2026-10-06net: dsa: qca8k: fail mgmt Ethernet MDIO access on busy wait errorsYongzhao Chen
qca8k_phy_eth_command() polls MASTER_CTRL over management Ethernet until BUSY clears, but only bails out when the poll timed out and the last poll request also failed. If every request succeeds while BUSY stays set, the -ETIMEDOUT is dropped. A read then returns MASTER_CTRL data from a transaction that has not completed, and qca8k_internal_mdio_read() does not fall back to the MDIO bus. A failed poll request does not stop the loop either. qca8k_phy_eth_busy_wait() leaves the value unchanged on failure, so the BUSY test then uses the previous value, or an uninitialized one if the first request fails. Stop polling when a request fails and return the poll error or timeout. The poll-error path also leaked read_skb, which is only consumed when the read request is sent; free it on this path. The Sashiko review of v1 identified the dropped timeout. A userspace model of the driver's functions reproduces it and the poll-error path with scripted BUSY responses and failed poll requests; these cases pass after this change. The polling loop comes from commit 2cd548566384 ("net: dsa: qca8k: add support for phy read/write with mgmt Ethernet"). 2026-10-06net: dsa: qca8k: do not clear MASTER_EN after a failed page selectYongzhao Chen
qca8k_mdio_write() and qca8k_mdio_read() take the common exit path when selecting the page of QCA8K_MDIO_MASTER_CTRL fails. That path clears MASTER_CTRL[31:16] with a raw write to phy 0x10, reg 0x1f, which only addresses MASTER_CTRL while page 0 is selected. After a failed page select that did not reach the switch, the previous page remains selected. The write can then clear the upper half of an unrelated register at page * 0x200 + 0x3c. No MDIO master transaction has been started at that point, so there is nothing to clean up. Unlock and return the error directly. qca8k_set_page() also keeps the old cached page when the page write fails. If the write did reach the switch, a later access to the cached page skips the page select and reaches the wrong register. Invalidate the cache on failure so that the next access selects the page again. The Sashiko review of v1 identified the stray cleanup write. A userspace model of the driver's functions reproduces both problems by injecting page-select failures with and without a hardware page change; these cases pass after this change. The cleanup write comes from commit 759bafb8a322 ("net: dsa: qca8k: add support for internal phy and internal mdio"), and the stale page cache from commit ba5707ec58cf ("net: dsa: qca8k: handle qca8k_set_page errors"). 2026-10-06net: dsa: qca8k: propagate MDIO errorsYongzhao Chen
qca8k_mii_write32() ignores errors from both 16-bit half-word writes. Its callers (register writes and read-modify-write helpers) then return the earlier successful page selection or read result, incorrectly reporting success even when writing the switch register failed. Propagate write errors from both the low and high half-words through the regmap paths and internal MDIO master transactions. Attempt to clear MASTER_EN even if a transaction fails, preserving the initial error, and report a cleanup failure if the transaction itself succeeded. Preserve the existing Ethernet-to-MDIO fallback order. Propagate read errors through the internal and legacy MDIO bus callbacks instead of masking them as 0xffff. Returning 0xffff causes PHY read-modify-write callers to treat the failed read as valid register data, which can corrupt unrelated bits on writeback. Stop polling when reading the MDIO busy status fails, and return the error immediately. Because the read helper clears its output on failure, checking only the BUSY bit mistakes an unsuccessful read for transaction completion. Code inspection found these problems. Fault injection into a userspace model of the driver's functions reproduces them; the corresponding cases pass after this change. qca8k_mii_write32() has not returned write errors since its introduction in commit 6b93fb46480a ("net-next: dsa: add new driver for qca8xxx family"). 2026-06-11net: dsa: qca8k: fix led devicename when using external mdio busGeorge Moussalem
The qca8k dsa switch can use either an external or internal mdio bus. This depends on whether the mdio node is defined under the switch node itself. Upon registering the internal mdio bus, the internal_mdio_bus of the dsa switch is assigned to this bus. When an external mdio bus is used, the driver still uses the internal_mdio_bus id which is used to create the device names of the leds. This leads to the leds being prefixed with '(efault)' as the internal_mii_bus is null. So let's fix this by adding a null check and use the devicename of the external bus instead when an external bus is configured. irq_domain_add_*() interfaces are going away as being obsolete now. Switch to the preferred irq_domain_create_*() ones. Those differ in the node parameter: They take more generic struct fwnode_handle instead of struct device_node. Therefore, of_fwnode_handle() is added around the original parameter. Note some of the users can likely use dev->fwnode directly instead of indirect of_fwnode_handle(dev->of_node). But dev->fwnode is not guaranteed to be set for all, so this has to be investigated on case to case basis (by people who can actually test with the HW). Most of the logic in qca8k_port_bridge_join() and qca8k_port_bridge_leave() is the same. Refactor to reduce duplication and prepare for reusing the code for implementing bridge port isolation. dsa_port_offloads_bridge_dev() is used instead of dsa_port_offloads_bridge(), passing the bridge in as a struct netdevice *, as we won't have a struct dsa_bridge in qca8k_port_bridge_flags(). The error handling is changed slightly in the bridge leave case, returning early and emitting an error message when a regmap access fails. This shouldn't matter in practice, as there isn't much we can do if communication with the switch breaks down in the middle of reconfiguration. qca8k_port_bridge_join() set QCA8K_PORT_LOOKUP_CTRL() for i == port twice, once in the loop handling all other port's masks, and finally at the end with the accumulated port_mask. The first time it would incorrectly set the port's own bit in the mask, only to correct the mistake a moment later. qca8k_port_bridge_leave() had the same issue, but here the regmap_clear_bits() was a no-op rather than setting an unintended value. Remove the duplicate assignment by skipping the whole loop iteration for i == port. The unintended bit setting doesn't seem to have any negative effects (even when not reverted right away), so the change is submitted as a simple cleanup rather than a fix. 2024-01-05net: dsa: qca8k: assign ds->user_mii_bus only for the non-OF caseVladimir Oltean
To simplify reasoning about why the DSA framework provides the ds->user_mii_bus functionality, drivers should only use it if they need to. The qca8k driver appears to also use it simply as storage for a pointer, which is not a good enough reason to make the core much more difficult to follow. ds->user_mii_bus is useful for only 2 cases: 1. The driver probes on platform_data (no OF) 2. The driver probes on OF, but there is no OF node for the MDIO bus. It is unclear if case (1) is supported with qca8k. It might not be: the driver might crash when of_device_get_match_data() returns NULL and then it dereferences priv->info without NULL checking. Anyway, let us limit the ds->user_mii_bus usage only to the above cases, and not assign it when an OF node is present. The bus->phy_mask assignment follows along with the movement, because __of_mdiobus_register() overwrites this bus field anyway. The value set by the driver only matters for the non-OF code path. 2024-01-05net: dsa: qca8k: skip MDIO bus creation if its OF node has status = "disabled"Vladimir Oltean
Currently the driver calls the non-OF devm_mdiobus_register() rather than devm_of_mdiobus_register() for this case, but it seems to rather be a confusing coincidence, and not a real use case that needs to be supported. If the device tree says status = "disabled" for the MDIO bus, we shouldn't need an MDIO bus at all. Instead, just exit as early as possible and do not call any MDIO API. 2024-01-05net: dsa: qca8k: put MDIO bus OF node on qca8k_mdio_register() failureVladimir Oltean
of_get_child_by_name() gives us an OF node with an elevated refcount, which should be dropped when we're done with it. This is so that, if (of_node_check_flag(node, OF_DYNAMIC)) is true, the node's memory can eventually be freed. There are 2 distinct paths to be considered in qca8k_mdio_register(): - devm_of_mdiobus_register() succeeds: since commit 3b73a7b8ec38 ("net: mdio_bus: add refcounting for fwnodes to mdiobus"), the MDIO core treats this well. - devm_of_mdiobus_register() or anything up to that point fails: it is the duty of the qca8k driver to release the OF node. This change addresses the second case by making sure that the OF node reference is not leaked. The "mdio" node may be NULL, but of_node_put(NULL) is safe. 2023-10-06net: dsa: qca8k: fix potential MDIO bus conflict when accessing internal ↵Marek Behún
PHYs via management frames Besides the QCA8337 switch the Turris 1.x device has on it's MDIO bus also Micron ethernet PHY (dedicated to the WAN port). We've been experiencing a strange behavior of the WAN ethernet interface, wherein the WAN PHY started timing out the MDIO accesses, for example when the interface was brought down and then back up. Bisecting led to commit 2cd548566384 ("net: dsa: qca8k: add support for phy read/write with mgmt Ethernet"), which added support to access the QCA8337 switch's internal PHYs via management ethernet frames. Connecting the MDIO bus pins onto an oscilloscope, I was able to see that the MDIO bus was active whenever a request to read/write an internal PHY register was done via an management ethernet frame. My theory is that when the switch core always communicates with the internal PHYs via the MDIO bus, even when externally we request the access via ethernet. This MDIO bus is the same one via which the switch and internal PHYs are accessible to the board, and the board may have other devices connected on this bus. An ASCII illustration may give more insight: +---------+ +----| | | | WAN PHY | | +--| | | | +---------+ | | | | +----------------------------------+ | | | QCA8337 | MDC | | | +-------+ | ------o-+--|--------o------------o--| | | MDIO | | | | | PHY 1 |-|--to RJ45 --------o--|---o----+---------o--+--| | | | | | | | +-------+ | | +-------------+ | o--| | | | | MDIO MDC | | | | PHY 2 |-|--to RJ45 eth1 | | | o--+--| | | -----------|-|port0 | | | +-------+ | | | | | o--| | | | | switch core | | | | PHY 3 |-|--to RJ45 | +-------------+ o--+--| | | | | | +-------+ | | | o--| ... | | +----------------------------------+ When we send a request to read an internal PHY register via an ethernet management frame via eth1, the switch core receives the ethernet frame on port 0 and then communicates with the internal PHY via MDIO. At this time, other potential devices, such as the WAN PHY on Turris 1.x, cannot use the MDIO bus, since it may cause a bus conflict. Fix this issue by locking the MDIO bus even when we are accessing the PHY registers via ethernet management frames. 2023-10-06net: dsa: qca8k: fix regmap bulk read/write methods on big endian systemsMarek Behún
Commit c766e077d927 ("net: dsa: qca8k: convert to regmap read/write API") introduced bulk read/write methods to qca8k's regmap. The regmap bulk read/write methods get the register address in a buffer passed as a void pointer parameter (the same buffer contains also the read/written values). The register address occupies only as many bytes as it requires at the beginning of this buffer. For example if the .reg_bits member in regmap_config is 16 (as is the case for this driver), the register address occupies only the first 2 bytes in this buffer, so it can be cast to u16. But the original commit implementing these bulk read/write methods cast the buffer to u32: u32 reg = *(u32 *)reg_buf & U16_MAX; taking the first 4 bytes. This works on little endian systems where the first 2 bytes of the buffer correspond to the low 16-bits, but it obviously cannot work on big endian systems. Fix this by casting the beginning of the buffer to u16 as u32 reg = *(u16 *)reg_buf; Fixes: c766e077d927 ("net: dsa: qca8k: convert to regmap read/write API") Signed-off-by: Marek Behún <kabel@kernel.org> Tested-by: Christian Marangi <ansuelsmth@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Christian Marangi <ansuelsmth@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: David S. 2023-08-01net: dsa: qca8k: make learning configurable and keep off if standaloneChristian Marangi
Address learning should initially be turned off by the driver for port operation in standalone mode, then the DSA core handles changes to it via ds->ops->port_bridge_flags(). Currently this is not the case for qca8k where learning is enabled unconditionally in qca8k_setup for every user port. Handle ports configured in standalone mode by making the learning configurable and not enabling it by default. 2023-07-26net: dsa: Explicitly include correct DT includesRob Herring
The DT of_device.h and of_platform.h date back to the separate of_platform_bus_type before it as merged into the regular platform bus. As part of that merge prepping Arm DT support 13 years ago, they "temporarily" include each other. They also include platform_device.h and of.h. As a result, there's a pretty much random mix of those include files used throughout the tree. In order to detangle these headers and replace the implicit includes with struct declarations, users need to explicitly include the correct includes.
