git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs Pull vfs fixes from Christian Brauner: - writeback: - Update dirtied_when instead of dirtied_time_when when a wb switch puts an inode at the newest end of the target b_dirty list. The list was left out of order so move_expired_inodes() could stop before older inodes, and the lazytime expiration timestamp was reset - Clear the old wb's dirty-I/O state and bandwidth contribution when a batch of inode switches leaves its dirty lists empty. An empty wb stayed scheduled for periodic writeback and inflated bdi->tot_write_bandwidth - Take wb_switch_rwsem across the inode scan of cleanup_offline_cgwb(). The v7.3-rc5 fix that rotates scanned inodes let a scan racing a sync()'s queue_io() move lazytime inodes past the sync's cutoff, so sync() returned without persisting their timestamps - Don't kick writeback for an IOCB_DONTCACHE write on an inode that has no wb yet. With cgroup writeback an O_DIRECT RWF_DONTCACHE write to a block device dereferenced NULL - statmount/listmount/listns: - Refuse statmount() string requests with a buffer that isn't larger than struct statmount - Don't wrap around with a U64_MAX cursor in listmount() and listns() - Don't end listns() at an inactive namespace - Only add init_ipc_ns and init_net to the namespace trees if CONFIG_IPC_NS and CONFIG_NET_NS are enabled - iomap: - Only mark blocks uptodate in __iomap_write_begin() after reading them and let __iomap_write_end() mark the zeroed blocks uptodate once the copy from userspace succeeded - Check a chunk against max_integrity_io_size() on its own before the bio size check - Only enforce block alignment for direct I/O into holes and unwritten extents if IOMAP_DIO_FSBLOCK_ALIGNED is set - backing-file: - Check S_APPEND and S_IMMUTABLE on the backing inode. FUSE passthrough opens the backing file with vfs_open() which skips may_open(), so anyone who may open the FUSE file for writing could overwrite an append-only backing file anywhere or write to an immutable one. Open, mmap and writes now check the backing inode the way may_open() and do_mmap() do - Always call kiocb_end_write() for a queued write - Let backing files inherit FMODE_NONOTIFY from the user file. The event fds fanotify creates for permission events on a stacked filesystem raised FS_OPEN_PERM on the real path from inside the listener's read() and deadlocked listeners with marks on both layers - pidfs: - Look the task up before checking for exit information in PIDFD_GET_INFO and start over if the task no longer owns the pid once all fields have been read. A caller racing release_task() got neither PIDFD_INFO_PID nor PIDFD_INFO_EXIT or ESRCH although the exit information was available, and a caller racing a sub-thread's exec reported that thread's tid as the pid - Clear the mask bits of fields that lie beyond the struct size the caller passed. The uapi header promises that the mask names no such field but a caller passing PIDFD_INFO_SIZE_VER0 got the coredump and supported mask bits set for fields that were never written - aio: - Give the aio ring a ->read_folio that fails with EIO so a fault on a ring whose file was truncated gets SIGBUS instead of jumping to NULL - Check nr_events against the ring size before doubling it in ioctx_alloc() - splice: - Only write back an implicit file position in do_splice() when the splice helper succeeded. splice doesn't take f_pos_lock so a failed splice restored a stale snapshot over a position that a concurrent getdents() had moved. On ext2 the next readdir then trusted an offset inside a directory entry - Retry tee() when the input pipe was emptied or the output pipe filled between the prep steps and link_pipe() instead of returning 0 while the input pipe still has writers, as splice_pipe_to_pipe() does - ucount: - Take the reference that pins a ucounts level on the 0 -> 1 transition before checking the rlimit - Read the parent ucounts before dropping the rlimit count in do_dec_rlimit_put_ucounts() - inode: - Rotate inodes whose page cache couldn't be dropped to the tail of the LRU - Skip inodes that another LRU walker is isolating - setns: - Set nsset->flags before anything in prepare_nsset() can fail so the error path drops the cred prepared for CLONE_NEWUSER. A failing setns() with CLONE_NEWUSER and CLONE_NEWNS leaked it together with its user namespace - Refuse setns(CLONE_NEWNS) for a task that shares its fs_struct again when more namespaces are requested - minix: - Restore uptodate on the pinned bitmap buffers before redirtying them after a failed writeback instead of tripping the warning in mark_buffer_dirty(), as ext2 and ext4 do for their superblock buffers - Reject rmdir() of a directory with a corrupted link count with EFSCORRUPTED instead of hitting the drop_nlink() warning - userns: Keep the exec securebits and their locks when creating or joining a user namespace. set_cred_user_ns() reset all securebits to SECUREBITS_DEFAULT so anyone who may create a user namespace could shed SECBIT_EXEC_RESTRICT_FILE and SECBIT_EXEC_DENY_INTERACTIVE with a single unshare(CLONE_NEWUSER) - fs: Honor FOP_UNSIGNED_OFFSET in sys_llseek() and in the pread64(), pwrite64(), preadv() and pwritev() wrappers - proc/kcore: Advance the vmalloc retry in read_kcore_iter() by the last vread_iter() copy instead of the running total - eventpoll: Return the error when the wakeup source for EPOLLWAKEUP can't be created in EPOLL_CTL_MOD instead of reporting success without suspend protection - coredump: Mark do_coredump() noinline_for_stack - nsfs: Check the trailing bytes of a namespace file handle in bytes instead of words - netfs: Restore the per-level and per-point decoding of the debug mask - exportfs: Release the directory file get_name() opened with __fput_sync(). From nfsd's kernel threads the deferred fputs arrived faster than delayed_fput retired them and each pinned the directory's readdir state, growing unreclaimable slab by about 90 MB per second under a parallel tree walk - fs: Call ramfs_kill_sb() for a ramfs rootfs. Since rootfs can be unmounted as of v7.0 its struct ramfs_fs_info was leaked - signal: Check the blocked mask for every entry dequeue_synchronous_signal() looks at. The scan could select a blocked synchronous signal and deliver it while blocked - super: Convert the superblock device table from an rhltable to a plain hashtable under a spinlock. This fixes a bug from v7.3 where fs_bdev_freeze() froze a btrfs filesystem through a stale member that open_ctree() had already released while the freeze was waiting for SB_BORN - fork: Leave rcu_users at zero until copy_process() can't fail anymore. bpf_task_acquire() handed out trusted references to the new task from the task_alloc LSM hook and sched_ext's ops.init_task() and a failing fork freed the task behind them - xattr: Always run cap_convert_nscap() for a security.capability write. A zero-length setxattr() skipped it and let an unprivileged caller without CAP_SETFCAP or write permission on the file plant an empty security.capability xattr that made every execve() of the binary fail with EINVAL - namei: Skip the S_ISDIR assertion in - proc: Refuse to mount on entries below /proc/<pid>/net like fd/, fdinfo/ and map_files/. proc_net_d_revalidate() always fails so the first lookup by anyone with search permission ran d_invalidate() on the dentry and detached every mount on it, locked mounts included - libfs: Hold one mount reference for all pins instead of one per pin. The pin count is what keeps the mount alive, so the per-pin reference only cost a mntget() and a mntput() through mntput_no_expire_slowpath() for every debugfs, tracefs, securityfs or configfs file that comes and goes - iov_iter: Return 0 from iov_iter_alignment() for an empty iterator of any type - watch_queue: Give info_id its own storage instead of overlaying it with rcu_head - filelock: Take an active superblock reference while waiting for a delegation break. After a lazy umount closing the delegation holder could shut down the superblock under the waiter whose final iput() then ran shmem_evict_inode() on freed state - fs: Skip the copy_file_range() write limit checks when there is no data to copy - bpf: Allow bpf_d_path() from fentry on filp_close_sync(). Since close_range() became synchronous this cycle close(), close_range() and the closes on exec and exit no longer go through filp_close(). fexit stays rejected since the file may be gone by then - fs_pin: Dequeue the wait entry unconditionally in pin_kill(). A spuriously woken waiter kept its on-stack entry queued, took that as proof that the pin was alive and used the freed acct structure when umount() of the accounting file raced acct(2) - dcache: Don't fail __d_obtain_alias() for an inode without links and aliases. The ESTALE check added this cycle broke open_by_handle_at() and nfsd file handle decoding on NFS and FUSE where i_nlink is just what the server last reported and the handle may well still be valid - selftests/ovl: Fix the mountinfo expectations of the detached layer test which has failed since it was added * tag 'vfs-7.4-rc1.fixes' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/vfs/vfs: (60 commits) fs: don't fail __d_obtain_alias() for unlinked inodes ns: don't add init_ipc_ns and init_net without namespace support aio: avoid request count overflow in ioctx_alloc() selftests/ovl: fix detached layer mountinfo expectations bpf: Allow bpf_d_path() from filp_close_sync() fs: skip copy_file_range write limits when there is no data minix: reject rmdir of a directory with a corrupted link count fs_pin: do not trust the pin after a spurious wakeup in pin_kill() ucount: read the parent ucounts before dropping the rlimit count splice: retry tee() instead of returning 0 when it races selftests/pidfd: test that fields beyond the struct size are not reported pidfs: do not report fields that do not fit into the caller's struct fs: let backing files inherit FMODE_NONOTIFY from the user file splice: avoid stale f_pos writeback on error backing-file: always end a queued write filelock: keep superblock active through delegation wait watch_queue: keep info_id separate from rcu_head iomap: only follow dio alignment requirement if specified iov_iter: fix NULL deref in iov_iter_alignment() backing-file: enforce append-only and immutable backing inodes ...
4 daysuserns: don't drop the exec securebitsChristian Brauner
SECBIT_EXEC_RESTRICT_FILE and SECBIT_EXEC_DENY_INTERACTIVE tell script interpreters to only run what AT_EXECVE_CHECK allows and to refuse interactive input. A service manager sets them together with their lock bits so that nothing below it can turn them off again. But set_cred_user_ns() resets all securebits to SECUREBITS_DEFAULT. So any task that can create a user namespace sheds the locked exec bits with a single unshare(CLONE_NEWUSER) and joining one with setns() does the same. The lock is pointless if anyone who may create a user namespace can drop it, and that is pretty much everyone. Resetting the other bits is fine. They are about how capabilities are computed and a new user namespace starts out with a full set of capabilities anyway. The exec bits grant nothing though. They are restrictions a task placed on itself, just like no_new_privs which a user namespace doesn't touch either. So keep them and their locks. Reproducer: // SPDX-License-Identifier: GPL-2.0 /* Lock the exec securebits, then create a user namespace and look at them again. */ #define _GNU_SOURCE #include <sched.h> #include <stdio.h> #include <sys/prctl.h> #define SECBIT_EXEC_RESTRICT_FILE (1 << 8) #define SECBIT_EXEC_RESTRICT_FILE_LOCKED (1 << 9) #define SECBIT_EXEC_DENY_INTERACTIVE (1 << 10) #define SECBIT_EXEC_DENY_INTERACTIVE_LOCKED (1 << 11) int main(void) { int bits = SECBIT_EXEC_RESTRICT_FILE | SECBIT_EXEC_RESTRICT_FILE_LOCKED | SECBIT_EXEC_DENY_INTERACTIVE | SECBIT_EXEC_DENY_INTERACTIVE_LOCKED; if (prctl(PR_SET_SECUREBITS, bits, 0, 0, 0)) { perror("PR_SET_SECUREBITS"); return 1; } printf("before: 0x%x\n", prctl(PR_GET_SECUREBITS, 0, 0, 0, 0)); printf("clear locked bits: %s\n", prctl(PR_SET_SECUREBITS, 0, 0, 0, 0) ? With this patch the last line reads 0xf00 as well. git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linkinjeon/ntfs Pull ntfs updates from Namjae Jeon: "New features: - Implement ioctls to list, read, write, and remove named streams on files and directories. Provide optional file:stream pathname access through streams_interface=windows, exposing streams as regular file descriptors with support for mmap, locking, truncation, and allocation. - Support file attribute queries and updates through FS_IOC_GETFLAGS and FS_IOC_SETFLAGS. Store immutable, append-only, nodump, and noatime settings in the private $LINUXFLAGS extended attribute and restore them when loading inodes. Also report compression, encryption, and the mount-wide case-folding policy as read-only attributes. Other changes: - Expose the existing NTFS volume serial number through FS_IOC_GETFSUUID by registering it as an eight-byte filesystem identifier. - Validate MFT I/O geometry and write MFT records and mirror data through mapped I/O units, keeping neighboring records intact when multiple records share a native 4Kn block. Track folio writeback until all BIOs complete, serialize raw record updates against writeback, and use the caller's requested completion mode. - Discard stale uninitialized cache data before extending initialized size, ensure shared mmap writes update initialized size after native 4Kn size extension, and synchronize attribute inode sizes after internal resizes. Keep VFS and NTFS sizes consistent when write-error rollback fails and record the volume error. - Wait for existing folio writeback before updating attribute data, require page alignment for full-page write optimizations, and include the final partial cluster in synchronous writes. Skip duplicate VFS page-cache truncation under the MFT record lock to avoid a truncate and writeback deadlock. - Restart allocation zone searches after failed hints and prevent contiguous allocation requests from returning additional disjoint runs that callers leave uninitialized. Allow fallocate after MFT-zone exhaustion and interrupt allocation loops only for fatal signals, avoiding spurious interruptions from io_uring task-work notifications. - Wait for the initial bitmap scan before extending the MFT bitmap, bound direct allocation candidates by the volume size, update free-space accounting, and undo only newly allocated clusters after run coalescing. Update attribute-list inode size before reserving additional space. - Hold runlist locks while expanding non-resident attributes, balance locks during MFT extension error handling, and avoid pointers invalidated by runlist reallocation. Keep source runlists available for rollback and allocate enough room for runlist markers and terminators. - Return errors for unmappable runlist fragments instead of treating them as holes or delayed allocation. Check non-resident attribute sizes against their allocation and fail mounts when $MFT needs extent records outside the decoded runlist to describe itself, preventing silent zero reads and mount hangs. - Load and validate $BadClus:$Bad at mount time and reserve known bad clusters before the free-space scan. Fall back to read-only operation when bad-cluster metadata cannot be validated and prevent subsequent read-write remounts. - Serialize volume flag updates and retain the dirty bit after metadata changes while the volume remains mounted read-write. Persist recorded errors after final metadata commits, fail ordinary read-only remounts on sync, commit, or flush errors, and retain the dirty bit on forced remounts. - Flush the device write cache when syncing directories and report flush failures from both file and directory fsync. Drain in-flight direct I/O before buffered write fallback and keep nonblocking requests from entering the blocking fallback path. - Mount hibernated volumes, or volumes whose hibernation state cannot be determined, read-only regardless of the errors= policy. Prevent mount-time and dirty-state updates from modifying hibernated volumes. - Validate complete EA chains, link zero-terminated tails when appending entries, retain the EA presence flag, and distinguish empty values from removal. Propagate lookup, write, and truncate errors, restore both EA attributes after failed updates, and shut down the volume if restoration fails. - Restore the previous ACL xattr when a subsequent WSL mode update fails, including replacement and removal cases. Record rollback failures so an unsuccessful permission change cannot silently leave inconsistent ACL and mode state. - Apply MST fixups to individual index blocks on large-page systems and use fixed 512-byte VCN units when an index block is smaller than its cluster. Support lookup and removal of POSIX names containing Windows-invalid characters and identify directory symlinks and junctions during enumeration. - Report the stored creation time for symbolic links through statx() when querying the link itself with AT_SYMLINK_NOFOLLOW. - Use wider decompression offsets to avoid overflow on 64 KB pages, accept the standard sparse compression unit, and require the compressed-size field only on the first attribute extent. Block direct reads and skip readahead for encrypted files to prevent returning raw ciphertext. - Validate index entry offsets, logfile update sequence array counts, attribute-list sizes, and index collation key lengths to prevent out-of-bounds accesses, NULL pointer dereferences, and excessive allocations from corrupt volume metadata. - Derive FITRIM bitmap indexes from the page size and retain the full 64-bit minimum discard length. Balance highmem mappings in logfile and MFT mirror checks and propagate specific errors from extent, attribute, and reparse operations. - Compare streams_interface with the mounted volume's setting during remount, make named-stream UAPI padding explicit, document stream access and Linux file attributes, and add the NTFS UAPI header to MAINTAINERS" * tag 'ntfs-for-7.4-rc1' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/linkinjeon/ntfs: (93 commits) ntfs: handle a failed size rollback in the write error path ntfs: fix u16 truncation of the update sequence array count check ntfs: reject index blocks with a too small entries offset ntfs: support persistent noatime attribute ntfs: roll back the ACL xattr commit when the WSL mode update fails ntfs: report birth time for symbolic links ntfs: support FS_IOC_GETFSUUID ntfs: avoid unnecessary padding in uapi structure ntfs: flush the block device when syncing a directory ntfs: report block device flush failures from fsync ntfs: fix NULL dereference on index allocation open failure ntfs: compare streams_interface with mounted volume on remount ntfs: widen the sub-block offsets in ntfs_decompress() ntfs: reject direct I/O reads of encrypted files ntfs: do not read ahead encrypted files ntfs: persist nodump in the $LINUXFLAGS EA ntfs: persist append-only in the $LINUXFLAGS EA ntfs: persist immutable in the $LINUXFLAGS EA ntfs: add fileattr query support ntfs: restore EA attributes when an update fails ...

14 daysntfs: add named stream ioctls supportNamjae Jeon
NTFS supports multiple named $DATA attributes, commonly known as alternate data streams. Add NTFS-specific ioctls to list, read, write, and remove named streams through an opened base file or directory. The UAPI provides separate commands for each operation. - NTFS_IOC_STREAM_READ - NTFS_IOC_STREAM_WRITE - NTFS_IOC_STREAM_REMOVE - NTFS_IOC_LIST_STREAMS Read and write requests use struct ntfs_stream to specify the stream name, byte offset, and transfer length. Writes create the stream if it does not already exist. A write failure after creation may leave the new stream visible. It is not rolled back because another caller may already have opened it. Userspace can remove it with NTFS_IOC_STREAM_REMOVE. The list command returns variable-length entries containing each named stream's data size, allocated size, and name. If the buffer is too small, the command returns -ENOSPC without copying entries. bytes_returned reports the required buffer size, and stream_count reports the number of streams. Stream names use the mounted filesystem NLS by default. Set NTFS_STREAM_FL_UTF16 to pass or receive raw UTF-16LE names. In NLS mode, names that cannot be represented by the mounted character set are omitted from the list. Use UTF-16 mode for lossless enumeration. Read and write transfers are limited to 16 MiB per request. Signed-off-by: Namjae Jeon <linkinjeon@kernel.org>

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm Pull more MM updates from Andrew Morton: - "mm/rmap: index MAP_PRIVATE file-backed folios by anonymous pgoff" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Index MAP_PRIVATE file-backed folios by their anonymous page offset to resolve confusion around reverse mapping for zeroed and CoW'd file-backed memory. Use this new VMA anonymous page offset tracking to eliminate index conflicts and lay the foundation for scalable CoW performance improvements. - "promote mapped executable folios after first usage for MGLRU" (Baolin Wang) Make MGLRU's protection of mapped executable file folios more reliable. Follow the classical LRU's logic, promoting mapped executable file folios after their first usage to give executable code a better chance to stay in memory and improve workload performance. - "mm: vmscan: fix node reclaim ignoring swappiness parameter" (Ridong Chen) Fix per-node proactive reclaim interface's ignoring the swappiness parameter when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled by consolidating sc_swappiness() into a single function that checks proactive_swappiness regardless of kernel configuration. - "mm/vmscan: reduce lru_lock contention via vmstat-derived scan-balance cost" (Usama Arif) Reduce lru_lock contention in the reclaim path by deriving scan-balance costs from vmstat counters rather than lock-acquired producer updates. Read and decay these cost signals on the reclaim side under a dedicated per-lruvec lock, reducing total LRU lock wait time by over 60% without impacting scan throughput. - "zram: fix zram issues reported by sashiko" (Sergey Senozhatsky) Fix two low-risk zram bugs which Sashiko spotted in drive-by review. - "Honor XA_FLAGS_ACCOUNT in xas_split_alloc() and charge to folio's memcg" (Zi Yan) Fix xas_split_alloc() by enabling target folio memcg charging during splits and adding the missing __GFP_ACCOUNT flag for proper XArray node memory accounting. - "selftests/mm: use pattern matching in .gitignore" (Pratyush Mallick) Replace hardcoded binary names in selftests/mm/.gitignore with a generic pattern-matching rule to automatically ignore generated test files and avoid manual updates when adding new tests. - "mm/page_ext: remove pgdat_page_ext_init()" (Sang-Heon Jeon) Make the incompatibility between FLATMEM and NUMA explicit in mm/Kconfig and remove the unused pgdat_page_ext_init() function. - "zram: fix zstd error paths and add parameter validation" (Haoqin Huang) Clean up zram compression backends by removing redundant error cleanup, adding parameter and dictionary validation, auto-prefixing algorithm error logs, and resetting parameters prior to reinitialization. - "zram: fix stale scan bounds after reinitialization" (Longlong Xia) Prevent out-of-bounds slot accesses during concurrent zram resets by moving table scan bound calculations under dev_lock in writeback_store() and read_block_state(). - "add anon mTHP collapse test cases" (Baolin Wang) Extend selftests helper functions to support arbitrary page orders and add new test cases and options for mTHP collapse in khugepaged. - "selftests/mm: Handle unsupported and transient test conditions" (Muhammad Usama Anjum) Update MM selftests to report a SKIP status instead of a failure when required kernel or filesystem features are unsupported, while adding retry logic for transient page migration errors. - "mm/zswap: Fixes and improves the zswap shrink" (Hao Jia) Fix the missing zswap global shrinker when CONFIG_MEMCG is disabled and extend shrink_memcg() to support batch writeback for improved writeback efficiency. - "alloc_tag: introduce IOCTL-based filtering for MAP" (Suren Baghdasaryan) Introduce an IOCTL-based binary interface for memory allocation profiling that enables kernel-side filtering before per-CPU counter aggregation. This eliminates the text-parsing overhead of /proc/allocinfo and provides up to a 20x speedup by transferring only filtered allocation data to userspace. - "better block swap batching and a different take on swap_ops v5" (Christoph Hellwig) Refactor block swap I/O to use swap_iocb for batching instead of single-bio requests and rebase the swap_ops interface, achieving faster swap throughput during kernel builds. - "mm: kmemleak: reduce transient false positives by confirming leaks" (Catalin Marinas) Reduce false-positive kmemleak reports by combining two kmemleak enhancements that add a second confirmation scan and a configurable minimum unreferenced scan count module parameter. - "mm: kmemleak: default min_unref_scans to 2 for verbose kernels" (Breno Leitao) Auto-scanning kernels can generate false-positive memory leak reports on single scans, so this patch defaults min_unref_scans to 2 when CONFIG_DEBUG_KMEMLEAK_VERBOSE is enabled to require a second confirming scan. - "swap_ops updates" (Christoph Hellwig) Batching I/O for synchronous swap devices causes performance regressions and filesystem-based swap suffers from double-indirection overhead. This series resolves both issues by reintroducing per-folio writes for synchronous swap and allowing filesystems to directly export their own swap_ops. - "mm/khugepaged: several cleanups" (Nico Pache) khugepaged accumulated redundant state-checking patterns and outdated comments following mTHP integration. Introduce dedicated helpers for PTE validation and event counting while refreshing the internal documentation. - "maple_tree: lock checking and clean ups" (Liam Howlett) Syzbot reports incorrectly blame memory management exit paths for locking bugs, maple tree erase operations risk allocation failures without gfp flags and internal documentation lacks clarity. Improve lock error detection, update docs, fix race and allocation edge cases and optimize erase allocations using a fallback to GFP_KERNEL | GFP_NOFAIL. * tag 'mm-stable-2026-08-26-15-22' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm: (172 commits) selftests/proc: make proc-maps-race work with READ_IMPLIES_EXEC memcg: move LRU size accounting on reparenting instead of copying it mm/vmscan: fix comment logic in balance_pgdat maple_tree: add helper mas_make_walkable() maple_tree: avoid extra gap calculation maple_tree: fix argument name in header maple_tree: change two GFP flags in tests maple_tree: document erase and allocations better maple_tree: avoid mas_erase() and mtree_erase() failures maple_tree: document that erase may use GFP_KERNEL for allocations maple_tree: catch race in mas_alloc_cyclic() maple_tree: add bulk parent set helper maple_tree: micro optimisation of mas_wr_store_type() maple_tree: optimise mas_wr_node_store() when not in rcu mode maple_tree: use prefetched value in mas_wr_store_type() maple_tree: clarify comments on mas_nomem() maple_tree: drop MAPLE_ALLOC_SLOTS maple_tree: drop dead code from mas_extend_spanning_null() maple_tree: documentation fix maple_tree: add write lock checking with lockdep sequence numbers ...

2026-08-24alloc_tag: add ioctl to /proc/allocinfoSuren Baghdasaryan
Patch series "alloc_tag: introduce IOCTL-based filtering for MAP", v8. Currently, memory allocation profiling data is primarily exposed through /proc/allocinfo. While useful for manual inspection, this text-based interface poses challenges for production monitoring and large-scale analysis: 1. Userspace must parse large amounts of text to extract specific fields. 2. To find specific tags, userspace must read the entire dataset, requiring many context switches and high data copying. 3. The kernel currently aggregates per-CPU counters for every allocation size, even those the user intends to filter out immediately. This series introduces a new IOCTL-based binary interface for allocinfo that supports kernel-side filtering. By allowing the user to specify a filter mask, we significantly reduce the work performed in-kernel and the amount of data transferred to userspace. The IOCTL mechanism was chosen for allocinfo to address the per-CPU counter aggregation bottleneck. A traditional read() operation must report the total allocation count and sizes for every code tag in the system. Doing so requires iterating across all CPUs to sum their per-CPU counters for thousands of tags, which introduces substantial runtime overhead. The IOCTL interface allows userspace to push selective filtering criteria directly into the kernel before the per-CPU counter aggregation. The kernel aggregates per-CPU counters only for a small subset of tags that match the filter. This results in significant performance improvement. Beyond fast filtered retrieval, the IOCTL foundation allows introducing a context capture mechanism in the future to capture the context for specific allocations. Performance measurements were conducted on an Intel Xeon Platinum 8481C (224 CPUs) with caches dropped before each run. The IOCTL mechanism shows a ~20x performance improvement for filtered queries. The kernel avoids the expensive per-CPU counter aggregation (alloc_tag_read) for any tags that fail the initial string or location filters. Scenario 1: Specific File Filtering (arch/x86/events/rapl.c) 1. Traditional (cat /proc/allocinfo | grep): 22ms (sys) 2. IOCTL Interface: 1ms (sys) Scenario 2: Compound Filtering (Filename + Size) 1. Traditional: (cat ... | grep | awk): 21ms (sys) 2. IOCTL Interface: 1ms (sys) Scenario 3: Size-Based Filtering (min_size = 1MB) 1. Traditional: (cat ... | awk): 21ms (sys) 2. IOCTL Interface: 14ms (sys) This patch (of 6): Add the following ioctl commands for /proc/allocinfo file: ALLOCINFO_IOC_CONTENT_ID - gets content identifier which can be used to check whether the file content has changed specifically due to module load/unload. Every time a module is loaded / unloaded, the returned value will be different. By comparing the identifier value at the beginning and at the end of the content retrieval operation, users can validate retrieved information for consistency. ALLOCINFO_IOC_GET_AT - gets the record at the specified position. This is the position of a record in /proc/allocinfo. ALLOCINFO_IOC_GET_NEXT - gets the record next to the last retrieved one. If no records were previously retrieved, returns the first record. Note, function file and module names often have the same prefixes, therefore when filtering for them, we compare the last 64 characters to minimize the chances of name collisions. It replaces legacy type usage in core functions such as do_mmap(), unmapped area allocation, mm->def_vma_flags, and VMA operations like mlock, mprotect, and mremap. - "Two small patches to clean up mm/mm_slot.h" (xu xin) Refactor mm_slot.h by introducing mm_slot_remove() to unify duplicate slot deletion sequences in khugepaged and KSM. It also adds code documentation explaining why mm_slot_lookup and mm_slot_insert must remain as preprocessor macros rather than static inline functions. - "mm/damon/core: hide core-private struct fields" (SJ Park) Clean up DAMON core structures by consistently marking internal-only fields with private: comment tags to prevent improper direct access from outer layers. It enforces encapsulation across core structures including damon_region, damon_target, and damon_ctx and updates DAMON_SYSFS to interact through approved access APIs instead of exposing raw struct members. - "mm/damon: unurgent fixes for infinite loop, NULL de-ref and races" (SJ Park) Address potential infinite loops, NULL dereferences, and race conditions identified in DAMON It fixes an infinite loop triggered by extreme user configurations, a NULL pointer dereference within unit tests and minor monitoring accuracy degradation caused by subtle runtime races. - "mm/page_alloc: fixes for free_pages_nolock() on RT/UP" (Brendan Jackman) Fix an NMI safety flaw in __free_frozen_pages() where freeing pages on non-SMP or PREEMPT_RT kernels can bypass can_spin_trylock() checks via non-PCP or isolated migration paths. It also resolves potential kernel crashes and privilege escalation risks triggered when BPF tracing runs in NMI context alongside memory hotplug or large allocation frees. - "mm/page_alloc: couple of followups for recent cleanups" (Brendan Jackman) Clean up and update page allocator nomenclature, documentation, and debug assertions. It aligns internal FPI_ flags with the public "nolock" naming convention, removes outdated internal implementation details from high-level page allocator comments, and eliminates obsolete VM_BUG_ON() assertions in allocation paths. - "mm/mseal: further cleanups" (Lorenzo Stoakes) Refactor and simplify the mseal implementation by clarifying API boundaries and removing unnecessary code complexity. It replaces generic do_mseal() usage outside the syscall with a dedicated mseal_mmap_page_zero() helper for MMAP_PAGE_ZERO, eliminates mm_struct parameters to enforce that sealing applies only to current->mm, and streamlines overall logic and comments with no functional changes intended. - "mm/vmscan: fix swappiness=max and clean up per-node proactive reclaim" (Ridong Chen) Resolve reclaim behavior bugs and clean up function parameters across memory reclaim paths It fixes swappiness=max in both standard reclaim and MGLRU so unswappable anonymous memory no longer falls back to evicting page cache, ensures reclaim_store() returns accurate error codes instead of collapsing all failures into -EAGAIN, and removes the obsolete gfp_mask parameter from __node_reclaim(). - "mm: mincore: misc cleanups" (Kefeng Wang) Clean up and simplifies the mincore code. Most importantly, it removes the historical special behavior that always reports VM_PFNMAP pages as non-resident. - "mm/huge_memory: drop dead split helper variants" (Kiryl Shutsemau) Two trivial cleanups in the folio split API - "mm/damon: fix uninitialized DAMOS field and kunit exec expectation bugs" (SJ Park) Resolve minor operational and testing bugs in DAMON identified by Sashiko. It initializes the damos->last_applied field to prevent occasional efficiency degradation and fixes invalid memory accesses in DAMON KUnit tests during test failure handling. - "cleanup for stable_page_flags()" (Jinjiang Tu) Clean up and refactor stable_page_flags() used by /proc/kpageflags without altering functionality. It uses BIT_ULL() to prevent shift-overflow warnings on 64-bit flag bits, converts folio-specific flag checks to standard folio_test_*() helpers, and removes redundant CONFIG_PAGE_IDLE_FLAG handling. - "Batch unmap of uffd-wp file folios" (Dev Jain) Extend batched folio unmapping support to file folios within userfaultfd write-protect (uffd-wp) VMAs by adding batching capabilities to pte_install_uffd_wp_if_needed(). This removes special-case restrictions on uffd-wp VMAs in try_to_unmap_one(), significantly simplifying the function's control flow and complexity. - "mm/early_ioremap: clarify and clean up early_ioremap_reset()" (Sang-Heon Jeon) Clarify and clean up the architecture-specific usage of __late_set_fixmap() and __late_clear_fixmap() after early_ioremap_reset() It adds explicit documentation regarding when early_ioremap_reset() must be called and removes redundant macro definitions and reset calls in the RISC-V and ARM64 architectures. - "mm: fix reclaim storms in defrag_mode" (Johannes Weiner) Address severe performance regressions, swap storms, and spurious OOMs caused by vm.defrag_mode=1 under high memory pressure in Meta production It updates the page allocator slowpath so non-movable allocation requests actively trigger direct reclaim and direct compaction at pageblock_order scale, allowing them to claim whole pageblocks rather than spinning unproductively. - "zram: lockmap tweaks" (Sebastian Siewior) Optimize and fix lockdep tracking for zram devices by consolidating per-entry lockmaps and isolate lock classes across multiple instances This reduces memory overhead by replacing per-entry lockdep_map instances with a single map per struct zram, and assigns a dynamic lock_class_key to each instance to prevent false deadlock reports when different zram devices are backed by distinct filesystems. * tag 'mm-stable-2026-08-18-18-39' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/akpm/mm: (501 commits) selftests/mm: thuge-gen: fix test_shmget() for PAGE_SIZE check selftests/mm: unpoison pages in memory-failure teardown mm/shmem: downgrade final i_blocks check in shmem_evict_inode() to pr_warn() mm/khugepaged: replace mutex_lock/mutex_unlock usage with guard macro mm/zsmalloc: fix release order of locks in zs_page_migrate() Documentation: zram: remove sections numbering ksm: stop iterating VMAs when ksm_test_exit returns true mm: fold userfaultfd_rwp() to false without CONFIG_ARCH_HAS_PTE_PROTNONE mm/migrate: report RCU-tasks quiescent states in migrate_pages_batch() zram: use a custom key for each zram object zram: move lockmap to be per-zram instead per table selftests/mm: fix gup_longterm EINVAL error message mm: page_alloc: fix non-movable reclaim storm in defrag_mode mm: page_alloc: move capture_control to the page allocator mm: compaction: support non-movable compaction for pageblock requests mm: page_alloc: __GFP_FS lockdep annotation for direct compaction hugetlb: evaluate subpool free state while locked mm/damon: remove trailing semicolons after function definitions mm/damon/ops-common: prevent migration fallback to non-target nodes mm/damon: update outdated comment about DAMOS filter handling ...
2026-08-17landlock: Document tracepointsMickaël Salaün
Until now, Landlock observability documentation covered only audit records. The tracepoints added by the previous commits introduce a second channel with different semantics (firing regardless of audit configuration and domain log flags, exposing the full ruleset and domain state to eBPF via BTF), which kernel developers, administrators, and userspace tool authors need to discover and compare against audit. Add a dedicated "Landlock Trace Events" reference covering the event categories, enabling events via tracefs, ruleset versioning, eBPF access through BPF_RAW_TRACEPOINT, and the same_exec and logged denial fields (logged being the kernel's audit-logging decision, so a stateless ftrace filter can select the denials audit would record with logged==1). Cross-reference it from the administrator, kernel-internals, and userspace API documents, contrasting tracepoints with audit: when each channel is preferred, what each guarantees, and how NOAUDIT hooks and audit rate limiting affect them. Also document the relational other-party domain fields the scope and ptrace denial tracepoints expose (tracee_domain, target_domain, peer_domain; 0 when the other party is unsandboxed), so a consumer can resolve them against the lifecycle events and reproduce the two-domain verdict. 2026-07-30media: rppx1: Add framework to support Dreamchip RPPX1 ISPNiklas Söderlund
Add a framework driver for Dreamchip RPPX1 ISP. The driver aims to provide a framework for other V4L2 based drivers to drive the RPPX1 functionality. The reason for this split is that the RPPX1 IP itself do not provide any DMA engines to drive data to/from the device, instead it depends on other IP blocks to implement these features. While the peripherals around the RPPX1 ISP used in different designs and by different vendors are different the RPPX1 core itself is the same. For this reason the framework solution to be able to split the Dreamchip RPPX1 driver from vendors usage of it have been picked in hope to reduce duplication of the common parts. The design is to try and keep the surface of this framework as small as possible. The intention of this change is to be able to fill all needs of this. * Two functions to create and destroy a RPPX1 instance, rppx1_create() and rppx1_destory(). These are intended to be called in the users probe and remove code paths. * Two functions to start and stop the RPPX1 processing, rppx1_start() and rppx1_stop(). These are intended to be called in the users stream on and stream off code paths. * One function to ask the RPPX1 to process parameters buffer prepared by user space, rppx1_params(). The intention is to call this function when the parameter buffer is queued to the V4L2 driver and the result stored by the driver until the time it needs to be written to the RPPX1. It's the users responsibility to write it either using MMIO or other means. * One function to fill in a statistic buffer based on the current status of the RPPX1, rppx1_stats_fill_isr(). The intention is that the user call's this in its interrupt handler when it knows the RPPX1 is done processing a frame. * One function to ack and retrieve the interrupts generated by the RPPX1, rppx1_interrupt(). The intention is to call this function when the users interrupt handler detects the RPPX1 have raised and interrupt. There is no need for the user to understand, or act, on the actual RPPX1 interrupt, but it can if it wants too. The initial support in the framework is limited and do not implement any ISP processing algorithms other then configuring the RPPX1 to process any Bayer (8-, 10, or 12-bit) image and produce either a RGB or YUYV output. It do however probe all function blocks of the RPPX1 and provide an interface to interact with both parameter and statistic bufferers. The user of the framework will not change as algorithms for the different function blocks of the ISP are being added. 2026-07-28media: v4l2-ctrls: Allow unknown HDR10 white point and luminanceMing Qian
SMPTE ST 2086 defines the nominal ranges for mastering display chromaticity and luminance values. Its Annex A also documents that CTA 861-G uses zero maximum and minimum luminance values to signal that the corresponding values are unknown, and the xy chromaticity coordinate (0, 0) to signal that the white point chromaticity is unknown. The V4L2 HDR10 mastering display compound control currently rejects these values. Consequently, an unknown white point or luminance value prevents the entire compound control from being updated, making the other valid mastering display metadata unavailable to userspace. Accept (0, 0) as an unknown white point and zero as an unknown maximum or minimum mastering luminance. Continue to reject partially zero white point coordinates and non-zero values outside the nominal ranges. Display primary validation remains unchanged. Document the newly accepted unknown values in the V4L2 userspace API. We need to selectively skip reporting of the standard TCP Timestamp option, because they won't fit into the header space together (12 + 30 > 40). - Support using bridge neighbor suppression, Duplicate Address Detection, Gratuitous ARP and unsolicited NA forwarding - in EVPN deployments, e.g. VXLAN fabrics (IPv4 and IPv6). - Improve link state reporting for upper netdevs (e.g. macvlan) over tunnel devices (again, mostly for EVPN deployments). - Support binding GENEVE tunnels to a local address. - Speed up UDP tunnel destruction (remove one synchronize_rcu()). - Support exponential field encoding in multicast (IGMPv3 and MLDv2). - Support attaching PSP crypto offload to containers (veth, netkit). - Add a new IPSec Netlink message XFRM_MSG_MIGRATE_STATE that allows migrating individual IPsec SAs independently of their policies. The existing XFRM_MSG_MIGRATE is tightly coupled to policy+SA migration, lacks SPI for unique SA identification, and cannot express reqid changes or migrate Transport mode selectors. The new interface identifies the SA via SPI and mark, supports reqid changes, address family changes, encap removal, and uses an atomic create+install flow under x->lock to prevent SN/IV reuse during AEAD SA migration. - Implement GRO/GSO support for PPPoE. - Convert sockopt callbacks in a number of protocols to iov_iter. Cross-tree stuff: - Remove support for Crypto TFM cloning (unblocked after the TCP Auth Option rework). This feature regressed performance for all crypto API users, since it changed crypto transformation objects into reference-counted objects. - Add FCrypt-PCBC implementation to rxrpc and remove it from the global crypto API as obsolete and insecure. Wireless: - Major rework of station bandwidth handling, fixing issues with lower capability than AP. - Cleanups for EMLSR spec issues (drafts differed). - More Neighbor Awareness Networking (Wi-Fi Aware) work (multicast, schedule improvements, multi-station etc.) - Some Ultra High Reliability (UHR) / IEEE 802.11bn (D1.4) work (e.g. non-primary channel access, UHR DBE support). - Fine Timing Measurement ranging (i.e. distance measurement) APIs. Netfilter: - Use per-rule hash initval in nf_conncount. This avoids unnecessary lock contention with short keys (e.g. conntrack zones) in different namespaces. - Various safety improvements, both in packet parsing and object lifetimes. Notably add refcounts to conntrack timeout policy. Deletions: - Remove TLS + sockmap integration. TLS wants to pin user pages to avoid a copy, and sockmap wants to write to the input stream. More work on this integration is clearly needed, and we can't find any users (original author admitted that they never deployed it). - Remove support for TLS offload with TCP Offload Engine (the far more common opportunistic offload is retained). The locking looks unfixable (driver sleeps under TCP spin locks) and people from the vendor that added this are AWOL. - Remove more ATM code, trying to leave behind only what PPPoATM needs, AAL5 and br2684 with permanent circuits. - Remove AppleTalk. Let it join hamradio in our out of tree protocol graveyard, I mean, repository. - Disable 32-bit x_tables compatibility (32bit binaries on 64bit kernel) interface in user namespaces. To be deleted completely, soon. - Remove 5/10 MHz support from cfg80211/mac80211. 2026-06-14landlock: Add API support and docs for the quiet flagsTingmao Wang
Adds the UAPI for the quiet flags feature (but not the implementation yet). Even though currently LANDLOCK_ADD_RULE_QUIET only affects audit logging, in the future this can also be used as part of a supervisor mechanism, where it will also suppress denial notifications on a per-object basis. Thus the name is deliberately generic, as opposed to e.g. LANDLOCK_ADD_RULE_LOG_QUIET. According to pahole, even after adding the struct access_masks quiet_masks in struct landlock_hierarchy, the u32 log_* bitfield still only has a size of 2 bytes, so there's minimal wasted space. 2026-06-14landlock: Add documentation for UDP supportMatthieu Buffet
Add example of UDP usage, without detailing the two access right. Slightly change the example used in code blocks: build a ruleset for a DNS client, so that it uses both TCP and UDP. Test coverage for security/landlock is 91.3% of 2245 lines according to LLVM 22. 2026-06-13landlock: Demonstrate best-effort allowed_access filteringMickaël Salaün
Landlock provides best-effort sandboxing across ABI versions: applications request the rights they need, and on older kernels the unsupported rights are silently dropped from handled_access_* by the documented compatibility switch. The recommended pattern for landlock_add_rule(2) calls is to mirror this filtering at the rule level, which wasn't explicitly described in the exemple. Show the pattern explicitly in the filesystem and network rule examples by masking each rule's allowed_access against the ruleset's handled_access_* and adding the rule only when at least one bit remains set. This makes the recommended best-effort pattern self-documenting. 2026-05-23char: dtlk: remove driver for ISA speech synthesizer cardEthan Nelson-Moore
The dtlk driver supports the RC Systems DoubleTalk PC ISA speech synthesizer card. It has severe coding style issues and has only received tree-wide fixes and drive-by cleanups in the entire Git history (since Linux 2.6.12-rc2). The same hardware is supported by drivers/accessibility/speakup for screen reader use, but that implementation does not share any code with this driver. Given all of these factors, it is likely the driver is entirely unused. Remove it to reduce future maintenance workload. Note: The removed maintainer is already listed in CREDITS. 2026-05-22crypto: qat - remove unused character device and IOCTLsGiovanni Cabiddu
The QAT driver exposes a character device (qat_adf_ctl) with IOCTLs for device configuration, start, stop, status query and enumeration. These IOCTLs are not part of any public uAPI header and have no known in-tree or out-of-tree users. Device lifecycle is already managed via sysfs. The ioctl interface also increases the attack surface and is the subject of a number of bug reports. Remove the character device, the IOCTL definitions, and the related data structures (adf_dev_status_info, adf_user_cfg_key_val, adf_user_cfg_section, adf_user_cfg_ctl_data). Drop the now-unused adf_cfg_user.h header and strip adf_ctl_drv.c down to the minimal module_init/module_exit hooks for workqueue, AER, and crypto/compression algorithm registration. Clean up leftover dead code that was only reachable from the removed IOCTL paths: adf_cfg_del_all(), adf_devmgr_verify_id(), adf_devmgr_get_num_dev(), adf_devmgr_get_dev_by_id(), adf_get_vf_real_id() and the unused ADF_CFG macros. Additionally, drop the entry associated to QAT IOCTLs in ioctl-number.rst.
