git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm Pull more MM updates from Andrew Morton: - "mm: make VMA flag semantics explicit, eliminate VM_SPECIAL" (Lorenzo Stoakes): Replace VM_SPECIAL with helpers describing mapping ownership and behavior. Enforce the mmap flag rules and convert affected drivers, removing ambiguous tests shared by driver mappings and ordinary memory. - "support kselftest on nommu platform" (Hajime Tazaki): Add opt-in mmap and mremap tests for NOMMU systems. Teach the runner to avoid its fork-dependent timeout command and document the build and runtime requirements. - "mm/collapse: separate a collapse from its callers" (Kiryl Shutsemau): Separate huge-page collapse from caller policy. Replace khugepaged identity checks with explicit permissions, and separate scanning from collapse with the mmap_lock drop in one place. - "mm: implement and use vma_has_anon_rmap(), silence KCSAN" (Lorenzo Stoakes): Provide a common helper for testing whether a VMA has anonymous reverse mappings. Document the locking rules, annotate intentional concurrent reads for KCSAN, and convert the core MM callers. - "mm/sparse: remove SECTION_MARKED_PRESENT and further cleanups" (David Hildenbrand): Remove SECTION_MARKED_PRESENT in favor of the early-section flag. Simplify sparse memory initialization, section metadata handling and related PFN validity checks. - "sh: remove NUMA and SPARSEMEM support" (Mike Rapoport): Remove SuperH NUMA and SPARSEMEM support. The extra memory banks have been unusable since the NO_BOOTMEM conversion, leaving only the code and data overhead. - "mm: Unify device DAX and HugeTLB vmemmap population paths" (Muchun Song): Unify the generic device DAX and HugeTLB vmemmap population paths and shared tail-page handling. Remove the duplicate DAX machinery while retaining the powerpc radix implementation. - "kselftest: mm: fix some failure of split_huge_page_test" (Yeoreum Yun): Fix huge-page split tests racing with khugepaged recollapse. Use pagemap and page flags instead of VMA-boundary assumptions which fail when glibc has already enabled THP. - "memcg: move memcgid refcount to objcg to unpin dying memcgs" (Bingfang Guo): Let dying memcgs be freed while swapped-out shmem still holds their IDs. Move ID references to reparentable objcgs, with the necessary swap accounting and RCU lifetime changes. - "mm/truncate: fix data loss when truncating straddling large folios" (Zhang Yi): Preserve out-of-range data when truncating straddling large folios. Fix a lookup race and split-failure handling, and handle minimum folio orders for the forthcoming ext4 iomap buffered I/O path. - "mm/damon: introduce damos quota goal target metric complement flag" (SJ Park): Let DAMOS quota goals use a metric's complement, so utilization can also express free-memory goals without adding separate metrics. Add the sysfs interface, documentation and tests. - "arm64/mm: Standardize printing for pgtable entries" (Anshuman Khandual): Use the generic formatter for arm64 page-table entries, ready for future wider entries. Move the safe-PTE-update check out of the header to avoid an include cycle. - "mm: kmsan: fix iounmap metadata teardown" (Dima Koziuk): Fix KMSAN metadata leaks on iounmap and failed ioremap allocations. Free backing pages before removing their mappings, and share the teardown with partial-allocation cleanup. - "mm/damon/core: preserve quota state when constructing schemes" (Karl Mehltretter): Preserve running DAMOS quota state while validating parameter updates. Even rejected updates could reset accounting and exceed the quota window; add tests for both accepted and rejected updates. - "mm/vmalloc: fix vmalloc_dump_obj VA lookup" (Ye Liu): Fix vmalloc_dump_obj() lookups for last-page addresses and allocations spanning vmap zones. These allocations were being missed in diagnostic output. - "mm: various (urgent?) fixes" (David Hildenbrand): Fix mmap charge leaks and hugetlb use-after-free, wrong-address unmapping, stuck locks and endless faults. Also preserve reservations on failed mremap and handle stale userfaultfd bits. - "maple_tree: fix maple_range_64 crashes in RCU mode" (Dimitris Charisis): Fix pointer and metadata confusion during RCU destruction of maple_range_64 nodes, avoiding double frees and invalid accesses. Add a regression test; no in-tree user currently uses this combination. - "mm: fix hugetlb NR_HUGETLB accounting on folio migration" (Hongfu Li): Fix hugetlb migration and preallocation accounting so /proc/vmstat retains the correct count and memory.numa_stat follows the folio to its new node. - "mm/damon: fix a minor bug, clean code, and add a test" (SJ Park): Fix 32-bit DAMON age overflow which made old regions look young. Share hugetlb folio acquisition code and add a regression test for the previously fixed last-region skipping bug. - "mm/damon/core: cleanup code, reduce stack usage, and add kunit" (SJ Park): Reduce kdamond stack usage and remove unused enums. Add deterministic PSI quota-goal tests which do not depend on the machine's current memory pressure. - "mm/damon: fix the temporal goal tuner's size quota conversion" (Donggeun Yoo): Bound the temporal tuner's quota conversion to prevent overflow and zero effective quotas, which could stop schemes making progress. Add boundary tests. - "Don't use GFP_DMA when calling dma_alloc_coherent" (Baoquan He): Remove redundant GFP_DMA flags from coherent DMA allocation calls. The DMA API already selects the zone from device limits and ignores the caller's flag. - "kselftest: mm: fix intermittent failure khugepaged test" (Yeoreum Yun): Propagate child-process failures in the khugepaged tests and prevent background collapse from racing their checks. This removes false passes and intermittent failures. - "MAINTAINERS: cover all hugetlb headers under HUGETLB SUBSYSTEM" (Enze Li): Cover all hugetlb headers in MAINTAINERS so get_maintainer.pl finds the right maintainers. Also label the closing hugetlb_cgroup.h include guard. Summary of the 65 singletons in this merge: The singletons include a few worthwhile performance fixes. Avoiding unnecessary reverse-map tree updates gave a reported 15.9% improvement in UnixBench's execl test on a 192-core x86 system. A reclaim retry fix stops defrag_mode from spinning under memory.low protection; a reported file-creation stress test ran 5.7 times faster, with far less memory pressure. Narrower hugetlb invalidations also spare KVM guests needless refaults: the reported Redis-in-VM P99 QPS penalty while punching holes fell from 7.09% to 1.45%. Several fixes prevent lost data or corrupted memory. Lazyfree huge-page races with mremap()/munmap() could lose data or access freed memory, and MADV_COLD could lose a concurrent write's dirty bit. Another fix prevents stale migration entries from outliving large folios. On filesystems with blocks smaller than a page, extending a file by 4 GiB or more could expose bytes written past the old EOF through mmap instead of zeroes. That is fixed, along with use-after-free races in PAGEMAP_SCAN during process exit and in memory-cgroup accounting on PREEMPT_RT kernels. Other fixes stop UFFDIO_MOVE spinning forever on pinned large folios, which could wedge other memory operations, and stop mremap() leaking commit charges until allocations fail under strict overcommit. A further fix keeps userfaultfd tracking intact on neighboring mappings. NUMA binding no longer prevents long-term pins when the chosen node has only movable memory, fixing QEMU/VFIO startup and io_uring buffer registration failures. MGLRU also gets a fix for early-boot crashes with memory cgroups disabled at boot, notably in small crash kernels. * tag 'mm-stable-2026-10-25-19-27' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm: (213 commits) mm: multi-gen LRU: fix NULL lruvec->pgdat deref with memcg disabled on cmdline mm/page_counter: use WRITE_ONCE() for emin/elow when parent is the root mm/memcontrol: publish null pointer before dropping css reference test_maple_tree: test maple_range_64 node in RCU mode maple_tree: fix maple_range_64 crashes in RCU mode mm/vma: avoid broken uffd merge on mremap tools/testing/shared: catch a failed posix_memalign() mm/damon/core: remove unreachable damos charge_{target,addr}_from mm/shrinker: allocate shrinker_info_unit from a dedicated kmem_cache riscv: mm: exclude invalid THP PMDs from page table check mm/damon/core: filter out damos address filter-split failed region fs/proc/task_mmu: pin mm_users in do_pagemap_scan() mm/mempolicy: apply bind policies against the scoped allocation zone mm/vmscan: reclaim every zone in per-node proactive reclaim mm/mremap: correctly uncharge accountable VMAs in error path mm/mremap: populate calculated fields in vrm state correctly MAINTAINERS: add an entry for MEMORY MANAGEMENT - MEMORY MAP mm: bdi: reset min_ratio after the sysfs attributes are gone mm/page_vma_mapped: continue past nonmatching huge PMDs selftests/mm: skip hugetlb cgroup v2 tests without the needed controllers ...
8 daysfbcon: Implement struct consw.con_unblankThomas Zimmermann
Implement con_unblank from struct consw with the !blank branches from fbcon_blank(). The new function is called fbcon_unblank(). Remove the duplicated code from fbcon_blank(). Fbcon tracks fbdev blank state in par->blank_state using fbdev's FB_BLANK constants. In fbcon_unblank() the stored value is always FB_BLANK_UNBLANK. In fbcon_blank(), the new blank state is 1 + plus the VESA blank mode given in the parameter blank. fbcon_blank() now disables the cursor worker unconditionally. 9 daysfbdev: defio: assert FBINFO_VIRTFB, drop VM_IO, add VM_MIXEDMAPLorenzo Stoakes (ARM)
Currently all drivers which use defio allocate system memory. All of them also set FBINFO_VIRTFB, other than ssd1307fb, however this driver allocates system RAM, so simply failed to set this flag when it ought to. This patch sets FBINFO_VIRTFB on ssd1307fb probe, then drops setting VM_IO in fb_deferred_io_mmap() and instead requires FBINFO_VIRTFB to be set, erroring out with a kernel warning if not. The logic requires a page from the driver and since commit 1ecbc7dd2902 ("fbdev/deferred-io: Always call get_page() for framebuffer pages") has always required it to be refcounted, so this was implicitly already the case. Finally this patch sets VM_MIXEDMAP, as the logic is mapping kernel-allocated memory so this is appropriate. 12 daysfbcon: Retry rotated font allocation after failureYao Yiqi
fbcon_rotate_font() records the font, its geometry and the rotation in par->rotated before calling font_data_rotate(). If the allocation fails, the error path clears par->rotated.buf, but the recorded key already looks up to date, so the next call takes the early-out and never retries. The rotated putcs/cursor ops keep returning early on the NULL buffer, and the console stays blank even after memory is available again. Also test par->rotated.buf in the early-out, so a failed allocation is retried on the next call: at the next fbcon_switch(), fbcon_modechanged() or font change. Fixes: e4ef723d8975 ("fbcon: Avoid OOB font access if console rotation fails") Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Yao Yiqi <yaoyiqi3@huawei.com> Acked-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>
12 daysfbcon: Rebuild rotated font buffer on font changeYao Yiqi
fbcon_rotate_font() caches a rotated copy of the console font in par->rotated.buf. The buffer is sized from the font's width, height and charcount, and is rebuilt in fbcon_init(), fbcon_switch() and fbcon_modechanged(), but not in fbcon_do_set_font(). When the font is changed through KDFONTOP, the new geometry is installed and vc_resize() redraws before the buffer is rebuilt. The rotated putcs/cursor ops then index the old buffer with the new cell size; KASAN reports a slab-out-of-bounds read in soft_cursor(). Rebuild the buffer for the visible console before the redraw, as the other callers do: select the console's blitting state with set_blitting_type() (which also uploads the new font's map on tile-blitting hardware), then rebuild. Background consoles keep their rebuild at fbcon_switch() time, as the buffer is shared per framebuffer and must not be updated for a console that is not being displayed. To ensure a correct rollback when the rebuild or the following vc_resize() fails, save the rotated font state, clear it before rebuilding, and restore it in the error path of fbcon_do_set_font(). 12 daysfbcon: Include font geometry in the rotated font cacheYao Yiqi
fbcon_rotate_font() caches a rotated copy of the console font and skips the rebuild when the fontdata pointer and the rotation match. Raw font data carries no geometry, though: width, height and charcount live in vc->vc_font. fbcon_set_font() deduplicates uploads by byte equality, so the same bytes re-uploaded with different dimensions keep the fontdata pointer while the geometry changes, and the early-out skips the rebuild. The rotated cell size depends on the geometry (rotation swaps width and height), so the stale buffer is indexed with the new cell size. Re-uploading a 4x16 font as 16x8 on a CW-rotated console, for example, doubles the rotated cell size and reads past the end of the old buffer. Record the geometry the buffer was built from and compare it in the early-out. The pointer-only key used to be backed by an explicit width check in the deduplication, which commit 1e3c49aa03fb ("lib/fonts: Compare font data for equality with font_data_is_equal()") dropped. 12 daysfbdev: bitblit: Fix glyph clipping when fbcon pansTingjie Zhong
Commit 3637d34b35b2 ("fbdev: Add bounds checking in bit_putcs to fix vmalloc-out-of-bounds") made bit_putcs() clip glyphs to var.yres. When fbcon scrolls by panning, it draws text rows up to var.yres_virtual, so after the first pan most new text is not drawn until the next full redraw. This affects fbdev drivers that set FBINFO_HWACCEL_YPAN or FBINFO_HWACCEL_YWRAP, such as vesafb with the ypan option, when CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_LEGACY_ACCELERATION=y. Clip to GETVYRES() instead, which fbcon_ud.c and fbcon_ccw.c already use as the drawing area height. When fbcon does not pan, GETVYRES() returns var.yres, keeping the existing bound. When fbcon pans, it returns var.yres_virtual, which the framebuffer memory must cover anyway for panning to work. 14 daysfbcon: Replace fbcon_fill_cursor_mask() with fbcon_cursor_glyph()Thomas Zimmermann
The kernel's font library provides font_glyph_cursor() to create cursor glyphs. Replace fbcon's fbcon_fill_cursor_mask() with a new helper that uses font_glyph_cursor(). The cursor shapes remain mostly unchanged. The only exception is in underline cursors for fonts with a size larger than 10. The underlining dash is now one pixel closer to the font-glyph data, so that the cursor looks less detached. This follows the style used by vgacon. 2026-10-13fbdev: core: Initialize modelist in framebuffer_alloc()Andrey Misiurov
framebuffer_alloc() returns zeroed memory, so info->modelist starts out with NULL next and prev pointers. The list head is initialized only later, by fb_videomode_to_modelist() or by do_register_framebuffer(). The "fix potential memory leak" commits listed below added fb_destroy_modelist(&info->modelist) to the probe error paths of s3fb, tdfxfb, tridentfb, i740fb and carminefb. These paths can run before the list head is initialized: - s3fb, tdfxfb, tridentfb and i740fb call fb_videomode_to_modelist() only after a successful EDID read, and tridentfb can also hit the error path on an ioremap() or kmalloc() failure before that; - carminefb jumps to the error path when fb_find_mode() fails, before its fb_videomode_to_modelist() call. fb_destroy_modelist() then dereferences the NULL head. Reproduced on Debian 12 (6.1.180) by binding s3fb to a VGA device without EDID and forcing fb_alloc_cmap() to fail: s3fb 0000:00:03.0: cannot allocate colormap BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000000 RIP: 0010:fb_destroy_modelist+0x10/0x80 Call Trace: s3_pci_probe.cold+0x12b/0x2bf [s3fb] local_pci_probe+0x41/0x80 pci_device_probe+0xc3/0x240 really_probe+0xde/0x380 __driver_probe_device+0x84/0x150 driver_probe_device+0x1f/0x90 __driver_attach+0xce/0x1c0 bus_for_each_dev+0x87/0xd0 bus_add_driver+0x1ae/0x200 driver_register+0x89/0xe0 do_one_initcall+0x59/0x220 do_init_module+0x4a/0x1f0 Initialize the list head in framebuffer_alloc(), so info->modelist is always a valid, possibly empty, list and fb_destroy_modelist() is safe on every error path. 2026-09-11drm: Implement struct vga_switcheroo_client_ops.pre_switchThomas Zimmermann
Call drm_client_dev_acquire_outputs() from vga_switcheroo's pre_switch callback. Pushes fbcon updates from vga_switcheroo into DRM's fbdev emulation. This affects amdgpu, i915, nouveau and radeon. No other drivers implement vga_switcheroo. Also remove the calls to vga_switcheroo_client_fb_set() from fbcon. It is called from the DRM client's hotplug and sets the fbcon's framebuffer at vga_switcheroo. Running pre_switch and hotplug concurrently could result in a deadlock between clientlist_mutex and vgasr_mutex. Hence clean up fbcon here as well. By accepting a locked pointer and signaling retry status when lock release occurs, it enables page fault resolution in userfaultfd regions while preserving backward compatibility for existing callers. - "mm: make VMA page offset handling more consistent" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Clean up and standardize how vma->vm_pgoff is accessed and manipulated across file-backed and anonymous mappings in the kernel It introduces dedicated helper functions such as vma_start_pgoff(), vma_end_pgoff(), vma_set_pgoff() and linear_page_delta() while renaming rmap interval tree helpers to better reflect their functionality. These changes establish a cleaner foundation for future work that will unify virtual page offset indexing for all anonymous and CoW'd folios. - "mm: handle device-private PMDs in walk callbacks" (Usama Arif) Address kernel panics and state corruption caused by MM walk callbacks reaching non-present device-private PMD swap entries created during HMM migrations It ensures that functions which acquire pmd_trans_huge_lock() properly recognize device-private PMDs instead of assuming a present THP or a standard migration entry. - "mm/rmap: Refactor try_to_unmap_one" (Dev Jain) Refactor try_to_unmap_one by modularizing Hugetlb, anonymous-lazyfree, and anonymous-swapbacked logic into dedicated functions, laying the structural groundwork for batched anonymous large folio unmapping. - "Docs/ABI/damon: sysfs ABI document fixes and additions" (Song Hu) Fix typos and fills in missing entries in the DAMON sysfs ABI document - "dax/kmem: atomic whole-device hotplug via sysfs" (Gregory Price) Introduce an atomic sysfs state attribute and supporting DAX/MM infrastructure to prevent userland races when offlining and removing entire memory regions By adding an unplugged state alongside standard online modes, it enables whole-device atomic hotplug control while preserving backward compatibility. - "mm: convert more vm_flags_t users to vma_flags_t" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Continue transitioning the kernel from the deprecated vm_flags_t type to vma_flags_t across core memory management infrastructure. It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(), unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like mlock, mprotect, and mremap. - "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" (xu xin) Refactor mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify duplicate slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds code documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions. - "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields" (SJ Park) Clean up DAMON core structures by consistently marking internal-only fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper direct access from outer layers. It enforces encapsulation across core structures including damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct members. - "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL de-ref and races" (SJ Park) Address potential infinite loops, NULL dereferences, and race conditions identified in DAMON It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races. - "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on RT/UP" (Brendan Jackman) Fix an NMI safety flaw in __free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks via non-PCP or isolated migration paths. It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory hotplug or large allocation frees. - "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent cleanups" (Brendan Jackman) Clean up and update page allocator nomenclature, documentation, and debug assertions. It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete VM_BUG_ON() assertions in allocation paths. - "mm/mseal: further cleanups" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Refactor and simplify the mseal implementation by clarifying API boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity. It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO, eliminates mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only to current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no functional changes intended. - "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up per-node proactive reclaim" (Ridong Chen) Resolve reclaim behavior bugs and clean up function parameters across memory reclaim paths It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead of collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim(). - "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" (Kefeng Wang) Clean up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it removes the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP pages as non-resident. - "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants" (Kiryl Shutsemau) Two trivial cleanups in the folio split API - "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit exec expectation bugs" (SJ Park) Resolve minor operational and testing bugs in DAMON identified by Sashiko. It initializes the damos->last_applied field to prevent occasional efficiency degradation and fixes invalid memory accesses in DAMON KUnit tests during test failure handling. - "cleanup for stable_page_flags()" (Jinjiang Tu) Clean up and refactor stable_page_flags() used by /proc/kpageflags without altering functionality. It uses BIT_ULL() to prevent shift-overflow warnings on 64-bit flag bits, converts folio-specific flag checks to standard folio_test_*() helpers, and removes redundant CONFIG_PAGE_IDLE_FLAG handling. - "Batch unmap of uffd-wp file folios" (Dev Jain) Extend batched folio unmapping support to file folios within userfaultfd write-protect (uffd-wp) VMAs by adding batching capabilities to pte_install_uffd_wp_if_needed(). This removes special-case restrictions on uffd-wp VMAs in try_to_unmap_one(), significantly simplifying the function's control flow and complexity. - "mm/early_ioremap: clarify and clean up early_ioremap_reset()" (Sang-Heon Jeon) Clarify and clean up the architecture-specific usage of __late_set_fixmap() and __late_clear_fixmap() after early_ioremap_reset() It adds explicit documentation regarding when early_ioremap_reset() must be called and removes redundant macro definitions and reset calls in the RISC-V and ARM64 architectures. - "mm: fix reclaim storms in defrag_mode" (Johannes Weiner) Address severe performance regressions, swap storms, and spurious OOMs caused by vm.defrag_mode=1 under high memory pressure in Meta production It updates the page allocator slowpath so non-movable allocation requests actively trigger direct reclaim and direct compaction at pageblock_order scale, allowing them to claim whole pageblocks rather than spinning unproductively. - "zram: lockmap tweaks" (Sebastian Siewior) Optimize and fix lockdep tracking for zram devices by consolidating per-entry lockmaps and isolate lock classes across multiple instances This reduces memory overhead by replacing per-entry lockdep_map instances with a single map per struct zram, and assigns a dynamic lock_class_key to each instance to prevent false deadlock reports when different zram devices are backed by distinct filesystems. * tag 'mm-stable-2026-08-18-18-39' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm: (501 commits) selftests/mm: thuge-gen: fix test_shmget() for PAGE_SIZE check selftests/mm: unpoison pages in memory-failure teardown mm/shmem: downgrade final i_blocks check in shmem_evict_inode() to pr_warn() mm/khugepaged: replace mutex_lock/mutex_unlock usage with guard macro mm/zsmalloc: fix release order of locks in zs_page_migrate() Documentation: zram: remove sections numbering ksm: stop iterating VMAs when ksm_test_exit returns true mm: fold userfaultfd_rwp() to false without CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_PTE_PROTNONE mm/migrate: report RCU-tasks quiescent states in migrate_pages_batch() zram: use a custom key for each zram object zram: move lockmap to be per-zram instead per table selftests/mm: fix gup_longterm EINVAL error message mm: page_alloc: fix non-movable reclaim storm in defrag_mode mm: page_alloc: move capture_control to the page allocator mm: compaction: support non-movable compaction for pageblock requests mm: page_alloc: __GFP_FS lockdep annotation for direct compaction hugetlb: evaluate subpool free state while locked mm/damon: remove trailing semicolons after function definitions mm/damon/ops-common: prevent migration fallback to non-target nodes mm/damon: update outdated comment about DAMOS filter handling ...
2026-08-10fbdev: core: Clamp total_size to smem_len in read/write functionsMingyu Wang
Some legacy fbdev drivers may incorrectly set info->screen_size to a value larger than the actual mapped framebuffer size (info->fix.smem_len) during mode switches. This could allow out-of-bounds I/O and system memory accesses in fb_io_read(), fb_io_write(), fb_sys_read(), and fb_sys_write(). Prevent this by clamping total_size to smem_len when smem_len is non-zero. Virtual framebuffers (smem_len == 0) are unaffected. This is a hardening measure; no specific crash is fixed by this patch. 2026-08-08fbdev: bitblit: bound-check glyph index in bit_cursor()Rik van Riel
bit_cursor() fetches the glyph under the cursor with c = scr_readw(vc_pos); src = vc_font.data + ((c & charmask) * w * height); where charmask is 0x1ff when vc_hi_font_mask is set. The screen buffer value comes directly from scr_readw() and may be larger than the current font's glyph count. Syzkaller triggers this via vcs_write(). The Call Trace shows vcs_write() in vc_screen.c writing an arbitrary 16-bit value with writev() to /dev/vcsa, which vcs_write_buf() in vc_screen.c stores via vcs_scr_writew() without checking charcount. The stored value is later read in bit_cursor() in bitblit.c. When the font is changed from a font with 512 glyphs to a font with 256 glyphs, the screen buffer can retain characters with the high bit set from the previous mode, which could also produce the same out-of-bounds access. BUG: KASAN: global-out-of-bounds in soft_cursor+0x378/0x6bc drivers/video/fbdev/core/softcursor.c:70 Read of size 16 at addr ffff800086c57970 Call Trace: soft_cursor+0x378/0x6bc drivers/video/fbdev/core/softcursor.c:70 bit_cursor+0xa90/0x1108 drivers/video/fbdev/core/bitblit.c:365 fbcon_cursor+0x344/0x498 drivers/video/fbdev/core/fbcon.c:1427 hide_cursor+0xdc/0x2d0 drivers/tty/vt/vt.c:883 update_region+0x100/0x18c drivers/tty/vt/vt.c:669 vcs_write+0x8ec/0xaf0 drivers/tty/vt/vc_screen.c:685 bit_putcs_aligned() and bit_putcs_unaligned() already clamp the glyph index to vc_font.charcount. Apply the same clamp in bit_cursor() after extracting the attribute and masking, before indexing fontdata. The fix completes the bounds checking started in commit 18c4ef4e765a ("fbdev: bitblit: bound-check glyph index in bit_putcs*"), which missed the cursor path. This change should be safe because the clamp reuses the existing contract from fbcon: charcount is maintained under console_lock in con_font_set() and fbcon_font_set(), and hi_font_mask is cleared when switching from 512 to 256 glyphs. When stale screen data with high bits remains after a font switch, or when vcs_write() stores an arbitrary value, clamping the index to 0 prevents the out-of-bounds read without changing cursor semantics — the same fallback bit_putcs uses. In other words, the fontbuffer is allocated using the size calculated from the previous rotation 2, but before reallocating it with the new size, con_putcs is already using the new rotation 3: rotate_all_store fbcon_rotate_all fbcon_set_all_vcs fbcon_modechanged set_blitting_type ... par->bitops = &ccw_fbcon_bitops vc_resize ... clear_selection highlight ... do_update_region fbcon_putcs ... image.dy = vyres - ((xx + count) * vc->vc_font.width) [1] // overflow! ccw_putcs_aligned // old buf size is still being used during the read! src = par->rotated.buf + (scr_readw(s--) & charmask) * cellsize fb_pad_aligned_buffer----[src KASAN!!!] [2] info->fbops->fb_imageblit(info, image) sys_imageblit fb_imageblit fb_address_forward // offset: image->dy * bits_per_line + image->dx * bpp unsigned int bits = (unsigned int)adr->bits + offset adr->address += (bits & ~(BITS_PER_LONG - 1u)) / BITS_PER_BYTE [3] fb_bitmap_imageblit ... fb_read_offset // page fault! This fix is necessary, but it is not sufficient on its own. In [1] it causes an image.dy overflow (ccw_putcs: vyres = 768, image.dy = 4294967040), because vc_cols has not been updated in time at this point (it is likewise only updated after clear_selection()). This allows (xx + count) * width to exceed vyres, causing image.dy to overflow. Subsequently, address in [3] is incremented by an even larger amount, which triggers a page fault at [4]. Therefore, a second fix is required in combination with the first: move clear_selection() earlier, before set_blitting_type() in fbcon_set_all_vcs(), to prevent the out-of-bounds access. fbcon_rotate() has a similar problem, so add the same clear there. Since vc_is_sel() is not exported, the fbdev side is currently forced to call clear_selection() unconditionally, causing the global selection to be cleared prematurely. And this will not cause any other significant impact. Signed-off-by: Zizhi Wo <wozizhi@huawei.com> Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>
2026-08-08fbdev: core: Fix pointer desynchronization in fb_io_read()Mingyu Wang
In fb_io_read(), if copy_to_user() performs a partial copy (e.g., due to a faulty user buffer), the loop adjusts the chunk size 'c' and updates the remaining 'count'. However, the hardware 'src' pointer has already been eagerly advanced by the original chunk size. If the loop is allowed to continue, the read will resume from an incorrect, over-advanced offset. Since the remaining 'count' was only decremented by the successful bytes, this desynchronization causes the next iterations to execute more hardware reads than originally bounded, eventually leading to out-of-bounds I/O reads. Fix this by breaking out of the loop immediately upon a partial copy_to_user(). A partial copy indicates a faulty user buffer, making subsequent read attempts futile. Breaking out ensures we return the number of successfully read bytes without risking out-of-bounds hardware accesses in subsequent mismatched iterations. 2026-08-08fbdev: serialize mode sysfs access with lock_fb_info()Melbin K Mathew
show_mode(), show_modes(), and store_mode() access fb_info->modelist and fb_info->mode without holding lock_fb_info(). store_modes() takes lock_fb_info() while replacing the modelist and freeing the old one. A concurrent reader or writer can load a pointer to an old modelist entry before store_modes() frees it, then dereference freed memory or store a stale freed pointer in fb_info->mode. Take lock_fb_info() in show_mode(), show_modes(), and store_mode() to serialize with store_modes(). In show_mode(), copy the mode to the stack and format after dropping the lock. In store_mode(), split activate() into a _locked variant to avoid double-locking, and hold the locks for the modelist walk, mode conversion, activation, and fb_info->mode assignment together. 2026-08-08fbdev: clear fb_info->mode before deleting a videomodeMelbin K Mathew
fb_set_var() can delete a mode from info->modelist when userspace passes FB_ACTIVATE_INV_MODE through FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO. The code checks that the mode being deleted is not the current info->var and that fbcon is not using it, but it does not check fb_info->mode. fb_info->mode may still point into the modelist entry being deleted. If the entry is freed, later mode sysfs reads through show_mode() can dereference a stale pointer. Clear fb_info->mode before calling fb_delete_videomode() when it matches the mode being removed. 2026-06-26fbdev: Fix fb_new_modelist to prevent null-ptr-deref in fb_videomode_to_varIan Bridges
info->var, a framebuffer's current mode, is expected to have a matching entry in info->modelist. var_to_display() relies on this and treats a failed fb_match_mode() as "This should not happen". fb_set_var() keeps it true by adding the mode to the list on every change, and do_register_framebuffer() does the same at registration. store_modes() replaces the modelist from userspace. fb_new_modelist() validates the new modes but does not check that info->var still has a match. It relies on fbcon_new_modelist() to re-point consoles, but that only handles consoles mapped to the framebuffer. With fbcon unbound there are none, so info->var is left describing a mode that is no longer in the list. A later console takeover runs var_to_display(), where fb_match_mode() returns NULL and leaves fb_display[i].mode NULL. fbcon_switch() passes it to display_to_var(), and fb_videomode_to_var() dereferences the NULL mode. Keep the current mode in the list in fb_new_modelist(), the same way fb_set_var() does. 2026-06-26fbcon: fix NULL pointer dereference for a console without vc_dataIan Bridges
fbcon_new_modelist() runs when a framebuffer's modelist changes. For each console mapped to it with fb_display[i].mode set, it reads vc_cons[i].d and passes the vc_num to fbcon_set_disp(). This assumes a console with a mode set has a vc_data, but it can be NULL. fbcon_set_disp() sets fb_display[i].mode before it checks vc_data, and fbcon_deinit() leaves the mode set after the vc_data is freed. fbcon_new_modelist() then dereferences the NULL vc_data. Keep fb_display[i].mode set only while the console has a vc_data. Check vc_data before setting the mode in fbcon_set_disp(), and clear the mode in fbcon_deinit(). The existing mode check in fbcon_new_modelist() then skips such consoles. 2026-06-26fbdev: fix use-after-free in store_modes()Ian Bridges
store_modes() replaces a framebuffer's modelist with modes from userspace. On success it frees the old modelist with fb_destroy_modelist(). Two fields still point into that freed list. One pointer is fb_display[i].mode, the mode a console is using. fbcon_new_modelist() moves these pointers to the new list. It only does so for consoles still mapped to the framebuffer. An unmapped console is skipped and keeps its stale pointer. Unbinding fbcon, for example, sets con2fb_map[i] to -1 but leaves fb_display[i].mode set. An FBIOPUT_VSCREENINFO ioctl with FB_ACTIVATE_INV_MODE later reaches fbcon_mode_deleted(). That function reads the stale fb_display[i].mode through fb_mode_is_equal(). The read is a use-after-free. The other pointer is fb_info->mode, the current mode. It is set through the mode sysfs attribute. store_modes() does not update fb_info->mode, so it is left pointing into the freed list. show_mode(), the attribute's read handler, dereferences the stale fb_info->mode through mode_string(). The read is a use-after-free. Clear both pointers before freeing the list. Commit a1f305893074 ("fbcon: Set fb_display[i]->mode to NULL when the mode is released") added the helper fbcon_delete_modelist(). It clears every fb_display[i].mode that points into a given list. So far it is called only from the unregister path. Call it from store_modes() too, and set fb_info->mode to NULL. 2026-06-25fbdev: fbcon: fix out-of-bounds read in err_out of fbcon_do_set_font()Mingyu Wang
When fbcon_do_set_font() fails (e.g., due to a memory allocation failure inside vc_resize() under heavy memory pressure), it jumps to the `err_out` label to roll back the console state. However, the current rollback logic forgets to restore the `hi_font` state, leading to a severe state machine corruption. Earlier in the function, `set_vc_hi_font()` might be called to change `vc->vc_hi_font_mask` and mutate the screen buffer. If `vc_resize()` subsequently fails, the `err_out` path restores `vc_font.charcount` but entirely skips rolling back the `vc_hi_font_mask` and the screen buffer. This mismatch leaves the terminal in a desynchronized state. Because `vc_hi_font_mask` remains set, the VT subsystem will still accept character indices greater than 255 from userspace and write them to the screen buffer. Subsequent rendering calls (e.g., `fbcon_putcs()`) will then use these inflated indices to access the reverted, 256-character font array, leading to a deterministic out-of-bounds read and potential kernel memory disclosure. Fix this by adding the missing rollback logic for the `hi_font` mask and screen buffer in the error path. 2026-06-12fbdev: modedb: Fix misaligned fields in the 1920x1080-60 modeSteffen Persvold
The 1920x1080@60 modedb entry has one too many initializers before its sync field: a stray "0" occupies the sync slot, which shifts the remaining values by one field. The entry therefore decodes as sync = 0, vmode = FB_SYNC_HOR_HIGH_ACT | FB_SYNC_VERT_HIGH_ACT (0x3, i.e. FB_VMODE_INTERLACED | FB_VMODE_DOUBLE), and flag = FB_VMODE_NONINTERLACED, instead of the intended sync = positive H/V, vmode = non-interlaced. fb_find_mode() then returns a 1920x1080 mode flagged as interlaced + doublescan with active-low syncs. Drivers that honour var->vmode and var->sync when programming display timing enable doublescan and the wrong sync polarity, corrupting the output. Drop the stray initializer so sync and vmode hold their intended values (positive H/V sync, non-interlaced), matching the adjacent 1920x1200 entry. Then use the internal rotation helpers on the cleared output. Fbcon's original implementation worked like this, but lost it during refactoring. 2026-04-07lib/fonts: Implement glyph rotationThomas Zimmermann
Move the glyph rotation helpers from fbcon to the font library. Wrap them behind clean interfaces. Also clear the output memory to zero. Previously, the implementation relied on the caller to do that. Go through the fbcon code and callers of the glyph-rotation helpers. In addition to the font rotation, there's also the cursor code, which uses the rotation helpers. The font-rotation relied on a single memset to zero for the whole font. This is now multiple memsets on each glyph. This will be sorted out when the font library also implements font rotation. Building glyph rotation in the font library still depends on CONFIG_FRAMEBUFFER_CONSOLE_ROTATION=y. If we get more users of the code, we can still add a dedicated Kconfig symbol to the font library. No changes have been made to the actual implementation of the rotate_*() and pattern_*() functions. 2026-03-09lib/fonts: Store font data for user space with font_data_export()Thomas Zimmermann
Add font_data_export() and update consoles to use it. The helper font_data_export() is based on code in fbcon_get_font(). It extends the size of a single glyph to match the requested vpitch, which us usually 32 bytes for fonts from user space. Internal fonts have a pitch according to the glyph's height. The implementation of font_data_export() differs in several ways from the original code. The original implementation distinguished between different pitches of the font data. This is not necessary as the pitch is a parameter in the copying. There was also special handling for a font pitch of 3 bytes, which got expanded to 4 bytes (with trailing bits on each scanline). The logic originated from long before git history exists even in the historical tree. So it is not clear why this was implemented. It is not what user space expects. The setfont utitlity loads font with 3-bytes pitches and expects to read such fonts with a 3-byte pitch. For any font width, the font pitch is always the width extended to the next multiple of 8. See [1] for the user-space font-reading code. With the changes to handling the font pitches, font_data_export() replaces the original code's various special cases with a single copying logic. v3: - fix typos (Helge) Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Link: https://github.com/legionus/kbd/blob/v2.9.0/src/libkfont/kdfontop.c#L73 # [1] Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>
2026-03-09lib/fonts: Create font_data_t from struct console_font with font_data_import()Thomas Zimmermann
Add font_data_import() and update consoles to use it. The implementation of font_data_import() is based on code from fbcon, which supports overflow checks and crc32 checksums. Fbcon uses the crc32 checksum. Newport_con now implements the same overflow checks as fbcon. As before, this console does not support checksums, which are optional. Newport_con can now also handle input font data with a vertical pitch other than 32 bytes. (The vertical pitch is the offset between two glyphs in the font data.) As an internal change, remove the const qualifier from the data field if struct font_data. This allows font_data_import() to write the data without type casting. For all users of the font data via font_data_t, the stored data is still read only. v3: - fix typos Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>
2026-03-09lib/fonts: Compare font data for equality with font_data_is_equal()Thomas Zimmermann
Add font_data_is_equal() and update consoles to use it. Font data is equal if it has the same size and contains the same values on all bytes. Only fbcon uses a crc32 checksum. If set in both operands the checksums have to be equal. The new helper also guarantees to not compare internal fonts against fonts from user space. Internal fonts cannot be ref-counted, so making them equal to user-space fonts with the same byte sequence results in undefined behavior. The test only compares data buffers. Their interpretation is up each console. Therefore remove a width test in fbcon_set_font(). v3: - rebase onto font_data_{get,put}() Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>
2026-03-09lib/fonts: Manage font-data lifetime with font_data_get/_put()Thomas Zimmermann
Add font_data_get() and font_data_put(). Update consoles to use them over REFCOUNT() and plain kfree(). Newly allocated font data starts with a reference count of 1. Loading the font puts the previously loaded font. If the reference count reaches zero, font_data_put() frees the font data. The kernel stores a refcount of zero for internal font data. Invoking font_data_get() and font_data_put() tests this internally and returns success without further operation. From the caller's perspective, getting and putting works the same for all font data. Fbcon used the userfont flag distinguish between internal fonts and fonts loaded by user space. Only the latter where refcounted. With the new helper's automatic handling of internal font data, remove the userfont flag from fbcon. Newport_con uses a default font, FONT_DATA, until user space loads custom font data. Remove all special cases for FONT_DATA, as the get and put calls' read-only handling also covers this case. v3: - fix module linker error wrt font symbols (Nathan, Arnd) - fix typos Signed-off-by: Thomas Zimmermann <tzimmermann@suse.de> Signed-off-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de>
