New workloads can do large bursts of call_rcu_tasks() invocations in a
short time period, followed by a quiet time period long enough to drain
all of the callbacks, followed by another burst of call_rcu_tasks()
invocations. This can cause RCU Tasks to switch back and forth between
queuing callbacks only on CPU 0 (during quiet periods) and on all CPUs
(during bursts).
Which is fine. Except for the fact that each cycle from CPU-0-only to
all-CPUs queuing and back generates three console messages, one announcing
the shift to all-CPUs queuing, another announcing the start of the shift
back to CPU-0-only queuing, and the third announcing completion of this
shift after an RCU grace period. And these console messages can overrun
console-log communications channels and obscure other console-message-based
debugging information. And the only known use for these console messages
is debugging RCU Tasks itself.
This commit therefore adds a rcupdate.rcu_task_collapse_debug module
parameter that defaults to false (suppressing these console messages).
Those debugging or otherwise playing with RCU Tasks callback queuing
auto-adjustment can set this parameter to the value true.

Add 'P' flag to the diagnostic line to indicate whether any per-cpu
rtpcp's lazy_timer is pending. this helps diagnose stalls where
rcu-task callbacks are queued but the kthread stay sleep because
the lazy_timer has not yet fired and no grace period has started.
The output is as follows:

For the smp_mb() after kthread_run() in rcu_spawn_tasks_kthread_generic()
from these commits:
'commit eacd6f04a133 ("rcu-tasks: Move Tasks RCU to its own file")'
'commit 84a8f446ffd7 ("rcu: Defer rcu_tasks_kthread() creation till
first call_rcu_tasks()")'
the memory order pairing as follows:
rcu_spawn_tasks_kthread()
->t = kthread_run(rcu_tasks_kthread, ...);
->smp_mb(); /* Ensure others see full kthread. */
->WRITE_ONCE(rcu_tasks_kthread_ptr, t);
call_rcu_tasks()
->if (READ_ONCE(rcu_tasks_kthread_ptr))
->wake_up(&rcu_tasks_cbs_wq)
->try_to_wake_up()
lock pi_lock
->smp_mb__after_spinlock()
//see full kthread
Because the 'commit d119357d0743 ("rcu-tasks: Treat only synchronous
grace periods urgently")' moved the kthread_ptr assignment into the
rcu_tasks_kthread() function, the following memory order pairings are
sufficient:
The runq's raw_spinlock/unlock(or smp_mb__after_spinlock()) from
wake_up_process() in kthread_run() and __schedule() provides memory order
barrier when the kthread is first scheduled, this ensures the kthread's
func observes all of the kthread's initialization.
The kthread's smp_store_release(&rtp->kthread_ptr, ...) in
rcu_tasks_kthread() and smp_load_acquire(&rtp->kthread_ptr)
in call_rcu_tasks_generic() compose release/acquire pairing, the
cumulativity of smp_store_release() propagates visibility of the kthread's
initialization through the scheduler chain.
This commit therefore remove smp_mb() in rcu_spawn_tasks_kthread_generic().

Add srcu_segcblist_advance() and srcu_segcblist_accelerate() wrappers
that forward to the core rcu_segcblist_advance() and
rcu_segcblist_accelerate() functions, and switch all SRCU (srcutree.c)
and Tasks RCU (tasks.h) callers to use these wrappers.
This isolates SRCU and Tasks RCU from upcoming changes to the core
advance/accelerate functions, which will switch to struct
rcu_gp_seq for dual normal/expedited GP tracking. Because SRCU and
Tasks RCU use only normal GP sequences, their wrappers will maintain the
existing unsigned long interface.

->if (havekthread && !needwake && !timer_pending(&rtpcp->lazy_timer))

even if the rtp->kthread_ptr already exists at this point."
->if (needwake && READ_ONCE(rtp->kthread_ptr))
->irq_work_queue(&rtpcp->rtp_irq_work)
For the above scenarios, if the call_rcu_tasks() is not called again
afterward, the rcu_tasks_kthread will not have a chance to be wakeup,
the test_rcu_tasks_callback() will never be called, the boot-time tests
failed can happen, this commit therefore check havekthread variable, if
it's false and the rtpcp->cblist is empty, set needwake variable is true,
if the rtp->kthread_ptr exist, the rtpcp->rtp_irq_work can be queued to
wakeup rcu_tasks_kthread.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

This commit saves more than 500 lines of RCU code by re-implementing
RCU Tasks Trace in terms of SRCU-fast. Follow-up work will remove
more code that does not cause problems by its presence, but that is no
longer required.
This variant places smp_mb() in rcu_read_{,un}lock_trace(), and in the
same place that srcu_read_{,un}lock() would put them. These smp_mb()
calls will be removed on common-case architectures in a later commit.
In the meantime, it serves to enforce ordering between the underlying
srcu_read_{,un}lock_fast() markers and the intervening critical section,
even on architectures that permit attaching tracepoints on regions of
code not watched by RCU. Such architectures defeat SRCU-fast's use of
implicit single-instruction, interrupts-disabled, and atomic-operation
RCU read-side critical sections, which have no effect when RCU is not
watching. The aforementioned later commit will insert these smp_mb()
calls only on architectures that have not used noinstr to prevent
attaching tracepoints to code where RCU is not watching.

Currently if a user enqueue a work item using schedule_delayed_work() the
used wq is "system_wq" (per-cpu wq) while queue_delayed_work() use
WORK_CPU_UNBOUND (used when a cpu is not specified). The same applies to
schedule_work() that is using system_wq and queue_work(), that makes use
again of WORK_CPU_UNBOUND.
This lack of consistentcy cannot be addressed without refactoring the API.
system_wq is a per-CPU worqueue, yet nothing in its name tells about that
CPU affinity constraint, which is very often not required by users. Make
it clear by adding a system_percpu_wq.
The old wq will be kept for a few release cylces.

The timer and hrtimer softirq processing has moved to dedicated threads
for kernels built with CONFIG_IRQ_FORCED_THREADING=y. This results in
timers not expiring until later in early boot, which in turn causes the
RCU Tasks self-tests to hang in kernels built with CONFIG_PROVE_RCU=y,
which further causes the entire kernel to hang. One fix would be to
make timers work during this time, but there are no known users of RCU
Tasks grace periods during that time, so no justification for the added
complexity. Not yet, anyway.
This commit therefore moves the call to rcu_init_tasks_generic() from
kernel_init_freeable() to a core_initcall(). This works because the
timer and hrtimer kthreads are created at early_initcall() time.

Pull RCU updates from Frederic Weisbecker:
"SRCU:
- Introduction of the new SRCU-lite flavour with a new pair of
srcu_read_[un]lock_lite() APIs. In practice the read side using
this flavour becomes lighter by removing a full memory barrier on
LOCK and a full memory barrier on UNLOCK. This comes at the expense
of a higher latency write side with two (in the best case of a
snaphot of unused read-sides) or more RCU grace periods on the
update side which now assumes by itself the whole full ordering
guarantee against the LOCK/UNLOCK counters on both indexes, along
with the accesses performed inside.
Uretprobes is a known potential user.
Note this doesn't replace the default normal flavour of SRCU which
still behaves the same as usual.
- Add testing of SRCU-lite through rcutorture and rcuscale
- Various cleanups on the way.
Fixes:
- Allow short-circuiting RCU-TASKS-RUDE grace periods on
architectures that have sane noinstr boundaries forbidding tracing
on low-level idle and kernel entry code. RCU-TASKS is enough on
such configurations because it involves an RCU grace period that
waits for all idle tasks to either schedule out voluntarily or
enter into RCU unwatched noinstr code.
- Allow and test start_poll_synchronize_rcu() with IRQs disabled.
- Mention rcuog kthreads in relevant documentation and Kconfig help
- Various fixes and consolidations
rcutorture:
- Add --no-affinity on tools to leave the affinity setting of guests
up to the user.
- Add guest_os_delay parameter to rcuscale for better warm-up
control.
- Fix and improve some rcuscale error handling.
- Various cleanups and fixes
stall:
- Remove dead code
- Stop dumping tasks if a stalled grace period eventually ended
midway as that only produces confusing output.
- Optimize detection of stalling CPUs and avoid useless node locking
otherwise.
NOCB:
- Fix rcu_barrier() hang due to a race against callbacks
deoffloading. This is not yet used, except by rcutorture, and waits
for its promised cpusets interface.
- Remove leftover function declaration"

There are now architectures for which all deep-idle and entry-exit

not need synchronize_rcu_tasks_rude(), or will not once RCU Tasks has

Sean noted that ever since commit 152e11f6df29 ("sched/fair: Implement

mis-classifying preemption vs blocking.
Notably p->on_rq is no longer sufficient to determine if a task is
runnable or blocked -- the aforementioned commit introduces tasks that
remain on the runqueue even through they will not run again, and
should be considered blocked for many cases.
Add the task_is_runnable() helper to classify things and audit all
external users of the p->on_rq state. Also add a few comments.

Each Tasks RCU flavor keeps a count of the number of callbacks that the
current rcu_barrier_tasks*() is waiting on, but there is currently no
easy way to work out which callback is stuck. One way to do this is to
mark idle RCU-barrier callbacks by making the ->next pointer point to
the callback itself, and this commit does just that.
Later commits will use this for debug output.

The rtp->tasks_gp_seq grace-period sequence number is not a strict count,
but rather the usual RCU sequence number with the lower few bits tracking
per-grace-period state and the upper bits the count of grace periods
since boot, give or take the initial value. This commit therefore
adjusts this comment.

When RCU-TASKS-TRACE pre-gp takes a snapshot of the current task running
on all online CPUs, no explicit ordering synchronizes properly with a
context switch. This lack of ordering can permit the new task to miss
pre-grace-period update-side accesses. The following diagram, courtesy
of Paul, shows the possible bad scenario:
CPU 0 CPU 1
----- -----
// Pre-GP update side access
WRITE_ONCE(*X, 1);
smp_mb();
r0 = rq->curr;
RCU_INIT_POINTER(rq->curr, TASK_B)
spin_unlock(rq)
rcu_read_lock_trace()
r1 = X;
/* ignore TASK_B */
Either r0==TASK_B or r1==1 is needed but neither is guaranteed.
One possible solution to solve this is to wait for an RCU grace period
at the beginning of the RCU-tasks-trace grace period before taking the
current tasks snaphot. However this would introduce large additional
latencies to RCU-tasks-trace grace periods.
Another solution is to lock the target runqueue while taking the current
task snapshot. This ensures that the update side sees the latest context
switch and subsequent context switches will see the pre-grace-period
update side accesses.
This commit therefore adds runqueue locking to cpu_curr_snapshot().

This reverts commit 28319d6dc5e2ffefa452c2377dd0f71621b5bff0. The race
it fixed was subject to conditions that don't exist anymore since:
1612160b9127 ("rcu-tasks: Eliminate deadlocks involving do_exit() and RCU tasks")
This latter commit removes the use of SRCU that used to cover the
RCU-tasks blind spot on exit between the tasklist's removal and the
final preemption disabling. The task is now placed instead into a
temporary list inside which voluntary sleeps are accounted as RCU-tasks
quiescent states. This would disarm the deadlock initially reported
against PID namespace exit.

Tasks Trace RCU needs a single-byte cmpxchg(), but no such thing exists.
Therefore, rcu_trc_cmpxchg_need_qs() emulates one using field substitution
and a four-byte cmpxchg(), such that the other three bytes are always
atomically updated to their old values. This works, but results in
false-positive KCSAN failures because as far as KCSAN knows, this
cmpxchg() operation is updating all four bytes.
This commit therefore encloses the cmpxchg() in a data_race() and adds
a single-byte instrument_atomic_read_write(), thus telling KCSAN exactly
what is going on so as to avoid the false positives.

Currently, all waits for grace periods sleep at TASK_UNINTERRUPTIBLE,
regardless of RCU flavor. This has worked well, but there have been
cases where a longer-than-average Tasks RCU grace period has triggered
softlockup splats, many of them, before the Tasks RCU CPU stall warning
appears. These softlockup splats unnecessarily consume console bandwidth
and complicate diagnosis of the underlying problem. Plus a long but not
pathologically long Tasks RCU grace period might trigger a few softlockup
splats before completing normally, which generates noise for no good
reason.
This commit therefore causes Tasks RCU grace periods to sleep at TASK_IDLE
priority. If there really is a persistent problem, the eventual Tasks
RCU CPU stall warning will flag it, and without the extra noise.

The current code will scan the entirety of each per-CPU list of exiting
tasks in ->rtp_exit_list with interrupts disabled. This is normally just
fine, because each CPU typically won't have very many tasks in this state.
However, if a large number of tasks block late in do_exit(), these lists
could be arbitrarily long. Low probability, perhaps, but it really
could happen.
This commit therefore occasionally re-enables interrupts while traversing
these lists, inserting a dummy element to hold the current place in the
list. In kernels built with CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT=y, this re-enabling happens
after each list element is processed, otherwise every one-to-two jiffies.

Holding a mutex across synchronize_rcu_tasks() and acquiring
that same mutex in code called from do_exit() after its call to
exit_tasks_rcu_start() but before its call to exit_tasks_rcu_stop()
results in deadlock. This is by design, because tasks that are far
enough into do_exit() are no longer present on the tasks list, making
it a bit difficult for RCU Tasks to find them, let alone wait on them
to do a voluntary context switch. However, such deadlocks are becoming
more frequent. In addition, lockdep currently does not detect such
deadlocks and they can be difficult to reproduce.
In addition, if a task voluntarily context switches during that time
(for example, if it blocks acquiring a mutex), then this task is in an
RCU Tasks quiescent state. And with some adjustments, RCU Tasks could
just as well take advantage of that fact.
This commit therefore eliminates these deadlock by replacing the
SRCU-based wait for do_exit() completion with per-CPU lists of tasks
currently exiting. A given task will be on one of these per-CPU lists for
the same period of time that this task would previously have been in the
previous SRCU read-side critical section. These lists enable RCU Tasks
to find the tasks that have already been removed from the tasks list,
but that must nevertheless be waited upon.
The RCU Tasks grace period gathers any of these do_exit() tasks that it
must wait on, and adds them to the list of holdouts. Per-CPU locking
and get_task_struct() are used to synchronize addition to and removal
from these lists.

This commit continues the elimination of deadlocks involving do_exit()
and RCU tasks by causing exit_tasks_rcu_start() to add the current
task to a per-CPU list and causing exit_tasks_rcu_stop() to remove the
current task from whatever list it is on. These lists will be used to
track tasks that are exiting, while still accounting for any RCU-tasks
quiescent states that these tasks pass though.

In order for RCU Tasks to reliably maintain per-CPU lists of exiting
tasks, those lists must be initialized before it is possible for tasks
to exit, especially given that the boot CPU is not necessarily CPU 0
(an example being, powerpc kexec() kernels). And at the time that
rcu_init_tasks_generic() is called, a task could potentially exit,
unconventional though that sort of thing might be.
This commit therefore moves the calls to cblist_init_generic() from
functions called from rcu_init_tasks_generic() to a new function named
tasks_cblist_init_generic() that is invoked from rcu_init().
This constituted a bug in a commit that never went to mainline, so
there is no need for any backporting to -stable.
