Pull ceph updates from Ilya Dryomov: "The two things of note here are the disablement of inline data support and a new lazyio mount option to enable LAZYIO behavior globally (instead of via an ioctl on a per-file basis), both from Xiubo. Despite being over a decade old, the inline data feature never lost its experimental status -- it has always been off by default and required passing --yes-i-really-mean-it flag to be turned on. It was officially deprecated in 2020 and is now in the process of being removed on the MDS side. For now it's still possible to re-enable it in Kconfig, but the code will eventually be dropped from the kernel client entirely. Outside of that we have a number of bug fixes, a series from Tal to help phase out older page APIs, some cleanups from Max and a large pile of LLM-based hardening patches. 6 daysceph: convert ceph_fill_inline_data() to take a folioTal Zussman
Convert the internals to folio APIs and pass a folio in from ceph_fill_inode(). The kmap_atomic()/memcpy() pair becomes memcpy_to_folio(), which also flushes the dcache, so drop the explicit flush from the folio creation path. When a locked folio is passed in, the callers flush after filling it, so the flush in memcpy_to_folio() is redundant there, but harmless. This removes the last caller of find_or_create_page() in ceph and saves six calls to compound_head(). The page_folio() call added in ceph_fill_inode() goes away once the locked page plumbing is converted. Remove extern from the function declaration while at it. 6 daysceph: keep the inode, not the name, when a dentry lease expiresXiubo Li
ceph_d_delete() drops a dentry once its lease expires. Since ceph uses inode_just_drop() for ->drop_inode, that last dput also evicts the inode, and ceph_evict_inode() throws away a page cache that the caps still vouch for. A buffered write that outlasts the dentry lease (30s by default on the MDS side) is therefore flushed and closed, and the reopen re-reads everything from the OSDs even though both the caps and the pages were still valid. Commit 52dd0f1b3f94 ("ceph: use generic_delete_inode() for ->drop_inode") removed the ->drop_inode hook because "positive dentry and corresponding inode are always accompanied in MDS reply. So no need to keep inode in the cache after dropping all its aliases". That holds for the metadata, but it ties the lifetime of the page cache to the lifetime of a name, and the two are validated by entirely different things: a dentry is only as good as its lease, while cached pages are good for as long as the caps that back them. So bring the hook back and keep a regular file's inode while it still has cached pages and still holds real caps. The name is unaffected: an expired dentry is unhashed exactly as before, and the next lookup goes to the MDS and finds the retained inode via ceph_get_inode() -> iget5_locked(), which is keyed on the vino from the reply rather than on any dentry. ceph_fill_inode() then refills it without touching the mapping. Retention is bounded by the page cache itself, and reclaim runs in that order rather than the other way round. A retained inode holds no reference of its own, but it does not sit on the inode LRU either: mapping_shrinkable() is false while real folios are present, so the inode shrinker never sees it. Page reclaim frees its pages like any other file's; emptying the mapping is what makes it shrinkable and puts it on the LRU, and only then can the inode shrinker evict it. Unmount evicts it regardless, as evict_inodes() walks sb->s_inodes rather than the LRU. MDS cap trim needs one more thing. trim_caps_cb() releases an unused cap indirectly, by pruning the inode's aliases and letting the eviction that follows call __ceph_remove_caps(). Retaining the inode breaks that chain in both of its cases: an inode whose aliases are already gone was never reachable that way, and after d_prune_aliases() the iput() that ceph_iterate_session_caps() owes the inode no longer evicts it. Give that path an explicit override in CEPH_I_EVICT_ON_FINAL_IPUT_BIT, which ceph_drop_inode() consumes with test_and_clear_bit(). Being one-shot is the point: it lets the MDS force this inode out now without permanently changing how the inode is cached afterwards, which is why I_DONTCACHE is not used here. 6 daysceph: disable inline data supportXiubo Li
Inline data support has been deprecated in the CephFS MDS and is being formally removed. Existing inline data can be migrated to data pool objects via MDS scrub (see PR #44359). Add CONFIG_CEPH_FS_INLINE_DATA (default n) to gate all inline data code in the kclient. When disabled, CEPH_FEATURE_MDS_INLINE_DATA is not advertised to the MDS, which will then refuse to open files that still have inline data, returning -EPERM and preventing silent data corruption that would occur if the kclient tried to read inline data from OSD objects that do not contain it. The conditional compilation is centralized in fs/ceph/super.h, where static inline helpers make all the inline data code compile out cleanly when the option is disabled, so that removing the option later only touches that one place. ceph_inline_version() returns CEPH_INLINE_NONE when the option is disabled, which makes every version comparison in the disabled build constant-fold to false; the stubbed out ceph_uninline_data() and ceph_fill_inline_data() are then unreachable. The MDS still carries inline_version + inline_data on the wire, so the reply and cap grant parsers keep consuming those fields even with the option disabled, only skipping them, to keep the decode pointer in sync for the fields that follow. This config option will be kept for a transitional period to allow existing CephFS deployments to migrate inline data via MDS scrub. Once the migration period ends, the option and all inline data code will be permanently removed. Users upgrading from an older Ceph release should ensure all inline data has been migrated before deploying a kclient with this option disabled: 1. Enable and run MDS scrub to uninline existing data 2. Cachefiles learns to cache the most common class of files properly, files that are created or truncated, written once sequentially and closed. So far it relied on the backing filesystem's idea of what is stored and asked with SEEK_DATA and SEEK_HOLE before every read it prepared, two seeks per read, and the backing filesystem is free to insert or remove runs of zeros which produces false positives and false negatives. The object type in the state xattr is now actually set to CACHEFILES_CONTENT_{SINGLE,ALL,BACKFS_MAP} instead of zero. For files written contiguously the type is ALL, the backing file's i_size tracks how much is cached and the object size lives in the xattr, and reads skip the seeks entirely. Netfslib queries the cache occupancy through a new ->query_occupancy() method that returns up to two extents at once, ->prepare_read() only limits the size of a cache read anymore and a new ->collect_write() lets the cache update its metadata once a contiguous run of writes completes. The state xattr is preset when the tmpfile is created so ENOSPC from setxattr can't scrap a fully written cache file. Two fixes for this followed, one for resize handling where the cache's idea of the size can be stale and one for an unset error that hung a request on a failed cache write. Preparatory work converts file positions that can't be negative to uoff_t, removes the writethrough code whose locking looked like it could deadlock with ceph snapshots, makes the deprecated PG_private_2 support opt-in so mm can get its page bit back, adds helpers for the NETFS_RREQ_ALL_QUEUED barriers and adds the cache object id to the read and write tracepoints. 2026-10-16fscache, cachefiles: Fix resize handlingDavid Howells
Fix the resize handling in fscache and cachefiles by passing down a flag to indicate if the file is being shrunk as the cache's idea of how big the file should be may be stale and thus not useful in comparison to the object's size. The issue is that netfs_perform_write() updates the network filesystem's file's i_size as it adds data to the pagecache, but the cache isn't updated until writeback flushes that data. A truncation may then scrap that data and so the cache never sees it and doesn't update before it is told to resize. In the resize, cachefiles was comparing the new size against the current cache size and then thinking the file was being expanded. Note that this is a bit more complicated for ceph than other filesystems as ceph splits the truncation of the local pagecache and fscache to after the RPC reply handler has updated the inode record - the reply handler communicates the need for the truncation finalisation through ceph inode flags. To this end, ceph is changed such that the outstanding truncation count in the inode turns into a bool and just set instead of being incremented (the code only cares if it's zero or non-zero) and then a second bool is added to record if the file was being shrunk. 2026-08-26ceph: do not cache negative dentries for snapped directoriesXiubo Li
When a LOOKUP/LOOKUPSNAP in a snapped directory returns ENOENT without a trace, ceph_finish_lookup() creates a negative dentry via d_add(dentry, NULL). For live directories this is fine — the dentry naturally expires. But for snapped directories, ceph_d_revalidate() unconditionally trusts all cached dentries (valid = 1), so a negative dentry created by a transient error persists forever, hiding entries that genuinely exist in the snapshot. Only cache negative dentries for live (non-snapshotted) parent directories. For snapped parents, skip the negative dentry so that VFS retries the lookup on the next access. Since the conditions that trigger a negative dentry (MDS transient error, local ENOENT shortcut, or MDS null dentry lease) are all rare in snapped directories, the performance impact of this change is negligible. 2026-06-22ceph: add diagnostic timeout loop to wait_caps_flush()Alex Markuze
Convert wait_caps_flush() from a silent indefinite wait into a diagnostic wait loop that periodically dumps pending cap flush state. The underlying wait semantics remain intact: callers still wait until the requested cap flushes complete. The difference is that long stalls now produce actionable diagnostics instead of looking like a silent hang. CEPH_CAP_FLUSH_MAX_DUMP_ENTRIES limits the number of entries emitted per diagnostic dump, and CEPH_CAP_FLUSH_MAX_DUMP_ITERS limits the number of timed diagnostic dumps before the wait continues silently. When more entries exist than the per-dump limit, a truncation count is reported. When the dump iteration limit is reached, a final suppression message is emitted so the transition to silence is explicit. The diagnostic dump collects flush entry data under cap_dirty_lock into a bounded on-stack array, then prints after releasing the lock. This avoids holding the spinlock across printk calls. A null cf->ci on the global flush list indicates a bug since all cap_flush entries are initialized with a valid ci before being added. Signal this with WARN_ON_ONCE while still printing enough context for debugging. READ_ONCE is used for the i_last_cap_flush_ack field, which is read outside the inode lock domain. Flush tids are monotonically increasing and acks are processed in order under i_ceph_lock, so the latest ack tid is always the most recently written value. Add a ci pointer to struct ceph_cap_flush so that the diagnostic dump can identify which inode each pending flush belongs to. The new i_last_cap_flush_ack field tracks the latest acknowledged flush tid per inode for diagnostic correlation. This improves reset-drain observability and is also useful for existing sync and writeback troubleshooting paths. 2026-06-22ceph: convert inode flags to named bit positions and atomic bitopsAlex Markuze
Define named bit-position constants for all CEPH_I_* inode flags and derive the bitmask values from them. This gives every flag a named _BIT constant usable with the test_bit/set_bit/clear_bit family. The intentionally unused bit position 1 is documented inline. Convert all flag modifications to use atomic bitops (set_bit, clear_bit, test_and_clear_bit). The previous code mixed lockless atomic ops on some flags (ERROR_WRITE, ODIRECT) with non-atomic read-modify-write (|= / &= ~) on other flags sharing the same unsigned long. A concurrent non-atomic RMW can clobber an adjacent lockless atomic update -- for example, a lockless clear_bit(ERROR_WRITE) could be silently resurrected by a concurrent ci->i_ceph_flags |= CEPH_I_FLUSH under the spinlock. Using atomic bitops for all modifications eliminates this class of race entirely. Flags whose only users are now the _BIT form (ERROR_WRITE, ASYNC_CHECK_CAPS) have their old mask defines removed to document that callers must use the _BIT constant with the set_bit/test_bit family. ERROR_FILELOCK and SHUTDOWN retain their mask defines because they are still used via bitmask tests in lockless readers (ceph_inode_is_shutdown, reconnect_caps_cb). The direct assignment in ceph_finish_async_create() is converted from i_ceph_flags = CEPH_I_ASYNC_CREATE to set_bit(). This inode is I_NEW at this point -- still invisible to other threads and guaranteed to have zero flags from alloc_inode -- so either form is safe, but set_bit() keeps the conversion uniform. The ones without initializer are suspectible to random crashes. (I can imagine it could even be possible to exploit this bug to elevate privileges.) Unfortunately, these Ceph functions are undocumented and its semantics can only be derived from the code. I see that ceph_mdsc_build_path() initializes the structure only on success, but not on error. Calling ceph_mdsc_free_path_info() after a failed ceph_mdsc_build_path() call does not even make sense, but that's what all callers do, and for it to be safe, the structure must be zero-initialized. 2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

Remove the ceph_base64_encode() and ceph_base64_decode() functions and replace their usage with the generic base64_encode() and base64_decode() helpers from lib/base64. This eliminates the custom implementation in Ceph, reduces code duplication, and relies on the shared Base64 code in lib. The helpers preserve RFC 3501-compliant Base64 encoding without padding, so there are no functional changes. This change also improves performance: encoding is about 2.7x faster and decoding achieves 43-52x speedups compared to the previous local implementation. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs Pull vfs inode updates from Christian Brauner: "This contains a series I originally wrote and that Eric brought over the finish line. It moves out the i_crypt_info and i_verity_info pointers out of 'struct inode' and into the fs-specific part of the inode. So now the few filesytems that actually make use of this pay the price in their own private inode storage instead of forcing it upon every user of struct inode. The pointer for the crypt and verity info is simply found by storing an offset to its address in struct fsverity_operations and struct fscrypt_operations. This shrinks struct inode by 16 bytes. I hope to move a lot more out of it in the future so that struct inode becomes really just about very core stuff that we need, much like struct dentry and struct file, instead of the dumping ground it has become over the years. On top of this are a various changes associated with the ongoing inode lifetime handling rework that multiple people are pushing forward: - Stop accessing inode->i_count directly in f2fs and gfs2. They simply should use the __iget() and iput() helpers - Make the i_state flags an enum - Rework the iput() logic Currently, if we are the last iput, and we have the I_DIRTY_TIME bit set, we will grab a reference on the inode again and then mark it dirty and then redo the put. This is to make sure we delay the time update for as long as possible We can rework this logic to simply dec i_count if it is not 1, and if it is do the time update while still holding the i_count reference Then we can replace the atomic_dec_and_lock with locking the ->i_lock and doing atomic_dec_and_test, since we did the atomic_add_unless above - Add an icount_read() helper and convert everyone that accesses inode->i_count directly for this purpose to use the helper - Expand dump_inode() to dump more information about an inode helping in debugging - Add some might_sleep() annotations to iput() and associated helpers" * tag 'vfs-6.18-rc1.inode' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs: fs: add might_sleep() annotation to iput() and more fs: expand dump_inode() inode: fix whitespace issues fs: add an icount_read helper fs: rework iput logic fs: make the i_state flags an enum fs: stop accessing ->i_count directly in f2fs and gfs2 fsverity: check IS_VERITY() in fsverity_cleanup_inode() fs: remove inode::i_verity_info btrfs: move verity info pointer to fs-specific part of inode f2fs: move verity info pointer to fs-specific part of inode ext4: move verity info pointer to fs-specific part of inode fsverity: add support for info in fs-specific part of inode fs: remove inode::i_crypt_info ceph: move crypt info pointer to fs-specific part of inode ubifs: move crypt info pointer to fs-specific part of inode f2fs: move crypt info pointer to fs-specific part of inode ext4: move crypt info pointer to fs-specific part of inode fscrypt: add support for info in fs-specific part of inode fscrypt: replace raw loads of info pointer with helper function

Validate that r_parent matches the encoded parent inode and update to the correct inode if a mismatch is detected. [ idryomov: folded a follow-up fix from Alex to drop extra reference from ceph_get_reply_dir() in ceph_fill_trace(): ceph_get_reply_dir() may return a different, referenced inode when r_parent is stale and the parent directory lock is not held. ceph_fill_trace() used that inode but failed to drop the reference when it differed from req->r_parent, leaking an inode reference. 2025-09-09ceph: fix race condition validating r_parent before applying stateAlex Markuze
Add validation to ensure the cached parent directory inode matches the directory info in MDS replies. This prevents client-side race conditions where concurrent operations (e.g. rename) cause r_parent to become stale between request initiation and reply processing, which could lead to applying state changes to incorrect directory inodes. [ idryomov: folded a kerneldoc fixup and a follow-up fix from Alex to move CEPH_CAP_PIN reference when r_parent is updated: When the parent directory lock is not held, req->r_parent can become stale and is updated to point to the correct inode. However, the associated CEPH_CAP_PIN reference was not being adjusted. The CEPH_CAP_PIN is a reference on an inode that is tracked for accounting purposes. Moving this pin is important to keep the accounting balanced. When the pin was not moved from the old parent to the new one, it created two problems: The reference on the old, stale parent was never released, causing a reference leak. A reference for the new parent was never acquired, creating the risk of a reference underflow later in ceph_mdsc_release_request(). This patch corrects the logic by releasing the pin from the old parent and acquiring it for the new parent when r_parent is switched. This ensures reference accounting stays balanced. ] Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Alex Markuze <amarkuze@redhat.com> Reviewed-by: Viacheslav Dubeyko <Slava.Dubeyko@ibm.com> Signed-off-by: Ilya Dryomov <idryomov@gmail.com>

2024-08-12netfs: Fix handling of USE_PGPRIV2 and WRITE_TO_CACHE flagsDavid Howells
The NETFS_RREQ_USE_PGPRIV2 and NETFS_RREQ_WRITE_TO_CACHE flags aren't used correctly. The problem is that we try to set them up in the request initialisation, but we the cache may be in the process of setting up still, and so the state may not be correct. Further, we secondarily sample the cache state and make contradictory decisions later. The issue arises because we set up the cache resources, which allows the cache's ->prepare_read() to switch on NETFS_SREQ_COPY_TO_CACHE - which triggers cache writing even if we didn't set the flags when allocating. Fix this in the following way: (1) Drop NETFS_ICTX_USE_PGPRIV2 and instead set NETFS_RREQ_USE_PGPRIV2 in ->init_request() rather than trying to juggle that in netfs_alloc_request(). (2) Repurpose NETFS_RREQ_USE_PGPRIV2 to merely indicate that if caching is to be done, then PG_private_2 is to be used rather than only setting it if we decide to cache and then having netfs_rreq_unlock_folios() set the non-PG_private_2 writeback-to-cache if it wasn't set. (3) Split netfs_rreq_unlock_folios() into two functions, one of which contains the deprecated code for using PG_private_2 to avoid accidentally doing the writeback path - and always use it if USE_PGPRIV2 is set. (4) As NETFS_ICTX_USE_PGPRIV2 is removed, make netfs_write_begin() always wait for PG_private_2. This function is deprecated and only used by ceph anyway, and so label it so. (5) Drop the NETFS_RREQ_WRITE_TO_CACHE flag and use fscache_operation_valid() on the cache_resources instead. This has the advantage of picking up the result of netfs_begin_cache_read() and fscache_begin_write_operation() - which are called after the object is initialised and will wait for the cache to come to a usable state. Just reverting ae678317b95e[1] isn't a sufficient fix, so this need to be applied on top of that. Without this as well, things like: rcu: INFO: rcu_sched detected expedited stalls on CPUs/tasks: { and: WARNING: CPU: 13 PID: 3621 at fs/ceph/caps.c:3386 may happen, along with some UAFs due to PG_private_2 not getting used to wait on writeback completion. 2024-07-03ceph: drop usage of page_indexKairui Song
page_index is needed for mixed usage of page cache and swap cache, for pure page cache usage, the caller can just use page->index instead. It can't be a swap cache page here, so just drop it. 2024-04-29netfs: Replace PG_fscache by setting folio->private and marking dirtyDavid Howells
When dirty data is being written to the cache, setting/waiting on/clearing the fscache flag is always done in tandem with setting/waiting on/clearing the writeback flag. The netfslib buffered write routines wait on and set both flags and the write request cleanup clears both flags, so the fscache flag is almost superfluous. The reason it isn't superfluous is because the fscache flag is also used to indicate that data just read from the server is being written to the cache. The flag is used to prevent a race involving overlapping direct-I/O writes to the cache. Change this to indicate that a page is in need of being copied to the cache by placing a magic value in folio->private and marking the folios dirty. Then when the writeback code sees a folio marked in this way, it only writes it to the cache and not to the server. If a folio that has this magic value set is modified, the value is just replaced and the folio will then be uplodaded too. With this, PG_fscache is no longer required by the netfslib core, 9p and afs. Ceph and nfs, however, still need to use the old PG_fscache-based tracking. To deal with this, a flag, NETFS_ICTX_USE_PGPRIV2, now has to be set on the flags in the netfs_inode struct for those filesystems. This reenables the use of PG_fscache in that inode. 9p and afs use the netfslib write helpers so get switched over; cifs, for the moment, does page-by-page manual access to the cache, so doesn't use PG_fscache and is unaffected. 2024-02-07ceph: always set initial i_blkbits to CEPH_FSCRYPT_BLOCK_SHIFTXiubo Li
The fscrypt code will use i_blkbits to setup ci_data_unit_bits when allocating the new inode, but ceph will initiate i_blkbits ater when filling the inode, which is too late. Since ci_data_unit_bits will only be used by the fscrypt framework so initiating i_blkbits with CEPH_FSCRYPT_BLOCK_SHIFT is safe. 2023-12-28netfs: Optimise away reads above the point at which there can be no dataDavid Howells
Track the file position above which the server is not expected to have any data (the "zero point") and preemptively assume that we can satisfy requests by filling them with zeroes locally rather than attempting to download them if they're over that line - even if we've written data back to the server. Assume that any data that was written back above that position is held in the local cache. Note that we have to split requests that straddle the line. Make use of this to optimise away some reads from the server. We need to set the zero point in the following circumstances: (1) When we see an extant remote inode and have no cache for it, we set the zero_point to i_size. (2) On local inode creation, we set zero_point to 0. (3) On local truncation down, we reduce zero_point to the new i_size if the new i_size is lower. (4) On local truncation up, we don't change zero_point. (5) On local modification, we don't change zero_point. (6) On remote invalidation, we set zero_point to the new i_size. (7) If stored data is discarded from the pagecache or culled from fscache, we must set zero_point above that if the data also got written to the server. (8) If dirty data is written back to the server, but not fscache, we must set zero_point above that. (9) If a direct I/O write is made, set zero_point above that. Assuming the above, any read from the server at or above the zero_point position will return all zeroes. The zero_point value can be stored in the cache, provided the above rules are applied to it by any code that culls part of the local cache.
