2026-01-20treewide: provide a generic clear_user_page() variantDavid Hildenbrand
Patch series "mm: folio_zero_user: clear page ranges", v11. This series adds clearing of contiguous page ranges for hugepages. The series improves on the current discontiguous clearing approach in two ways: - clear pages in a contiguous fashion. - use batched clearing via clear_pages() wherever exposed. The first is useful because it allows us to make much better use of hardware prefetchers. The second, enables advertising the real extent to the processor. Where specific instructions support it (ex. string instructions on x86; "mops" on arm64 etc), a processor can optimize based on this because, instead of seeing a sequence of 8-byte stores, or a sequence of 4KB pages, it sees a larger unit being operated on. For instance, AMD Zen uarchs (for extents larger than LLC-size) switch to a mode where they start eliding cacheline allocation. This is helpful not just because it results in higher bandwidth, but also because now the cache is not evicting useful cachelines and replacing them with zeroes. Demand faulting a 64GB region shows performance improvement: $ perf bench mem mmap -p $pg-sz -f demand -s 64GB -l 5 baseline +series (GBps +- %stdev) (GBps +- %stdev) pg-sz=2MB 11.76 +- 1.10% 25.34 +- 1.18% [*] +115.47% preempt=* pg-sz=1GB 24.85 +- 2.41% 39.22 +- 2.32% + 57.82% preempt=none|voluntary pg-sz=1GB (similar) 52.73 +- 0.20% [#] +112.19% preempt=full|lazy [*] This improvement is because switching to sequential clearing allows the hardware prefetchers to do a much better job. [#] For pg-sz=1GB a large part of the improvement is because of the cacheline elision mentioned above. preempt=full|lazy improves upon that because, not needing explicit invocations of cond_resched() to ensure reasonable preemption latency, it can clear the full extent as a single unit. In comparison the maximum extent used for preempt=none|voluntary is PROCESS_PAGES_NON_PREEMPT_BATCH (32MB). When provided the full extent the processor forgoes allocating cachelines on this path almost entirely. (The hope is that eventually, in the fullness of time, the lazy preemption model will be able to do the same job that none or voluntary models are used for, allowing us to do away with cond_resched().) Raghavendra also tested previous version of the series on AMD Genoa and sees similar improvement [1] with preempt=lazy. $ perf bench mem map -p $page-size -f populate -s 64GB -l 10 base patched change pg-sz=2MB 12.731939 GB/sec 26.304263 GB/sec 106.6% pg-sz=1GB 26.232423 GB/sec 61.174836 GB/sec 133.2% This patch (of 8): Let's drop all variants that effectively map to clear_page() and provide it in a generic variant instead. We'll use the macro clear_user_page to indicate whether an architecture provides it's own variant. Also, clear_user_page() is only called from the generic variant of clear_user_highpage(), so define it only if the architecture does not provide a clear_user_highpage(). And, for simplicity define it in linux/highmem.h. Note that for parisc, clear_page() and clear_user_page() map to clear_page_asm(), so we can just get rid of the custom clear_user_page() implementation. There is a clear_user_page_asm() function on parisc, that seems to be unused. Not sure what's up with that. 2025-06-06xtensa: Replace __ASSEMBLY__ with __ASSEMBLER__ in non-uapi headersThomas Huth
While the GCC and Clang compilers already define __ASSEMBLER__ automatically when compiling assembly code, __ASSEMBLY__ is a macro that only gets defined by the Makefiles in the kernel. This can be very confusing when switching between userspace and kernelspace coding, or when dealing with uapi headers that rather should use __ASSEMBLER__ instead. So let's standardize on the __ASSEMBLER__ macro that is provided by the compilers now. This is a completely mechanical patch (done with a simple "sed -i" statement). git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next Pull networking updates from Paolo Abeni: "The most significant set of changes is the per netns RTNL. The new behavior is disabled by default, regression risk should be contained. Notably the new config knob PTP_1588_CLOCK_VMCLOCK will inherit its default value from PTP_1588_CLOCK_KVM, as the first is intended to be a more reliable replacement for the latter. Core: - Started a very large, in-progress, effort to make the RTNL lock scope per network-namespace, thus reducing the lock contention significantly in the containerized use-case, comprising: - RCU-ified some relevant slices of the FIB control path - introduce basic per netns locking helpers - namespacified the IPv4 address hash table - remove rtnl_register{,_module}() in favour of rtnl_register_many() - refactor rtnl_{new,del,set}link() moving as much validation as possible out of RTNL lock - convert all phonet doit() and dumpit() handlers to RCU - convert IPv4 addresses manipulation to per-netns RTNL - convert virtual interface creation to per-netns RTNL the per-netns lock infrastructure is guarded by the CONFIG_DEBUG_NET_SMALL_RTNL knob, disabled by default ad interim. - Introduce NAPI suspension, to efficiently switching between busy polling (NAPI processing suspended) and normal processing. - Migrate the IPv4 routing input, output and control path from direct ToS usage to DSCP macros. This is a work in progress to make ECN handling consistent and reliable. - Add drop reasons support to the IPv4 rotue input path, allowing better introspection in case of packets drop. - Make FIB seqnum lockless, dropping RTNL protection for read access. - Make inet{,v6} addresses hashing less predicable. - Allow providing timestamp OPT_ID via cmsg, to correlate TX packets and timestamps Things we sprinkled into general kernel code: - Add small file operations for debugfs, to reduce the struct ops size. - Refactoring and optimization for the implementation of page_frag API, This is a preparatory work to consolidate the page_frag implementation. Netfilter: - Optimize set element transactions to reduce memory consumption - Extended netlink error reporting for attribute parser failure. - Make legacy xtables configs user selectable, giving users the option to configure iptables without enabling any other config. - Address a lot of false-positive RCU issues, pointed by recent CI improvements. BPF: - Put xsk sockets on a struct diet and add various cleanups. Overall, this helps to bump performance by 12% for some workloads. - Extend BPF selftests to increase coverage of XDP features in combination with BPF cpumap. - Optimize and homogenize bpf_csum_diff helper for all archs and also add a batch of new BPF selftests for it. - Extend netkit with an option to delegate skb->{mark,priority} scrubbing to its BPF program. - Make the bpf_get_netns_cookie() helper available also to tc(x) BPF programs. Protocols: - Introduces 4-tuple hash for connected udp sockets, speeding-up significantly connected sockets lookup. - Add a fastpath for some TCP timers that usually expires after close, the socket lock contention. - Add inbound and outbound xfrm state caches to speed up state lookups. - Avoid sending MPTCP advertisements on stale subflows, reducing risks on loosing them. - Make neighbours table flushing more scalable, maintaining per device neigh lists. Driver API: - Introduce a unified interface to configure transmission H/W shaping, and expose it to user-space via generic-netlink. - Add support for per-NAPI config via netlink. This makes napi configuration persistent across queues removal and re-creation. Requires driver updates, currently supported drivers are: nVidia/Mellanox mlx4 and mlx5, Broadcom brcm and Intel ice. - Add ethtool support for writing SFP / PHY firmware blocks. - Track RSS context allocation from ethtool core. - Implement support for mirroring to DSA CPU port, via TC mirror offload. - Consolidate FDB updates notification, to avoid duplicates on device-specific entries. - Expose DPLL clock quality level to the user-space. - Support master-slave PHY config via device tree. Tests and tooling: - forwarding: introduce deferred commands, to simplify the cleanup phase Drivers: - Updated several drivers - Amazon vNic, Google vNic, Microsoft vNic, Intel e1000e and Broadcom Tigon3 - to use netdev-genl to link the IRQs and queues to NAPI IDs, allowing busy polling and better introspection. - Ethernet high-speed NICs: - nVidia/Mellanox: - mlx5: - a large refactor to implement support for cross E-Switch scheduling - refactor H/W conter management to let it scale better - H/W GRO cleanups - Intel (100G, ice):: - add support for ethtool reset - implement support for per TX queue H/W shaping - AMD/Solarflare: - implement per device queue stats support - Broadcom (bnxt): - improve wildcard l4proto on IPv4/IPv6 ntuple rules - Marvell Octeon: - Add representor support for each Resource Virtualization Unit (RVU) device. - Hisilicon: - add support for the BMC Gigabit Ethernet - IBM (EMAC): - driver cleanup and modernization - Cisco (VIC): - raise the queues number limit to 256 - Ethernet virtual: - Google vNIC: - implement page pool support - macsec: - inherit lower device's features and TSO limits when offloading - virtio_net: - enable premapped mode by default - support for XDP socket(AF_XDP) zerocopy TX - wireguard: - set the TSO max size to be GSO_MAX_SIZE, to aggregate larger packets. - Ethernet NICs embedded and virtual: - Broadcom ASP: - enable software timestamping - Freescale: - add enetc4 PF driver - MediaTek: Airoha SoC: - implement BQL support - RealTek r8169: - enable TSO by default on r8168/r8125 - implement extended ethtool stats - Renesas AVB: - enable TX checksum offload - Synopsys (stmmac): - support header splitting for vlan tagged packets - move common code for DWMAC4 and DWXGMAC into a separate FPE module. - add dwmac driver support for T-HEAD TH1520 SoC - Synopsys (xpcs): - driver refactor and cleanup - TI: - icssg_prueth: add VLAN offload support - Xilinx emaclite: - add clock support - Ethernet switches: - Microchip: - implement support for the lan969x Ethernet switch family - add LAN9646 switch support to KSZ DSA driver - Ethernet PHYs: - Marvel: 88q2x: enable auto negotiation - Microchip: add support for LAN865X Rev B1 and LAN867X Rev C1/C2 - PTP: - Add support for the Amazon virtual clock device - Add PtP driver for s390 clocks - WiFi: - mac80211 - EHT 1024 aggregation size for transmissions - new operation to indicate that a new interface is to be added - support radio separation of multi-band devices - move wireless extension spy implementation to libiw - Broadcom: - brcmfmac: optional LPO clock support - Microchip: - add support for Atmel WILC3000 - Qualcomm (ath12k): - firmware coredump collection support - add debugfs support for a multitude of statistics - Qualcomm (ath5k): - Arcadyan ARV45XX AR2417 & Gigaset SX76[23] AR241[34]A support - Realtek: - rtw88: 8821au and 8812au USB adapters support - rtw89: add thermal protection - rtw89: fine tune BT-coexsitence to improve user experience - rtw89: firmware secure boot for WiFi 6 chip - Bluetooth - add Qualcomm WCN785x support for ids Foxconn 0xe0fc/0xe0f3 and 0x13d3:0x3623 - add Realtek RTL8852BE support for id Foxconn 0xe123 - add MediaTek MT7920 support for wireless module ids - btintel_pcie: add handshake between driver and firmware - btintel_pcie: add recovery mechanism - btnxpuart: add GPIO support to power save feature" * tag 'net-next-6.13' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/netdev/net-next: (1475 commits) mm: page_frag: fix a compile error when kernel is not compiled Documentation: tipc: fix formatting issue in tipc.rst selftests: nic_performance: Add selftest for performance of NIC driver selftests: nic_link_layer: Add selftest case for speed and duplex states selftests: nic_link_layer: Add link layer selftest for NIC driver bnxt_en: Add FW trace coredump segments to the coredump bnxt_en: Add a new ethtool -W dump flag bnxt_en: Add 2 parameters to bnxt_fill_coredump_seg_hdr() bnxt_en: Add functions to copy host context memory bnxt_en: Do not free FW log context memory bnxt_en: Manage the FW trace context memory bnxt_en: Allocate backing store memory for FW trace logs bnxt_en: Add a 'force' parameter to bnxt_free_ctx_mem() bnxt_en: Refactor bnxt_free_ctx_mem() bnxt_en: Add mem_valid bit to struct bnxt_ctx_mem_type bnxt_en: Update firmware interface spec to 1.10.3.85 selftests/bpf: Add some tests with sockmap SK_PASS bpf: fix recursive lock when verdict program return SK_PASS wireguard: device: support big tcp GSO wireguard: selftests: load nf_conntrack if not present ...

2024-11-11xtensa: remove the get_order() implementationYunsheng Lin
As the get_order() implemented by xtensa supporting 'nsau' instruction seems be the same as the generic implementation in include/asm-generic/getorder.h when size is not a constant value as the generic implementation calling the fls*() is also utilizing the 'nsau' instruction for xtensa. So remove the get_order() implemented by xtensa, as using the generic implementation may enable the compiler to do the computing when size is a constant value instead of runtime computing and enable the using of get_order() in BUILD_BUG_ON() macro in next patch. 2024-10-28asm-generic: provide generic page_to_phys and phys_to_page implementationsChristoph Hellwig
page_to_phys is duplicated by all architectures, and from some strange reason placed in <asm/io.h> where it doesn't fit at all. phys_to_page is only provided by a few architectures despite having a lot of open coded users. 2019-11-26xtensa: add XIP kernel supportMax Filippov
XIP (eXecute In Place) kernel image is the image that can be run directly from ROM, using RAM only for writable data. XIP xtensa kernel differs from regular xtensa kernel in the following ways: - it has exception/IRQ vectors merged into text section. No vectors relocation takes place at kernel startup. - .data/.bss location must be specified in the kernel configuration, its content is copied there in the _startup function. - .init.text is merged with the rest of text and is executed from ROM. - when MMU is used the virtual address where the kernel will be mapped must be specified in the kernel configuration. It may be in the KSEG or in the KIO, __pa macro is adjusted to be able to handle both. Signed-off-by: Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com>

2017-03-30xtensa: make __pa work with uncached KSEG addressesMax Filippov
When __pa is applied to virtual address in uncached KSEG region the result is incorrect. Fix it by checking if the original address is in the uncached KSEG and adjusting the result. It looks better than masking off bits because pfn_valid would correctly work with new __pa results and it may be made working in noMMU case, once we get definition for uncached memory view. This is required for the dma_common_mmap and DMA debug code to work correctly: they both indirectly use __pa with coherent DMA addresses. In case of DMA debug the visible effect is false reports that an address mapped for DMA is accessed by CPU. 2016-07-24xtensa: minimize use of PLATFORM_DEFAULT_MEM_{ADDR,SIZE}Max Filippov
Now that the kernel load address and KSEG physical base address have their own Kconfig symbols PLATFORM_DEFAULT_MEM seems redundant. It makes little sense to use it in MMU configurations instead of KSEG_PADDR. In noMMU configurations there's no explicit KSEG, so it's still useful for the early cache initialization and definition of ARCH_PFN_OFFSET, which affects mem_map size. - limit it to noMMU; MMU variants have XCHAL_KSEG_PADDR and XCHAL_KSEG_SIZE; - don't use it to define TASK_SIZE or MAX_LOW_PFN: first doesn't make any difference in noMMU, second is meaningless as there's no high memory; - don't add default physical memory region: memory layout should come from the DT, bootloader tags, or memmap= command line parameter. 2016-07-24xtensa: cleanup MMU setup and kernel layout macrosMax Filippov
Make kernel load address explicit, independent of the selected MMU configuration and configurable from Kconfig. Do not restrict it to the first 512MB of the physical address space. Cleanup kernel memory layout macros: - rename VECBASE_RESET_VADDR to VECBASE_VADDR, XC_VADDR to VECTOR_VADDR; - drop VIRTUAL_MEMORY_ADDRESS and LOAD_MEMORY_ADDRESS; - introduce PHYS_OFFSET and use it in __va and __pa definitions; - synchronize MMU/noMMU vectors, drop unused NMI vector; - replace hardcoded vectors offset of 0x3000 with Kconfig symbol. 2016-07-24xtensa: add alternative kernel memory layoutsMax Filippov
MMUv3 is able to support low memory bigger than 128MB. Implement 256MB and 512MB KSEG layouts: - add Kconfig selector for KSEG layout; - add KSEG base address, size and alignment definitions to arch/xtensa/include/asm/kmem_layout.h; - use new definitions in TLB initialization; - add build time memory map consistency checks. See Documentation/xtensa/mmu.txt for the details of new memory layouts. Signed-off-by: Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com>
2016-07-24xtensa: move kernel mapping addresses into kmem_layout.hMax Filippov
Create a header dedicated to memory layout definitions. Include it from places where these definitions are needed. Express vmalloc area address, VIRTUAL_MEMORY_ADDRESS and KERNELOFFSET through KSEG address. Signed-off-by: Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com>
2014-10-21xtensa: nommu: clean up memory map dumpMax Filippov
noMMU configuration doesn't use special area for vmalloc allocations, don't print it in the memory map. PAGE_OFFSET is fixed to 0 in noMMU, use min_low_pfn and max_low_pfn for lowmem range display. Make all XCHAL_KSEG_* constants unsigned long for consistency with other addresses. Signed-off-by: Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com>
2014-10-21xtensa: nommu: don't build most of the cache flushing codeMax Filippov
Most cache flushing code is only relevant for MMU. Don't build it for nommu configuration. Signed-off-by: Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com>
2014-08-14xtensa: support aliasing cache in k[un]map_atomicMax Filippov
Map high memory pages at virtual addresses with color that match color of their physical address. Existing cache alias management mechanisms may be used with such pages. Signed-off-by: Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com>
2014-08-14xtensa: implement clear_user_highpage and copy_user_highpageMax Filippov
Existing clear_user_page and copy_user_page cannot be used with highmem because they calculate physical page address from its virtual address and do it incorrectly in case of high memory page mapped with kmap_atomic. Also kmap is not needed, as most likely userspace mapping color would be different from the kmapped color. Provide clear_user_highpage and copy_user_highpage functions that determine if temporary mapping is needed for the pages. Move most of the logic of the former clear_user_page and copy_user_page to xtensa/mm/cache.c only leaving temporary mapping setup, invalidation and clearing/copying in the xtensa/mm/misc.S. Rename these functions to clear_page_alias and copy_page_alias. Signed-off-by: Max Filippov <jcmvbkbc@gmail.com>
2012-12-18xtensa: clean up files to make them code-style compliantChris Zankel
Remove heading and trailing spaces, trim trailing lines, and wrap lines that are longer than 80 characters. Signed-off-by: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net>
2011-05-25xtensa/mm: remove WANT_PAGE_VIRTUALSebastian Andrzej Siewior
This is not useful: it provides page->virtual and is used with highmem. xtensa has no support for highmem and those HIGHMEM bits which are found by grep are partly implemented. The interesting functions like kmap() are missing. If someone actually implements the complete HIGHMEM support he could use HASHED_PAGE_VIRTUAL like most others do. 2009-06-11asm-generic: rename page.h and uaccess.hArnd Bergmann
The current asm-generic/page.h only contains the get_order function, and asm-generic/uaccess.h only implements unaligned accesses. This renames the file to getorder.h and uaccess-unaligned.h to make room for new page.h and uaccess.h file that will be usable by all simple (e.g. nommu) architectures. 2009-04-02xtensa: cope with ram beginning at higher addressesJohannes Weiner
The current assumption of the memory code is that the first RAM PFN in the system is 0. Adjust the relevant code to play well with setups where memory starts at higher addresses, indicated by PLATFORM_DEFAULT_MEM_START. The new memory model looks like this: +----------+--+----------------------+----------------+ | | | | | | | | RAM | | | | | | | +----------+--+----------------------+----------------+ | | | | | +- PFN 0 | +- min_low_pfn +- max_low_pfn +- max_pfn | +- ARCH_PFN_OFFSET +- PLATFORM_DEFAULT_MEM_START >> PAGE_SIZE The memory map contains pages starting from pfn ARCH_PFN_OFFSET up to max_low_pfn. The only zone used right now will span exactly the same region. Usually, ARCH_PFN_OFFSET and min_low_pfn are the same value. Handle them separately for robustness. Gapping pages will be in the memory map but marked as reserved and won't be touched. Signed-off-by: Johannes Weiner <jw@emlix.com> Signed-off-by: Chris Zankel <chris@zankel.net>
2008-11-06xtensa: move headers files to arch/xtensa/includeChris Zankel
Move all header files for xtensa to arch/xtensa/include and platform and variant header files to the appropriate arch/xtensa/platforms/ and arch/xtensa/variants/ directories. Moving the files gets also rid of all uses of symlinks in the Makefile. This has been completed already for the majority of the architectures and xtensa is one out of six missing.
