Pull ceph updates from Ilya Dryomov:
"The two things of note here are the disablement of inline data support
and a new lazyio mount option to enable LAZYIO behavior globally
(instead of via an ioctl on a per-file basis), both from Xiubo.
Despite being over a decade old, the inline data feature never lost
its experimental status -- it has always been off by default and
required passing --yes-i-really-mean-it flag to be turned on. It was
officially deprecated in 2020 and is now in the process of being
removed on the MDS side. For now it's still possible to re-enable it
in Kconfig, but the code will eventually be dropped from the kernel
client entirely.
Outside of that we have a number of bug fixes, a series from Tal to
help phase out older page APIs, some cleanups from Max and a large
pile of LLM-based hardening patches.
Xiubo is also back in a maintainer role, replacing Slava"

ceph_netfs_issue_read() declares err without an initializer. On the
unencrypted, non-sparse success path nothing assigns it, then the
out: label does if (err) netfs_read_subreq_terminated(subreq).
With CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL_PATTERN, err is 0xaaaaaaaa (nonzero), so
the subrequest is terminated while the OSD READ is still in flight.
netfs then frees the rolling buffer that the OSD iterator still
points at, causing a KASAN UAF / oops, and finish_netfs_read()
terminates the same subrequest a second time. CONFIG_INIT_STACK_ALL_ZERO
hides it because err happens to be 0.
Restore the err = 0 initializer so a successful submit leaves
completion to finish_netfs_read() only.

When ceph_netfs_check_write_begin() finds the folio dirty in an older
snap context, it drops the folio, waits for that snap context to be
flushed and then returns -EAGAIN so that the write is retried.
However, since commit fac47b43c760 ("netfs: do not unlock and put the
folio twice"), netfs_write_begin() retries only when ->check_write_begin()
returns 0 with *foliop cleared -- every error, -EAGAIN included, is
returned as is. The -EAGAIN thus propagates up to write(2), which fails
with "Resource temporarily unavailable" once the dirty data has been
flushed, rather than being retried.
This is easily hit by buffered writers rewriting dirty pages while
snapshots are being taken, e.g. a kernel build linking vmlinux into a
directory under a snapshot schedule:
ld: final link failed: Resource temporarily unavailable
Return the wait_event_killable() result as is so that netfs re-gets the
folio and retries on success.

Add a 'lazyio' mount option to the kernel Ceph client that enables
LazyIO globally for all regular file opens on a mount. This is the
kclient equivalent of the 'client_force_lazyio=true' config option
in the ceph-fuse userspace client.
When 'lazyio' is specified, CEPH_FILE_MODE_LAZY is automatically
added to every regular file's fmode at open time in ceph_open() and
ceph_atomic_open(), causing the I/O paths to request
CEPH_CAP_FILE_LAZYIO from the MDS. This permits buffered I/O via
the page cache even when multiple clients have the file open for
write — beneficial for HPC workloads that can tolerate relaxed
cache coherency.
The mount option is exposed as 'lazyio' / 'nolazyio' via the VFS
fsparam_flag_no mechanism and supports remount.

The read offset is validated against i_size but never against
inline_len, and the two fields come from the MDS independently. When
a read starts past the end of the inline data, the subtraction
len = min_t(size_t, iinfo->inline_len - subreq->start, subreq->len);
underflows and min_t() ends up with subreq->len, so copy_to_iter()
reads past the end of the inline buffer straight into the user
buffer. A malicious or buggy MDS reporting a short inline payload
together with an inflated i_size can thus leak kernel heap memory to
userspace.
Bail out with -ENODATA when the offset is not within the inline
data.

The MDS decides how much inline data to attach to a reply, and the
client parses inline_len without any upper bound: ceph_decode_need()
only verifies that the message actually carries that many bytes.
ceph_fill_inline_data() then copies the data into a single folio
with no length check, so a malicious or buggy MDS returning more
inline data than the folio can hold writes past its end.
Clamp the length to folio_size() so both callers, handle_cap_grant()
and fill_inode(), are covered.

ceph_process_folio_batch() assigns the result of
is_write_congestion_happened() to fsc->write_congested for every folio
it collects. The code it replaced only ever set write_congested to true
here, leaving the decrement paths to clear it once writeback_count
drops below CONGESTION_OFF_THRESH. The unconditional assignment means
that a sync writeback that runs while the count sits between the off and
on thresholds clears the flag on its first folio, and background
writeback resumes early.
Only set the flag here, as before.

ceph_process_folio_batch() calls is_write_congestion_happened(), which
increments fsc->writeback_count, before calling
move_dirty_folio_in_page_array(). If the fscrypt bounce page allocation
there fails, the folio is redirtied and never makes it into the page
array, but the count is never dropped.
write_congested is only cleared when a decrement falls below
CONGESTION_OFF_THRESH, so the leaked counts set congestion early and
eventually leave write_congested set for good. Every WB_SYNC_NONE
writeback then returns 0 and background writeback stops entirely.
Bump the count only once the folio is in the page array.

write_folio_nounlock() marks the folio with PG_private_2 via
ceph_set_page_fscache() and starts an async write to the cache via
ceph_fscache_write_to_cache(). PG_private_2 is only cleared once that
write completes.
If the OSD write fails, the error paths return without waiting for the
cache write. On retry, ceph_find_incompatible() would wait for
writeback, but not for PG_private_2, before calling
write_folio_nounlock() again, which would trip the VM_BUG_ON_FOLIO() in
folio_start_private_2().
Wait for any pending cache write before starting writeback on the
folio. Do so before bumping the writeback congestion count and
allocating the possibly mempool-backed OSD request, so that a thread
sleeping on the cache I/O does not hold either while it waits.

When ceph_inc_osd_stopping_blocker() fails, ceph_submit_write()
redirties and unlocks the folios remaining in ceph_wbc->fbatch.
However, none of those folios are locked at this point: locked folios
were moved to ceph_wbc->pages[] and removed from the fbatch by
ceph_process_folio_batch(). Unlocking them triggers
VM_BUG_ON_FOLIO(!folio_test_locked(folio)) in folio_unlock(), or
unlocks a folio locked by another task.
This error path also returns -EIO without fully cleaning up the folios in
ceph_wbc->pages[]: their references are never dropped, fscrypt bounce
pages are never freed, the writeback congestion count is never
decremented, and the pages array is leaked. ceph_wbc->locked_pages is
also left non-zero, so ceph_writepages_start() loops back around and
hits BUG_ON(ceph_wbc.locked_pages).
Leave the fbatch folios alone, as ceph_writepages_start() drops their
references when releasing the batch, and unwind ceph_wbc->pages[] the
same way writepages_finish() would have. Abort writeback in
ceph_writepages_start() instead of continuing, matching the handling
of ceph_inc_osd_stopping_blocker() failure on entry, as the OSD
client is being torn down and further writeback cannot make progress.
An LLM was used to verify that the cleanup was comprehensive, and
suggested aborting the writeback instead of continuing.

Convert the internals to folio APIs and pass a folio in from
ceph_fill_inode(). The kmap_atomic()/memcpy() pair becomes
memcpy_to_folio(), which also flushes the dcache, so drop the explicit
flush from the folio creation path. When a locked folio is passed in,
the callers flush after filling it, so the flush in memcpy_to_folio()
is redundant there, but harmless.

ceph_netfs_issue_read() pins pages with iov_iter_get_pages_alloc2() for
encrypted inodes and attaches them with own_pages=false. If
ceph_inc_osd_stopping_blocker() then fails, the request is dropped
without calling finish_netfs_read(), so the page array and the
references taken on those pages leak: ceph_osd_data_release() only
frees pages when own_pages is true, and __free_pages() would be the
wrong destructor for GUP-pinned pages.

Inline data support has been deprecated in the CephFS MDS and is
being formally removed. Existing inline data can be migrated to
data pool objects via MDS scrub (see PR #44359).
Add CONFIG_CEPH_FS_INLINE_DATA (default n) to gate all inline data
code in the kclient. When disabled, CEPH_FEATURE_MDS_INLINE_DATA is
not advertised to the MDS, which will then refuse to open files that
still have inline data, returning -EPERM and preventing silent data
corruption that would occur if the kclient tried to read inline data
from OSD objects that do not contain it.
The conditional compilation is centralized in fs/ceph/super.h, where
static inline helpers make all the inline data code compile out
cleanly when the option is disabled, so that removing the option
later only touches that one place. ceph_inline_version() returns
CEPH_INLINE_NONE when the option is disabled, which makes every
version comparison in the disabled build constant-fold to false;
the stubbed out ceph_uninline_data() and ceph_fill_inline_data() are
then unreachable.
The MDS still carries inline_version + inline_data on the wire, so
the reply and cap grant parsers keep consuming those fields even
with the option disabled, only skipping them, to keep the decode
pointer in sync for the fields that follow.
This config option will be kept for a transitional period to
allow existing CephFS deployments to migrate inline data via
MDS scrub. Once the migration period ends, the option and all
inline data code will be permanently removed.
Users upgrading from an older Ceph release should ensure all inline
data has been migrated before deploying a kclient with this option
disabled:
1. Enable and run MDS scrub to uninline existing data
2. Disable inline_data on the filesystem:
ceph fs set <fs> inline_data false --yes-i-really-really-mean-it

Pull MM updates from Andrew Morton:
- "selftests/mm: improve khugepaged coverage" (Kiryl Shutsemau):
Give khugepaged a proper workout. Extend the tests to all supported
mTHP orders, check exactly which windows collapsed, and make scan
completion deterministic. Race collapse against faults, pinning, fork
and remap; verify that the contents survive.
Add coverage for whole-page-table zaps and memory pressure too.
- "selftests/mm: separate GUP microbenchmarking from functional testing"
(Sarthak Sharma):
Untangle GUP benchmarking from correctness testing. Move the
benchmark into tools/mm, add a standalone harness-based GUP selftest,
and move shared helpers into tools/lib/mm. Give each tool one job
instead of mixing timing measurements with correctness checks.
Cover the mapping, pinning and batch-size combinations explicitly.
- "mm: Switch device DAX to section-based vmemmap optimization" (Muchun
Song):
Apply section-based vmemmap optimization to device DAX. Rework the
backing metadata layout to save memory while preserving the handling
of device memory hotplug and its different alignment and lifetime
requirements.
- "mm: Introduce section-based vmemmap optimization for HugeTLB"
(Muchun Song):
Cut the memory consumed by HugeTLB's struct page array with
section-based vmemmap optimization. Arrange the metadata so large
huge pages need fewer backing pages, while keeping initialization,
teardown and the various hugepage configurations straight.
- "mm/huge_memory: clean up and decouple the anon and file split
helpers" (Kairui Song):
Separate anonymous and file-backed folio splitting, which have rather
different locking and bookkeeping requirements. Move the work into
separate helpers, drop dead checks and tidy swap-cache handling. Fix
error paths, including one that could leave a folio frozen.
Keep the swap cache cases separate from file-cache splitting.
- "mm: Unconditional per-VMA locks and cleanups" (Dave Hansen):
Make per-VMA locking unconditional and clean up the old conditional
code around it. This removes configuration-dependent plumbing and
lets callers depend on one locking model rather than carrying both
cases along.
- "memcg: remove the v1 soft limit" (Shakeel Butt):
Remove the old cgroup v1 memory soft-limit machinery. This has long
since been superseded by the newer memory-control interfaces; hauling
around a separate reclaim scheme for it no longer buys us much.
- "read proc/pid/smaps_rollup under per-vma lock" (Suren Baghdasaryan):
Read /proc/PID/smaps_rollup using per-VMA locks where possible,
rather than holding mmap_lock across the entire walk. Retain the
contention fallback and add tearing tests. This considerably reduces
latency when another thread is busy changing its mappings.
- "mm/damon: introduce data access-as-a-data attribute" (SJ Park):
Teach DAMON to expose memory access observations as data attributes,
making them available to the probe and filtering machinery. Extend
the interfaces, documentation and tests so the new information can be
used rather than merely collected.
- "Remove PG_private by using page/folio->private checks instead" (Zi
Yan):
Get rid of PG_private and use the folio's private pointer to say
whether private data is attached. Convert the filesystem users,
including erofs, f2fs and md, and clean up the old accessors and
flags. There are a few special cases, notably swapcache and hugetlb,
which need explicit care.
- "mm: make userland page table freeing RCU-safe" (Lorenzo Stoakes):
Make freeing userspace page tables safe against RCU readers. Sort out
the page-table lifetime and locking rules so walkers cannot stumble
over freed tables while mappings are being torn down.
- "make unused huge shrinker memcg aware" (Qi Zheng):
Make shmem's unused-huge-folio shrinker aware of memory cgroups, so
reclaim can find those folios under the right memcg. Wire up the
per-memcg tracking and its lifetime rules, and give the shrinklist
its own lockdep class to avoid spurious dependency reports.
- "mm: Drop pxd_ERROR()" (Anshuman Khandual):
Remove the old pxd_ERROR() page-table checks and their
architecture-specific baggage. Simplify the common page-table
interfaces and callers now that these checks no longer serve a
useful purpose.
- "memcg: group struct fields by access pattern" (Shakeel Butt):
Rearrange memcg's hot and cold fields according to how they're
actually accessed. Keep frequently updated counters and their
neighboring state from fighting over cachelines and reduce needless
cacheline traffic.
- "mm/damon/core: fix the size charged for a filter-trimmed region"
(Donggeun Yoo):
Fix DAMOS quota accounting when a filter trims a monitoring region.
Charge only the part left after filtering, not the original region,
and add KUnit coverage. Previously the excluded memory could eat into
the quota and make schemes run more slowly than requested.
- "mm/damon: add kunit and selftests for probes and probe weights" (SJ
Park):
Add more tests for DAMON probes and their weights, including
validation and the results reported to userspace. This is mostly
about catching regressions in the newer probe infrastructure before
they become harder to diagnose.
- "mm: memcontrol: constify the read side of the read side of the memcg
API" (Tal Zussman):
Mark the read-only parts of the memcg interface const, from folio and
lruvec accessors to counters and swap helpers. Most of this is
mechanical, but it makes the contracts clearer and lets the compiler
catch accidental writes.
- "mm/damon/vaddr: support {prep,apply}_probes" (SJ Park):
Support the new prepare/apply probe operations in DAMON's
virtual-address backend. This brings vaddr monitoring into line with
the probe infrastructure and makes the added probe types useful there
too.
- "mm/mglru: clean up folio counters and flag usage" (Kairui Song):
Simplify MGLRU's folio counters and flag handling. Remove redundant
accounting paths and make the state transitions easier to follow
without changing the intended reclaim policy.
- "arch, mm/execmem: resolve confusion about set_direct_map_valid_noflush()"
(Mike Rapoport (Microsoft)):
Clarify and straighten out the set_direct_map_valid_noflush()
interface across architectures and execmem. Make the requested
mapping changes and the callers' expectations agree, rather than
relying on subtly different architecture behavior.
- "mm: zswap: free cold writeback folios promptly" (Alexandre Ghiti):
Free zswap writeback folios as soon as their disk write completes.
They are cold temporary buffers, so putting them on the LRU only
makes reclaim rediscover them later. Extend swap-cache dropbehind and
let zswap keep these folios off the LRU altogether.
- "mm: gup: cleanup gup_fast call chain" (Aristeu Rozanski):
Clean up the GUP-fast call chain and simplify how the fast-path
helpers pass their arguments and results around. Keep the page-pin
behavior the same while making the call sequence easier to maintain.
- "mm: optimize zone-device memmap initialization" (Li Zhe):
Speed up initialization of zone-device struct pages. Avoid redundant
work when setting up large device-memory ranges, where touching every
descriptor can get expensive.
- "mm/zswap: shrink zswap_entry via a pool id" (Jianyue Wu):
Reduce the size of zswap_entry by storing a compact pool identifier
instead of a full pointer. Keep the pool lookup and lifetime handling
correct while saving per-entry metadata.
- "mm/damon: support access monitoring of hugetlb-backed memory"
(Krishna Iyer):
Let DAMON monitor hugetlb-backed memory too. Extend the relevant
access checks and add coverage so those mappings no longer fall
through a hole in the monitoring machinery.
- "mm/execmem: fixes and cleanups for the ROX cache" (Mike Rapoport):
Tidy execmem's read-only-executable cache and fix its handling of the
awkward allocation and release cases. The aim is to make the cache's
ownership and permission transitions more predictable.
- "zsmallc: remove old object read API" (Sergey Senozhatsky):
Drop zsmalloc's old object-read API and move its remaining users to
the supported access mechanism. This removes a duplicate interface
which we no longer need.
- "mm/mempolicy: stop copying state in the interleave paths" (Gregory
Price):
Stop copying mempolicy state in the interleave paths when a reference
to the existing policy will do. This avoids extra work and makes the
ownership rules less obscure.
- "mm/mglru: speed up inc_min_seq() and fix cold/hot inversions" (Barry
Song):
Make MGLRU's generation advancement cheaper and fix cases where cold
and hot folios end up in the wrong order. Adjust the counter and list
handling so reclaim doesn't keep passing over the better eviction
candidates.
- "mm: Fix MF_DELAYED handling on memory failure" (Lisa Wang):
Treat MF_DELAYED as a partially completed memory-failure operation,
not an outright failure. Propagate that result correctly through
shmem and the generic handler, fix the extra-reference accounting,
and add tests for the resulting SIGBUS behavior.
- "tools/mm/page_owner_sort: fix --sort, add module filter, improve
usage" (Ye Liu):
Fix page_owner_sort's --sort handling, add module-based filtering and
make the usage output more helpful. This makes the tool less
frustrating when tracking down who is holding on to pages.
- "mm/damon: move damos filter range arguments validation to core" (SJ
Park):
Move DAMOS filter range validation into the core, where all callers
can share it. Also close the sysfs read-twice races which could pass
inconsistent ranges, and add tests for invalid input.
- "mm/damon: misc cleanups" (Zenghui Yu):
Clean up a collection of small DAMON rough edges in the core,
interfaces and tests. No large behavior change here, just simpler
code and fewer opportunities for confusion.
- "mm/damon: cleanup code, add test cases, and update guidances in
docs" (SJ Park):
Clean up DAMON's core and interfaces, add missing test cases and
bring the documentation into line with the code. These changes should
make the newer facilities easier to understand and maintain.
- "mm/damon: introduce hugepage_size probe filter" (SJ Park):
Add a DAMON probe filter for hugepage size. Let users select a range
of folio sizes through sysfs, validate the range and document the new
interface, so monitoring can concentrate on memory backed by the
desired hugepage sizes.
- "selftests/mm: pagemap_ioctl test fixes and cleanups" (Zenghui Yu):
Fix some pagemap ioctl test assumptions and clean up their setup and
reporting. Make failures point to the operation that went wrong
rather than to test harness bookkeeping.
- "mm: avoid large folio splits when swap is unavailable" (Johannes
Weiner):
Avoid splitting large folios merely to attempt swap when no swap
space is available. There is little point paying for an expensive
split when reclaim cannot actually swap the resulting pages out.
- "mm: workingset: fix the shadow node budget under MGLRU" (Hui Zhu):
Fix the workingset shadow-node budget with MGLRU enabled. Keep the
shadow entries within the intended limits so refault tracking does
not quietly consume more metadata than it should.
- "selftests/mm: TAP output and global-state fixes" (Song Hu):
Fix selftests which produce misleading TAP output or fail to restore
global settings after a run. A test ought to leave the system as it
found it, particularly when a whole suite follows behind.
- "mm: remove page_swap_entry()" (Tal Zussman):
Remove page_swap_entry() and convert its remaining users to the folio
and swap-entry helpers. Lose an old page-level interface and make the
swap paths a little more consistent.
- "mm: refactor zonelist constructors and iterators" (Gregory Price):
Refactor the zonelist construction and walk helpers to reduce
duplicated logic. Keep the allocation ordering rules intact while
making it clearer how zones are selected.
- "mm: kmemleak: batch the struct page scan" (Breno Leitao):
Scan adjacent struct pages in batches instead of taking kmemleak_lock
once for every single page. This preserves scan coverage and the
lock-hold bound, while cutting overhead substantially on debug
kernels.
- "mm/damon: misc improvements in tests and documents" (Zenghui Yu):
Fix some DAMON selftests which leave kdamond running or fail under
Python safe-path mode, and improve the KUnit coverage and
documentation. Nothing especially glamorous, but these are worth
doing.
- "mm/damon: introduce probe_hits_wsum DAMOS core filter" (SJ Park):
Add a DAMOS core filter using weighted probe-hit counts. This gives
schemes another way to select regions based on what the monitoring
probes observed.
- "mm/mglru: fix ineffective memory protection for non-kswapd reclaim"
(Ridong Chen):
Fix MGLRU's memory protection handling for reclaim outside kswapd.
The protection settings weren't having the intended effect in these
paths, leaving protected memory more exposed than requested.
- "mm/damon: improve readability, clarity and test coverage" (SJ Park):
Simplify a handful of DAMON core helpers, clarify their behavior and
expand test coverage. There are no intended userspace-visible changes
in this batch.
- "mm: replace PF_KCOMPACTD/PF_KSWAPD with kthread_func()" (Kefeng
Wang):
Stop identifying reclaim and compaction workers through the PF_KSWAPD
and PF_KCOMPACTD task flags. Use their kthread functions instead and
remove the redundant flag plumbing.
- "mm/hugetlb: fix surplus accounting and availability checks during
demotion" (Longlong Xia):
Fix HugeTLB surplus accounting and availability checks when demoting
huge pages. Keep the counters and reservation decisions consistent as
one huge page turns into several smaller ones.
- "mm/damon: add kunit tests for probe_hits handling and probe params
validation" (Jason Angelov):
Add KUnit tests for DAMON probe-hit handling and invalid probe
parameters. These cover edge cases that were too easy to miss in
ordinary monitoring tests.
- "mm/damon: fix misc bugs in kunit, quota goals and sysfs refresh_ms"
(SJ Park):
Fix a few DAMON bugs in KUnit tests, quota-goal handling and the
sysfs refresh interval. Small fixes, but the incorrect results and
control behavior were real.
- "mm: zswap: optimize zswap invalidate and store" (Kefeng Wang):
Simplify zswap's invalidate and store paths to avoid avoidable
lookups and work. Keep the entry lifetime rules intact while making
those frequent operations cheaper.
- "mm: replace custom ratelimiting logic" (Pedro Falcato):
Replace hand-rolled MM rate limiting with the common kernel helpers.
There is no need to maintain another local version of the same
mechanism.
- "mm/vmalloc: minor cleanups" (Ye Liu):
Tidy some vmalloc initialization and reporting code, and pull
duplicated vmap-area insertion work into a helper. No functional
changes are intended.
- "mm/mglru: clean up isolate_folios for readability and clarity"
(Ridong Chen):
Clean up MGLRU's isolate_folios() so the decisions are easier to read
and verify. Keep reclaim behavior unchanged while removing
unnecessary twists in the control flow.
- "Catch automatic storage in IDA and Maple Tree definitions" (Yury
Norov):
Catch IDA and maple-tree definitions placed in automatic storage
where the lifetime rules are wrong or easy to get wrong. Add checks
so such mistakes are harder to slip through unnoticed.
- "mm, swap: some random fixes and cleanups" (Kemeng Shi):
Fix and simplify a few unrelated swap paths, removing redundant work
and tidying up error handling. A small collection of things which
were better fixed than left lying around.
- "mm/page_io: folio conversion cleanups" (Tal Zussman):
Finish some page-to-folio conversions in swap I/O, removing obsolete
wrappers and using folio operations consistently. The I/O behavior is
intended to remain the same.
- "mm/swap: skip empty clusters in the swapoff scan" (Youngjun Park):
Skip empty swap clusters during swapoff instead of walking slots
which have nothing to release. This avoids pointless work on sparsely
used swap devices.
- "mm: trace: decode architecture-specific VMA flags" (Meijing Zhao):
Teach the VMA trace output to decode architecture-specific flags,
rather than leaving them as unexplained bits. That should make
tracing a good deal more useful when debugging unusual mappings.
- "mm, swap: don't spin on a bad swap entry" (Breno Leitao):
Stop repeatedly retrying a swap entry which is already known to be
bad. Make the error path terminate cleanly instead of wasting CPU
chasing an entry that cannot be used.
- "mm/page_isolation: fix UBSAN shift-out-of-bounds in
isolate_single_pageblock" (Qi Xi):
Fix an out-of-range shift in isolate_single_pageblock() and tighten
its associated boundary handling. UBSAN found the issue; the result
should be more robust pageblock isolation.
- "mm: khugepaged: fix tracepoint UAF" (Vernon Yang):
Fix a use-after-free in khugepaged tracepoint handling. Make sure the
information recorded by tracing stays valid for as long as the trace
event needs it.
- "mm/damon: fix DAMOS bugs in core, paddr and vaddr" (SJ Park):
Fix several DAMOS problems across the core and physical- and
virtual-address backends. The changes close error cases and bring the
implementations back into agreement.
- "mm/hugetlb_cgroup: move the per-node usage along with the folio"
(Hongfu Li):
Move HugeTLB per-node usage accounting when folios migrate between
nodes or are reparented to another cgroup. Otherwise numa_stat can
retain stale charges and even underflow when the folio is freed.
- "docs/core-api: memory-allocation: add k[mz]alloc_obj() and clarify
kmalloc" (Mike Rapoport):
Document the typed k[mz]alloc_obj() allocation helpers and clear up
some kmalloc guidance. Make it easier for callers to choose the right
interface.
- "selftests/mm: Validate selections and scope memfd_secret setup"
(Tianyi Chen):
Check selftest selections before running and confine memfd_secret
setup to the cases that actually need it. Avoid confusing failures
caused by the test harness itself.
- "mm/damon: move zero damos quota target_value handling to the core
layer" (SJ Park):
Handle a zero DAMOS quota goal target in the core rather than making
each user of the interface invent its own rule. Keep quota decisions
consistent across callers.
- "mm/damon: Introduce a huge page collapsing mechanism using auto
tuning" (Asier Gutierrez):
Add an auto-tuned DAMON mechanism for collapsing huge pages. Use
monitoring feedback to decide when collapse is worthwhile rather than
forcing one fixed policy onto every workload.
- "kmemleak: fix stale documentation and raise the verbose default"
(Breno Leitao):
Bring the kmemleak documentation up to date and require a third
confirming scan before verbose kernels print a suspected leak. The
extra scan helps suppress transient false positives in noisy debug
builds.
- "mm/memory: improve insert_pages() error handling" (Avi Weiss):
Tighten insert_pages() error handling so partial failures are
reported and cleaned up consistently. The caller should not have to
guess how far the operation got.
- "mm/damon: allow NULL or unstarted damon_ctx parameter for
damon_call()" (SJ Park):
Make damon_call() handle NULL and not-yet-started contexts safely.
Simplify the rules for callers and avoid an indefinite wait on an
invalid state.
- "mm/damon: introduce pgidle_set probe filter type" (SJ Park):
Add a pgidle_set DAMON probe filter, giving monitoring users another
way to select pages by their idle-tracking state. Wire it through the
filter interfaces and tests.
- "mm/damon/core: remove unused helper functions" (Cheng-Han Wu):
Remove DAMON core helpers which no longer have callers. Keep the API
surface smaller rather than retaining dead code just in case.
- "mm: stop calling pmd_folio() on special PMDs" (Gregory Price):
Avoid calling pmd_folio() on special PMD mappings that have no struct
page. The old assumption could fault in procfs walkers; use the
normal-folio checks and handle those mappings properly.
- "mm: remove three unused helpers from mm.h" (Tal Zussman):
Remove three unused helpers from mm.h. Fewer obsolete interfaces for
the next person to stumble over.
- "mm/damon: improvements in efficiency, error handling, documents"
(Liew Rui Yan):
Skip needless DAMOS quota work once the quota is full, propagate a
missing sysfs error and tidy a couple of comments. The ignored error
could make a monitoring-start request appear successful when it
wasn't.
- "docs/mm/damon/design: add explanation of nr_snapshots" (Liew Rui
Yan):
Explain DAMON's nr_snapshots accounting in the design documentation
and straighten out the associated terminology. Make it clearer what
users should expect from that counter.
- "selftests/cgroup: fixes for test_zswap on single core VM" (Wilson
Felipe Pereira):
Fix two test_zswap failures on single-CPU VMs. Wait for the exiting
child's cgroup to become unpopulated before reconfiguring it, and
avoid another test assumption which breaks under constrained
scheduling.
- "docs/ksm: fix advisor documentation and comment" (Jinjiang Tu):
Correct the KSM advisor documentation and a misleading code comment.
Keep the description aligned with how the advisor actually works.
- "Fix bugs in HugeTLB allocation when mem_cgroup_charge_hugetlb()
fails" (Ackerley Tng):
Fix HugeTLB allocation cleanup when the memcg charge fails. Make sure
failure exits undo what was allocated rather than leaving stale
accounting or resources behind.
- "mm, memcg: fix memory.peak reset clobbering other fds' watermark"
(Ridong Chen):
Fix memory.peak reset handling so resetting one file descriptor
doesn't overwrite the watermark kept for another. Keep those per-open
measurements independent as intended.
- "mm: reject zone device folios in more folio walkers" (Gregory
Price):
Reject zone-device folios in page walkers that cannot safely handle
them. Extend the existing checks rather than assuming every folio has
ordinary system-memory backing.
- "percpu: remove code with no effect" (Sang-Heon Jeon):
Remove a few pieces of percpu code which no longer do anything. There
is no reason to keep maintaining dead paths.

This is another run of the Coccinelle script for converting kmalloc()
family of allocations to kmalloc_obj() via the existing rules in
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci
This catches both the set of kmalloc() uses added since the first
kmalloc_obj() conversions in v7.0 and adds a large group missed in the
first pass due to Coccinelle not interacting well with the cleanup.h
scoped_...() family of macros[1]. I worked around this with spatch's
"--macro-file" argument to a file with all the scoped_...() macros mapped
to Coccinelle's YACFE_ITERATOR[2] as that was the closest viable control
flow indicator I could find.
Build tested allmodconfig on x86, arm64, arm, loongarch, mips, powerpc,
riscv, and s390 with no new warnings.

ceph_dirty_folio() takes a wrbuffer claim on each newly dirtied folio: it
bumps i_wrbuffer_ref (taking an ihold() on the 0->1 transition) and
attaches the snap_context to folio->private. That claim is released only
by ceph_put_wrbuffer_cap_refs(), which for a submitted write runs from
writepages_finish().
In ceph_submit_write(), if ceph_inc_osd_stopping_blocker() fails -- which
happens during umount -- the request is aborted before submission: the
already-collected folios are only redirtied and unlocked, so
writepages_finish() never runs and the claim is leaked.
redirty_page_for_writepage() -> folio_redirty_for_writepage() ->
filemap_dirty_folio() sets PG_dirty directly and does not go through
->dirty_folio, so ceph_dirty_folio() is not re-entered to rebalance it.
Because every subsequent writeback also fails the osd_stopping_blocker,
i_wrbuffer_ref never returns to 0, the ihold() is never dropped, and the
inode cannot be evicted:
VFS: Busy inodes after unmount of ceph
kernel BUG at fs/super.c:650!
Release the orphaned claim in the abort path before redirtying, via
ceph_undo_wrbuffer_claim(): detach the snap_context, drop the wrbuffer
reference (letting i_wrbuffer_ref reach 0 and iput() the inode), and drop
the snap_context reference -- i.e. do what writepages_finish() would have
done for these never-submitted folios.
Only the locked_pages entries are undone; folios still in the fbatch were
never dirty-cleared by this call (folio_clear_dirty_for_io() is the
ownership-transfer point, and a successful move NULLs the fbatch slot), so
they hold no claim this call owns.

ceph_put_page_vector() was paired with ceph_get_direct_page_vector(),
which was removed in commit 97a385e55829 ("libceph: remove
ceph_get_direct_page_vector()"). Its only remaining caller,
finish_netfs_read(), uses it to put a page vector allocated with
iov_iter_get_pages_alloc2(), which is confusing. Open-code the
put_page() loop and kvfree() there instead.
The caller passed dirty = false, so this also removes the dead dirty
branch and with it a call to the deprecated set_page_dirty_lock().

__ceph_pool_perm_get() has six allocations for building OSD STAT
requests, five of which used GFP_NOFS and one (the page vector
allocation) used GFP_KERNEL, making them inconsistent.
The function is only called from ceph_try_get_caps() and
__ceph_get_caps(), both of which are in the user I/O path (read,
write, fallocate, mmap fault), not in the writeback path. There is
no risk of recursive writeback, so GFP_NOFS is unnecessarily
restrictive. Use GFP_KERNEL consistently for all six allocations.

write_folio_nounlock() increments fsc->writeback_count to track
in-flight writeback operations. On several error paths where the
function returns early (folio lookup failure, snapshot context
allocation failure, and writepages submission failure), the function
returns without calling atomic_long_dec_return() to decrement the
counter.
Each leaked increment keeps the counter above zero, which can prevent
the filesystem from cleanly unmounting or suspending writes.
Add atomic_long_dec_return() calls on all error paths that currently
return without decrementing the counter.

Define named bit-position constants for all CEPH_I_* inode flags and
derive the bitmask values from them. This gives every flag a named
_BIT constant usable with the test_bit/set_bit/clear_bit family.
The intentionally unused bit position 1 is documented inline.
Convert all flag modifications to use atomic bitops (set_bit,
clear_bit, test_and_clear_bit). The previous code mixed lockless
atomic ops on some flags (ERROR_WRITE, ODIRECT) with non-atomic
read-modify-write (|= / &= ~) on other flags sharing the same
unsigned long. A concurrent non-atomic RMW can clobber an
adjacent lockless atomic update -- for example, a lockless
clear_bit(ERROR_WRITE) could be silently resurrected by a
concurrent ci->i_ceph_flags |= CEPH_I_FLUSH under the spinlock.
Using atomic bitops for all modifications eliminates this class
of race entirely.
Flags whose only users are now the _BIT form (ERROR_WRITE,
ASYNC_CHECK_CAPS) have their old mask defines removed to document
that callers must use the _BIT constant with the set_bit/test_bit
family. ERROR_FILELOCK and SHUTDOWN retain their mask defines
because they are still used via bitmask tests in lockless readers
(ceph_inode_is_shutdown, reconnect_caps_cb).
The direct assignment in ceph_finish_async_create() is converted
from i_ceph_flags = CEPH_I_ASYNC_CREATE to set_bit(). This
inode is I_NEW at this point -- still invisible to other threads
and guaranteed to have zero flags from alloc_inode -- so either
form is safe, but set_bit() keeps the conversion uniform.

Add complete infrastructure for per-subvolume I/O metrics collection
and reporting to the MDS. This enables administrators to monitor I/O
patterns at the subvolume granularity, which is useful for multi-tenant
CephFS deployments.
This patch adds:
- CEPHFS_FEATURE_SUBVOLUME_METRICS feature flag for MDS negotiation
- CEPH_SUBVOLUME_ID_NONE constant (0) for unknown/unset state
- Red-black tree based metrics tracker for efficient per-subvolume
aggregation with kmem_cache for entry allocations
- Wire format encoding matching the MDS C++ AggregatedIOMetrics struct
- Integration with the existing CLIENT_METRICS message
- Recording of I/O operations from file read/write and writeback paths
- Debugfs interfaces for monitoring (metrics/subvolumes, metrics/metric_features)
Metrics tracked per subvolume include:
- Read/write operation counts
- Read/write byte counts
- Read/write latency sums (for average calculation)
The metrics are periodically sent to the MDS as part of the existing
metrics reporting infrastructure when the MDS advertises support for
the SUBVOLUME_METRICS feature.
CEPH_SUBVOLUME_ID_NONE enforces subvolume_id immutability. Following
the FUSE client convention, 0 means unknown/unset. Once an inode has
a valid (non-zero) subvolume_id, it should not change during the
inode's lifetime.

move_dirty_folio_in_page_array() may fail if the file is encrypted, the
dirty folio is not the first in the batch, and it fails to allocate a
bounce buffer to hold the ciphertext. When that happens,
ceph_process_folio_batch() simply redirties the folio and flushes the
current batch -- it can retry that folio in a future batch.
However, if this failed folio is not contiguous with the last folio that
did make it into the batch, then ceph_process_folio_batch() has already
incremented `ceph_wbc->num_ops`; because it doesn't follow through and
add the discontiguous folio to the array, ceph_submit_write() -- which
expects that `ceph_wbc->num_ops` accurately reflects the number of
contiguous ranges (and therefore the required number of "write extent"
ops) in the writeback -- will panic the kernel:
BUG_ON(ceph_wbc->op_idx + 1 != req->r_num_ops);
This issue can be reproduced on affected kernels by writing to
fscrypt-enabled CephFS file(s) with a 4KiB-written/4KiB-skipped/repeat
pattern (total filesize should not matter) and gradually increasing the
system's memory pressure until a bounce buffer allocation fails.
Fix this crash by decrementing `ceph_wbc->num_ops` back to the correct
value when move_dirty_folio_in_page_array() fails, but the folio already
started counting a new (i.e. still-empty) extent.
The defect corrected by this patch has existed since 2022 (see first
`Fixes:`), but another bug blocked multi-folio encrypted writeback until
recently (see second `Fixes:`). The second commit made it into 6.18.16,
6.19.6, and 7.0-rc1, unmasking the panic in those versions. This patch
therefore fixes a regression (panic) introduced by cac190c7674f.

When `ceph_process_folio_batch` encounters a folio past the end of the
current object, it should leave it in the batch so that it is picked up
in the next iteration.
Removing the folio from the batch means that it does not get written
back and remains dirty instead. This makes `fsync()` silently skip some
of the data, delays capability release, and breaks coherence with
`O_DIRECT`.
The link below contains instructions for reproducing the bug.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

If `locked_pages` is zero, the page array must not be allocated:
ceph_process_folio_batch() uses `locked_pages` to decide when to
allocate `pages`, and redundant allocations trigger
ceph_allocate_page_array()'s BUG_ON(), resulting in a worker oops (and
writeback stall) or even a kernel panic. Consequently, the main loop in
ceph_writepages_start() assumes that the lifetime of `pages` is confined
to a single iteration.
This expectation is currently not clear enough, as evidenced by the
recent patch which fixed an oops caused by `pages` persisting into
the next loop iteration:
- "ceph: do not propagate page array emplacement errors as batch errors"
Use an explicit BUG_ON() at the top of the loop to assert the loop's
preexisting expectation that `pages` is cleaned up by the previous
iteration. Because this is closely tied to `locked_pages`, also make it
the previous iteration's responsibility to guarantee its reset, and
verify with a second new BUG_ON() instead of handling (and masking)
failures to do so.
This patch does not change invariants, behavior, or failure modes.
The added BUG_ON() lines catch conditions that would already trigger oops,
but do so earlier for easier debugging and programmer clarity.

Following an earlier commit, ceph_process_folio_batch() no longer
returns errors because the writeback loop cannot handle them.
Since this function already indicates failure to lock any pages by
leaving `ceph_wbc.locked_pages == 0`, and the writeback loop has no way
to handle abandonment of a locked batch, change the return type of
ceph_process_folio_batch() to `void` and remove the pathological goto in
the writeback loop. The lack of a return code emphasizes that
ceph_process_folio_batch() is designed to be abort-free: that is, once
it commits a folio for writeback, it will not later abandon it or
propagate an error for that folio. Any future changes requiring "abort"
logic should follow this invariant by cleaning up its array and
resetting ceph_wbc.locked_pages appropriately.

CephFS stores file data across multiple RADOS objects. An object is the
atomic unit of storage, so the writeback code must clean only folios
that belong to the same object with each OSD request.
CephFS also supports RAID0-style striping of file contents: if enabled,
each object stores multiple unbroken "stripe units" covering different
portions of the file; if disabled, a "stripe unit" is simply the whole
object. The stripe unit is (usually) reported as the inode's block size.
Though the writeback logic could, in principle, lock all dirty folios
belonging to the same object, its current design is to lock only a
single stripe unit at a time. Ever since this code was first written,
it has determined this size by checking the inode's block size.
However, the relatively-new fscrypt support needed to reduce the block
size for encrypted inodes to the crypto block size (see 'fixes' commit),
which causes an unnecessarily high number of write operations (~1024x as
many, with 4MiB objects) and correspondingly degraded performance.
Fix this (and clarify intent) by using i_layout.stripe_unit directly in
ceph_define_write_size() so that encrypted inodes are written back with
the same number of operations as if they were unencrypted.
This patch depends on the preceding commit ("ceph: do not propagate page
array emplacement errors as batch errors") for correctness. While it
applies cleanly on its own, applying it alone will introduce a
regression. This dependency is only relevant for kernels where
ce80b76dd327 ("ceph: introduce ceph_process_folio_batch() method") has
been applied; stable kernels without that commit are unaffected.

When fscrypt is enabled, move_dirty_folio_in_page_array() may fail
because it needs to allocate bounce buffers to store the encrypted
versions of each folio. Each folio beyond the first allocates its bounce
buffer with GFP_NOWAIT. Failures are common (and expected) under this
allocation mode; they should flush (not abort) the batch.
However, ceph_process_folio_batch() uses the same `rc` variable for its
own return code and for capturing the return codes of its routine calls;
failing to reset `rc` back to 0 results in the error being propagated
out to the main writeback loop, which cannot actually tolerate any
errors here: once `ceph_wbc.pages` is allocated, it must be passed to
ceph_submit_write() to be freed. If it survives until the next iteration
(e.g. due to the goto being followed), ceph_allocate_page_array()'s
BUG_ON() will oops the worker.
Note that this failure mode is currently masked due to another bug
(addressed next in this series) that prevents multiple encrypted folios
from being selected for the same write.
For now, just reset `rc` when redirtying the folio to prevent errors in
move_dirty_folio_in_page_array() from propagating. Note that
move_dirty_folio_in_page_array() is careful never to return errors on
the first folio, so there is no need to check for that. After this
change, ceph_process_folio_batch() no longer returns errors; its only
remaining failure indicator is `locked_pages == 0`, which the caller
already handles correctly.

The ceph_uninline_data function was missing proper snapshot context
handling for its OSD write operations. Both CEPH_OSD_OP_CREATE and
CEPH_OSD_OP_WRITE requests were passing NULL instead of the appropriate
snapshot context, which could lead to unnecessary object clone.
Reproducer:
../src/vstart.sh --new -x --localhost --bluestore
// turn on cephfs inline data
./bin/ceph fs set a inline_data true --yes-i-really-really-mean-it
// allow fs_a client to take snapshot
./bin/ceph auth caps client.fs_a mds 'allow rwps fsname=a' mon 'allow r fsname=a' osd 'allow rw tag cephfs data=a'
// mount cephfs with fuse, since kernel cephfs doesn't support inline write
ceph-fuse --id fs_a -m 127.0.0.1:40318 --conf ceph.conf -d /mnt/mycephfs/
// bump snapshot seq
mkdir /mnt/mycephfs/.snap/snap1
echo "foo" > /mnt/mycephfs/test
// umount and mount it again using kernel cephfs client
umount /mnt/mycephfs
mount -t ceph fs_a@.a=/ /mnt/mycephfs/ -o conf=./ceph.conf
echo "bar" >> /mnt/mycephfs/test
./bin/rados listsnaps -p cephfs.a.data $(printf "%x\n" $(stat -c %i /mnt/mycephfs/test)).00000000
will see this object does unnecessary clone
1000000000a.00000000 (seq:2):
cloneid snaps size overlap
2 2 4 []
head - 8
but it's expected to see
10000000000.00000000 (seq:2):
cloneid snaps size overlap
head - 8
since there's no snapshot between these 2 writes
clone happened because the first osd request CEPH_OSD_OP_CREATE doesn't
pass snap context so object is created with snap seq 0, but later data
writeback is equipped with snapshot context.
snap.seq(1) > object snap seq(0), so osd does object clone.
This fix properly acquiring the snapshot context before performing
write operations.

The function move_dirty_folio_in_page_array() was created by commit
ce80b76dd327 ("ceph: introduce ceph_process_folio_batch() method") by
moving code from ceph_writepages_start() to this function.
This new function is supposed to return an error code which is checked
by the caller (now ceph_process_folio_batch()), and on error, the
caller invokes redirty_page_for_writepage() and then breaks from the
loop.
However, the refactoring commit has gone wrong, and it by accident, it
always returns 0 (= success) because it first NULLs the pointer and
then returns PTR_ERR(NULL) which is always 0. This means errors are
silently ignored, leaving NULL entries in the page array, which may
later crash the kernel.
The simple solution is to call PTR_ERR() before clearing the pointer.

The function ceph_process_folio_batch() sets folio_batch entries to
NULL, which is an illegal state. Before folio_batch_release() crashes
due to this API violation, the function ceph_shift_unused_folios_left()
is supposed to remove those NULLs from the array.
However, since commit ce80b76dd327 ("ceph: introduce
ceph_process_folio_batch() method"), this shifting doesn't happen
anymore because the "for" loop got moved to ceph_process_folio_batch(),
and now the `i` variable that remains in ceph_writepages_start()
doesn't get incremented anymore, making the shifting effectively
unreachable much of the time.
Later, commit 1551ec61dc55 ("ceph: introduce ceph_submit_write()
method") added more preconditions for doing the shift, replacing the
`i` check (with something that is still just as broken):
- if ceph_process_folio_batch() fails, shifting never happens
- if ceph_move_dirty_page_in_page_array() was never called (because
ceph_process_folio_batch() has returned early for some of various
reasons), shifting never happens
- if `processed_in_fbatch` is zero (because ceph_process_folio_batch()
has returned early for some of the reasons mentioned above or
because ceph_move_dirty_page_in_page_array() has failed), shifting
never happens
Since those two commits, any problem in ceph_process_folio_batch()
could crash the kernel, e.g. this way:

Pull mmap_prepare updates from Christian Brauner:
"Last cycle we introduce f_op->mmap_prepare() in c84bf6dd2b83 ("mm:
introduce new .mmap_prepare() file callback").
This is preferred to the existing f_op->mmap() hook as it does require
a VMA to be established yet, thus allowing the mmap logic to invoke
this hook far, far earlier, prior to inserting a VMA into the virtual
address space, or performing any other heavy handed operations.
This allows for much simpler unwinding on error, and for there to be a
single attempt at merging a VMA rather than having to possibly
reattempt a merge based on potentially altered VMA state.
Far more importantly, it prevents inappropriate manipulation of
incompletely initialised VMA state, which is something that has been
the cause of bugs and complexity in the past.
The intent is to gradually deprecate f_op->mmap, and in that vein this
series coverts the majority of file systems to using f_op->mmap_prepare.
Prerequisite steps are taken - firstly ensuring all checks for mmap
capabilities use the file_has_valid_mmap_hooks() helper rather than
directly checking for f_op->mmap (which is now not a valid check) and
secondly updating daxdev_mapping_supported() to not require a VMA
parameter to allow ext4 and xfs to be converted.
Commit bb666b7c2707 ("mm: add mmap_prepare() compatibility layer for
nested file systems") handles the nasty edge-case of nested file
systems like overlayfs, which introduces a compatibility shim to allow
f_op->mmap_prepare() to be invoked from an f_op->mmap() callback.
This allows for nested filesystems to continue to function correctly
with all file systems regardless of which callback is used. Once we
finally convert all file systems, this shim can be removed.
As a result, ecryptfs, fuse, and overlayfs remain unaltered so they
can nest all other file systems.
We additionally do not update resctl - as this requires an update to
remap_pfn_range() (or an alternative to it) which we defer to a later
series, equally we do not update cramfs which needs a mixed mapping
insertion with the same issue, nor do we update procfs, hugetlbfs,
syfs or kernfs all of which require VMAs for internal state and hooks.
We shall return to all of these later"
