3 daysselftests/damon: add script dir to sys.path for PYTHONSAFEPATH compatibilityEva Kurchatova
Running these tests under Python's safe path mode, either with -P on the interpreter command line or with PYTHONSAFEPATH set in the environment, stops the script's own directory being prepended to sys.path. Some distributions (RHEL, for example) build the tests with -P in the shebang. This breaks all 7 DAMON Python selftests that import the _damon_sysfs helper module located in the same directory: ModuleNotFoundError: No module named '_damon_sysfs' Fix this by explicitly adding the script's directory to sys.path before importing _damon_sysfs, following the same pattern used in commit c3b3eb565bd7 ("tools: ynl: add script dir to sys.path") which fixed the identical issue for the YNL tools. 3 daysselftests/damon: stop kdamond on error exits of no-op commit testZenghui Yu (Huawei)
Patch series "mm/damon: misc improvements in tests and documents". Add various improvements to DAMON tests and documents. Patch 1 and 2 from Zenghui Yu (Huawei) let DAMON selftest to clean up its state and output after running the tests. Patch 3 from Eva Kurchatova makes a few selftest be able to run with Python's safe path mode. Patch 4 from Kunwu Chan improves coverage of DAMON kunit tests. Finally, patches 5 and 6 from Liew Rui Yan clarify and fix typos on documents for DAMOS quota behaviors. Below are notes that can be removed in the final commit message. This is a batched repost of DAMON patches that were individually posted. Please refer to each patch for changelog. This patch (of 6): The sysfs_no_op_commit_break test starts a kdamond via sysfs, but its error paths (e.g., drgn not installed) exit without stopping it. The leaked kdamond then makes subsequent tests, e.g. lru_sort.sh and reclaim.sh, skip with "Another kdamond is running". Wrap the post-start logic in try-finally so that kdamonds.stop() is executed on every exit path. 9 daysselftests/damon: prevent remaining cross-object state pollutionzhaozhengzhuo
_damon_sysfs.py defines constructors with mutable default arguments, including DamosAccessPattern(), DamosQuota(), DamosWatermarks(), DamosDests(), IntervalsGoal(), and empty lists. Default arguments are evaluated once at function definition time. Damos() instances created without explicit arguments therefore share the same DamosQuota(), and the other default-constructed sub-objects and lists are shared in the same way. The sub-objects keep back-pointers to their owner scheme, so constructing the second Damos() rebinds the shared quota's scheme pointer to the second object. An item appended to one object's default contexts or filters list is also visible from other default-constructed objects. The shared state can corrupt test configurations. DamosQuota.sysfs_dir() derives the sysfs directory from its scheme pointer, so operating on the first scheme's default quota may write to the second scheme's directory. The wrong values often match the defaults, so tests still pass, but the behavior depends on object creation order. Commit 8319dadcbd81 ("selftests/damon: prevent cross-context state pollution in DamonCtx") fixed the same pattern in DamonCtx only. Fix the remaining constructors by defaulting to None and creating fresh objects or lists inside each constructor. Explicit arguments keep their previous behavior. 9 daysselftests/damon/sysfs.py: clean up sh processes used for obsolete_target testHari Mishal
The obsolete_target test spawns three sh processes and uses their pids as DAMON monitoring targets. These processes are never terminated or waited on, so they are left running (or become zombies) as orphaned children after the test program exits. Terminate each process and communicate() with it after the targets are no longer needed, so it exits and gets reaped instead of being leaked. 2026-08-04selftests/damon: check correct path in ensure_file() not_exist casewang wei
In the ensure_file() function, the "not_exist" code path checks whether $dir exists as a regular file. However, the intent is to verify that the target file ($file) does not exist, not the $dir. Testing $dir makes the existence check effectively useless -- it tests the wrong path and thus never catches the case where the file is unexpectedly present. Replace $dir with $file so the not_exist verification targets the correct path. 2026-07-28selftests/damon/sysfs_refresh: test kdamond refresh_msRuslan Valiyev
Writing a non-zero value to a kdamond's 'refresh_ms' sysfs file should make DAMON periodically update the read-only sysfs files on its own, without the user writing update keywords such as 'update_schemes_stats' to the 'state' file. This behavior has no test coverage. Add a test that starts a kdamond with refresh_ms set and a 'stat' scheme whose default access pattern matches every monitored region, then polls the scheme's 'nr_tried' stats file directly, without requesting an update. The value can become non-zero only via the periodic refresh, so the test confirms refresh_ms works; with refresh_ms disabled the stat stays zero and the test fails. 2026-07-28selftests/damon/_damon_sysfs: support kdamond refresh_msRuslan Valiyev
Patch series "selftests/damon: test kdamond refresh_ms", v2. The kdamond 'refresh_ms' sysfs file makes DAMON periodically update its read-only sysfs files (DAMOS stats, tuned monitoring intervals and the kdamond pid) on its own, so users don't have to write update keywords such as 'update_schemes_stats' to the 'state' file. It has no selftest coverage. The first patch adds refresh_ms support to the _damon_sysfs.py test control module. The second adds a test that sets refresh_ms and confirms a scheme's stats are updated under sysfs without an explicit update request; the test skips on kernels that predate the refresh_ms file. Tested on current mainline under a DAMON-enabled kernel: the new test passes and the existing DAMON selftests show no new failures. This patch (of 2): The Kdamond class has no way to set the kdamond-level 'refresh_ms' sysfs file, which makes DAMON periodically update the read-only sysfs files (DAMOS stats, tuned monitoring intervals and the kdamond pid) on its own. Add a 'refresh_ms' parameter to Kdamond. When it is set (including to zero, to disable the periodic update), write it before turning the kdamond on, so tests can exercise the auto-update behavior. Leaving it unset keeps the previous behavior of not touching the file, so callers running against kernels without the feature are unaffected. Patch series "selftests/damon: fix memcg_path staging handling", v5. Fix a bug in _damon_sysfs.py for damos_filter memcg_path setup, and add a test case of it in sysfs.py. 2026-07-28selftests/damon/damos_tried_regions: fix expectation output and join TypeErrorKunwu Chan
The expectation print has wrong operator precedence: '%' binds before the conditional expression, so the else branch prints 'not met' without the prefix 'expectation (>= 14) is'. 2026-07-28selftests/damon: prevent cross-context state pollution in DamonCtxKunwu Chan
Patch series "selftests/damon: misc fixes for test bugs", v3. This series fixes several bugs in the DAMON selftests. Most are trivial but makes test output wrong or even silently pass the one test case for 'avail_operation' file existence check. Patch 1 fixes mutable default arguments in DamonCtx.__init__() that cause state to leak between test instances. Patch 2 fixes wrong operator precedence and join TypeError in damos_tried_regions.py. Patch 3 fixes several wrong strings that produce dead elif branches, skipped file existence checks, and broken dict key lookups. This patch (of 3): DamonCtx.__init__() uses mutable default values for monitoring_attrs, targets, and schemes. In Python these are evaluated once at function definition time, so multiple DamonCtx instances can unintentionally share the same lists and DamonAttrs instance. Replace the mutable defaults with None sentinels and initialize the objects when needed. When an assertion is failed, sysfs.py DAMON selftest immediately exits the test program leaving the DAMON running behind. Many of the following tests need to start DAMON on their own. 2026-05-28selftests/damon/sysfs.py: pause DAMON before dumping statusSeongJae Park
The sysfs.py test commits DAMON parameters, dump the internal DAMON state, and show if the parameters are committed as expected using the dumped state. While the dumping is ongoing, DAMON is alive. It can make internal changes including addition and removal of regions. It can therefore make a race that can result in false test results. Pause DAMON execution during the state dumping to avoid such races. 2026-05-28mm/damon: support MADV_COLLAPSE via DAMOS_COLLAPSE scheme actionAsier Gutierrez
This patch set introces a new action: DAMOS_COLLAPSE. For DAMOS_HUGEPAGE and DAMOS_NOHUGEPAGE to work, khugepaged should be working, since it relies on hugepage_madvise to add a new slot. This slot should be picked up by khugepaged and eventually collapse (or not, if we are using DAMOS_NOHUGEPAGE) the pages. If THP is not enabled, khugepaged will not be working, and therefore no collapse will happen. DAMOS_COLLAPSE eventually calls madvise_collapse, which will collapse the address range synchronously. In cases where there is a large VMA (databases, for example), DAMOS_COLLAPSE allows us to collapse only the hot region, and not the entire VMA. This new action may be required to support autotuning with hugepage as a goal[1]. ========= Benchmarks: ========= MySQL ===== Tests were performed in an ARM physical server with MariaDB 10.5 and sysbench. "collapse" action works even when THP is set to never. - Performance for "collapse" action is slightly lower than "hugepage" action and THP madvise. This is due to the fact that collapases occur synchronously. With "hugepage" they may occur during page faults. - Memory consumption is slighly lower for "collapse" than "hugepage" with THP madvise. This is due to the khugepage collapses all VMAs, while "collapse" action only collapses the VMAs in the hot region. - There is an improvement in TLB utilization when collapse through "hugepage" or "collapse" actions are triggered. The amount of TLB misses is lower. - "collapse" action is performance synchronously, which means that page collapses happen earlier and more rapidly. This can be useful or not, depending on the scenario. - "hugepage" action may trigger a VMA split in some scenarios, since it needs to change the flag of the VMA to THP enabled. This may lead to additional overhead. Collapse action just adds a new option to chose the correct system balance. 2026-01-31selftests/damon/wss_estimation: deduplicate failed samples outputSeongJae Park
When the test fails, it shows whole sampled working set size measurements. The purpose is showing the distribution of the measured values, to let the tester know if it was just intermittent failure. Multiple same values on the output are therefore unnecessary. It was not a big deal since the test was failing only once in the past. But the test can now fail multiple times with increased working set size, until it passes or the working set size reaches a limit. Hence the noisy output can be quite long and annoying. Print only the deduplicated distribution information. 2026-01-31selftests/damon/wss_estimation: ensure number of collected wssSeongJae Park
DAMON selftest for working set size estimation collects DAMON's working set size measurements of the running artificial memory access generator program until the program is finished. Depending on how quickly the program finishes, and how quickly DAMON starts, the number of collected working set size measurements may vary, and make the test results unreliable. Ensure it collects 40 measurements by using the repeat mode of the artificial memory access generator program, and finish the measurements only after the desired number of collections are made. 2026-01-31selftests/damon/access_memory: add repeat modeSeongJae Park
'access_memory' is an artificial memory access generator program that is used for a few DAMON selftests. It accesses a given number of regions one by one only once, and exits. Depending on systems, the test workload may exit faster than expected, making the tests unreliable. For reliable control of the artificial memory access pattern, add a mode to make it repeat running. 2026-01-31selftests/damon/wss_estimation: test for up to 160 MiB working set sizeSeongJae Park
DAMON reads and writes Accessed bits of page tables without manual TLB flush for two reasons. First, it minimizes the overhead. Second, real systems that need DAMON are expected to be memory intensive enough to cause periodic TLB flushes. For test setups that use small test workloads, however, the system's TLB could be big enough to cover whole or most accesses of the test workload. In this case, no page table walk happens and DAMON cannot show any access from the test workload. The test workload for DAMON's working set size estimation selftest is such a case. It accesses only 10 MiB working set, and it turned out there are test setups that have TLBs large enough to cover the 10 MiB data accesses. As a result, the test fails depending on the test machine. Make it more reliable by trying larger working sets up to 160 MiB when it fails. 2026-01-31selftests/damon/sysfs_memcg_path_leak.sh: use kmemleakSeongJae Park
Patch series "selftests/damon: improve leak detection and wss estimation reliability". Two DAMON selftets, namely 'sysfs_memcg_leak' and 'sysfs_update_schemes_tried_regions_wss_estimation' frequently show intermittent failures due to their unreliable leak detection and working set size estimation. Make those more reliable. This patch (of 5): sysfs_memcg_path_leak.sh determines if the memory leak has happened by seeing if Slab size on /proc/meminfo increases more than expected after an action. Depending on the system and background workloads, the reasonable expectation varies. For the reason, the test frequently shows intermittent failures. Use kmemleak, which is much more reliable and correct, instead. 2025-11-20selftests/damon/sysfs.py: merge DAMON status dumping into commitment assertionSeongJae Park
For each test case, sysfs.py makes changes to DAMON, dumps DAMON internal status and asserts the expectation is met. The dumping part should be the same for all cases, so it is duplicated for each test case. Which means it is easy to make mistakes. Actually a few of those duplicates are not turning DAMON off in case of the dumping failure. It makes following selftests that need to turn DAMON on fails with -EBUSY. Merge the status dumping into commitment assertion with proper dumping failure handling, to deduplicate and avoid the unnecessary following tests failures. 2025-11-20mm/damon: rename damos->filters to damos->core_filtersSeongJae Park
DAMOS filters that are handled by the ops layer are linked to damos->ops_filters. Owing to the ops_ prefix on the name, it is easy to understand it is for ops layer handled filters. The other types of filters, which are handled by the core layer, are linked to damos->filters. Because of the name, it is easy to confuse the list is there for not only core layer handled ones but all filters. Avoid such confusions by renaming the field to core_filters.
