2026-09-16pinctrl: sunxi: add support for the Allwinner A733Andre Przywara
The Allwinner A733 changes the layout of the pinctrl MMIO register frame, but stays otherwise rather close to the previous IP. The main PIO looks similar to the one in the A523, with ports B-K being implemented, each also with the same number of pins per port as on the A523. Use the DT based pinctrl driver to describe just the generic pinctrl properties, so advertise the number of pins per bank, interrupt capabilities and the new quirks. The actual function/mux assignment will be taken from the devicetree. Signed-off-by: Andre Przywara <andre.przywara@arm.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Walleij <linusw@kernel.org>
2026-09-16pinctrl: sunxi: a523-r: add a733-r compatible stringAndre Przywara
The secondary Allwinner A733 pincontroller ("-r") is interestingly not using the same new MMIO frame layout as the main controller, but is in fact very similar to the A523-r one: it has two banks, with 14 and 6 pins each. From the driver's perspective, this is all we care about, so we can re-use the a523-r pinctrl driver for the a733-r, too. The individual pinmux settings are different, so we must not use the a523-r compatible string as a fallback, but we can surely let the same driver care for both the a523-r and a733-r IP, as the pinmux values will be provided by the DT. Add the a733-r compatible string to the match list, without further distinguishing between the two. Should differences be discovered later, we can easily split this up then. 2026-09-16pinctrl: sunxi: support A733 generation MMIO register layoutAndre Przywara
After Allwinner changed the layout of the pinctrl/GPIO IP MMIO register frame only a few years back, the new SoC generation (starting with the A733) changes the layout again: each port now uses 128 instead of 36 or 48 bytes, and the drive level registers move to make space for the new set/clear data registers. Also the PortA registers start at offset 0x80 instead of 0x0 as before, to make room for non-bank specific registers, like the pow_mod_sel registers, at the beginning of the MMIO frame. Finally the IRQ registers move into each bank's region. Add yet another quirk bit to mark this case, and set the existing register offset values to match the new layout. This also requires to add new members to struct sunxi_pinctrl, to accommodate the extra changes. The actual runtime code changes are fortunately minor. 2026-09-16pinctrl: sunxi: refactor IRQ register accessorsAndre Przywara
So far on Allwinner SoCs the registers for controlling the IRQ capabilities of each bank are grouped separately, behind all the pinmux related register for all banks: 0x000 0x024 0x144 0x200 0x220 0x320 PortA PortB ... PortJ <gap> IRQ-A IRQ-B ... IRQ-J The newest SoCs now group the IRQ registers together with the other per-bank registers, so we need to change the accessor functions to account for that: 0x080 0x0c0 0x100 0x140 0x580 0x5c0 PortA IRQ-A PortB IRQ-B ... PortK IRQ-K In preparation for supporting those newer SoCs, pass in the pointer to "struct sunxi_pinctrl" instead of just its member "desc", so that we gain access to the flags, to later determine which of the layout variants we need to use. To simplify that, add a new sunxi_irq_base_reg() function that returns the respective IRQ register base address. Also split off the IRQ control register base offset (0x200) from each IRQ register's offset, so that the individual offsets can be added later separately, to that base address. No functional change at this point, just refactoring. Signed-off-by: Andre Przywara <andre.przywara@arm.com> Signed-off-by: Linus Walleij <linusw@kernel.org>
2026-09-16pinctrl: sunxi: only use PortK special handling on A523Andre Przywara
The Allwinner A523 pinctrl IP requires an exception for addressing PortK, since the registers for this GPIO bank did not fit anymore in the existing MMIO frame. Since the A523 was also the first SoC to actually implement PortK, we just enabled this quirk unconditionally. Now the new Allwinner A733 changed the MMIO frame layout, so PortK can and must be handled without any special code. Mark the special casing for PortK with the ELEVEN_BANKS quirk flag we introduced, so that it will only be used on SoCs using the A523 pinctrl IP. 2026-09-16pinctrl: sunxi: rename SUNXI_PINCTRL_NEW_REG_LAYOUTAndre Przywara
After keeping the pinctrl IP mostly register compatible for almost a decade, in 2021 Allwinner introduced some changes to the register layout, which made us use a flag called SUNXI_PINCTRL_NEW_REG_LAYOUT. Now with their latest SoC (A733), Allwinner changed the pinctrl IP again, so "NEW" isn't really a fitting name anymore. Rename the symbol to SUNXI_PINCTRL_NCAT2_REG_LAYOUT, with "NCAT2" being a name often used in vendor source code to signify this "new" generation of SoCs. Just a rename of the symbol, no actual code changes. 2026-09-16pinctrl: sunxi: A523: fix voltage withstand encodingAndre Przywara
The Allwinner A523 uses the same GPIO voltage "withstand" programming (setting the input level voltage thresholds) as the previous SoCs, but for some odd reason inverts the encoding of 1.8V vs. 3.3V. Add a new bias voltage type to note this difference, and select it for the A523. At the same time also use the newer "CTL" version, which in addition allows to turn off the withstand programming for I/O voltages other than exact 1.8V or 3.3V (for instance for 2.5V sometimes used for Ethernet PHYs). The A523 has that enable register, but didn't use it so far. This fixes eMMC and reportedly Ethernet operation on some A523 boards. 2026-09-16pinctrl: sunxi: keep a shadow copy of the data register output latchesIlya Titov
On Allwinner SoCs, reading a bank's data register returns the pin level, not the output latch, for pins that are muxed as inputs. Writing a GPIO therefore corrupts the output latches of all input-muxed pins in the same bank: the read-modify-write in sunxi_pinctrl_gpio_set() reads back their pin levels and writes those into their latches. This breaks emulated open-drain lines (e.g. a bit-banged I2C bus from i2c-gpio). Such a line is released high by muxing it as input and letting the pull-up raise it, so any concurrent GPIO write in the same bank stores 1 into its latch. Driving the line low afterwards is a non-atomic data-then-mux sequence in sunxi_pinctrl_gpio_direction_output(); if the poisoning write lands between the two steps, the pin actively drives high (push-pull) instead of low. Observed in practice as sporadic glitches on a T507 board bit-banging I2C on port E while other PE GPIOs are toggled. On a scope the failure is unmistakable: on a clock pulse where SCL should fall to GND, the line instead steps *above* its idle high level for the whole low phase — the pad drives a strong push-pull 3.3 V high, higher than the level the pull-up sustains on the loaded bus — before the next transition recovers it. The same can hit SDA, corrupting data instead of clocks. Steps to reproduce on any sunxi board with a bit-banged (i2c-gpio) bus: # background: toggle any other GPIO of the same bank, e.g. line 21 gpioset -c <chip> --toggle 100us 21=0 & # foreground: keep the bit-banged bus busy while :; do i2cdetect -y <bus> 0x50 0x57; done # watch SCL/SDA with a scope or logic analyzer: sporadic clock-low # phases driven high (above the pull-up level) instead of low The bank spinlock cannot help: the racing write is a perfectly valid whole-register RMW that faithfully writes back what the hardware returned. There are no set/clear registers on this IP to write a single bit atomically. Fix it the same way gpio-mmio handles hardware whose data register read does not return the output latch: keep a shadow copy of each bank's latches, base the read-modify-write on the shadow, and only write the register. The shadow is seeded from the hardware at probe time so pins left in output mode by the bootloader keep their state. Pins that reach output mode through the gpiolib paths write their value (and thereby their shadow bit) before the mux switch in sunxi_pinctrl_gpio_direction_output(); pins muxed to gpio_out directly through a pinmux node bypass that path, so sunxi_pmx_set() refreshes their shadow bit from the latch (readable once the pin is in output mode) to keep them driving their pre-existing level. Seeding the shadow reads the PIO registers at probe time, which requires the bus clock to be enabled. The clock was only requested at the very end of probe, after devm_pinctrl_register() had already claimed the pin hogs described in the device tree - which mux pins, and thus access registers, with the clock still gated. Move the request ahead of both. Boards whose bootloader leaves the PIO clock running are unaffected, which is why the pre-existing hog problem has gone unnoticed since commit 950707c0eb5c ("pinctrl: sunxi: add clock support"). 2026-06-11pinctrl: sunxi: a523: Remove unneeded IRQ remuxing flagAndre Przywara
The Allwinner A10 and H3 SoCs cannot read the state of a GPIO line when that line is muxed for IRQ triggering (muxval 6), but only if it's explicitly muxed for GPIO input (muxval 0). Other SoCs do not show this behaviour, so we added a optional workaround, triggered by a quirk bit, which triggers remuxing the pin when it's configured for IRQ, while we need to read its value. For some reasons this quirk flag was copied over to newer SoCs, even though they don't show this behaviour, and the GPIO data register reflects the true GPIO state even with a pin muxed to IRQ trigger. Remove the unneeded quirk from the A523 family, where it's definitely not needed (confirmed by experiments), and where it actually breaks, because the workaround is not compatible with the newer generation pinctrl IP used in that chip. Together with a DT change this fixes GPIO IRQ operation on the A523 family of SoCs, as for instance used for the SD card detection. 2026-03-23pinctrl: sunxi: pass down flags to pinctrl routinesAndre Przywara
Recent changes in the Allwinner pinctrl/GPIO IP made us add some quirks, which the new SoCs (A523 family) need to use. We now have a comfortable "flags" field on the per-SoC setup side, to tag those quirks we need, but were translating those flag bits into specific fields for runtime use, in the init routine. Now the newest Allwinner GPIO IP adds even more quirks and exceptions, some of a boolean nature. To avoid inventing various new boolean flags for the runtime struct sunxi_pinctrl, let's just directly pass on the flags variable used by the setup code, so runtime can check for those various quirk bits directly. Rename the "variant" member to "flags", and directly copy the value from the setup code into there. Move the variant masking from the init routine to the functions which actually use the "variant" value. This mostly paves the way for the new A733 IP generation, which needs more quirks to be checked at runtime. 2026-02-24pinctrl: sunxi: Implement gpiochip::get_direction()Chen-Yu Tsai
After commit 471e998c0e31 ("gpiolib: remove redundant callback check"), a warning will be printed if the gpio driver does not implement this callback. The warning was added in commit e623c4303ed1 ("gpiolib: sanitize the return value of gpio_chip::get_direction()"), but was masked by the "redundant" check. The warning can be triggered by any action that calls the callback, such as dumping the GPIO state from /sys/kernel/debug/gpio. Implement it for the sunxi driver. This is simply a matter of reading out the mux value from the registers, then checking if it is one of the GPIO functions and which direction it is. 2026-02-21Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL argumentsLinus Torvalds
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2025-03-13pinctrl: sunxi: allow reading mux values from DTAndre Przywara
So far every Allwinner SoC needs a large table in the kernel code, to describe the mapping between the pinctrl function names ("uart") and the actual pincontroller mux value to be written into the registers. This adds a lot of data into a single image kernel, and also looks somewhat weird, as the DT can easily store the mux value. Add some code that allows to avoid that table: the struct that describes the existing pins will be build at *runtime*, based on very basic information provided by the respective SoC's pinctrl driver. This consists of the number of pins per bank, plus information which bank provides IRQ support, along with the mux value to use for that. The code will then iterate over all children of the pincontroller DT node (which describe each pin group), and populate that struct with the mapping between function names and mux values. The only thing that needs adding in the DT is a property with that value, per pin group. When this table is built, it will be handed over to the existing sunxi pinctrl driver, which cannot tell a difference between a hardcoded struct and this new one built at runtime. 2025-03-13pinctrl: sunxi: support moved power configuration registersAndre Przywara
The Allwinner pincontroller IP features some registers to control the withstand voltage of each pin group. So far those registers were always located at the same offset, but the A523 SoC has moved them (probably to accommodate all eleven pin banks). Add a flag to note this feature, and use that to program the registers either at offset 0x340 or 0x380. So far no pincontroller driver uses this flag, but we need it for the upcoming A523 support. 2025-03-13pinctrl: sunxi: move bank K register offsetAndre Przywara
The Allwinner pincontroller register layout used to allow for at least 11 banks per controller, any more banks would reside at a second controller instance. When the per-bank register map size was increased with the D1, it turned out that the last bank (port K) of those maximum 11 banks actually would not fit anymore in the 512 bytes reserved for the pincontroller registers. On new SoCs Allwinner thus moved the last bank beyond the existing registers, at offset 0x500. So far SoCs never used more than 9 banks per controller, but the new Allwinner A523 actually uses all 11 banks. Since that SoC also uses the extended layout, its PortK needs to be programmed at offset 0x500. Factor out the bank offset calculation into a new function, and handle the case for the last bank separately. Since none of the older SoCs ever used PortK, we can ignore this case, and just always use offset 0x500 for the last bank. 2025-03-13pinctrl: sunxi: increase number of GPIO bank regulatorsAndre Przywara
By design, the Allwinner pinctrl IP always supported up to 11 GPIO banks, though no SoC ever used more than 9 banks so far. The Allwinner A523 has pins in all 11 banks, which exceeds the number of per-bank regulators that we currently support, as this was set to 9. Increase the size of the array to hold up to 11 regulator structs, to support pins in bank J and K as well. 2025-03-13pinctrl: sunxi: refactor pinctrl variants into flagsAndre Przywara
For some Allwinner SoCs we have one pinctrl driver caring for multiple very similar chips, and are tagging certain pins with a variant bitmask. The Allwinner D1 introduced a slightly extended register layout, and we were abusing this variant mask to convey this bit of information into the common code part. Now there will be more pinctrl device properties to consider (has PortF voltage switch, for instance), so shoehorning this into the variant bitmask will not fly anymore. Refactor the "variant" field into a more generic "flags" field. It turns out that we don't need the variant bits to be unique across all SoCs, but only among those SoCs that share one driver (table), of which there are at most three variants at the moment. So the actual variant field can be limited to say 8 bits, and the other bits in the flag register can be re-purposed to hold other information, like this extended register layout. As a side effect we can move the variant definition into the per-SoC pinctrl driver file, which makes it more obvious that this is just a private definition, only relevant for this particular table. This also changes the artificial sun20i-d1 "variant" into the actual flag bit that we are after. The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. Starting with the D1/D1s/T113 SoC, Allwinner changed the layout of the pinctrl registers. This new layout widens the drive level field, which affects the pull register offset and the overall bank size. As a first step to support this, combine the register and offset calculation functions, and refactor the math to depend on one constant for field widths instead of three. This minimizes the code size impact of making some of the factors dynamic. While rewriting these functions, move them to the implementation file, since that is the only file where they are used. And make the comment more generic, without mentioning specific offsets/sizes. The callers are updated to expect a shifted mask, and to use consistent terminology (reg/shift/mask/val).
