4 daysNFSv4/flexfiles: Carry the device node reference across each I/OBenjamin Coddington
Rather than dropping the device node reference when DS setup completes, transfer it to the in-flight I/O: carry it on nfs_pgio_header and nfs_commit_data as ds_dev, and release it when the header or commit data is released, alongside the lseg reference. Convert the completion paths to use the carried node instead of re-reading the mirror's pinned pointer: DS error tracking, marking the deviceid available/unavailable, and deleting the deviceid on connection errors now act on the node the I/O was actually sent to. Once a CHANGE notification can re-point the pinned pointer mid-flight, this keeps error attribution on the old device rather than its replacement (and removes a NULL dereference had the pointer been reset to NULL). FF_LAYOUT_DEVID_NODE() is now unused; remove it. 2026-08-20NFSv4.2: fix LAYOUTSTATS send buffer exhaustionJunrui Luo
encode_layoutstats_maxsz budgets XDR_QUADLEN(PNFS_LAYOUTSTATS_MAXSIZE), i.e. 256 bytes, for the layoutupdate4 body written by the layout driver. The flexfiles record can exceed that. ff_layout_encode_ff_layoutupdate() emits, per data server, a netaddr4, an nfs_fh4, two ff_io_latency4, an nfstime4 and a bool. A data server whose filehandle is NFS_MAXFHSIZE bytes long already accounts for 132 of those bytes, and the two ff_io_latency4 at 64 bytes each, the nfstime4 and the bool add a further 144, so the body passes 256 bytes before the netaddr4 is encoded at all. encode_layoutstats() additionally writes the deviceid4 and the layoutupdate4 lou_type word, neither of which the macro accounts for. The filehandle and the address are both chosen by the server, through LAYOUTGET and GETDEVICEINFO, so it can drive the encoder past the end of the send buffer. xdr_reserve_space() returns NULL once that happens, and the two ff_layout_encode_io_latency() calls run with dss_info->mirror->lock held, so a NULL return there leaves the lock permanently held. Raise PNFS_LAYOUTSTATS_MAXSIZE to 384 so that the record fits inside the reservation. 2026-08-17nfs4.2: add UNCACHEABLE_FILE_DATA attribute supportTom Haynes
Recognize the NFSv4.2 per-file UNCACHEABLE_FILE_DATA attribute (attr 87, draft-ietf-nfsv4-uncacheable-files): decode it via GETATTR, track per- exported-filesystem support, and record on the inode whether a regular file's data must not be cached. Acting on the attribute (opening such files O_DIRECT) is done by a subsequent change. If the NFSv4 server reports a regular file's UNCACHEABLE_FILE_DATA as true, it indicates the file's data must not be cached; the client records this in NFS_I(inode)->uncacheable_file_data for use by the I/O paths. The UNCACHEABLE_FILE_DATA attribute applies only to regular files (NF4REG); per the draft a server MUST reject a query of it on any other object type with NFS4ERR_INVAL. A subsequent commit gates the client accordingly. 2026-06-08nfs: use nfsi->rwsem to protect traversal of the file lock listYang Erkun
Lingfeng identified a bug and suggested two solutions, but both appear to have issues. Generally, we cannot release flc_lock while iterating over the file lock list to avoid use-after-free (UAF) problems with file locks. However, functions like nfs_delegation_claim_locks and nfs4_reclaim_locks cannot adhere to this rule because recover_lock or nfs4_lock_delegation_recall may take a long time. To resolve this, NFS switches to using nfsi->rwsem for the same protection, and nfs_reclaim_locks follows this approach. Although nfs_delegation_claim_locks uses so_delegreturn_mutex instead, this is inadequate since a single inode can have multiple nfs4_state instances. Therefore, the fix is to also use nfsi->rwsem in this case. Furthermore, after commit c69899a17ca4 ("NFSv4: Update of VFS byte range lock must be atomic with the stateid update"), the functions nfs4_locku_done and nfs4_lock_done also break this rule because they call locks_lock_inode_wait without holding nfsi->rwsem. Simply adding this protection could cause many deadlocks, so instead, the call to locks_lock_inode_wait is moved into _nfs4_proc_setlk. Regarding the bug fixed by commit c69899a17ca4 ("NFSv4: Update of VFS byte range lock must be atomic with the stateid update"), it has been resolved after commit 0460253913e5 ("NFSv4: nfs4_do_open() is incorrectly triggering state recovery") because all slots are drained before calling nfs4_do_reclaim, which prevents concurrent stateid changes along this path. Also, nfs_delegation_claim_locks does not cause this concurrency either since when _nfs4_proc_setlk is called with NFS_DELEGATED_STATE, no RPC is sent, so nfs4_lock_done is not called. Therefore, nfs4_lock_delegation_recall from nfs_delegation_claim_locks is the first time the stateid is set. 2026-06-05VFS: use wait_var_event for waiting in d_alloc_parallel()NeilBrown
Parallel lookup starts with a call of d_alloc_parallel(). That primitive either returns a matching hashed dentry or allocates a new one in the in-lookup state and returns it to the caller. Once the caller is done with lookup, it indicates so either by call of d_{splice_alias,add}() or by call of d_done_lookup(); at that point dentry leaves the in-lookup state. If d_alloc_parallel() finds a matching in-lookup dentry, it must wait for that dentry to leave the in-lookup state, one way or another. Currently by supplying wait_queue_head to d_alloc_parallel(). If d_alloc_parallel() creates a new in-lookup dentry, the address of that wait_queue_head is stored in ->d_wait of new dentry and stays there while it's in the in-lookup; subsequent d_alloc_parallel() will wait on the queue found in the matching in-lookup dentry. Transition out of in-lookup state wakes waiters on that queue (if any). That works, but the calling conventions are inconvenient - the caller must supply wait_queue_head and make sure that it survives at least until the new in-lookup dentry leaves the in-lookup state. That amounts to boilerplate in the d_alloc_parallel() callers that are followed by a call of d_lookup_done() in the same function; in cases like nfs asynchronous unlink it gets worse than that. This patch changes d_alloc_parallel() to use wake_up_var_locked() to wake up waiters, and wait_var_event_spinlock() to wait. dentry->d_lock is used for synchronisation as it is already held and the relevant times. That eliminates the need of caller-supplied wait_queue_head, simplifying the calling conventions. Better yet, we only need one bit of information stored in dentry itself: whether there are any waiters to be woken up, and that can be easily stored in ->d_flags; ->d_wait goes away. The reason we need that bit (DCACHE_LOOKUP_WAITERS) is that with wait_var machinery the queues are shared with all kinds of stuff and there's no way tell if any of the waiters have anything to do with our dentry; most of the time none of them will be relevant, so we need to avoid the pointless wakeups. Another benefit of the new scheme comes from the fact that wakeups have to be done outside of write-side critical areas of ->i_dir_seq; with the old scheme we need to carry the value picked from ->d_wait from __d_lookup_unhash() to the place where we actually wake the waiters up. Now we can just leave DCACHE_LOOKUP_WAITERS in ->d_flags until we get to doing wakeups - that's done within the same ->d_lock scope, so we are fine; new bit is accessed only under ->d_lock and it's seen only on dentries with DCACHE_PAR_LOOKUP in ->d_flags. __d_lookup_unhash() no longer needs to re-init ->d_lru. That was previously shared (in a union) with ->d_wait but ->d_wait is now gone so it no longer corrupts ->d_lru. 2026-05-11nfs: Implement fileattr_get for case sensitivityChuck Lever
An NFS server re-exporting an NFS mount point needs to report the case sensitivity behavior of the underlying filesystem to its clients. NFSD's attribute encoder obtains that information by calling vfs_fileattr_get() on the lower filesystem, so the NFS client must implement fileattr_get to surface what it learned from its own server. The NFS client already retrieves case sensitivity information from servers during mount via PATHCONF (NFSv3) or the FATTR4_CASE_INSENSITIVE/FATTR4_CASE_PRESERVING attributes (NFSv4). Expose this information through fileattr_get by reporting the FS_XFLAG_CASEFOLD and FS_XFLAG_CASENONPRESERVING flags. NFSv2 lacks PATHCONF support, so mounts using that protocol version default to standard POSIX behavior: case-sensitive and case-preserving. PATHCONF is now invoked unconditionally for NFSv2 and NFSv3 mounts so the case-sensitivity capabilities are established even when the user pins server->namelen with the namlen= mount option. That option is orthogonal to case handling, and skipping PATHCONF because namelen was already known would leave the caps unset. The two capability bits carry opposite polarity because their POSIX defaults differ. Most servers are case-sensitive and case- preserving, matching "neither xflag set." NFS_CAP_CASE_INSENSITIVE is set only when the server affirms case insensitivity, so "server said no" and "server did not answer" both collapse to the case- sensitive default. NFS_CAP_CASE_NONPRESERVING follows the same pattern in the opposite direction: set only when the server affirms that it does not preserve case, so that silence or a missing attribute lands on the case-preserving default. The NFSv4 probe checks res.attr_bitmask[0] to distinguish "server said false" from "server omitted the attribute" before setting the bit. Both capability bits are cleared before each probe so a remount, an NFSv4 transparent state migration to a server with different case semantics, or a probe whose reply does not arrive does not retain stale capabilities from the prior probe. 2026-04-13nfs: update inode ctime after removexattr operationJeff Layton
xfstest generic/728 fails with delegated timestamps. The client does a removexattr and then a stat to test the ctime, which doesn't change. The stat() doesn't trigger a GETATTR because of the delegated timestamps, so it relies on the cached ctime, which is wrong. The setxattr compound has a trailing GETATTR, which ensures that its ctime gets updated. Follow the same strategy with removexattr. If we notice that we're renaming a file within a directory then we take that as a sign that the user is working with the current directory and may want a delegation to avoid extra revalidations when possible. 2025-10-13NFS4: Apply delay_retrans to async operationsJoshua Watt
The setting of delay_retrans is applied to synchronous RPC operations because the retransmit count is stored in same struct nfs4_exception that is passed each time an error is checked. However, for asynchronous operations (READ, WRITE, LOCKU, CLOSE, DELEGRETURN), a new struct nfs4_exception is made on the stack each time the task callback is invoked. This means that the retransmit count is always zero and thus delay_retrans never takes effect. Apply delay_retrans to these operations by tracking and updating their retransmit count. Note that passing &dentry->d_name is safe in e.g. nfs_lookup() - it *is* stable there, as it is in ->create() et.al. dget_parent() in nfs_instantiate() should be redundant - it'd better be stable there; if it's not, we have more trouble, since ->d_name would also be unsafe in such case. nfs_submount() and nfs4_submount() may or may not require fixes - if they ever get moved on server with fhandle preserved, we are in trouble there... UAF window is fairly narrow here and exfiltration requires the ability to watch the traffic. Reviewed-by: Jeff Layton <jlayton@kernel.org> Signed-off-by: Al Viro <viro@zeniv.linux.org.uk>
2025-01-21nfs_common: make include/linux/nfs4.h include generated nfs4_1.hJeff Layton
In the long run, the NFS development community intends to autogenerate a lot of the XDR handling code. Both the NFS client and server include "include/linux/nfs4.hi". That file was hand-rolled, and some of the symbols in it conflict with the autogenerated symbols. Add a small nfs4_1.x to Documentation that currently just has the necessary definitions for the delstid draft, and generate the relevant header and source files. Make include/linux/nfs4.h include the generated include/linux/sunrpc/xdrgen/nfs4_1.h and remove the conflicting definitions from it and nfs_xdr.h. 2025-01-14nfs/localio: add direct IO enablement with sync and async IO supportMike Snitzer
This commit simply adds the required O_DIRECT plumbing. It doesn't address the fact that NFS doesn't ensure all writes are page aligned (nor device logical block size aligned as required by O_DIRECT). Because NFS will read-modify-write for IO that isn't aligned, LOCALIO will not use O_DIRECT semantics by default if/when an application requests the use of O_DIRECT. Allow the use of O_DIRECT semantics by: 1: Adding a flag to the nfs_pgio_header struct to allow the NFS O_DIRECT layer to signal that O_DIRECT was used by the application 2: Adding a 'localio_O_DIRECT_semantics' NFS module parameter that when enabled will cause LOCALIO to use O_DIRECT semantics (this may cause IO to fail if applications do not properly align their IO). 2024-09-23nfs: simplify and guarantee owner uniqueness.NeilBrown
I have evidence of an Linux NFS client getting NFS4ERR_BAD_SEQID to a v4.0 LOCK request to a Linux server (which had fixed the problem with RELEASE_LOCKOWNER bug fixed). The LOCK request presented a "new" lock owner so there are two seq ids in the request: that for the open file, and that for the new lock. Given the context I am confident that the new lock owner was reported to have the wrong seqid. As lock owner identifiers are reused, the server must still have a lock owner active which the client thinks is no longer active. I wasn't able to determine a root-cause but the simplest fix seems to be to ensure lock owners are always unique much as open owners are (thanks to a time stamp). The easiest way to ensure uniqueness is with a 64bit counter for each server. That will never cycle (if updated once a nanosecond the last 584 years. A single NFS server would not handle open/lock requests nearly that fast, and a Linux node is unlikely to have an uptime approaching that). This patch removes the 2 ida and instead uses a per-server atomic64_t to provide uniqueness. Note that the lock owner already encodes the id as 64 bits even though it is a 32bit value. So changing to a 64bit value does not change the encoding of the lock owner. The open owner encoding is now 4 bytes larger. 2023-04-11NFS: Convert buffered read paths to use netfs when fscache is enabledDave Wysochanski
Convert the NFS buffered read code paths to corresponding netfs APIs, but only when fscache is configured and enabled. The netfs API defines struct netfs_request_ops which must be filled in by the network filesystem. For NFS, we only need to define 5 of the functions, the main one being the issue_read() function. The issue_read() function is called by the netfs layer when a read cannot be fulfilled locally, and must be sent to the server (either the cache is not active, or it is active but the data is not available). Once the read from the server is complete, netfs requires a call to netfs_subreq_terminated() which conveys either how many bytes were read successfully, or an error. Note that issue_read() is called with a structure, netfs_io_subrequest, which defines the IO requested, and contains a start and a length (both in bytes), and assumes the underlying netfs will return a either an error on the whole region, or the number of bytes successfully read. The NFS IO path is page based and the main APIs are the pgio APIs defined in pagelist.c. For the pgio APIs, there is no way for the caller to know how many RPCs will be sent and how the pages will be broken up into underlying RPCs, each of which will have their own completion and return code. In contrast, netfs is subrequest based, a single subrequest may contain multiple pages, and a single subrequest is initiated with issue_read() and terminated with netfs_subreq_terminated(). Thus, to utilze the netfs APIs, NFS needs some way to accommodate the netfs API requirement on the single response to the whole subrequest, while also minimizing disruptive changes to the NFS pgio layer. The approach taken with this patch is to allocate a small structure for each nfs_netfs_issue_read() call, store the final error and number of bytes successfully transferred in the structure, and update these values as each RPC completes. The refcount on the structure is used as a marker for the last RPC completion, is incremented in nfs_netfs_read_initiate(), and decremented inside nfs_netfs_read_completion(), when a nfs_pgio_header contains a valid pointer to the data. On the final put (which signals the final outstanding RPC is complete) in nfs_netfs_read_completion(), call netfs_subreq_terminated() with either the final error value (if one or more READs complete with an error) or the number of bytes successfully transferred (if all RPCs complete successfully). Note that when all RPCs complete successfully, the number of bytes transferred is capped to the length of the subrequest. Capping the transferred length to the subrequest length prevents "Subreq overread" warnings from netfs. This is due to the "aligned_len" in nfs_pageio_add_page(), and the corner case where NFS requests a full page at the end of the file, even when i_size reflects only a partial page (NFS overread). 2022-07-23nfs: only issue commit in DIO codepath if we have uncommitted dataJeff Layton
Currently, we try to determine whether to issue a commit based on nfs_write_need_commit which looks at the current verifier. In the case where we got a short write and then tried to follow it up with one that failed, the verifier can't be trusted. What we really want to know is whether the pgio request had any successful writes that came back as UNSTABLE. Add a new flag to the pgio request, and use that to indicate that we've had a successful unstable write. Only issue a commit if that flag is set.
