2 dayswifi: nl80211: add NL80211_CMD_UPDATE_BEACONJohannes Berg
Updating beacon and related templates with NL80211_CMD_SET_BEACON requires the wiphy mutex, which can get contended, delaying the updates. Add a NL80211_CMD_UPDATE_BEACON operation that can only do beacon template updates, not other configuration changes, but is called without the wiphy mutex. If something requires the mutex then the driver can return -EAGAIN, to go through the normal change_beacon with wiphy mutex held. Also with this support updating multiple beacons for an MLD at the same time, just to further reduce round-trips if desired. 10 dayswifi: cfg80211: nan: add Instant Communication supportIlan Peer
Add NL80211_NAN_CONF_INSTANT_COMM flag to let user space request that the NAN synchronization logic starts Instant Communication (IC) as defined in Chapter 13 of the Wi-Fi Aware Specification v4.0. Add NL80211_NAN_CAPA_INSTANT_COMM for drivers to advertise it. The capability requires configurable synchronization support, and IC requests are rejected if it isn't advertised. When IC is enabled, user space must also configure the discovery beacon interval. The IC schedule is expected to be configured by user space. 10 dayswifi: cfg80211: add protected TWT assoc flagJohannes Berg
Protected TWT support is indicated in RSNX, but RSNX may be used from security profile now, and not be present in the association response frame, so the logic in mac80211 to determine it doesn't/won't really work. Add a flag for wpa_supplicant to indicate if protected TWT is supported in the association, it can easily check this based on the RSNX data that was used. 2026-09-28wifi: nl80211: allow a NAN peer schedule with 2 channels in the same slotMiri Korenblit
A NAN peer that has dual radio can schedule a slot to 2 different channels. Until now, for single radio devices, we disallowed such a peer schedule. This was done so because the assumption was that the user space needs to pick one of the channels for us, according to its logic. But for devices that have their ULW logic offloaded, it can be useful if we program it with the full information and let it decide what to do. For example: - peer has slot S scheduled to C1 and C2 - local schedule has S scheduled to C1 - in practice, the device is on C2 at S, for example due to non-NAN activity In that case, this extra information can actually be useful to the device, and bring to more efficient usage of the time. Allow a peer schedule that has a single slot scheduled to two different channels. 2026-09-28wifi: cfg80211: add NL80211_CMD_NAN_SET_NON_EVAC_CHANNELSAndrei Otcheretianski
Add a new NL80211_CMD_NAN_SET_NON_EVAC_CHANNELS command that lets user space mark a set of NAN channels as non-evacuable. The command carries the channels as nested NL80211_ATTR_NAN_CHANNEL attributes (chandef only) and replaces the entire set of non-evacuable channels; channels not included in the list become evacuable again. All provided channels must already exist in the current local schedule, otherwise -ENOENT is returned. The command is rejected with -EBUSY while a schedule update is pending. This prevents the kernel from evacuating channels that carry NDC or immutable schedules, so evacuating these channels would break existing NDP connections. 2026-09-28wifi: cfg80211: add Control Integrity Protocol (CIP) APIsBenjamin Berg
The Control Integrity Protocol consists of a set of capabilities for the MIC padding as well as a new CIGTK that can be installed. The CIGTK uses a fixed GMAC-256 cipher for which no RSN extension is defined as it is bound to the pairwise cipher being GCMP-256. The CIGTK uses the key index 0 and 1, making it necessary to add a new key type for it. Add a new CIP feature flag and attributes for CIP Capabilities and enabling the feature for stations and the association. Also extend the cfg80211 API to pass the key type rather than a single pairwise boolean. 2026-09-16wifi: cfg80211: add attribute for TX/RX denoting there is no stationBenjamin Berg
For MLD stations, userspace may need to explicitly transmit a frame to a specific link address. In that case, it needs to ensure that no address translation happens. In the reverse case of an RX, userspace may need to know the link address for a frame. By passing the information whether a STA is known for the frame, userspace knows whether link translation happened and can do the reverse lookup when needed. This is important for flows where a STA is still registered but the connection has been lost and it is returning again. 2026-09-04wifi: nl80211: add support to configure 6 GHz non-HT duplicate transmissionManish Dharanenthiran
As per IEEE Std 802.11-2024, subclause 26.17.2.2, a 6 GHz AP can transmit a Beacon frame using a non-HT duplicate PPDU, so that stations scanning only PSC channels can discover it. Currently, there is no mechanism to request the driver to transmit non-HT duplicate Beacon frames. In [1], changes were made to parse the Beacon from user-space to set the non-HT duplicate flag in the kernel. However, it was suggested that non-HT transmission be part of the Beacon TX rate settings. Hence, add NL80211_TXRATE_6GHZ_NON_HT_DUP as a flag attribute under NL80211_ATTR_TX_RATES to let user-space request the driver to transmit non-HT duplicate Beacons. Also add validation to reject the Beacon if non-HT duplicate Beacon transmission is enabled when legacy rates are not configured. 2026-07-06wifi: cfg80211: Fragment per-link station stats in nl80211_dump_station()P Praneesh
In MLO scenarios, stations may have multiple links, each with distinct statistics. When userspace tools like iw or hostapd request station dumps, attempting to pack all per-link stats into a single netlink message can easily exceed the default 4KB buffer limit, especially when more than two links are active. This results in -EMSGSIZE errors and incomplete data delivery. To address this, fragment per-link station statistics across multiple netlink messages to ensure reliable delivery of complete MLO station information. Extend the stateful context with a two-phase dump mechanism: phase 0 (AGGREGATED) sends combined MLO-level statistics and phase 1 (PER_LINK) sends individual per-link statistics for each active link. The dump loop is structured to produce exactly one netlink message per iteration, with a common header (ifindex, wdev, mac, generation) built once and phase-specific payload added via a switch statement. This keeps header construction in one place and makes the EMSGSIZE bail-out uniform. Add a new request flag attribute, NL80211_ATTR_STA_DUMP_LINK_STATS (NLA_FLAG), for NL80211_CMD_GET_STATION dump. Userspace can set this flag to request per-link station statistics for MLO stations. Extract this flag during the first dump invocation by passing an attrbuf to nl80211_prepare_wdev_dump(); use __free(kfree) to avoid scattered manual kfree() calls. Cache the boolean in the dump context to avoid repeated parsing on subsequent invocations. Per-link messages carry a single NL80211_ATTR_MLO_LINKS nest with the link ID, link-specific MAC, and per-link NL80211_ATTR_STA_INFO payload. The link-specific validity (is_valid_ether_addr) and null pointer guard are checked in nl80211_put_link_station_payload() before any message construction begins. Also fix all nla_nest_start_noflag() calls in nl80211_fill_link_station() for nested attribute types (STA_INFO, BSS_PARAM, TID_STATS, per-tid) to use nla_nest_start() so the NLA_F_NESTED flag is set correctly. Propagate the actual return value from nl80211_put_sta_info_common() in the AGGREGATED phase rather than returning skb->len. Returning skb->len signals netlink to re-invoke the dump with the same sta_idx, causing an infinite loop when the aggregated payload is too large to fit; returning the real error code (-EMSGSIZE or otherwise) terminates the dump cleanly. Backward compatibility is seamlessly preserved for non-MLO stations. Compatibility is assumed to only be the case when it's actually identical, enabling later management of this in channel contexts in mac80211 for multiple APs, but requiring userspace to set up the identical chandef on all AP interfaces that share a channel (and BSS color.) 2026-05-05wifi: cfg80211: allow devices to advertise extended MLD capa/opsJohannes Berg

Repurpose the existing NL80211_ATTR_ASSOC_MLD_EXT_CAPA_OPS by renaming it to NL80211_ATTR_EXT_MLD_CAPA_AND_OPS (with a define for compatibility) and advertise the capabilities. We can also later use the value, if needed, to set per-station capabilities on STAs added to AP interfaces. 2026-05-05wifi: cfg80211: add LTF keyseed support for secure rangingPeddolla Harshavardhan Reddy
Currently there is no way to install an LTF key seed that can be used in non-trigger-based (NTB) and trigger-based (TB) FTM ranging to protect NDP frames. Without this, drivers cannot enable PHY-layer security for peer measurement sessions, leaving ranging measurements vulnerable to eavesdropping and manipulation. Introduce NL80211_KEY_LTF_SEED attribute and the dedicated extended feature flag NL80211_EXT_FEATURE_SET_KEY_LTF_SEED to allow drivers to advertise and install LTF key seeds via nl80211. The key seed must be configured beforehand to ensure the peer measurement session is secure. The driver must advertise both NL80211_EXT_FEATURE_SECURE_LTF and NL80211_EXT_FEATURE_SET_KEY_LTF_SEED for the key seed installation to be permitted. The LTF key seed is pairwise key material and must only be used with pairwise key type. Reject attempts to use it with other key types. 2026-05-05wifi: cfg80211: allow suppressing FTM result reporting for PD requestsPeddolla Harshavardhan Reddy
Proximity detection often does not require detailed ranging measurements, yet userspace currently receives full FTM results for every request, causing unnecessary data transfer, host wakeups, and processing overhead. Add an optional control to suppress ranging result reporting for peer-to-peer PD requests. Introduce the NL80211_PMSR_FTM_REQ_ATTR_PD_SUPPRESS_RESULTS flag; when set with a PD request, the device may perform the measurements (e.g. when acting as RSTA) but must not report the measurement results to userspace. 2026-05-05wifi: cfg80211: add role-based peer limits to FTM capabilitiesPeddolla Harshavardhan Reddy
Peer measurement capabilities currently advertise a single maximum peer count regardless of device role. Some devices support different peer limits when operating as initiator versus responder. Add max_peers fields inside the ftm.ista and ftm.rsta sub-structs of cfg80211_pmsr_capabilities to allow drivers to advertise per-role peer limits. These limits are generic and not restricted to any specific ranging type. 2026-05-05wifi: cfg80211: add proximity detection capabilities to PMSRPeddolla Harshavardhan Reddy
Introduce Proximity Detection (PD) capabilities in Peer Measurement Service (PMSR) as defined in the Wi-Fi Alliance specification "Proximity Ranging (PR) Implementation Consideration Draft 1.9 Rev 1 section 3.3". This enables devices to advertise peer to peer ranging support. Restructure FTM capabilities in cfg80211_pmsr_capabilities to replace the single support_rsta flag with nested ista and rsta sub-structs, each carrying per-mode flags for Non-Trigger Based (NTB), Trigger Based (TB), and EDCA based ranging. This allows drivers to advertise detailed role and protocol support for both initiator and responder roles. Add support to pass additional ISTA and RSTA role capabilities to userspace using new nested ISTA_CAPS and RSTA_CAPS attributes. The legacy RSTA_SUPPORT flag is retained for backward compatibility. Add NL80211_PMSR_FTM_CAPA_ATTR_TYPE_CAPS nested attribute using the nl80211_peer_measurement_ftm_type_capa enum with two sub-flags: NL80211_PMSR_FTM_TYPE_CAPA_ATTR_INFRA_SUPPORT for STA-to-AP or AP-to-STA ranging, and NL80211_PMSR_FTM_TYPE_CAPA_ATTR_PD_SUPPORT for peer-to-peer ranging. Add CONCURRENT_ISTA_RSTA_SUPPORT as a FTM capability flag indicating the device can simultaneously act as initiator and responder in a multi-peer measurement request. Extend FTM capabilities with antenna configuration fields (max_no_of_tx_antennas, max_no_of_rx_antennas) for the PR Element during PASN negotiation, and ranging interval limits (min_allowed_ranging_interval_edca, min_allowed_ranging_interval_ntb) to advertise device timing constraints for EDCA and NTB-based ranging. Update the FTM request validation path in pmsr.c to check RSTA requests against the per-mode rsta capabilities (NTB, TB, EDCA), rejecting requests for modes the device does not support. Add a new wdev-only interface type NL80211_IFTYPE_PD to support Proximity Detection (PD) operations such as PASN and peer measurement operations. This interface type operates without a netdev, similar to P2P_DEVICE and NAN interfaces. Implement support across cfg80211 and mac80211 layers with PD-specific checks gated by the NL80211_EXT_FEATURE_SECURE_RTT feature flag, management frame registration and transmission capabilities, and proper channel context handling where PD interfaces are excluded from bandwidth calculations. Update mac80211 to recognize the new interface type in the relevant paths for this management-only interface. PD discovery can be performed on any available interface, such as NL80211_IFTYPE_STATION. If PD/PMSR uses the MAC address of an existing interface type, such as NL80211_IFTYPE_STATION, then pairing and measurement shall use that same interface. If PD/PMSR uses a different MAC address, such as a random MAC address, then pairing and measurement can be performed on a new NL80211_IFTYPE_PD interface created with that random MAC address. 2026-05-05wifi: cfg80211: Add MAC address filter to remain_on_channelPeddolla Harshavardhan Reddy
Currently the remain_on_channel operation does not support filtering incoming frames by destination MAC address. This prevents use cases such as PASN authentication in the responder side that need to receive frames addressed to a specific MAC during the off-channel period. Add an rx_addr parameter to the remain_on_channel operation callback and propagate it through the call chain from nl80211 to driver implementations. Introduce the extended feature NL80211_EXT_FEATURE_ROC_ADDR_FILTER as a capability gate so that cfg80211 rejects the request if the driver does not advertise support for address filtering. Extract the address from the NL80211_ATTR_MAC attribute when provided in the netlink message and update the tracing infrastructure to include the address in remain_on_channel trace events. The rx_addr parameter is optional and can be NULL, maintaining backward compatibility with existing drivers. 2026-05-05wifi: cfg80211: indicate (Re)Association frame encryption to userspaceKavita Kavita
In SME-in-driver mode, the driver handles the entire (re)association exchange. Userspace (e.g., wpa_supplicant) currently has no explicit indication of whether the (re)association exchange was encrypted, making it difficult to distinguish EPP (Enhanced Privacy Protection, IEEE 802.11bi) associations from non-EPP associations. When (Re)Association frame encryption is used, the (Re)Association Response frame must contain a Key Delivery element as specified in IEEE P802.11bi/D4.0, Table 9-65. Userspace must process this element only when the (Re)Association Response frame is actually encrypted. Processing it unconditionally for unencrypted frames leads to incorrect behavior. Without an explicit indication from the driver, userspace cannot determine whether encryption was used and whether the Key Delivery element is valid. Add a new flag attribute NL80211_ATTR_ASSOC_ENCRYPTED and a corresponding field "assoc_encrypted" in cfg80211_connect_resp_params to indicate that both the (Re)Association Request and Response frames are transmitted encrypted over the air. For mac80211-based drivers, extend cfg80211_rx_assoc_resp_data with the assoc_encrypted field as well, which is then propagated to cfg80211_connect_resp_params. Pass the flag to userspace via NL80211_CMD_CONNECT event. 2026-03-25wifi: nl80211: Add a notification to notify NAN channel evacuationMiri Korenblit
If all available channel resources are used for NAN channels, and one of them is shared with another interface, and that interface needs to move to a different channel (for example STA interface that needs to do a channel or a link switch), then the driver can evacuate one of the NAN channels (i.e. detach it from its channel resource and announce to the peers that this channel is ULWed). Add an NL80211 command to configure the NAN schedule of a NAN peer. Such a schedule contains a list of NAN channels, and a mapping from each time slots to the corresponding channel (or unscheduled). Also contains more information about the schedule, such as sequence ID and map ID. Not all of the restrictions are validated in this patch. 2026-03-25wifi: nl80211: add support for NAN stationsMiri Korenblit
There are 2 types of logical links with a NAN peer: - management (NMI), which is used for Tx/Rx of NAN management frames. - data (NDI), which is used for Tx/Rx of data frames, or non-NAN management frames. The NMI station has two roles: - representation of the NAN peer - for example, the peer's schedule and the HT, VHT, HE capabilities - belong to the NMI station, and not to the NDI ones. - Tx/Rx of NAN management frames to/from the peer. The NDI station is used for Tx/Rx data frames of a specific NDP that was established with the NAN peer. Note that a peer can choose to reuse its NMI address as the NDI address. In that case, it is expected that two stations will be added even though they will have the same address. - An NDI station can only be added after the corresponding NMI station was configured with capabilities. - All the NDI stations will be removed before the NDI interface is brought down. - All NMI stations will be removed before NAN is stopped. - Before NMI sta removal, all corresponding NDI stations will be removed Add support for adding, removing, and changing NMI and NDI stations. 2026-03-25wifi: cfg80211: separately store HT, VHT and HE capabilities for NANMiri Korenblit
In NAN, unlike in other modes, there is only one set of (HT, VHT, HE) capabilities that is used for all channels (and bands) used in the NAN data path. This set of capabilities will have to be a special one, for example - have the minimum of (HT-for-5 GHz, HT-for-2.4 GHz), careful handling of the bits that have a different meaning for each band, etc. While we could use the exiting sband/iftype capabilities, and require identical capabilities for all bands (makes no sense since this means that we will have VHT capabilities in the 2.4 GHz slot), or require that only one of the sbands will be set, or have logic to extract the minimum and handle the conflicting bits - it seems simpler to add a dedicated set of capabilities which is special for NAN, and is band agnostic, to be populated by the driver. That way we also let the driver decide how it wants to handle the conflicting bits. Add this special set of these capabilities to wiphy:nan_capabilities, to be populated by the driver. 2026-03-25wifi: cfg80211: Add an API to configure local NAN scheduleMiri Korenblit
Add an nl80211 API to allow user space to configure the local NAN schedule. Channels can be added to schedule even without being scheduled, for reservation purposes. A schedule can be configured either immedietally or be deferred, in case there are already connected peers. When the deferred flag is set, the command is a request from the device to perform an announced schedule update: send the updated NAN Availability - as set in this command - to the peers, and do the actual switch to the new schedule on the right time (i.e. at the end of the slot after the slot in which the update was sent to the peers). When the AP has an advertised TID to Link Mapping (TTLM) it shall include the element in the association response. As such, when this element is present it needs to be used for the currently dormant links. See Draft P802.11REVmf_D1.0 section 35.3.7.2.3 ("Negotiation of TTLM") for the details. The flag is also not usable in case userspace wants to specify a negotiated TTLM during association. Note that for the link reconfiguration case, mac80211 did not use the information. Draft P802.11REVmf_D1.0 states in section 35.3.6.4 ("Link reconfiguration to the setup links) that we "shall operate with all the TIDs mapped to the newly added links ..." All this means that the flag is not needed. The implementation should parse the information from the association response. 2026-01-19wifi: nl80211: ignore cluster id after NAN startedMiri Korenblit
After NAN was started, cluster id updates from the user space should not happen, since the device already started a cluster with the previousely provided id. Since NL80211_CMD_CHANGE_NAN_CONFIG requires to set the full NAN configuration, we can't require that NL80211_NAN_CONF_CLUSTER_ID won't be included in this command, and keeping the last confgiured value just to be able to compare it against the new one seems a bit overkill. Therefore, just ignore cluster id in this command and clarify the documentation.
