Socket filters can use SKF_NET_OFF and SKF_LL_OFF to read relative to
an skb's network and MAC headers. Netlink producers may reserve
headroom without resetting those headers, allowing a receiving socket's
filter to read data before the initialized message.
For example, IWPM HELLO replies are allocated with dev_alloc_skb(),
which reserves NET_SKB_PAD bytes. An unprivileged NETLINK_RDMA user can
attach a classic socket filter and disclose this headroom through the
length of the delivered reply. The resets in netlink_dump() do not help
because IWPM sends a separately allocated skb through netlink_unicast().
Reset both headers before running the receiver's filter in unicast and
broadcast delivery, as is already done for dump skbs. This also covers
other netlink producers that reserve headroom without changing their
allocation or message-building code.

The op-to-policy map a CTRL_CMD_GETPOLICY dump returns is the only way
for userspace to find out which policy index belongs to which command.
ctrl_dumppolicy_put_op() tags the nest with doit->cmd, but an op which
only has a dumpit has no doit and every path which fills the split ops
in zeroes it out, so those entries all claim to be command 0. nlctrl's
own CTRL_CMD_GETPOLICY and NETDEV_CMD_QSTATS_GET are both in that group:
[{'family-id': 16, 'op-policy': {'do': 0, 'dump': 0, 'op-id': 3}},
{'family-id': 16, 'op-policy': {'dump': 1, 'op-id': 0}},
ctrl_fill_info() gets this right - it uses the iterator's cmd for
CTRL_ATTR_OP_ID - so the two introspection interfaces of the same family
contradict each other today.
Pass the command in rather than reconstructing it from
doit->cmd | dumpit->cmd inside the helper, both callers already have it.

__netlink_deliver_tap_skb() is called from netlink_deliver_tap()
under rcu_read_lock().
dev_queue_xmit() does not require the caller to hold a device reference
count, and the device lifetime is already protected by RCU (the netlink tap
is unlinked and waited for via grace periods prior to device destruction).

netlink_realloc_groups() uses krealloc() under netlink_table_grab().
Whenever NLGRPSZ(groups) lands in a different kmalloc bucket, the old
bitmap is freed immediately.
Two readers of nlk->groups / nlk->ngroups do not hold the netlink
table lock:
1) sk_diag_dump_groups(). Hashed (bound) sockets are dumped from the
rhashtable walk in __netlink_diag_dump(), which only holds RCU.
Only the mc_list part of the dump takes nl_table_lock.
2) netlink_native_seq_show() (/proc/net/netlink), whose walk has been
lockless since commit 21e4902aea80 ("netlink: Lockless lookup with
RCU grace period in socket release").
Both can read a freed buffer, and sk_diag_dump_groups() can also read
past the end of the old (smaller) buffer if it happens to load the old
@groups pointer together with the new @ngroups value, copying the
result into a NETLINK_DIAG_GROUPS attribute.
This is the same class of bug that commit f773608026ee ("netlink:
access nlk groups safely in netlink bind and getname") fixed for bind()
and getname(); these two readers were missed. Simply grabbing the table
lock in sk_diag_dump_groups() is not an option, because it is also
called with nl_table_lock already held from the mc_list section of the
dump.
Make the lockless readers safe instead:
- Allocate a new bitmap and free the old one after an RCU grace period,
instead of relying on the implicit kfree() done by krealloc().
- Publish @groups before @ngroups, both with release semantics, and have
the lockless readers load @ngroups first. A reader can then never pair
the new (bigger) size with the old (smaller) buffer, and a reader
picking up the new pointer while still seeing the old size is
guaranteed to see the initialized bitmap.
netlink_realloc_groups() is called from process context (bind() and
setsockopt()), so kfree_rcu_mightsleep() can be used, once the table
has been released.

Paolo pointed out an issue flagged at low priority by Sashiko -
we're currently not handling BE{16,32} attributes in policy dumps.
Commit 3f4285d741b4 ("netlink: specs: fou: local-v4 and peer-v4 are big
endian") flipped two fou attributes from NLA_U32 to NLA_BE32.
This made them vanish from the policy dump.
Follow the YAML spec format and treat byte order as a property of
a u16 / u32 rather than a type of its own. I don't have a strong
preference either way. The YNL format "feels cleaner" but the
kernel's separate type is easier when handling decoding.
I don't think that the policy type is actually usable for decoding
(since it only contains input types) so I went with YNL and added
the separate attr.
A missing byte order means host order, again like in the YAML specs.

The generic netlink controller's policy dump keeps pointers to the target
family's operation and policy tables in its callback state. A dump may be
split across multiple skbs and remain pending after the initial request.
Netlink pins the module which owns the dump callback, but in this case
that is the controller's owner rather than the target family's owner. The
target family can consequently be unregistered and its module unloaded
while a policy dump is pending. Advancing the dump then dereferences
policy memory from the unloaded module.
Take a reference to the target family's module when the dump starts.
Drop it from the error and done paths. This matches the lifetime for which
the dump context retains the family and policy pointers.

Commit 71338aa7d050c ("net: convert %p usage to %pK") which is from
2011 and changed the %p annotation for pointer to %pK. Back then the
default behaviour for %p was to print the pointer. The %pK modifier was
introduced to able to control the behaviour of specific pointer values
without changing the behaviour of %p for everyone. It was dedicated to
avoid leaking pointers via /proc.
There was also the idea to remove the check from formatting the string
and move to the open callback with some helpers but this did not happen.
Things changed over time. The default behaviour for %p is now to print a
hash pointer which does not leak the address but allows to correlate if
two pointers are equal.
The policy on %p is to not introduce new ones. This is somehow in
between since it already exists. The pointer are usually socket pointers
and I don't see any value in exposing them. Therefore I am following the
recommendation of removing them. Since their usage in /proc/ can be
considered ABI I replace the pointer with a 0.
Replace the %pK annotation with 0 value. Correct the spacing for the
cases where pointer is at the beginning.

In most cases, notifications on sockets with NETLINK_LISTEN_ALL_NSID
do not contain NSID in their ancillary data in case the event is local
to the listener.
However, when a self-referential NSID is allocated for a namespace,
every local notification starts sending this ID to the user space.
This is problematic, because the listener cannot tell if those
notifications are local or not anymore without making extra requests
to figure out if the provided NSID is local or not. The listener
can also not figure out the local NSID beforehand as it can be
allocated at any point in time by other processes, changing the
structure of the future notifications for everyone.
The value is practically not useful, since it's the namespace's own
ID that the application has to obtain from other sources in order to
figure out if it's the same or not. So, for the application it's
just an extra busy work with no benefits. Moreover, applications
that do not know about this quirk may be mishandling notifications
with NSID set as notifications from remote namespaces. This is the
case for ovs-vswitchd and the iproute2's 'ip monitor' that stops
printing 'current' and starts printing the nsid number mid-session.
Lack of clear documentation for this behavior is also not helping.
A search though open-source projects doesn't reveal any projects
that use NETNSA_NSID_NOT_ASSIGNED and rely on metadata to contain
self-referential NSIDs (expected, since the value is not useful).
Quite the opposite, as already mentioned, there are few applications
that rely on NSID to not be present in local events.
Since the value is not useful and actively harmful in some cases,
let's not report it for local events, making the notifications more
consistent.
Also adding some blank lines for readability.

If the current skb is not shared, it is re-used directly for all the
sockets subscribed to the notification. If we have remote all-nsid
socket receiving a message first, then the 'nsid_is_set' will be
set to 'true'. If the nsid is NOT_ASSIGNED for the next socket in
the list, the 'nsid_is_set' will remain 'true' and the negative value
is be delivered to the user space. All subsequent nsid values will be
delivered as well, since there is no code path that sets the flag
back to 'false'.
Fix that by always dropping the flag to 'false' first.

These methods generally consume ownership of the provided skb, so even
if an error path is encountered, the skb is freed. This is because the
very first thing they do after some initial setup is to unconditionally
consume the skb via consume_skb(skb). Any subsequent errors lead to the
core netlink layer freeing the skb.
However, there is one check that occurs before ownership is passed,
which is the check for the group index. So if this error condition is
encountered, then the skb is leaked. This error condition is generally
considered a violation of the netlink API, so it's not expected to occur
under normal circumstances. For the same reason, no callers check for
this error condition, and no callers need to be adjusted. However, we
should still follow the same ownership semantics of the rest of the
function. Thus, free the skb in this codepath.

Convert AF_NETLINK's getsockopt implementation to use the new
getsockopt_iter callback with sockopt_t.
Key changes:
- Replace (char __user *optval, int __user *optlen) with sockopt_t *opt
- Use opt->optlen for buffer length (input) and returned size (output)
- Use copy_to_iter() instead of put_user()/copy_to_user()
- For NETLINK_LIST_MEMBERSHIPS: walk the groups bitmap and emit each
u32 sequentially via copy_to_iter(), then set opt->optlen to the
total size required (ALIGN(BITS_TO_BYTES(ngroups), sizeof(u32))).
The wrapper writes opt->optlen back to userspace even on partial
failure, preserving the existing API that lets userspace discover
the needed allocation size.

Commit 4fa86555d1cd ("genetlink: piggy back on resv_op to default to
a reject policy") added genl_policy_reject_all to ensure that ops
without an explicit policy reject all attributes rather than silently
accepting them. This change was applied to net.
When split ops were later introduced in net-next in
commit b8fd60c36a44 ("genetlink: allow families to use split ops directly"),
genl_op_fill_in_reject_policy_split() was added and called from
genl_op_from_split() (used for policy dumping and registration).
However, genl_get_cmd_split(), which is called for incoming messages,
copies split_ops entries as-is without applying the reject policy.
This means that split ops without policy accept all inputs.
This looks like an omission / mistake made when splitting the changes
between net and net-next. Let's try to re-introduce the checking.
Not considering this a fix given the regression potential.
If anyone reports issues we should probably fill in fake policies
for specific ops rather than reverting this.

Commit 4fa86555d1cd ("genetlink: piggy back on resv_op to default to
a reject policy") added genl_policy_reject_all to ensure that ops
without an explicit policy reject all attributes rather than silently
accepting them.
The reject policy had maxattr of 1. Passing info->attrs of size 2
may surprise families. Devlink, for instance, assumes that if
info->attrs is set it's safe to access DEVLINK_ATTR_BUS_NAME (1)
and DEVLINK_ATTR_DEV_NAME (2).
Before plugging reject policies into split ops we need to make sure
the genetlink code will not populate info->attrs if family
had no explicit policy for the op.
While even shared code paths within the families can figure out
that given op has no policy fairly easily themselves, passing attrs
with fixed size of 2 feels fairly useless and error prone.
This change has no user-visible impact, reject attrs are not
reported to the user space via getpolicy. We do have to remove
the safety check in netlink_policy_dump_get_policy_idx()
but it seems to have been there to catch likely faulty input,
the code can handle maxattr = 0 just fine.

inode->i_ino is being converted to a u64. sock.sk_ino (which caches the
inode number) must also be widened to avoid truncation on 32-bit
architectures where unsigned long is only 32 bits.
Change sk_ino from unsigned long to u64, and update the return type
of sock_i_ino() to match. Fix all format strings that print the
result of sock_i_ino() (%lu -> %llu), and widen the intermediate
variables and function parameters in the diag modules that were
using int to hold the inode number.
Note that the UAPI socket diag structures (inet_diag_msg.idiag_inode,
unix_diag_msg.udiag_ino, etc.) are all __u32 and cannot be changed
without breaking the ABI. The assignments to those fields will
silently truncate, which is the existing behavior.

This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split
over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the
resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next
line.
Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for
me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the
middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial.
So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the
syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed'
scripts.
The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want
whitespace cleanup anyway.

This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using
git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' |
xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/'
to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL
argument to just drop that argument.
Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly
more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered:
they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and
the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically.
For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate
conversion.

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to
avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and
instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union
object instances:
Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...)
Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...)
Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...)
are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...)
(where TYPE may also be *VAR)
The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning
"TYPE *".

Per family bind/unbind callbacks were introduced to allow families
to track multicast group consumer presence, e.g. to start or stop
producing events depending on listeners.
However, in genl_bind() the bind() callback was invoked even if
capability checks failed and ret was set to -EPERM. This means that
callbacks could run on behalf of unauthorized callers while the
syscall still returned failure to user space.
Fix this by only invoking bind() after "if (ret) break;" check
i.e. after permission checks have succeeded.

Followup of commit c51da3f7a161 ("net: remove sock_i_uid()")
A recent syzbot report was the trigger for this change.
Over the years, we had many problems caused by the
read_lock[_bh](&sk->sk_callback_lock) in sock_i_uid().
We could fix smc_diag_dump_proto() or make a more radical move:
Instead of waiting for new syzbot reports, cache the socket
inode number in sk->sk_ino, so that we no longer
need to acquire sk->sk_callback_lock in sock_i_ino().
This makes socket dumps faster (one less cache line miss,
and two atomic ops avoided).

netlink_attachskb() checks for the socket's read memory allocation
constraints. Firstly, it has:
rmem < READ_ONCE(sk->sk_rcvbuf)
to check if the just increased rmem value fits into the socket's receive
buffer. If not, it proceeds and tries to wait for the memory under:
rmem + skb->truesize > READ_ONCE(sk->sk_rcvbuf)
The checks don't cover the case when skb->truesize + sk->sk_rmem_alloc is
equal to sk->sk_rcvbuf. Thus the function neither successfully accepts
these conditions, nor manages to reschedule the task - and is called in
retry loop for indefinite time which is caught as:

Commit under Fixes tightened up the memory accounting for Netlink
sockets. Looks like the accounting is too strict for some existing
use cases, Marek reported issues with nl80211 / WiFi iw CLI.
To reduce number of iterations Netlink dumps try to allocate
messages based on the size of the buffer passed to previous
recvmsg() calls. If user space uses a larger buffer in recvmsg()
than sk_rcvbuf we will allocate an skb we won't be able to queue.
Make sure we always allow at least one skb to be queued.
Same workaround is already present in netlink_attachskb().
Alternative would be to cap the allocation size to
rcvbuf - rmem_alloc
but as I said, the workaround is already present in other places.

Netlink has this pattern in some places
if (atomic_read(&sk->sk_rmem_alloc) > sk->sk_rcvbuf)
atomic_add(skb->truesize, &sk->sk_rmem_alloc);
, which has the same problem fixed by commit 5a465a0da13e ("udp:
Fix multiple wraparounds of sk->sk_rmem_alloc.").
For example, if we set INT_MAX to SO_RCVBUFFORCE, the condition
is always false as the two operands are of int.
Then, a single socket can eat as many skb as possible until OOM
happens, and we can see multiple wraparounds of sk->sk_rmem_alloc.
Let's fix it by using atomic_add_return() and comparing the two
variables as unsigned int.

While kernel sockets are dismantled during pernet_operations->exit(),
their freeing can be delayed by any tx packets still held in qdisc
or device queues, due to skb_set_owner_w() prior calls.
This then trigger the following warning from ref_tracker_dir_exit() [1]
To fix this, make sure that kernel sockets own a reference on net->passive.
Add sk_net_refcnt_upgrade() helper, used whenever a kernel socket
is converted to a refcounted one.

When we terminated the dump, the callback isn't running, so cb_running
should be set to false to be logically consistent.
cb_running signifies whether a dump is ongoing. It is set to true in
cb->start(), and is checked in netlink_dump() to be true initially.
After the dump, it is set to false in the same function.
This is just a cleanup, no path should access this field on a closed
socket.

syzbot can figure out a way to redirect a netlink message to a tap.
Sending empty skbs to devices is not valid and we end up hitting
a skb_assert_len() in __dev_queue_xmit().
Make catching these mistakes easier, assert the skb size directly
in netlink core.

Commit under fixes extended extack reporting to dumps.
It works under normal conditions, because extack errors are
usually reported during ->start() or the first ->dump(),
it's quite rare that the dump starts okay but fails later.
If the dump does fail later, however, the input skb will
already have the initiating message pulled, so checking
if bad attr falls within skb->data will fail.
Switch the check to using nlh, which is always valid.
syzbot found a way to hit that scenario by filling up
the receive queue. In this case we initiate a dump
but don't call ->dump() until there is read space for
an skb.
