck where thousands of split VMAs sharing a single anon_vma cause extended lock contention. By adding an interval-filtering check during the rmap walk, it reduces worst-case anon_vma lock hold times from over 500ms down to under 2ms, preventing application freezes and latency spikes under memory pressure. - "mm: split a couple of headers from internal.h" (Mike Rapoport) Split declarations related to mm_init, memblock, vmalloc and sparse into new headers - "KSM: use linear_page_index in collect_procs_ksm()" (xu xin) Apply the interval tree optimization from rmap_walk_ksm() to collect_procs_ksm() to avoid iterating over non-matching VMAs during KSM memory error handling. It hoists loop-invariant address initialization and restricts the anon_vma_interval_tree_foreach walk to a targeted page offset range, reducing redundant checks and improving lookup efficiency. - "selftests/mm: avoid false failures in hugetlb and KSM tests" (Sayali Patil) Fix issues in the hugetlb and KSM MM selftest categories that can report failures when the prerequisites for the tests are not satisfied - "mm/damon: introduce data attributes only monitoring" (SJ Park) Introduce attribute-weighted region management in DAMON, allowing users to prioritize specific data attributes (such as page sizes or cgroups) over or instead of access monitoring. By accepting a locked pointer and signaling retry status when lock release occurs, it enables page fault resolution in userfaultfd regions while preserving backward compatibility for existing callers. - "mm: make VMA page offset handling more consistent" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Clean up and standardize how vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and manipulated across file-backed and anonymous mappings in the kernel It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(), vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while renaming rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their functionality. These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that will unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd folios. - "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks" (Usama Arif) Address kernel panics and state corruption caused by MM walk callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries created during HMM migrations It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock() properly recognize device-private PMDs instead of assuming a present THP or a standard migration entry. - "mm/rmap: Refactor try_to_unmap_one" (Dev Jain) Refactor try_to_unmap_one by modularizing Hugetlb, anonymous-lazyfree, and anonymous-swapbacked logic into dedicated functions, laying the structural groundwork for batched anonymous large folio unmapping. - "Docs/ABI/damon: sysfs ABI document fixes and additions" (Song Hu) Fix typos and fills in missing entries in the DAMON sysfs ABI document - "dax/kmem: atomic whole-device hotplug via sysfs" (Gregory Price) Introduce an atomic sysfs state attribute and supporting DAX/MM infrastructure to prevent userland races when offlining and removing entire memory regions By adding an unplugged state alongside standard online modes, it enables whole-device atomic hotplug control while preserving backward compatibility. - "mm: convert more vm_flags_t users to vma_flags_t" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Continue transitioning the kernel from the deprecated vm_flags_t type to vma_flags_t across core memory management infrastructure. It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(), unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like mlock, mprotect, and mremap. - "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" (xu xin) Refactor mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify duplicate slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds code documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions. - "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields" (SJ Park) Clean up DAMON core structures by consistently marking internal-only fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper direct access from outer layers. It enforces encapsulation across core structures including damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct members. - "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL de-ref and races" (SJ Park) Address potential infinite loops, NULL dereferences, and race conditions identified in DAMON It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races. - "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on RT/UP" (Brendan Jackman) Fix an NMI safety flaw in __free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks via non-PCP or isolated migration paths. It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory hotplug or large allocation frees. - "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent cleanups" (Brendan Jackman) Clean up and update page allocator nomenclature, documentation, and debug assertions. It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete VM_BUG_ON() assertions in allocation paths. - "mm/mseal: further cleanups" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Refactor and simplify the mseal implementation by clarifying API boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity. It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO, eliminates mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only to current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no functional changes intended. - "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up per-node proactive reclaim" (Ridong Chen) Resolve reclaim behavior bugs and clean up function parameters across memory reclaim paths It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead of collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim(). - "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" (Kefeng Wang) Clean up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it removes the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP pages as non-resident. - "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants" (Kiryl Shutsemau) Two trivial cleanups in the folio split API - "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit exec expectation bugs" (SJ Park) Resolve minor operational and testing bugs in DAMON identified by Sashiko. 2026-08-05kcov: fix data corruption and race conditions on PREEMPT_RTTetsuo Handa
syzbot is reporting KCOV state corruption on PREEMPT_RT kernels, for the temporary storage used for saving/restoring remote KCOV state is currently allocated as the per-CPU area. On PREEMPT_RT kernels, softirq handlers run as preemptible task threads (e.g., ksoftirqd). If a softirq context preempts a task running a remote KCOV session, it safely saves the task's state into the per-CPU area. However, if that softirq thread is subsequently preempted by a higher- priority softirq thread on the same CPU, the second softirq will overwrite the same per-CPU area, permanently destroying the original task's KCOV state. Fix this data corruption by moving the temporary storage from the per-CPU area to the per-thread area. Since each softirq thread now owns its own task context, nested softirq preemption no longer causes data overwrites. Note that while the temporary storage is now on a per-thread basis, the per-CPU kcov_percpu_data.lock must be retained, for we need to ensure that kcov_remote_start() and kcov_remote_stop() operate atomically without racing against asynchronous interrupts that manipulate the current task's KCOV state. It is likely that GFP_KERNEL allocation by vmalloc_node() in kcov_init() has already called panic() before returning NULL, for there will be no OOM-killable userspace processes when __init function of built-in module runs. But this patch also fixes crashing the kernel when vmalloc_node() in kcov_init() returned NULL, for kcov_init() left per-CPU irq_area == NULL but kcov_remote_start() depends on per-CPU irq_area != NULL, resulting in (1) doing vmalloc() in kcov_remote_start() despite !in_task() context (2) out-of-array-bounds access if (1) succeeded but kcov->remote_size < CONFIG_KCOV_IRQ_AREA_SIZE (3) always leak memory allocated by (1), eventually killing all OOM-killable userspace processes problems. 2026-07-28lib: test bitmap vs IDA vs Maple Tree performance for region allocationsYury Norov
Compare the cost of allocating and freeing variable-sized regions using a bitmap, IDA and a Maple Tree. All implementations process the same randomly generated sequence of regions containing up to 32 entries, until the configured capacity is exhausted. The benchmark exercises monotonic allocation into an initially empty pool, followed by reverse-order freeing. It does not model fragmentation or interleaved allocation and freeing, nor does it isolate locking or RCU overhead. Allocation time includes the terminal failed request that detects exhaustion. Run the benchmark at several capacities to show how the approaches scale. Report allocation and free times separately because bitmap, IDA and Maple Tree removal have substantially different costs. On x86/kvm, the output example is: Start testing bitmap vs IDA vs Maple Tree region allocation memory: bitmap is exact; IDA and Maple Tree are lower bounds Type alloc (ns) free (ns) regions capacity memory (B) Bitmap 93457345 176151 60644 1000000 125000 Maple 11758660 12870146 60644 1000000 1552656 IDA 31066416 20870824 60644 1000000 134864 Bitmap 919119 17679 6032 100000 12504 Maple 1158193 1187140 6032 100000 154640 IDA 2759670 2116004 6032 100000 14288 Bitmap 17120 2043 613 10000 1256 Maple 116350 117537 613 10000 15888 IDA 243396 202654 613 10000 1872 Bitmap 1220 262 55 1000 128 Maple 12076 10106 55 1000 1552 IDA 25730 20875 55 1000 144 Bitmap 593 124 18 100 16 Maple 3599 4782 18 100 528 IDA 3266 1960 18 100 144 Bitmap 414 129 10 10 8 Maple 2143 1385 10 10 272 IDA 892 648 10 10 16 Region allocation benchmark complete Reported IDA and Maple Tree memory figures exclude slab overhead and transient allocations. The Maple Tree figure is additionally a lower-bound estimate that assumes fully occupied leaf nodes and excludes internal nodes. IDA has no region-allocation API, so each region is implemented as a sequence of single-ID allocations. The IDs remain contiguous because this benchmark fills an initially empty IDA monotonically. The benchmark is motivated by the discussion linked below about choosing the best data structure for the channel ID pool with the capacity of 2048 IDs for the nova GPU driver. Specifically for 2048 IDs the result is: Bitmap 5112 615 121 2048 256 Maple 78526 59592 121 2048 3344 IDA 165274 117761 121 2048 848 The benchmark accepts a list of up to 64 nonzero capacities to test. For example: insmod region_alloc_benchmark.ko capacities=1024,2048,4096,65536 The list may contain duplicate capacities. Each occurrence generates a new region-size sequence, which is useful for collecting statistical characteristics of the benchmark results. 2026-05-28compiler-context-analysis: Bump required Clang version to 23Marco Elver
Clang 23 introduces several major improvements: 1. Support for multiple arguments in the `guarded_by` and `pt_guarded_by` attributes [1]. This allows defining variables protected by multiple context locks, where read access requires holding at least one lock (shared or exclusive), and write access requires holding all of them exclusively. 2. Function pointer support [2]. We can now add attributes to function pointers just like we do on normal functions. 3. A fix to use arrays of locks [3]. Each index is now correctly treated as a separate lock instance. 4. A fix for implicit member access in attributes [4]. This allows to use __guarded_by(&foo->lock) correctly. Overall that makes it worthwhile bumping the compiler version instead of trying to make both Clang 22 and later work while supporting these new features. 2026-05-11workqueue: forbid TEST_WORKQUEUE from being built-inBreno Leitao
The benchmark drives the workqueue's affinity_scope through sysfs by filp_open()'ing /sys/bus/workqueue/devices/bench_wq/affinity_scope. 2026-05-04objtool: Grow __cfi_* prefix symbols for all CFI+CALL_PADDINGJosh Poimboeuf
For all CONFIG_CFI+CONFIG_CALL_PADDING configs, for C functions, the __cfi_ symbols only cover the 5-byte kCFI type hash. After that there also N bytes of NOP padding between the hash and the function entry which aren't associated with any symbol. The NOPs can be replaced with actual code at runtime. Without a symbol, unwinders and tooling have no way of knowing where those bytes belong. Grow the existing __cfi_* symbols to fill that gap. Note that assembly functions with SYM_TYPED_FUNC_START() aren't affected by this issue, their __cfi_ symbols also cover the padding. Also, CONFIG_PREFIX_SYMBOLS has no reason to exist: CONFIG_CALL_PADDING is what causes the compiler to emit NOP padding before function entry (via -fpatchable-function-entry), so it's the right condition for creating prefix symbols. Remove CONFIG_PREFIX_SYMBOLS, as it's no longer needed. Simplify the LONGEST_SYM_KUNIT_TEST dependency accordingly. Rework objtool's arguments a bit to handle the variety of prefix/cfi-related cases. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/riscv/linux Pull RISC-V updates from Paul Walmsley: "There is one significant change outside arch/riscv in this pull request: the addition of a set of KUnit tests for strlen(), strnlen(), and strrchr(). Otherwise, the most notable changes are to add some RISC-V-specific string function implementations, to remove XIP kernel support, to add hardware error exception handling, and to optimize our runtime unaligned access speed testing. A few comments on the motivation for removing XIP support. It's been broken in the RISC-V kernel for months. The code is not easy to maintain. Furthermore, for XIP support to truly be useful for RISC-V, we think that compile-time feature switches would need to be added for many of the RISC-V ISA features and microarchitectural properties that are currently implemented with runtime patching. No one has stepped forward to take responsibility for that work, so many of us think it's best to remove it until clear use cases and champions emerge. Summary: - Add Kunit correctness testing and microbenchmarks for strlen(), strnlen(), and strrchr() - Add RISC-V-specific strnlen(), strchr(), strrchr() implementations - Add hardware error exception handling - Clean up and optimize our unaligned access probe code - Enable HAVE_IOREMAP_PROT to be able to use generic_access_phys() - Remove XIP kernel support - Warn when addresses outside the vmemmap range are passed to vmemmap_populate() - Update the ACPI FADT revision check to warn if it's not at least ACPI v6.6, which is when key RISC-V-specific tables were added to the specification - Increase COMMAND_LINE_SIZE to 2048 to match ARM64, x86, PowerPC, etc. - Make kaslr_offset() a static inline function, since there's no need for it to show up in the symbol table - Add KASLR offset and SATP to the VMCOREINFO ELF notes to improve kdump support - Add Makefile cleanup rule for vdso_cfi copied source files, and add a .gitignore for the build artifacts in that directory - Remove some redundant ifdefs that check Kconfig macros - Add missing SPDX license tag to the CFI selftest - Simplify UTS_MACHINE assignment in the RISC-V Makefile - Clarify some unclear comments and remove some superfluous comments - Fix various English typos across the RISC-V codebase" * tag 'riscv-for-linus-7.1-mw1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/riscv/linux: (31 commits) riscv: Remove support for XIP kernel riscv: Reuse compare_unaligned_access() in check_vector_unaligned_access() riscv: Split out compare_unaligned_access() riscv: Reuse measure_cycles() in check_vector_unaligned_access() riscv: Split out measure_cycles() for reuse riscv: Clean up & optimize unaligned scalar access probe riscv: lib: add strrchr() implementation riscv: lib: add strchr() implementation riscv: lib: add strnlen() implementation lib/string_kunit: extend benchmarks to strnlen() and chr searches lib/string_kunit: add performance benchmark for strlen() lib/string_kunit: add correctness test for strrchr() lib/string_kunit: add correctness test for strnlen() lib/string_kunit: add correctness test for strlen() riscv: vdso_cfi: Add .gitignore for build artifacts riscv: vdso_cfi: Add clean rule for copied sources riscv: enable HAVE_IOREMAP_PROT riscv: mm: WARN_ON() for bad addresses in vmemmap_populate() riscv: acpi: update FADT revision check to 6.6 riscv: add hardware error trap handler support ...

2026-04-04lib/string_kunit: add performance benchmark for strlen()Feng Jiang
Introduce a benchmarking framework to the string_kunit test suite to measure the execution efficiency of string functions. The implementation is inspired by crc_benchmark(), measuring throughput (MB/s) and latency (ns/call) across a range of string lengths. It includes a warm-up phase, disables preemption during measurement, and uses a fixed seed for reproducible results. This framework allows for comparing different implementations (e.g., generic C vs. architecture-optimized assembly) within the KUnit environment. Initially, provide a benchmark for strlen(). 2026-04-01workqueue: add test_workqueue benchmark moduleBreno Leitao
Add a kernel module that benchmarks queue_work() throughput on an unbound workqueue to measure pool->lock contention under different affinity scope configurations (cache vs cache_shard). The module spawns N kthreads (default: num_online_cpus()), each bound to a different CPU. All threads start simultaneously and queue work items, measuring the latency of each queue_work() call. Results are reported as p50/p90/p95 latencies for each affinity scope. The affinity scope is switched between runs via the workqueue's sysfs affinity_scope attribute (WQ_SYSFS), avoiding the need for any new exported symbols. The module runs as __init-only, returning -EAGAIN to auto-unload, and can be re-run via insmod. Example of the output: running 50 threads, 50000 items/thread cpu 6806017 items/sec p50=2574 p90=5068 p95=5818 ns smt 6821040 items/sec p50=2624 p90=5168 p95=5949 ns cache_shard 1633653 items/sec p50=5337 p90=9694 p95=11207 ns cache 286069 items/sec p50=72509 p90=82304 p95=85009 ns numa 319403 items/sec p50=63745 p90=73480 p95=76505 ns system 308461 items/sec p50=66561 p90=75714 p95=78048 ns Signed-off-by: Breno Leitao <leitao@debian.org> Signed-off-by: Tejun Heo <tj@kernel.org>
2026-03-30kbuild: rust: provide an option to inline C helpers into RustGary Guo
A new experimental Kconfig option, `RUST_INLINE_HELPERS` is added to allow C helpers (which were created to allow Rust to call into inline/macro C functions without having to re-implement the logic in Rust) to be inlined into Rust crates without performing global LTO. If the option is enabled, the following is performed: * For helpers, instead of compiling them to an object file to be linked into vmlinux, they're compiled to LLVM IR bitcode. Two versions are generated: one for built-in code (`helpers.bc`) and one for modules (`helpers_module.bc`, with -DMODULE defined). This ensures that C macros/inlines that behave differently for modules (e.g. static calls) function correctly when inlined. * When a Rust crate or object is compiled, instead of generating an object file, LLVM bitcode is generated. * llvm-link is invoked with --internalize to combine the helper bitcode with the crate bitcode. This step is similar to LTO, but this is much faster since it only needs to inline the helpers. * clang is invoked to turn the combined bitcode into a final object file. * Since clang may produce LLVM bitcode when LTO is enabled, and objtool requires ELF input, $(cmd_ld_single) is invoked to ensure the object is converted to ELF before objtool runs. The --internalize flag tells llvm-link to treat all symbols in helpers.bc using `internal` linkage [1]. This matches the behavior of `clang` on `static inline` functions, and avoids exporting the symbol from the object file. To ensure that RUST_INLINE_HELPERS is not incompatible with BTF, we pass the -g0 flag when building helpers. See commit 5daa0c35a1f0 ("rust: Disallow BTF generation with Rust + LTO") for details. We have an intended triple mismatch of `aarch64-unknown-none` vs `aarch64-unknown-linux-gnu`, so we pass --suppress-warnings to llvm-link to suppress it. I considered adding some sort of check that KBUILD_MODNAME is not present in helpers_module.bc, but this is actually not so easy to carry out because .bc files store strings in a weird binary format, so you cannot just grep it for a string to check whether it ended up using KBUILD_MODNAME anywhere. [ Andreas writes: For the rnull driver, enabling helper inlining with this patch gives an average speedup of 2% over the set of 120 workloads that we publish on [2]. 2026-03-23lib: Move crypto library tests to Runtime Testing menuEric Biggers
Currently the kconfig options for the crypto library KUnit tests appear in the menu: -> Library routines -> Crypto library routines However, this is the only content of "Crypto library routines". I.e., it is empty when CONFIG_KUNIT=n. This is because the crypto library routines themselves don't have (or need to have) prompts. Since this usually ends up as an unnecessary empty menu, let's remove this menu and instead source the lib/crypto/tests/Kconfig file from lib/Kconfig.debug inside the "Runtime Testing" menu: -> Kernel hacking -> Kernel Testing and Coverage -> Runtime Testing This puts the prompts alongside the ones for most of the other lib/ KUnit tests. 2026-03-16lockdep: Raise default stack trace limits when KASAN is enabledMikhail Gavrilov
KASAN-enabled kernels with LOCKDEP and PREEMPT_FULL hit "BUG: MAX_STACK_TRACE_ENTRIES too low!" within 9-23 hours of normal desktop use. The root cause is a feedback loop between KASAN slab tracking and lockdep: every KASAN-tracked slab allocation saves a stack trace via stack_trace_save() -> arch_stack_walk(). The unwinder calls is_bpf_text_address(), which under PREEMPT_FULL can trigger RCU deferred quiescent-state processing -> swake_up_one() -> lock_acquire() -> lockdep validate_chain() -> save_trace(). This means KASAN's own stack captures indirectly generate new lockdep dependency chains, consuming the buffer from both directions. /proc/lockdep_stats at the moment of overflow confirms that stack-trace entries is the sole exhausted resource: stack-trace entries: 524288 [max: 524288] <- 100% full number of stack traces: 22080 <- unique after dedup dependency chains: 164665 [max: 524288] <- only 31% used direct dependencies: 45270 [max: 65536] <- 69% lock-classes: 2811 [max: 8192] <- 34% 22080 genuinely unique traces averaging ~24 frames each fill the buffer in under a day. The hash-based deduplication (12593b7467f9) is working correctly -- the traces are simply all different due to the deep and varied call stacks from GPU + filesystem + Wine/Proton + KASAN instrumentation. Raise the LOCKDEP_STACK_TRACE_BITS default from 19 to 21 when KASAN is enabled (2M entries, +12MB). This is negligible compared to KASAN's own shadow memory overhead (~12.5% of total RAM). Scale LOCKDEP_STACK_TRACE_HASH_BITS accordingly to maintain dedup efficiency. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull debugobjects fix from Thomas Gleixner: "A single fix for debugobjects. The deferred page initialization prevents debug objects from allocating slab pages until the initialization is complete. That causes depletion of the pool and disabling of debugobjects. The reason is that debugobjects uses __GFP_HIGH for allocations as it might be invoked from arbitrary contexts. When PREEMPT_COUNT is disabled there is no way to know whether the context is safe to set __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM. This worked until v6.18. Since then allocations w/o a reclaim flag cause new_slab() to end up in alloc_frozen_pages_nolock_noprof(), which returns early when deferred page initialization has not yet completed. Work around that when PREEMPT_COUNT is enabled as the preempt counter allows debugobjects to add __GFP_KSWAPD_RECLAIM to the GFP flags when the context is preemtible. When PREEMPT_COUNT is disabled the context is unknown and the reclaim bit can't be set because the caller might hold locks which might deadlock in the allocator. That makes debugobjects depend on PREEMPT_COUNT || !DEFERRED_STRUCT_PAGE_INIT, which limits the coverage slightly, but keeps it functional for most cases" * tag 'core-debugobjects-2026-03-01' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: debugobject: Make it work with deferred page initialization - again

2026-02-25lib/Kconfig.debug: Require a release version of LLVM 22 for context analysisNathan Chancellor
Using a prerelease version as a minimum supported version for CONFIG_WARN_CONTEXT_ANALYSIS was reasonable to do while LLVM 22 was the development version so that people could immediately build from main and start testing and validating this in their own code. However, it can be problematic when using prerelease versions of LLVM 22, such as Android clang 22.0.1 (the current android mainline compiler) or when bisecting LLVM between llvmorg-22-init and llvmorg-23-init, to build the kernel, as all compiler fixes for the context analysis may not be present, potentially resulting in warnings that can easily turn into errors. Now that LLVM 22 is released as 22.1.0, upgrade the check to require at least this version to ensure that a user's toolchain actually has all the changes needed for a smooth experience with context analysis. 2026-02-23Remove WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM kernel config optionLinus Torvalds
This config option goes way back - it used to be an internal debug option to random.c (at that point called DEBUG_RANDOM_BOOT), then was renamed and exposed as a config option as CONFIG_WARN_UNSEEDED_RANDOM, and then further renamed to the current CONFIG_WARN_ALL_UNSEEDED_RANDOM. It was all done with the best of intentions: the more limited rate-limited reports were reporting some cases, but if you wanted to see all the gory details, you'd enable this "ALL" option. However, it turns out - perhaps not surprisingly - that when people don't care about and fix the first rate-limited cases, they most certainly don't care about any others either, and so warning about all of them isn't actually helping anything. And the non-ratelimited reporting causes problems, where well-meaning people enable debug options, but the excessive flood of messages that nobody cares about will hide actual real information when things go wrong. I just got a kernel bug report (which had nothing to do with randomness) where two thirds of the the truncated dmesg was just variations of random: get_random_u32 called from __get_random_u32_below+0x10/0x70 with crng_init=0 and in the process early boot messages had been lost (in addition to making the messages that _hadn't_ been lost harder to read). The proper way to find these things for the hypothetical developer that cares - if such a person exists - is almost certainly with boot time tracing. That gives you the option to get call graphs etc too, which is likely a requirement for fixing any problems anyway. See Documentation/trace/boottime-trace.rst for that option. And if we for some reason do want to re-introduce actual printing of these things, it will need to have some uniqueness filtering rather than this "just print it all" model. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next Pull networking updates from Paolo Abeni: "Core & protocols: - A significant effort all around the stack to guide the compiler to make the right choice when inlining code, to avoid unneeded calls for small helper and stack canary overhead in the fast-path. This generates better and faster code with very small or no text size increases, as in many cases the call generated more code than the actual inlined helper. - Extend AccECN implementation so that is now functionally complete, also allow the user-space enabling it on a per network namespace basis. - Add support for memory providers with large (above 4K) rx buffer. Paired with hw-gro, larger rx buffer sizes reduce the number of buffers traversing the stack, dincreasing single stream CPU usage by up to ~30%. - Do not add HBH header to Big TCP GSO packets. This simplifies the RX path, the TX path and the NIC drivers, and is possible because user-space taps can now interpret correctly such packets without the HBH hint. - Allow IPv6 routes to be configured with a gateway address that is resolved out of a different interface than the one specified, aligning IPv6 to IPv4 behavior. - Multi-queue aware sch_cake. This makes it possible to scale the rate shaper of sch_cake across multiple CPUs, while still enforcing a single global rate on the interface. - Add support for the nbcon (new buffer console) infrastructure to netconsole, enabling lock-free, priority-based console operations that are safer in crash scenarios. - Improve the TCP ipv6 output path to cache the flow information, saving cpu cycles, reducing cache line misses and stack use. - Improve netfilter packet tracker to resolve clashes for most protocols, avoiding unneeded drops on rare occasions. - Add IP6IP6 tunneling acceleration to the flowtable infrastructure. - Reduce tcp socket size by one cache line. - Notify neighbour changes atomically, avoiding inconsistencies between the notification sequence and the actual states sequence. - Add vsock namespace support, allowing complete isolation of vsocks across different network namespaces. - Improve xsk generic performances with cache-alignment-oriented optimizations. - Support netconsole automatic target recovery, allowing netconsole to reestablish targets when underlying low-level interface comes back online. Driver API: - Support for switching the working mode (automatic vs manual) of a DPLL device via netlink. - Introduce PHY ports representation to expose multiple front-facing media ports over a single MAC. - Introduce "rx-polarity" and "tx-polarity" device tree properties, to generalize polarity inversion requirements for differential signaling. - Add helper to create, prepare and enable managed clocks. Device drivers: - Add Huawei hinic3 PF etherner driver. - Add DWMAC glue driver for Motorcomm YT6801 PCIe ethernet controller. - Add ethernet driver for MaxLinear MxL862xx switches - Remove parallel-port Ethernet driver. - Convert existing driver timestamp configuration reporting to hwtstamp_get and remove legacy ioctl(). - Convert existing drivers to .get_rx_ring_count(), simplifing the RX ring count retrieval. Also remove the legacy fallback path. - Ethernet high-speed NICs: - Broadcom (bnxt, bng): - bnxt: add FW interface update to support FEC stats histogram and NVRAM defragmentation - bng: add TSO and H/W GRO support - nVidia/Mellanox (mlx5): - improve latency of channel restart operations, reducing the used H/W resources - add TSO support for UDP over GRE over VLAN - add flow counters support for hardware steering (HWS) rules - use a static memory area to store headers for H/W GRO, leading to 12% RX tput improvement - Intel (100G, ice, idpf): - ice: reorganizes layout of Tx and Rx rings for cacheline locality and utilizes __cacheline_group* macros on the new layouts - ice: introduces Synchronous Ethernet (SyncE) support - Meta (fbnic): - adds debugfs for firmware mailbox and tx/rx rings vectors - Ethernet virtual: - geneve: introduce GRO/GSO support for double UDP encapsulation - Ethernet NICs consumer, and embedded: - Synopsys (stmmac): - some code refactoring and cleanups - RealTek (r8169): - add support for RTL8127ATF (10G Fiber SFP) - add dash and LTR support - Airoha: - AN8811HB 2.5 Gbps phy support - Freescale (fec): - add XDP zero-copy support - Thunderbolt: - add get link setting support to allow bonding - Renesas: - add support for RZ/G3L GBETH SoC - Ethernet switches: - Maxlinear: - support R(G)MII slow rate configuration - add support for Intel GSW150 - Motorcomm (yt921x): - add DCB/QoS support - TI: - icssm-prueth: support bridging (STP/RSTP) via the switchdev framework - Ethernet PHYs: - Realtek: - enable SGMII and 2500Base-X in-band auto-negotiation - simplify and reunify C22/C45 drivers - Micrel: convert bindings to DT schema - CAN: - move skb headroom content into skb extensions, making CAN metadata access more robust - CAN drivers: - rcar_canfd: - add support for FD-only mode - add support for the RZ/T2H SoC - sja1000: cleanup the CAN state handling - WiFi: - implement EPPKE/802.1X over auth frames support - split up drop reasons better, removing generic RX_DROP - additional FTM capabilities: 6 GHz support, supported number of spatial streams and supported number of LTF repetitions - better mac80211 iterators to enumerate resources - initial UHR (Wi-Fi 8) support for cfg80211/mac80211 - WiFi drivers: - Qualcomm/Atheros: - ath11k: support for Channel Frequency Response measurement - ath12k: a significant driver refactor to support multi-wiphy devices and and pave the way for future device support in the same driver (rather than splitting to ath13k) - ath12k: support for the QCC2072 chipset - Intel: - iwlwifi: partial Neighbor Awareness Networking (NAN) support - iwlwifi: initial support for U-NII-9 and IEEE 802.11bn - RealTek (rtw89): - preparations for RTL8922DE support - Bluetooth: - implement setsockopt(BT_PHY) to set the connection packet type/PHY - set link_policy on incoming ACL connections - Bluetooth drivers: - btusb: add support for MediaTek7920, Realtek RTL8761BU and 8851BE - btqca: add WCN6855 firmware priority selection feature" * tag 'net-next-7.0' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next: (1254 commits) bnge/bng_re: Add a new HSI net: macb: Fix tx/rx malfunction after phy link down and up af_unix: Fix memleak of newsk in unix_stream_connect(). net: ti: icssg-prueth: Add optional dependency on HSR net: dsa: add basic initial driver for MxL862xx switches net: mdio: add unlocked mdiodev C45 bus accessors net: dsa: add tag format for MxL862xx switches dt-bindings: net: dsa: add MaxLinear MxL862xx selftests: drivers: net: hw: Modify toeplitz.c to poll for packets octeontx2-pf: Unregister devlink on probe failure net: renesas: rswitch: fix forwarding offload statemachine ionic: Rate limit unknown xcvr type messages tcp: inet6_csk_xmit() optimization tcp: populate inet->cork.fl.u.ip6 in tcp_v6_syn_recv_sock() tcp: populate inet->cork.fl.u.ip6 in tcp_v6_connect() ipv6: inet6_csk_xmit() and inet6_csk_update_pmtu() use inet->cork.fl.u.ip6 ipv6: use inet->cork.fl.u.ip6 and np->final in ip6_datagram_dst_update() ipv6: use np->final in inet6_sk_rebuild_header() ipv6: add daddr/final storage in struct ipv6_pinfo net: stmmac: qcom-ethqos: fix qcom_ethqos_serdes_powerup() ...
