2026-09-08media: usbtv: fix null-pointer dereference on disconnectAleksandr Nogikh
A null-pointer dereference can occur in usb_make_path() when called from usbtv_querycap() (and other ioctl handlers) during device disconnection. Oops: general protection fault, probably for non-canonical address 0xdffffc000000000a: 0000 [#1] SMP KASAN NOPTI KASAN: null-ptr-deref in range [0x0000000000000050-0x0000000000000057] RIP: 0010:usb_make_path include/linux/usb.h:985 [inline] RIP: 0010:usbtv_querycap+0x9c/0x100 drivers/media/usb/usbtv/usbtv-video.c:612 ... When the device is disconnected, usbtv_disconnect() sets usbtv->udev = NULL without holding the usbtv->v4l2_lock mutex. Concurrently, an ioctl handler like usbtv_querycap() can be executing under the v4l2_lock and attempt to use usbtv->udev, leading to a crash. To fix this, move the usbtv->udev = NULL assignment into usbtv_video_free() and protect it with mutex_lock(&usbtv->v4l2_lock). This ensures that no non-queue ioctl handler can run concurrently with the pointer being nullified. If an ioctl is already running, the mutex will block the disconnect path until the ioctl finishes. If an ioctl is blocked waiting for the lock, it will acquire it after the disconnect routine releases it, but will then check video_is_registered() (which was cleared by vb2_video_unregister_device()) and safely return -ENODEV. Acquiring v4l2_lock after vb2_video_unregister_device() avoids reintroducing a historical deadlock issue, and usbtv_audio_free() remains safe as it is called before usbtv_video_free(). 2026-07-28media: usbtv: Fix V4L2 refcount leak on probe failureGuangshuo Li
usbtv_probe() allocates usbtv before usbtv_video_init() registers its embedded v4l2_device. v4l2_device_register() initializes the reference count to one, with usbtv_release() providing the final cleanup. If video_register_device() fails, usbtv_video_init() unregisters the V4L2 device and returns an error without dropping the initial v4l2_device reference. The probe error path then calls kfree() on usbtv directly, leaving the reference stranded and bypassing usbtv_release(). Leave the initialized V4L2 device intact on this failure path. After releasing the USB reference, call v4l2_device_put() so the final reference invokes usbtv_release(). Retain the direct kfree() path for failures that occur before v4l2_device_register(). This issue was found by a static analysis tool I am developing. Signed-off-by: Guangshuo Li <lgs201920130244@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Hans Verkuil <hverkuil+cisco@kernel.org>
2026-07-15media: usbtv: keep device alive while ALSA card existsShuangpeng Bai
The ALSA PCM callbacks store the driver state in pcm->private_data. An open PCM file can outlive USB disconnect because usbtv_audio_free() uses snd_card_free_when_closed(). The disconnect path can then drop the V4L2 device reference and free struct usbtv before ALSA releases the substream, so a later close dereferences freed memory in snd_usbtv_pcm_close(). Take a V4L2 device reference for the ALSA card and drop it from the card private_free callback. This keeps struct usbtv valid until ALSA has closed the remaining files and freed the card. 2026-03-16media: usbtv: drop redundant device referenceJohan Hovold
Driver core holds a reference to the USB interface and its parent USB device while the interface is bound to a driver and there is no need to take additional references unless the structures are needed after disconnect. Drop the redundant device reference to reduce cargo culting, make it easier to spot drivers where an extra reference is needed, and reduce the risk of memory leaks when drivers fail to release it. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>
2025-06-17media: usbtv: Lock resolution while streamingLudwig Disterhof
When an program is streaming (ffplay) and another program (qv4l2) changes the TV standard from NTSC to PAL, the kernel crashes due to trying to copy to unmapped memory. Changing from NTSC to PAL increases the resolution in the usbtv struct, but the video plane buffer isn't adjusted, so it overflows. 2024-10-28media: usb: drop vb2_ops_wait_prepare/finishHans Verkuil
Since commit 88785982a19d ("media: vb2: use lock if wait_prepare/finish are NULL") it is no longer needed to set the wait_prepare/finish vb2_ops callbacks as long as the lock field in vb2_queue is set. Since the vb2_ops_wait_prepare/finish callbacks already rely on that field, we can safely drop these callbacks. This simplifies the code and this is a step towards the goal of deleting these callbacks. Signed-off-by: Hans Verkuil <hverkuil@xs4all.nl>

2022-03-18media: Kconfig: cleanup VIDEO_DEV dependenciesMauro Carvalho Chehab
media Kconfig has two entries associated to V4L API: VIDEO_DEV and VIDEO_V4L2. On Kernel 2.6.x, there were two V4L APIs, each one with its own flag. VIDEO_DEV were meant to: 1) enable Video4Linux and make its Kconfig options to appear; 2) it makes the Kernel build the V4L core. while VIDEO_V4L2 where used to distinguish between drivers that implement the newer API and drivers that implemented the former one. With time, such meaning changed, specially after the removal of all V4L version 1 drivers. At the current implementation, VIDEO_DEV only does (1): it enables the media options related to V4L, that now has: menu "Video4Linux options" visible if VIDEO_DEV source "drivers/media/v4l2-core/Kconfig" endmenu but it doesn't affect anymore the V4L core drivers. The rationale is that the V4L2 core has a "soft" dependency at the I2C bus, and now requires to select a number of other Kconfig options: config VIDEO_V4L2 tristate depends on (I2C || I2C=n) && VIDEO_DEV select RATIONAL select VIDEOBUF2_V4L2 if VIDEOBUF2_CORE default (I2C || I2C=n) && VIDEO_DEV In the past, merging them would be tricky, but it seems that it is now possible to merge those symbols, in order to simplify V4L dependencies. Let's keep VIDEO_DEV, as this one is used on some make *defconfig configurations. 2021-03-11media: usbtv: constify static structsRikard Falkeborn
Constify two static structs which are never modified to allow the compiler to put them in read-only memory. The only usage of norm_params is only read from it in usbtv_configure_for_norm(). Making it const shrinks the resulting ko-file with 300 bytes (tested with gcc 10). The only usage of usbtv_ioctl_ops is to put its address to the ioctl_ops field in the video_device struct. Making it const moves ~1kb to read-only memory. 2021-03-11media: usbtv: Fix deadlock on suspendMaxim Mikityanskiy
usbtv doesn't support power management, so on system suspend the .disconnect callback of the driver is called. The teardown sequence includes a call to snd_card_free. Its implementation waits until the refcount of the sound card device drops to zero, however, if its file is open, snd_card_file_add takes a reference, which can't be dropped during the suspend, because the userspace processes are already frozen at this point. snd_card_free waits for completion forever, leading to a hang on suspend. This commit fixes this deadlock condition by replacing snd_card_free with snd_card_free_when_closed, that doesn't wait until all references are released, allowing suspend to progress. The kzalloc() function has a 2-factor argument form, kcalloc(). Any factors with a sizeof() of "unsigned char", "char", and "u8" were dropped, since they're redundant. 2018-05-25media: usbtv: Implement wait_prepare and wait_finishEzequiel Garcia
This driver is currently specifying a vb2_queue lock, which means it straightforward to implement wait_prepare and wait_finish. Having these callbacks releases the queue lock while blocking, which improves latency by allowing for example streamoff or qbuf operations while waiting in dqbuf. 2018-05-04media: usbtv: Enforce standard for color decodingHugo Grostabussiat
Depending on the chosen standard, configure the decoder to use the appropriate color encoding standard (PAL-like, NTSC-like or SECAM). Until now, the decoder was not configured for a specific color standard, making it autodetect the color encoding. While this may sound fine, it potentially causes the wrong image tuning parameters to be applied (e.g. tuning parameters for NTSC are applied to a PAL source), and may confuse users about what the actual standard is in use. This commit explicitly configures the color standard the decoder will use, making it visually obvious if a wrong standard was chosen. 2018-05-04media: usbtv: Keep norm parameter specificHugo Grostabussiat
The user-supplied norm value gets overwritten by the generic .norm member from the norm_params. That way, we lose the specific norm the user may want to set. For instance, if the user specifies V4L2_STD_PAL_60, the value actually used will be V4L2_STD_525_60, which in the end will be as if the user had specified V4L2_STD_NTSC, since this is always the first bitfield we match the norm value against before configuring the hardware. The norm_params array is only there to match a norm with an output resolution. The norm value itself should not be changed. Make use of the V4L2_STD_525_60 and V4L2_STD_625_50 defines to determine the vertical resolution to use when capturing. V4L2_STD_525_60 (resp. 2017-10-31media: usbtv: fix brightness and contrast controlsAdam Sampson
Because the brightness and contrast controls share a register, usbtv_s_ctrl needs to read the existing values for both controls before inserting the new value. However, the code accidentally wrote to the registers (from an uninitialised stack array), rather than reading them. The user-visible effect of this was that adjusting the brightness would also set the contrast to a random value, and vice versa -- so it wasn't possible to correctly adjust the brightness of usbtv's video output. Tested with an "EasyDAY" UTV007 device.
