2026-09-29RDMA/nldev: Fix NULL deref in dumps of objects abandoned by DRIVER_FAILUREYili Zhang
fill_res_cq_entry() dereferences cq->uobject->uevent.uobject.context->res.id unconditionally for user resources. This is normally safe by ordering: destroy_hw() removes the resource from the restrack before uverbs_destroy_uobject() clears ->context, and the XA_ZERO_ENTRY marker set by rdma_restrack_begin_del() hides the entry from concurrent netlink dumps. The ordering breaks when a driver keeps failing to destroy an object during ucontext teardown. uverbs_destroy_ufile_hw() then falls back to __uverbs_cleanup_ufile(RDMA_REMOVE_DRIVER_FAILURE), which abandons the object in place: the HW object and its restrack entry are intentionally leaked, while the uobject bookkeeping is torn down and ->context is explicitly set to NULL by uverbs_destroy_uobject(). rdma_restrack_del() is never reached, so the orphaned entry stays in the device restrack with a valid kref, reachable by any subsequent netlink dump. Observed on 6.1.52 with MLNX_OFED 24.10, after an mlx5 FW failure left a process unable to tear down its CQ (destroy_cq FW command failing during FD close): WARNING: ... uverbs_destroy_ufile_hw+0xe3/0x100 BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address: 0000000000000058 RIP: 0010:fill_res_cq_entry+0x15e/0x180 [ib_core] res_get_common_dumpit+0x304/0x530 [ib_core] nldev_res_get_cq_dumpit+0x1a/0x20 [ib_core] The faulting chain maps to the source (CR2 = 0x58): cq->uobject (struct ib_cq +0x08, res at +0x98) uobject->context (struct ib_uobject +0x10, NULL after abandon) context->res.id (struct ib_ucontext +0x58) The recent restrack rework (8d186210677c and its series) moved the restrack deletion to the start of the destroy flow and thus fences concurrent dumps from an object being destroyed, but it does not cover this case: when destroy fails, rdma_restrack_abort_del() restores the entry, and the RDMA_REMOVE_DRIVER_FAILURE sweep still never removes it from the restrack. From the fallback until the device is unregistered, any "rdma res show cq" deterministically takes the NULL pointer dereference; this is a long-lived state, NOT A RACE. The dump path holds neither the restrack lock (dropped before the fill callback runs) nor ufile->hw_destroy_rwsem, and rdma_restrack_get() only guarantees that the res memory stays alive, not that ->context is still valid. Fix the dump side: check the uobject context directly instead of the rdma_is_kernel_res() marker. A non-NULL uobject already implies a user resource, so kernel resources keep being skipped, and the additional ->context check skips the RES_CTXN attribute for orphaned entries instead of crashing the dump. The orphaned resource itself remains visible in "rdma res show" (cqn/cqe/usecnt/pid), which is what an operator needs after the accompanying uverbs WARN to diagnose the driver destroy failure. fill_res_pd_entry() has the same pattern (pd->uobject->context->res.id) and is fixed the same way; a PD can even reach the fallback without its own driver callback failing, e.g. uverbs_free_pd() returns -EBUSY while another object that failed to destroy still holds the PD usecnt. 2026-09-06RDMA/nldev: Put the device when dellink failsLi RongQing
nldev_dellink() takes a device reference through ib_device_get_by_index() and normally hands it over to ib_unregister_device_and_put(). The error path of the ->dellink callback returns without releasing it, so the reference is leaked. Once that happens, any later unregistration of the device blocks forever, because disable_device() drops its own reference and then waits for the refcount to drain. No in-tree driver returns an error from ->dellink today, so the leak is currently latent. Put the device before returning the error. 2026-09-04treewide: refresh kmalloc_obj() conversionsKees Cook
This is another run of the Coccinelle script for converting kmalloc() family of allocations to kmalloc_obj() via the existing rules in scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci This catches both the set of kmalloc() uses added since the first kmalloc_obj() conversions in v7.0 and adds a large group missed in the first pass due to Coccinelle not interacting well with the cleanup.h scoped_...() family of macros[1]. I worked around this with spatch's "--macro-file" argument to a file with all the scoped_...() macros mapped to Coccinelle's YACFE_ITERATOR[2] as that was the closest viable control flow indicator I could find. Build tested allmodconfig on x86, arm64, arm, loongarch, mips, powerpc, riscv, and s390 with no new warnings. 2026-07-12RDMA: Change capability fields in ib_device_attr from int to u32Erni Sri Satya Vennela
The capability counter fields in struct ib_device_attr are declared as signed int, but these values are inherently non-negative. Drivers maintain their cached caps as u32 and assign them directly into these int fields; if a cap exceeds INT_MAX the implicit narrowing yields a negative value visible to the IB core. Change the signed int capability fields to u32 to match the underlying nature of the data. Also update consumers across the IB core, ULPs, NVMe-oF target, RDS, and NFS/RDMA so the new u32 values are not forced back through signed int or u8 via min()/min_t() or narrowing local variables. The nvmet-rdma consumer of max_srq clamps it against ib_device.num_comp_vectors, which stays a signed int, so that site uses min_t() instead of min() to handle the signed/unsigned mismatch. Add RDMA_NLDEV_ATTR_RES_SUMMARY_ENTRY_MAX netlink attribute to expose device resource limits (max_qp, max_cq, max_mr, max_pd, max_srq) in the resource summary alongside the existing current count. This allows userspace tools like iproute2's rdma to display resource usage in curr/max format. Expected output from "rdma resource show": Before: 0: mlx5_0: qp 123 cq 45 mr 200 pd 10 After: 0: mlx5_0: qp 123/131072 cq 45/65536 mr 200/1000000 pd 10/32768 In JSON output, both "curr" and "max" fields will be provided so that scripts can compute percentages if needed. 2026-06-08RDMA/nldev: Fix locking when accessing mr->pdJason Gunthorpe
Sashiko points out that, due to rereg_mr, the PD is actually variable and all the touches in nldev are racy. Use mr->device instead of mr->pd->device. Getting the PD restrack ID is more tricky. To avoid disturbing all the happy paths, add an rdma_restrack_sync() operation which is sort of like flush_workqueue() or synchronize_irq(): after it returns, all the old nldev touches to the mr are gone and everything sees the new PD. This makes it safe to reach into the PD pointer. 2024-08-11RDMA/nldev: Enhance netlink message parsing and validationChiara Meiohas
Use strict parsing validation for set commands, and liberal validation for get commands. Additionally, remove all usage of nlmsg_parse_depricate(). Strict parsing validation fails when encountering unrecognized attributes in the Netlink message, while liberal parsing validation ignores them. In 57d7a8fd904c ("rdma: Add an option to display driver-specific QPs in the rdma tool") in iproute2, the attribute RDMA_NLDEV_ATTR_DRIVER_DETAILS was added. This cause backwards compatibility issues when using the rdma tool with the new attribute and an older kernel which does recognize this attribute. In this case, the command "rdma stat show mr" would fail, because the new rdma tool would fill the netlink message with the new attribute and the older kernel would fail as it used strict parsing and did not recognize the new attribute. In general, strict validation is appropriate for set commands as they modify the system, while liberal validation is suitable for get commands which only query system information. Replace all uses of nlmsg_parse_deprecated() with __nlmsg_parse(), using the NL_VALIDATE_LIBERAL flag. The nlmsg_parse_deprecated() function internally calls __nlmsg_parse() with the NL_VALIDATE_LIBERAL flag, but its name is confusing.
