2026-10-06mm: drop pxd_ERROR()Anshuman Khandual
There are no more users left for any pxd_ERROR() either in generic MM or in the platform MM. Hence all these platform macros along with their generic fallback could be dropped across the tree. 2026-08-04mm: decouple protnone helpers from CONFIG_NUMA_BALANCINGKiryl Shutsemau (Meta)
Patch series "userfaultfd: working set tracking for VM guest memory", v10. This series adds userfaultfd support for tracking the working set of VM guest memory, so a VMM can identify hot pages and reclaim cold ones to tiered or remote storage. This patch (of 15): pte_protnone() and pmd_protnone() detect present-but-inaccessible page table entries. This capability is useful beyond NUMA balancing -- for example, userfaultfd working set tracking uses protnone PTEs to track page access without unmapping pages. Introduce CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_PTE_PROTNONE to decouple the protnone PTE infrastructure from CONFIG_NUMA_BALANCING. The six architectures that support protnone PTEs (x86_64, arm64, powerpc, s390, riscv, loongarch) now select this option, and CONFIG_NUMA_BALANCING depends on it. No functional change -- the same set of architectures continues to have working protnone support, but the infrastructure is now available independently of NUMA balancing. 2026-07-30mm: rename ARCH_ENABLE_THP_MIGRATION to ARCH_HAS_PMD_SOFTLEAVESUsama Arif
CONFIG_ARCH_ENABLE_THP_MIGRATION gates PMD-level migration entries. PMD-level device-private entries use the same migration mechanism and therefore require the same architecture support. Upcoming PMD-level swap entries can use the same PMD softleaf helpers without depending on page migration, so rename the architecture gate to CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_PMD_SOFTLEAVES. This describes the PMD entry capability rather than one current user of it. This is a pure rename: the set of selecting architectures (x86, arm64, s390, riscv, loongarch, and powerpc on PPC_BOOK3S_64) and the gating semantics are unchanged. No functional change intended. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/s390/linux Pull s390 updates from Vasily Gorbik: - Add support for CONFIG_PAGE_TABLE_CHECK and enable it in debug_defconfig. s390 can only tell user from kernel PTEs via the mm, so mm_struct is now passed into pxx_user_accessible_page() callbacks - Expose the PCI function UID as an arch-specific slot attribute in sysfs so a function can be identified by its user-defined id while still in standby. Introduces a generic ARCH_PCI_SLOT_GROUPS hook in drivers/pci/slot.c - Refresh s390 PCI documentation to reflect current behavior and cover previously undocumented sysfs attributes - zcrypt device driver cleanup series: consistent field types, clearer variable naming, a kernel-doc warning fix, and a comment explaining the intentional synchronize_rcu() in pkey_handler_register() - Provide an s390 arch_raw_cpu_ptr() that avoids the detour via get_lowcore() using alternatives, shrinking defconfig by ~27 kB - Guard identity-base randomization with kaslr_enabled() so nokaslr keeps the identity mapping at 0 even with RANDOMIZE_IDENTITY_BASE=y - Build S390_MODULES_SANITY_TEST as a module only by requiring KUNIT && m, since built-in would not exercise module loading - Remove the permanently commented-out HMCDRV_DEV_CLASS create_class() code in the hmcdrv driver - Drop stale ident_map_size extern conflicting with asm/page.h * tag 's390-7.1-1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/s390/linux: s390/zcrypt: Fix warning about wrong kernel doc comment PCI: s390: Expose the UID as an arch specific PCI slot attribute docs: s390/pci: Improve and update PCI documentation s390/pkey: Add comment about synchronize_rcu() to pkey base s390/hmcdrv: Remove commented out code s390/zcrypt: Slight rework on the agent_id field s390/zcrypt: Explicitly use a card variable in _zcrypt_send_cprb s390/zcrypt: Rework MKVP fields and handling s390/zcrypt: Make apfs a real unsigned int field s390/zcrypt: Rework domain processing within zcrypt device driver s390/zcrypt: Move inline function rng_type6cprb_msgx from header to code s390/percpu: Provide arch_raw_cpu_ptr() s390: Enable page table check for debug_defconfig s390/pgtable: Add s390 support for page table check s390/pgtable: Use set_pmd_bit() to invalidate PMD entry mm/page_table_check: Pass mm_struct to pxx_user_accessible_page() s390/boot: Respect kaslr_enabled() for identity randomization s390/Kconfig: Make modules sanity test a module-only option s390/setup: Drop stale ident_map_size declaration

2026-04-05mm: change to return bool for ptep_test_and_clear_young()Baolin Wang
Patch series "change young flag check functions to return bool", v2. This is a cleanup patchset to change all young flag check functions to return bool, as discussed with David in the previous thread[1]. Since callers only care about whether the young flag was set, returning bool makes the intention clearer. No functional changes intended. This patch (of 6): Callers use ptep_test_and_clear_young() to clear the young flag and check whether it was set. Change the return type to bool to make the intention clearer. 2026-03-30powerpc/64s: Add support for huge pfnmapsRitesh Harjani (IBM)
This uses _RPAGE_SW2 bit for the PMD and PUDs similar to PTEs. This also adds support for {pte,pmd,pud}_pgprot helpers needed for follow_pfnmap APIs. This allows us to extend the PFN mappings, e.g. PCI MMIO bars where it can grow as large as 8GB or even bigger, to map at PMD / PUD level. VFIO PCI core driver already supports fault handling at PMD / PUD level for more efficient BAR mappings. 2026-03-17powerpc/64s: Move serialize_against_pte_lookup() to hash_pgtable.cRitesh Harjani (IBM)
Originally, commit fa4531f753f1 ("powerpc/mm: Don't send IPI to all cpus on THP updates") introduced serialize_against_pte_lookup() call for both Radix and Hash. However below commit fixed the race with Radix commit 70cbc3cc78a9 ("mm: gup: fix the fast GUP race against THP collapse") And therefore following commit removed the serialize_against_pte_lookup() call from radix_pgtable.c commit bedf03416913 ("powerpc/64s/radix: don't need to broadcast IPI for radix pmd collapse flush") Now since serialize_against_pte_lookup() only gets called from hash__pmdp_collapse_flush(), thus move the related functions to hash_pgtable.c Hence this patch: - moves serialize_against_pte_lookup() from radix_pgtable.c to hash_pgtable.c - removes the radix specific calls from do_serialize() - renames do_serialize() to do_nothing(). There should not be any functionality change in this patch. 2026-03-17powerpc/64s: Fix unmap race with PMD migration entriesRitesh Harjani (IBM)
The following race is possible with migration swap entries or device-private THP entries. e.g. when move_pages is called on a PMD THP page, then there maybe an intermediate state, where PMD entry acts as a migration swap entry (pmd_present() is true). Unlike other architectures, s390 does not have means to distinguish kernel vs user page table entries - neither an entry itself, nor the address could be used for that. It is only the mm_struct that indicates whether an entry in question is mapped to a user space. So pass mm_struct to pxx_user_accessible_page() callbacks. 2026-01-26powerpc/mm: support page table checkRohan McLure
On creation and clearing of a page table mapping, instrument such calls by invoking page_table_check_pte_set and page_table_check_pte_clear respectively. These calls serve as a sanity check against illegal mappings. Enable ARCH_SUPPORTS_PAGE_TABLE_CHECK on powerpc, except when HUGETLB_PAGE is enabled (powerpc has some weirdness in how it implements set_huge_pte_at(), which may require some further work). 2026-01-26powerpc/mm: implement *_user_accessible_page() for ptesRohan McLure
Page table checking depends on architectures providing an implementation of p{te,md,ud}_user_accessible_page. With refactorisations made on powerpc/mm, the pte_access_permitted() and similar methods verify whether a userland page is accessible with the required permissions. Since page table checking is the only user of p{te,md,ud}_user_accessible_page(), implement these for all platforms, using some of the same preliminary checks taken by pte_access_permitted() on that platform. Since commit 8e9bd41e4ce1 ("powerpc/nohash: Replace pte_user() by pte_read()") pte_user() is no longer required to be present on all platforms as it may be equivalent to or implied by pte_read(). Hence implementations of pte_user_accessible_page() are specialised. 2026-01-20powerpc/mm: replace batch->active with is_lazy_mmu_mode_active()Kevin Brodsky
A per-CPU batch struct is activated when entering lazy MMU mode; its lifetime is the same as the lazy MMU section (it is deactivated when leaving the mode). Preemption is disabled in that interval to ensure that the per-CPU reference remains valid. The generic lazy_mmu layer now tracks whether a task is in lazy MMU mode. We can therefore use the generic helper is_lazy_mmu_mode_active() to tell whether a batch struct is active instead of tracking it explicitly. 2026-01-20mm: introduce CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_LAZY_MMU_MODEKevin Brodsky
Architectures currently opt in for implementing lazy_mmu helpers by defining __HAVE_ARCH_ENTER_LAZY_MMU_MODE. In preparation for introducing a generic lazy_mmu layer that will require storage in task_struct, let's switch to a cleaner approach: instead of defining a macro, select a CONFIG option. This patch introduces CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_LAZY_MMU_MODE and has each arch select it when it implements lazy_mmu helpers. __HAVE_ARCH_ENTER_LAZY_MMU_MODE is removed and <linux/pgtable.h> relies on the new CONFIG instead. On x86, lazy_mmu helpers are only implemented if PARAVIRT_XXL is selected. This creates some complications in arch/x86/boot/, because a few files manually undefine PARAVIRT* options. As a result <asm/paravirt.h> does not define the lazy_mmu helpers, but this breaks the build as <linux/pgtable.h> only defines them if !CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_LAZY_MMU_MODE. There does not seem to be a clean way out of this - let's just undefine that new CONFIG too. 2026-01-20powerpc/mm: implement arch_flush_lazy_mmu_mode()Kevin Brodsky
Upcoming changes to the lazy_mmu API will cause arch_flush_lazy_mmu_mode() to be called when leaving a nested lazy_mmu section. Move the relevant logic from arch_leave_lazy_mmu_mode() to arch_flush_lazy_mmu_mode() and have the former call the latter. 2026-01-07powerpc/32: Automatically adapt TASK_SIZE based on constraintsChristophe Leroy
At the time being, TASK_SIZE can be customized by the user via Kconfig but it is not possible to check all constraints in Kconfig. Impossible setups are detected at compile time with BUILD_BUG() but that leads to build failure when setting crazy values. It is not a problem on its own because the user will usually either use the default value or set a well thought value. However build robots generate crazy random configs that lead to build failures, and build robots see it as a regression every time a patch adds such a constraint. So instead of failing the build when the custom TASK_SIZE is too big, just adjust it to the maximum possible value matching the setup. Several architectures already calculate TASK_SIZE based on other parameters and options. In order to do so, move MODULES_VADDR calculation into task_size_32.h and ensure that: - On book3s/32, userspace and module area have their own segments (256M) - On 8xx, userspace has its own full PGDIR entries (4M) Then TASK_SIZE is guaranteed to be correct so remove related BUILD_BUG()s. 2025-11-18powerpc/64s/slb: Fix SLB multihit issue during SLB preloadDonet Tom
On systems using the hash MMU, there is a software SLB preload cache that mirrors the entries loaded into the hardware SLB buffer. This preload cache is subject to periodic eviction — typically after every 256 context switches — to remove old entry. To optimize performance, the kernel skips switch_mmu_context() in switch_mm_irqs_off() when the prev and next mm_struct are the same. However, on hash MMU systems, this can lead to inconsistencies between the hardware SLB and the software preload cache. If an SLB entry for a process is evicted from the software cache on one CPU, and the same process later runs on another CPU without executing switch_mmu_context(), the hardware SLB may retain stale entries. If the kernel then attempts to reload that entry, it can trigger an SLB multi-hit error. The following timeline shows how stale SLB entries are created and can cause a multi-hit error when a process moves between CPUs without a MMU context switch. CPU 0 CPU 1 ----- ----- Process P exec swapper/1 load_elf_binary begin_new_exc activate_mm switch_mm_irqs_off switch_mmu_context switch_slb /* * This invalidates all * the entries in the HW * and setup the new HW * SLB entries as per the * preload cache. */ context_switch sched_migrate_task migrates process P to cpu-1 Process swapper/0 context switch (to process P) (uses mm_struct of Process P) switch_mm_irqs_off() switch_slb load_slb++ /* * load_slb becomes 0 here * and we evict an entry from * the preload cache with * preload_age(). We still * keep HW SLB and preload * cache in sync, that is * because all HW SLB entries * anyways gets evicted in * switch_slb during SLBIA. * We then only add those * entries back in HW SLB, * which are currently * present in preload_cache * (after eviction). */ load_elf_binary continues... setup_new_exec() slb_setup_new_exec() sched_switch event sched_migrate_task migrates process P to cpu-0 context_switch from swapper/0 to Process P switch_mm_irqs_off() /* * Since both prev and next mm struct are same we don't call * switch_mmu_context(). This will cause the HW SLB and SW preload * cache to go out of sync in preload_new_slb_context. Because there * was an SLB entry which was evicted from both HW and preload cache * on cpu-1. Now later in preload_new_slb_context(), when we will try * to add the same preload entry again, we will add this to the SW * preload cache and then will add it to the HW SLB. Since on cpu-0 * this entry was never invalidated, hence adding this entry to the HW * SLB will cause a SLB multi-hit error. */ load_elf_binary continues... START_THREAD start_thread preload_new_slb_context /* * This tries to add a new EA to preload cache which was earlier * evicted from both cpu-1 HW SLB and preload cache. However, preload_new_slb_context and slb_setup_new_exec also attempt to load some of the same entries, which can trigger a multi-hit. In most cases, these additional preloads simply hit existing entries and add nothing new. Removing these functions avoids redundant preloads and eliminates the multi-hit issue. 2025-11-18powerpc, mm: Fix mprotect on book3s 32-bitDave Vasilevsky
On 32-bit book3s with hash-MMUs, tlb_flush() was a no-op. This was unnoticed because all uses until recently were for unmaps, and thus handled by __tlb_remove_tlb_entry(). After commit 4a18419f71cd ("mm/mprotect: use mmu_gather") in kernel 5.19, tlb_gather_mmu() started being used for mprotect as well. This caused mprotect to simply not work on these machines: int *ptr = mmap(NULL, 4096, PROT_READ|PROT_WRITE, MAP_PRIVATE|MAP_ANONYMOUS, -1, 0); *ptr = 1; // force HPTE to be created mprotect(ptr, 4096, PROT_READ); *ptr = 2; // should segfault, but succeeds Fixed by making tlb_flush() actually flush TLB pages. This finally agrees with the behaviour of boot3s64's tlb_flush(). Commit 82ef440f9a38 ("powerpc/603: Copy kernel PGD entries into all PGDIRs and preallocate execmem page tables") was supposed to extend to powerpc 603 the copy of kernel PGD entries into all PGDIRs implemented in a previous patch on the 8xx. 2025-09-01powerpc: Replace __ASSEMBLY__ with __ASSEMBLER__ in non-uapi headersThomas Huth
While the GCC and Clang compilers already define __ASSEMBLER__ automatically when compiling assembler code, __ASSEMBLY__ is a macro that only gets defined by the Makefiles in the kernel. This is bad since macros starting with two underscores are names that are reserved by the C language. It can also be very confusing for the developers when switching between userspace and kernelspace coding, or when dealing with uapi headers that rather should use __ASSEMBLER__ instead. So let's standardize now on the __ASSEMBLER__ macro that is provided by the compilers. This is almost a completely mechanical patch (done with a simple "sed -i" statement), apart from tweaking two comments manually in arch/powerpc/include/asm/bug.h and arch/powerpc/include/asm/kasan.h (which did not have proper underscores at the end) and fixing a checkpatch error about spaces in arch/powerpc/include/asm/spu_csa.h. 2025-07-09mm: change vm_get_page_prot() to accept vm_flags_t argumentLorenzo Stoakes
Patch series "use vm_flags_t consistently". The VMA flags field vma->vm_flags is of type vm_flags_t. Right now this is exactly equivalent to unsigned long, but it should not be assumed to be. Much code that references vma->vm_flags already correctly uses vm_flags_t, but a fairly large chunk of code simply uses unsigned long and assumes that the two are equivalent. This series corrects that and has us use vm_flags_t consistently. This series is motivated by the desire to, in a future series, adjust vm_flags_t to be a u64 regardless of whether the kernel is 32-bit or 64-bit in order to deal with the VMA flag exhaustion issue and avoid all the various problems that arise from it (being unable to use certain features in 32-bit, being unable to add new flags except for 64-bit, etc.) This is therefore a critical first step towards that goal. At any rate, using the correct type is of value regardless. We additionally take the opportunity to refer to VMA flags as vm_flags where possible to make clear what we're referring to. Overall, this series does not introduce any functional change. This patch (of 3): We abstract the type of the VMA flags to vm_flags_t, however in may places it is simply assumed this is unsigned long, which is simply incorrect. At the moment this is simply an incongruity, however in future we plan to change this type and therefore this change is a critical requirement for doing so. Overall, this patch does not introduce any functional change. 2025-03-16mm/hugetlb: enable bootmem allocation from CMA areasFrank van der Linden
If hugetlb_cma_only is enabled, we know that hugetlb pages can only be allocated from CMA. Now that there is an interface to do early reservations from a CMA area (returning memblock memory), it can be used to allocate hugetlb pages from CMA. This also allows for doing pre-HVO on these pages (if enabled). Make sure to initialize the page structures and associated data correctly. Create a flag to signal that a hugetlb page has been allocated from CMA to make things a little easier. Some configurations of powerpc have a special hugetlb bootmem allocator, so introduce a boolean arch_specific_huge_bootmem_alloc that returns true if such an allocator is present. In that case, CMA bootmem allocations can't be used, so check that function before trying. 2024-09-01mm/powerpc: add missing pud helpersPeter Xu
Some new helpers will be needed for pud entry updates soon. Introduce these helpers by referencing the pmd ones. Namely: - pudp_invalidate(): this helper invalidates a huge pud before a split happens, so that the invalidated pud entry will make sure no race will happen (either with software, like a concurrent zap, or hardware, like a/d bit lost). - pud_modify(): this helper applies a new pgprot to an existing huge pud mapping. For more information on why we need these two helpers, please refer to the corresponding pmd helpers in the mprotect() code path. 2024-07-12powerpc/64s: use contiguous PMD/PUD instead of HUGEPDChristophe Leroy
On book3s/64, the only user of hugepd is hash in 4k mode. All other setups (hash-64, radix-4, radix-64) use leaf PMD/PUD. Rework hash-4k to use contiguous PMD and PUD instead. In that setup there are only two huge page sizes: 16M and 16G. 16M sits at PMD level and 16G at PUD level. pte_update doesn't know page size, lets use the same trick as hpte_need_flush() to get page size from segment properties. That's not the most efficient way but let's do that until callers of pte_update() provide page size instead of just a huge flag. 2024-04-25mm/powerpc: redefine pXd_huge() with pXd_leaf()Peter Xu
PowerPC book3s 4K mostly has the same definition on both, except pXd_huge() constantly returns 0 for hash MMUs. As Michael Ellerman pointed out [1], it is safe to check _PAGE_PTE on hash MMUs, as the bit will never be set so it will keep returning false. As a reference, __p[mu]d_mkhuge() will trigger a BUG_ON trying to create such huge mappings for 4K hash MMUs. Meanwhile, the major powerpc hugetlb pgtable walker __find_linux_pte() already used pXd_leaf() to check leaf hugetlb mappings. The goal should be that we will have one API pXd_leaf() to detect all kinds of huge mappings (hugepd is still special in this case, though). AFAICT we need to use the pXd_leaf() impl (rather than pXd_huge()'s) to make sure ie. THPs on hash MMU will also return true. This helps to simplify a follow up patch to drop pXd_huge() treewide. NOTE: *_leaf() definition need to be moved before the inclusion of asm/book3s/64/pgtable-4k.h, which defines pXd_huge() with it. Instead mark it as always inline, and change the BUG() to BUILD_BUG(). That should allow the compiler to see that the function is never called, and therefore that it never returns, fixing the build error. 2024-03-06mm/powerpc: define pXd_large() with pXd_leaf()Peter Xu
Patch series "mm/treewide: Replace pXd_large() with pXd_leaf()", v3. These two APIs are mostly always the same. It's confusing to have both of them. Merge them into one. Here I used pXd_leaf() only because pXd_leaf() is a global API which is always defined, while pXd_large() is not. We have yet one more API that is similar which is pXd_huge(), but that's even trickier, so let's do it step by step. Some special cares are taken for ppc and x86, they're done as separate cleanups first. This patch (of 10): The two definitions are the same. The only difference is that pXd_large() is only defined with THP selected, and only on book3s 64bits. Instead of implementing it twice, make pXd_large() a macro to pXd_leaf(). Define it unconditionally just like pXd_leaf(). This helps to prepare merging the two APIs. 2023-10-23powerpc/32s: Implement local_flush_tlb_page_psize()Michael Ellerman
There's a single call to local_flush_tlb_page_psize() in the code patching code. That call is never executed on 32-bit Book3S, because it's guarded by mm_patch_enabled() which is essentially a radix_enabled() check, which is always false on 32s. However depending on how the optimiser sees things it may still trip over the BUILD_BUG() in the 32s stub of local_flush_tlb_page_psize(). To avoid that, implement it in terms of flush_range() so that if it ever becomes called it should function, even if not optimally. Note that flush_range() deals with page aligning the address and so on, and that 32s doesn't support huge pages so there should be no issue with non-standard page sizes needing to be flushed.
