2026-09-11HID: hiddev: set report-init policy before device registrationYousef Alhouseen
usb_register_dev() publishes the hiddev character device before hiddev_connect() initializes the report policy. A process that opens the new node immediately can issue a usage ioctl while initialized is still false and trigger usbhid_init_reports(), bypassing HID_QUIRK_NO_INIT_REPORTS. Set initialized before registering the character device so every opener observes the quirk-selected policy. 2026-09-11HID: hiddev: keep state alive through disconnect unlockYousef Alhouseen
mutex_unlock() clears the mutex owner before taking its wait lock. A thread spinning in the final hiddev file release can acquire existancelock after hiddev_disconnect() clears the owner, then free hiddev before the disconnecting thread reaches the mutex wait lock. This causes a use-after-free in the mutex slow unlock path. Give the connection and each open file an explicit reference. Drop each reference only after its existancelock critical section has completed, so neither unlock path can free the mutex while the other is still using it. 2026-08-03HID: pidff: fix OOB write when hid->inputs is emptyBaul Lee
hid_pidff_init_with_quirks() derives its input_dev from list_entry(hid->inputs.next, struct hid_input, list) without first checking that hid->inputs is non-empty. The list member of struct hid_input is at offset 0, so on an empty list list_entry() yields &hid->inputs itself and the following hidinput->input load reads an unrelated member of struct hid_device. dev is then a type-confused pointer, and force-feedback init writes through it: each set_bit(FF_*, dev->ffbit) stores 8 bytes at dev + 192, past the end of the object dev actually aliases, and input_ff_create() adds further writes of a heap pointer and two function pointers. Until hid-universal-pidff the only caller was hid_pidff_init() from usbhid, which runs under HID_CLAIMED_INPUT and therefore always has at least one hid_input. universal_pidff_probe() starts the device with HID_CONNECT_DEFAULT & ~HID_CONNECT_FF and then calls hid_pidff_init_with_quirks() directly whenever the descriptor carries a PID usage page, bypassing that gate. A report descriptor whose only application collection is on HID_UP_PID leaves hid->inputs empty while hid_connect() still succeeds through the hidraw claim, so probe reaches the unguarded list_entry(). The write happens in the USB probe path, on the hotplug workqueue, so plugging in a malicious device is enough to trigger it; no attacker software and no logged-in user are required. KASAN reports an 8-byte out-of-bounds write in hid_pidff_init_with_quirks() reached from universal_pidff_probe(). Check for an empty list before deriving dev and return -ENODEV, as the other HID force-feedback drivers already do. universal_pidff_probe() propagates the error and unwinds. 2026-06-10HID: pidff: Use correct effect type in effect updateOleg Makarenko
When updating an existing effect, the effect type from the last created effect was sent to the device instead of the updated one. This caused incorrect reports when a game creates multiple different effects and updates only one that is not the last created. 2026-05-12HID: pidff: Fix integer overflow in pidff_rescaleTomasz Pakuła
Rescaling values close to the max (U16_MAX) temporarily creates values that exceed the s32 range. This caused value overflow in case when, for example, a periodic effect phase was higer than 180 degrees. In turn, rescale function could return values outised of the logical range of the HID field. Fix by using 64 bit signed integer to store the value during calculation but still return only 32 bit integer. 2026-05-12HID: usbhid: replace strlcat with better alternativesMahad Ibrahim
In preparation for the removal of the strlcat() API as per the KSPP, replace the string concatenation logic in hid-core, usbkbd, and usbmouse with struct seq_buf, which tracks the current write position and remaining space internally. The changes implemented include: - Replace device name and phys concatenation with seq_buf_puts(). - Include Struct seq_buf and its initialization. - Include header file of seq_buf. - Replace strlen() with seq_buf_used() on the string buffer which was tracked by seq_buf to increase speed. - Add size_t len in files which did not have it. - Use of strscpy with length in place of strlcat. Testing: This driver was compiled as a module as well as in-built in QEMU with the QEMU basic mouse, and QEMU basic keyboard. The testing was done in the following steps. - Add Hardware Mouse in QEMU checking the usbhid module. - Verify dmesg string name of mouse. - Blacklist hidusb module from auto-loading, and removing the module via rmmod. - Load usbmouse module, and reattach QEMU mouse. - Verify dmesg string name of mouse. - Repeat same procedure on usbkbd module. This aligns the driver with KSPP security guidelines. 2026-04-09HID: usbhid: fix deadlock in hid_post_reset()Oliver Neukum
You can build a USB device that includes a HID component and a storage or UAS component. The components can be reset only together. That means that hid_pre_reset() and hid_post_reset() are in the block IO error handling. Hence no memory allocation used in them may do block IO because the IO can deadlock on the mutex held while resetting a device and calling the interface drivers. Use GFP_NOIO for all allocations in them. 2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>
2026-01-10HID: pidff: Do not set out of range trigger buttonTomasz Pakuła
Some games (mainly observed with Kylotonn's WRC Serises) set trigger button to a random value, or always the same one, out of range. I observed 307 and other values but, for example, my Moza R9 only exposes 128 buttons AND it's trigger button field is 8-bit. This causes errors to appear in dmesg. 2025-11-18HID: pidff: Fix needs_playback checkTomasz Pakuła
A small bug made it's way here when rewriting code to Linux quality. Currently, if an effect is not infinite and a program requests it's playback with the same number of loops, the play command won't be fired and if an effect is infinite, the spam will continue. 2025-09-12HID: pidff: Fix possible null pointer dereferenceTomasz Pakuła
As reported by Dan Carpenter, if the axes_enable field wasn't found, trying to find the axes themselves will result in a null pointer dereference. This could only occur with a broken PID descriptor, but it's worth protecting from. Exit early if the axes_enable wasn't found AND add a gate to the pidff_find_special_keys to exit early if the passed HID field is null. This will protect again null dereferencing in the future and properly return 0 found special keys. 2025-08-15HID: pidff: Add support for AXES_ENABLE fieldTomasz Pakuła
AXES_ENABLE can be used in place of DIRECTION_ENABLE to indicate, which FFB-enabled axes will be affected by a given effect. EFFECT_DIRECTION enables all and uses the first direction only while AXES_ENABLE is a bitmask and bit indexes are the same as the defined GD usages in the EFFECT_DIRECTION array. Each axis can have it's own direction in this case. Search for AXES_ENABLE, set AXES_ENABLE for all axes if DIRECTION_ENABLE is not used. Search for specific axes in the direction array. Save their indexes. This let us know what axes are actually available on the device and which bit in the AXES_ENABLE field corresponds to which axis. 2025-08-15HID: pidff: Use direction fix only for conditional effectsTomasz Pakuła
The already fixed bug in SDL only affected conditional effects. This should fix FFB in Forza Horizion 4/5 on Moza Devices as Forza Horizon flips the constant force direction instead of using negative magnitude values. Changing the direction in the effect directly in pidff_upload_effect() would affect it's value in further operations like comparing to the old effect and/or just reading the effect values in the user application. This, in turn, would lead to constant PID_SET_EFFECT spam as the effect direction would constantly not match the value that's set by the application. This way, it's still transparent to any software/API. Only affects conditional effects now so it's better for it to explicitly state that in the name. If any HW ever needs fixed direction for other effects, we'll add more quirks.
