bpftool prog tracelog -w ends from its SIGINT, SIGHUP and SIGTERM handler,
which calls exit(). exit() is not async-signal-safe: it runs atexit
handlers and flushes stdio streams, and the signal may land while the read
loop is inside fwrite() or fflush() on the stream being flushed. Whether
that deadlocks or flushes a half-updated buffer depends on the C library.
Call _exit() instead. The loop flushes every chunk as soon as it is
printed, so the stdio buffer is empty except while a chunk is being
written, and skipping the exit-time flush loses nothing.
While here, note in the manual page that opening a stream as a file
descriptor arrives in Linux 7.4, and restrict the -w/--wait description to
the stdout/stderr form of the tracelog command, since the trace pipe form
does not take the option.

bpftool prog tracelog { stdout | stderr } PROG dumps the output buffered
in a program stream and exits, which is all BPF_PROG_STREAM_READ_BY_FD
allows. Waiting for further output means rerunning the command.
Add a -w/--wait option that opens the stream with bpf_prog_stream_open()
in its default blocking mode and keeps printing output as the program
produces it. Flush each chunk as it arrives so redirected output is not
held in stdio buffers while the next read blocks. Waiting is opt-in: the
default dump keeps using BPF_PROG_STREAM_READ_BY_FD and exits once the
buffered output is drained, so existing scripts behave the same on old and
new kernels.
A stream descriptor does not keep its program alive, so bpftool drops the
program descriptor once the stream is open. Waiting then ends with EOF
when the program is unloaded and otherwise runs until interrupted, as
bpftool prog tracelog already does for the trace pipe. Exit from the
SIGINT, SIGHUP and SIGTERM handlers like that command does. A flag set by
the handler and checked before each read would miss a signal that lands
between the check and the blocking read(), leaving bpftool asleep until the
next print.
Waiting requires BPF_PROG_STREAM_OPEN. The bpf() syscall fails with EINVAL
for an unknown command, which bpftool reports as missing kernel support
rather than degrading into a dump. Document the option and offer it in the
bash completion.

Commit 4b82b181a26c ("bpf: Allow pre-ordering for bpf cgroup progs")
introduced BPF_F_PREORDER to request pre-order execution across the
cgroup hierarchy. Furthermore, attachments legitimately use combinations
such as BPF_F_ALLOW_MULTI | BPF_F_PREORDER or
BPF_F_ALLOW_OVERRIDE | BPF_F_PREORDER.
With BPF_PROG_QUERY reporting the per-program BPF_F_PREORDER attribute,
bpftool's exact-match formatter falls back to "unknown(40)" when
BPF_F_PREORDER is present alone, or "unknown(41)" / "unknown(42)" when
combined with BPF_F_ALLOW_OVERRIDE or BPF_F_ALLOW_MULTI. Additionally,
do_attach() only accepts "multi" and "override", rejecting "preorder"
with "unknown option".
Before:
$ bpftool cgroup show <cg>
1234 cgroup_inet_ingress unknown(42) test_prog
$ bpftool cgroup attach <cg> cgroup_inet_ingress id 5678 multi preorder
Error: unknown option: preorder
After:
$ bpftool cgroup show <cg>
1234 cgroup_inet_ingress multi,preorder test_prog
$ bpftool cgroup attach <cg> cgroup_inet_ingress id 5678 multi preorder
(attaches successfully)
Refactor the attach flags formatter into a bitmask formatter that outputs
comma-separated flag names for plain text while preserving unrecognized
bits as "unknown(...)". Render attach flags as an array of flag names in
JSON output. Accept "preorder" in do_attach(), update the cgroup
documentation and synopsis to express valid flag combinations, and teach
bash completion about them ("multi" or "override" optionally combined
with "preorder").

map event_pipe only accepts perf event arrays, leaving no built-in way
to inspect records produced through the BPF ring buffer API. Extend it
to consume queued and live BPF_MAP_TYPE_RINGBUF records in plain or
JSON output, retaining the existing perf event array path.
Ring buffers have a shared consumer position and no implicit CPU or
timestamp. Document that this command consumes records rather than
observing them passively, and reject perf-only CPU/index selectors.
A producer can keep ring_buffer__poll() busy after a stop signal, so
return -EINTR from the record callback when stopping. Keep stdio out of
the shared signal handler and preserve callback output errors.

Add support for specifying multiple file sources in 'bpftool btf dump'
to generate a single C header containing types from vmlinux plus
multiple kernel modules:
bpftool btf dump file /sys/kernel/btf/mod1 file /sys/kernel/btf/mod2 format c
This is useful for BPF programs that need to access types defined in
kernel modules. Previously this required a separate bpftool invocation
for each module, producing separate headers that could not be combined
due to overlapping vmlinux type definitions.
The implementation collects all file paths, then for the multi-file
case creates an empty split BTF on the vmlinux base and iteratively
merges each module's types into it via btf__add_btf(). The single-file
code path is preserved exactly to avoid any regression risk.
Auto-detection of vmlinux as the base BTF from sysfs paths works as
before. If vmlinux itself appears in the file list it is skipped with
a warning since its types are already provided by the base.

Add support for the 'prepend' option when attaching tcx_ingress and
tcx_egress programs. This option allows inserting a BPF program at
the beginning of the TCX chain instead of appending it at the end.
The implementation uses BPF_F_BEFORE flag which automatically inserts
the program at the beginning of the chain when no relative reference
is specified.
This change includes:
- Modify do_attach_tcx() to support prepend insertion using BPF_F_BEFORE
- Update documentation to describe the new 'prepend' option
- Add bash completion support for the 'prepend' option on tcx attach types
- Add example usage in the documentation
- Add validation to reject 'overwrite' for non-XDP attach types
The 'prepend' option is only valid for tcx_ingress and tcx_egress attach
types. For XDP attach types, the existing 'overwrite' option remains
available.
Example usage:
# bpftool net attach tcx_ingress name tc_prog dev lo prepend
This feature is useful when the order of program execution in the TCX
chain matters and users need to ensure certain programs run first.

Two modes of operation being added:
Add two modes of operation:
* For prog load, allow signing a program immediately before loading. This
is essential for command-line testing and administration.
bpftool prog load -S -k <private_key> -i <identity_cert> fentry_test.bpf.o
* For gen skeleton, embed a pre-generated signature into the C skeleton
file. This supports the use of signed programs in compiled applications.
bpftool gen skeleton -S -k <private_key> -i <identity_cert> fentry_test.bpf.o
Generation of the loader program and its metadata map is implemented in
libbpf (bpf_obj__gen_loader). bpftool generates a skeleton that loads
the program and automates the required steps: freezing the map, creating
an exclusive map, loading, and running. Users can use standard libbpf
APIs directly or integrate loader program generation into their own
toolchains.

Add support for printing the BPF stream contents of a program in
bpftool. The new bpftool prog tracelog command is extended to take
stdout and stderr arguments, and then the prog specification.
The bpf_prog_stream_read() API added in previous patch is simply reused
to grab data and then it is dumped to the respective file. The stdout
data is sent to stdout, and stderr is printed to stderr.

Some projects, for example xdp-tools [0], prefer to check in a minimized
vmlinux.h rather than the complete file which can get rather large.
However, when you try to add a minimized version of a complex struct (eg
struct xfrm_state), things can get quite complex if you're trying to
manually untangle and deduplicate the dependencies.
This commit teaches bpftool to do a minimized dump of a specific types by
providing a optional root_id argument(s).
Example usage:
$ ./bpftool btf dump file ~/dev/linux/vmlinux | rg "STRUCT 'xfrm_state'"

$ ./bpftool btf dump file ~/dev/linux/vmlinux root_id 12643 format c

Sort bpftool c dump output; aiming to simplify vmlinux.h diffing and
forcing more natural type definitions ordering.
Definitions are sorted first by their BTF kind ranks, then by their base
type name and by their own name.
Type ranks
Assign ranks to btf kinds (defined in function btf_type_rank) to set
next order:
1. Anonymous enums/enums64
2. Named enums/enums64
3. Trivial types typedefs (ints, then floats)
4. Structs/Unions
5. Function prototypes
6. Forward declarations
Type rank is set to maximum for unnamed reference types, structs and
unions to avoid emitting those types early. They will be emitted as
part of the type chain starting with named type.
Lexicographical ordering
Each type is assigned a sort_name and own_name.
sort_name is the resolved name of the final base type for reference
types (typedef, pointer, array etc). Sorting by sort_name allows to
group typedefs of the same base type. sort_name for non-reference type
is the same as own_name. own_name is a direct name of particular type,
is used as final sorting step.

When using references to BPF programs, bpftool supports passing programs
by name on the command line. The manual pages for "bpftool prog" and
"bpftool map" (for prog_array updates) mention it, but we have a few
additional subcommands that support referencing programs by name but do
not mention it in their documentation. Let's update the pages for
subcommands "btf", "cgroup", and "net".
Similarly, we can reference maps by name when passing them to "bpftool

The rST manual pages for bpftool would use a mix of tabs and spaces for
indentation. While this is the norm in C code, this is rather unusual
for rST documents, and over time we've seen many contributors use a
wrong level of indentation for documentation update.
Let's fix bpftool's indentation in docs once and for all:
- Let's use spaces, that are more common in rST files.
- Remove one level of indentation for the synopsis, the command
description, and the "see also" section. As a result, all sections
start with the same indentation level in the generated man page.
- Rewrap the paragraphs after the changes.
There is no content change in this patch, only indentation and
rewrapping changes. The wrapping in the generated source files for the

Add ability to specify a network interface used to resolve XDP hints
kfuncs when loading program through bpftool.
Usage:
bpftool prog load [...] xdpmeta_dev <ifname>
Writing just 'dev <ifname>' instead of 'xdpmeta_dev' is a very probable
mistake that results in not very descriptive errors,
so 'bpftool prog load [...] dev <ifname>' syntax becomes deprecated,
followed by 'bpftool map create [...] dev <ifname>' for consistency.
Now, to offload program, execute:
bpftool prog load [...] offload_dev <ifname>
To offload map:
bpftool map create [...] offload_dev <ifname>
'dev <ifname>' still performs offloading in the commands above, but now
triggers a warning and is excluded from bash completion.
'xdpmeta_dev' and 'offload_dev' are mutually exclusive options, because
'xdpmeta_dev' basically makes a program device-bound without loading it
onto the said device. For now, offloaded programs cannot use XDP hints [0],
but if this changes, using 'offload_dev <ifname>' should cover this case.

When dumping a program, the keywords "opcodes" (for printing the raw
opcodes), "linum" (for displaying the filename, line number, column
number along with the source code), and "visual" (for generating the
control flow graph for translated programs) are mutually exclusive. But
there's no reason why they should be. Let's make it possible to pass
several of them at once. The "file FILE" option, which makes bpftool
output a binary image to a file, remains incompatible with the others.

The documentation states that when line_info is available when dumping a
program, the source line will be displayed "by default". There is no
notion of "default" here: the line is always displayed if available,
there is no way currently to turn it off.
In the next sentence, the documentation states that if "linum" is used
on the command line, the relevant filename, line, and column will be
displayed "on top of the source line". This is incorrect, as they are
currently displayed on the right side of the source line (or on top of
the eBPF instruction, not the source).
This commit fixes the documentation to address these points.

We want to support a ringbuf map type where samples are published from
user-space, to be consumed by BPF programs. BPF currently supports a
kernel -> user-space circular ring buffer via the BPF_MAP_TYPE_RINGBUF
map type. We'll need to define a new map type for user-space -> kernel,
as none of the helpers exported for BPF_MAP_TYPE_RINGBUF will apply
to a user-space producer ring buffer, and we'll want to add one or
more helper functions that would not apply for a kernel-producer
ring buffer.
This patch therefore adds a new BPF_MAP_TYPE_USER_RINGBUF map type
definition. The map type is useless in its current form, as there is no
way to access or use it for anything until we one or more BPF helpers. A
follow-on patch will therefore add a new helper function that allows BPF
programs to run callbacks on samples that are published to the ring
buffer.

To make it more explicit that the features listed with "bpftool feature
list" are known to bpftool, but not necessary available on the system
(as opposed to the probed features), rename the "feature list" command
into "feature list_builtins".
Note that "bpftool feature list" still works as before given that we
recognise arguments from their prefixes; but the real name of the
subcommand, in particular as displayed in the man page or the
interactive help, will now include "_builtins".
Since we update the bash completion accordingly, let's also take this
chance to redirect error output to /dev/null in the completion script,
to avoid displaying unexpected error messages when users attempt to
tab-complete.

Add a "bpftool feature list" subcommand to list BPF "features".
Contrarily to "bpftool feature probe", this is not about the features
available on the system. Instead, it lists all features known to bpftool
from compilation time; in other words, all program, map, attach, link
types known to the libbpf version in use, and all helpers found in the
UAPI BPF header.
The first use case for this feature is bash completion: running the
command provides a list of types that can be used to produce the list of
candidate map types, for example.
Now that bpftool uses "standard" names provided by libbpf for the
program, map, link, and attach types, having the ability to list these
types and helpers could also be useful in scripts to loop over existing
items.
Sample output:
# bpftool feature list prog_types | grep -vw unspec | head -n 6
socket_filter
kprobe
sched_cls
sched_act
tracepoint
xdp
# bpftool -p feature list map_types | jq '.[1]'
"hash"
# bpftool feature list attach_types | grep '^cgroup_'
cgroup_inet_ingress
cgroup_inet_egress
[...]
cgroup_inet_sock_release
# bpftool feature list helpers | grep -vw bpf_unspec | wc -l
207
The "unspec" types and helpers are not filtered out by bpftool, so as to
remain closer to the enums, and to preserve the indices in the JSON
arrays (e.g. "hash" at index 1 == BPF_MAP_TYPE_HASH in map types list).

This change switches bpftool over to using the recently introduced
libbpf_bpf_attach_type_str function instead of maintaining its own
string representation for the bpf_attach_type enum.
Note that contrary to other enum types, the variant names that bpftool
maps bpf_attach_type to do not adhere a simple to follow rule. With
bpf_prog_type, for example, the textual representation can easily be
inferred by stripping the BPF_PROG_TYPE_ prefix and lowercasing the
remaining string. bpf_attach_type violates this rule for various
variants.
We decided to fix up this deficiency with this change, meaning that
bpftool uses the same textual representations as libbpf. Supporting
tests, completion scripts, and man pages have been adjusted accordingly.
However, we did add support for accepting (the now undocumented)
original attach type names when they are provided by users.
For the test (test_bpftool_synctypes.py), I have removed the enum
representation checks, because we no longer mirror the various enum
variant names in bpftool source code. For the man page, help text, and
completion script checks we are now using enum definitions from
uapi/linux/bpf.h as the source of truth directly.

Subskeletons are headers which require an already loaded program to
operate.
For example, when a BPF library is linked into a larger BPF object file,
the library userspace needs a way to access its own global variables
without requiring knowledge about the larger program at build time.
As a result, subskeletons require a loaded bpf_object to open().
Further, they find their own symbols in the larger program by
walking BTF type data at run time.
At this time, programs, maps, and globals are supported through
non-owning pointers.
