The emux voice caches the soundfont zone pointer in vp->zone, which
is referred to later, e.g. in snd_emux_send_effect(). For avoiding
dangling pointers, the soundfont code calls the sample_reset callback
to stop all voices before freeing zones. However, in a few cases
(e.g. emu10k1's missing sample_reset or the call path via
remove_info()), the sample reset isn't called properly, leaving the
playing voices.
Fix it by always registering the sample_reset callback, falling back
to snd_emux_terminate_all() when the driver has no own ops, and by
calling sample_reset in remove_info() before freeing the zones.

snd_emux_note_on() looks up the matching zones via
snd_soundfont_search_zone(), which takes sflist->lock only during the
lookup and returns the raw zone pointers after releasing it. The
caller then stores them in vp->zone without any protection.
Meanwhile, a concurrent SNDRV_EMUX_IOCTL_REMOVE_LAST_SAMPLES ioctl may
unlink and free those zones in snd_soundfont_remove_unlocked(); this
leads to a use-after-free in snd_emux_note_on(), and later at
accessing the cached vp->zone, e.g. in snd_emux_send_effect().
Fix it by holding sflist->lock in snd_emux_note_on() over the whole
zone lookup and voice setup, and let snd_soundfont_search_zone()
require the caller to hold the lock, instead.
snd_soundfont_lock_preset() takes sflist->lock for setting
presets_locked, so the removal path now syncs with the note-on finish.

The OSS argument must be non-NULL before reset_port_mode() writes its
event_passing field. snd_emux_open_seq_oss() assigns p->oss_arg only
after snd_emux_create_port() attaches the writable sequencer port, so
this field is still NULL when the callback first becomes reachable.
With sequencer OSS and an EMUX provider enabled, another sequencer
client can learn the new address from a PORT_START announcement and
send a direct SNDRV_SEQ_EVENT_OSS channel-mode command, with marker
0xfe and command byte 0x8a. The following ordering is possible:
OSS opener Sequencer writer
snd_emux_create_port()
snd_seq_event_port_attach()
publish port, announce
receive PORT_START
snd_seq_write()
snd_emux_event_oss_input()
reset_port_mode()
write via NULL oss_arg
p->oss_arg = arg
The callback's write precedes the opener's assignment. The core's port
reference keeps the private data allocated but does not wait for its
initialization. The write therefore dereferences NULL and can panic the
kernel, as shown by the report below.
Take a single READ_ONCE() snapshot of oss_arg and update event_passing
only when that snapshot is non-NULL. Pair it with WRITE_ONCE() in the
open path, so the check and write use the same pointer despite
concurrent initialization. The open path still sets the initial mode
after assigning the argument, and subsequent channel-mode events retain
their existing handling.

Store MIDI channel entries in the MIDI channel set allocation instead
of allocating them separately.
This ties the channel array lifetime directly to the channel set, removes
a separate allocation failure path, and lets __counted_by() describe the
array bounds. Move the embedded emux channel set to the end of its
containing structure so it can carry the flexible array.

This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split
over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the
resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next
line.
Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for
me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the
middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial.
So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the
syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed'
scripts.
The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want
whitespace cleanup anyway.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

Both drivers provide both sample_new and sample_free, and it makes no
sense to pretend that they could not. In fact, load_data() would already
crash if sample_new was null. So remove the remaining null checks.
Contrary to that, the emu10k1 driver actually has a null sample_reset,
though I'm not convinced that this inconsistency is justified.

This does several closely related things:
- Move the code from the drivers into the SoundFont loader, which
de-duplicates it.
- Sort of explain the weird "recalculate address offset" feature. Note
that I don't think it actually makes any sense - the calling user
space code should do that. The background is certainly that the source
data (the SoundFont format) uses pointers into a single wave block
(and the API allows doing the same for on-board ROM), but the API
expects the wave data from user space to be pre-chopped into
individual patches anyway.
- Make sure that the specified offsets actually lie within the supplied
wave data. Note that we don't validate ROM offsets, so one can play
back anything within the sound card's address space.
- In load_guspatch(), don't call the sample_new callback anymore when
the patch size is zero, as was already the case in load_data(). The
callbacks would instantly return in that case anyway; these checks are
now removed.

The field is explicitly documented to be initialized by the driver
(which it actually is). Also, using patch_info.size would be actually
wrong for 16-bit data, as one field counts samples, while the other
counts bytes.

This is only a very partial fix - the frequency-dependent envelope & LFO
register values aren't adjusted.
But I'm not sure they were even correct at 48 kHz to start with, as most
of them are precalculated by common code which assumes an EMU8K-specific
44.1 kHz word clock, and it seems somewhat unlikely that the hardware's
register interpretation was adjusted to compensate for the different
word clock.
In any case I'm not going to spend time on fixing that, as this code is
unlikely to be actually used by anyone today.

Due to several bugs caused by timers being re-armed after they are
shutdown and just before they are freed, a new state of timers was added
called "shutdown". After a timer is set to this state, then it can no
longer be re-armed.
The following script was run to find all the trivial locations where
del_timer() or del_timer_sync() is called in the same function that the
object holding the timer is freed. It also ignores any locations where
the timer->function is modified between the del_timer*() and the free(),
as that is not considered a "trivial" case.
This was created by using a coccinelle script and the following
commands:
$ cat timer.cocci
@@
expression ptr, slab;
identifier timer, rfield;
@@
(
- del_timer(&ptr->timer);
+ timer_shutdown(&ptr->timer);
|
- del_timer_sync(&ptr->timer);
+ timer_shutdown_sync(&ptr->timer);
)
... when strict
when != ptr->timer
(
kfree_rcu(ptr, rfield);

kfree(ptr);
)
$ spatch timer.cocci . > /tmp/t.patch

The current code for freeing the emux timer is extremely dangerous:
CPU0 CPU1
---- ----
snd_emux_timer_callback()
snd_emux_free()
spin_lock(&emu->voice_lock)
del_timer(&emu->tlist); <-- returns immediately
spin_unlock(&emu->voice_lock);
[..]
kfree(emu);
spin_lock(&emu->voice_lock);
[BOOM!]
Instead just use del_timer_sync() which will wait for the timer to finish
before continuing. No need to check if the timer is active or not when
doing so.
This doesn't fix the race of a possible re-arming of the timer, but at
least it won't use the data that has just been freed.

emu->portptrs.
Notice that given that speculation windows are large, the policy is
to kill the speculation on the first load and not worry if it can be

ASoC: Updates for v4.15
The biggest thing this release has been the conversion of the AC98 bus
to the driver model, that's been a long time coming so thanks to Robert
Jarzmik for his dedication there. Due to there being some AC97 MFD
there's a few fairly large changes in input and the MFD layer, mainly to
the wm97xx driver.
There's also some drivers/drm changes to support the new AMD Stoney
platform, these are shared with the DRM subsystem and should be being
merged via both.
Within the subsystem the overwhelming bulk of the changes is in the
Intel drivers which continue to need lots of cleanups and fixes, this
release they've also gained support for their open source firmware.
There's also some large changs in the core as Morimoto-san continues to
mirror operations into the component level in preparation for conversion
of drivers to that.
- The AC97 bus has finally caught up with the driver model thanks to
some dedicated and persistent work from Robert Jarzmik.
- Continued work from Morimoto-san on moving us towards being able to
use components for everything.
- Lots of cleanups for the Intel platform code, including support for
their open source audio firmware.
- Support for scaling MCLK with sample rate in simple-card.
- Support for AMD Stoney platform.

Many source files in the tree are missing licensing information, which
makes it harder for compliance tools to determine the correct license.
By default all files without license information are under the default
license of the kernel, which is GPL version 2.
Update the files which contain no license information with the 'GPL-2.0'
SPDX license identifier. The SPDX identifier is a legally binding
shorthand, which can be used instead of the full boiler plate text.
This patch is based on work done by Thomas Gleixner and Kate Stewart and
Philippe Ombredanne.
How this work was done:
Patches were generated and checked against linux-4.14-rc6 for a subset of
the use cases:
- file had no licensing information it it.
- file was a */uapi/* one with no licensing information in it,
- file was a */uapi/* one with existing licensing information,
Further patches will be generated in subsequent months to fix up cases
where non-standard license headers were used, and references to license
had to be inferred by heuristics based on keywords.
The analysis to determine which SPDX License Identifier to be applied to
a file was done in a spreadsheet of side by side results from of the
output of two independent scanners (ScanCode & Windriver) producing SPDX
tag:value files created by Philippe Ombredanne. Philippe prepared the
base worksheet, and did an initial spot review of a few 1000 files.
The 4.13 kernel was the starting point of the analysis with 60,537 files
assessed. Kate Stewart did a file by file comparison of the scanner
results in the spreadsheet to determine which SPDX license identifier(s)
to be applied to the file. She confirmed any determination that was not
immediately clear with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Criteria used to select files for SPDX license identifier tagging was:
- Files considered eligible had to be source code files.
- Make and config files were included as candidates if they contained >5
lines of source
- File already had some variant of a license header in it (even if <5
lines).
All documentation files were explicitly excluded.
The following heuristics were used to determine which SPDX license
identifiers to apply.
- when both scanners couldn't find any license traces, file was
considered to have no license information in it, and the top level
COPYING file license applied.
For non */uapi/* files that summary was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 11139
and resulted in the first patch in this series.
If that file was a */uapi/* path one, it was "GPL-2.0 WITH
Linux-syscall-note" otherwise it was "GPL-2.0". Results of that was:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|-------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 930
and resulted in the second patch in this series.
- if a file had some form of licensing information in it, and was one
of the */uapi/* ones, it was denoted with the Linux-syscall-note if
any GPL family license was found in the file or had no licensing in
it (per prior point). Results summary:
SPDX license identifier # files
---------------------------------------------------|------
GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note 270
GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 169
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-2-Clause) 21
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 17
LGPL-2.1+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 15
GPL-1.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 14
((GPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR BSD-3-Clause) 5
LGPL-2.0+ WITH Linux-syscall-note 4
LGPL-2.1 WITH Linux-syscall-note 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) OR MIT) 3
((GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note) AND MIT) 1
and that resulted in the third patch in this series.
- when the two scanners agreed on the detected license(s), that became
the concluded license(s).
- when there was disagreement between the two scanners (one detected a
license but the other didn't, or they both detected different
licenses) a manual inspection of the file occurred.
- In most cases a manual inspection of the information in the file
resulted in a clear resolution of the license that should apply (and
which scanner probably needed to revisit its heuristics).
- When it was not immediately clear, the license identifier was
confirmed with lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
- If there was any question as to the appropriate license identifier,
the file was flagged for further research and to be revisited later
in time.
In total, over 70 hours of logged manual review was done on the
spreadsheet to determine the SPDX license identifiers to apply to the
source files by Kate, Philippe, Thomas and, in some cases, confirmation
by lawyers working with the Linux Foundation.
Kate also obtained a third independent scan of the 4.13 code base from
FOSSology, and compared selected files where the other two scanners
disagreed against that SPDX file, to see if there was new insights. The
Windriver scanner is based on an older version of FOSSology in part, so
they are related.
Thomas did random spot checks in about 500 files from the spreadsheets
for the uapi headers and agreed with SPDX license identifier in the
files he inspected. For the non-uapi files Thomas did random spot checks
in about 15000 files.
In initial set of patches against 4.14-rc6, 3 files were found to have
copy/paste license identifier errors, and have been fixed to reflect the
correct identifier.
Additionally Philippe spent 10 hours this week doing a detailed manual
inspection and review of the 12,461 patched files from the initial patch
version early this week with:
- a full scancode scan run, collecting the matched texts, detected
license ids and scores
- reviewing anything where there was a license detected (about 500+
files) to ensure that the applied SPDX license was correct
- reviewing anything where there was no detection but the patch license
was not GPL-2.0 WITH Linux-syscall-note to ensure that the applied
SPDX license was correct
This produced a worksheet with 20 files needing minor correction. This
worksheet was then exported into 3 different .csv files for the
different types of files to be modified.
These .csv files were then reviewed by Greg. Thomas wrote a script to
parse the csv files and add the proper SPDX tag to the file, in the
format that the file expected. This script was further refined by Greg
based on the output to detect more types of files automatically and to
distinguish between header and source .c files (which need different
comment types.) Finally Greg ran the script using the .csv files to
generate the patches.

In the commit 3d774d5ef066 ("ALSA: seq: Allow the tristate build of
OSS emulation") we changed CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS to tristate, but a
couple of places were forgotten, namely, opl3 and emux Makefile.
These contain the line like
snd-opl3-synth-$(CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS) += opl3_oss.o
and this doesn't work any longer as expected because snd-opl3-synth
can be built-in while CONFIG_SND_SEQUENCER_OSS=m.
This patch fixes these places to build properly for the new kconfig
dependency. In the end, we had to use ifneq() to satisfy the
requirement. It's a bit ugly, but lesser evil.
