Plane state duplication preserves ignore_damage_clips. Once fbdev sets
it for a dumb buffer, later updates using rendered resources continue to
ignore damage because the flag is never cleared.
Assign ignore_damage_clips on every atomic check so rendered resources
can use supplied damage after an earlier dumb-buffer update.

virtio_gpu_plane_atomic_check() unconditionally ignores FB_DAMAGE_CLIPS
when the framebuffer changes. This forces a full resource flush on every
page flip when a compositor rotates through multiple framebuffers, even
when userspace supplies accumulated per-buffer damage.
The full update is required for dumb buffers because their contents are
uploaded per buffer. Rendered resources are already coherent on the host,
so replacing their damage with the full plane only discards useful
information.
Restrict ignore_damage_clips to dumb buffers. This allows damage-aware
compositors to propagate partial updates through RESOURCE_FLUSH while
preserving the existing full-upload behavior for dumb buffers.

virtio_gpu_cmd_transfer_to_host_{2d,3d}() sync the shmem backing for the
device before the transfer, but nothing syncs for the CPU when a transfer
runs the other way. That breaks two ways. Where the DMA layer bounces, the
device writes into the bounce buffer while the guest keeps reading the
original pages. Where DMA is not coherent, the device writes memory while
the CPU keeps stale cache lines, because nothing reaches
arch_sync_dma_for_cpu(). Either way DRM_IOCTL_VIRTGPU_TRANSFER_FROM_HOST
hands back stale data.
Sashiko originally found this in
https://lore.kernel.org/dri-devel/20260806231002.27B4D1F000E9@smtp.kernel.org
but the suggestion there to fix this with dma_sync_sgtable_for_cpu()
isn't a sufficient fix, for two reasons.
- The transfer is asynchronous. virtio_gpu_cmd_transfer_from_host_3d() only
queues the command, so a sync there would run before the device had written
anything. It belongs on completion, and ahead of any fence signalling.
A waiter woken by the fence would otherwise race the sync and read the
backing pages regardless. It needs its own pass over the reclaim list
rather than a step inside the existing one, because
virtio_gpu_fence_event_process() also signals every earlier fence in the
same context, so any entry in that loop may signal an earlier entry's
fence.
- The transfer is also partial, carrying an offset, a level and a box.
Where the mapping bounces, a sync for the CPU copies the whole mapping
back, so unless the mapping is primed first the regions the device did not
write come back holding whatever the bounce buffer contained, discarding
data the guest owned.
So the fix: Prime the mapping before queueing, tag the vbuffer, and sync
for the CPU on completion before the fence is signalled.
A second transfer must not snapshot the mapping while an earlier one is
still in flight, or the snapshot would predate whatever the CPU wrote once
the earlier fence signalled and the later sync would discard it.
To mitigate this, wait for outstanding fences under the reservation before
priming.
Neither sync copies anything unless the mapping genuinely bounces:
swiotlb_sync_single_for_cpu() and its Xen counterpart look the address up
in the bounce pool and return early when it is absent. On a platform with
non-coherent DMA they still perform the necessary cache maintenance.
The range cannot be narrowed to the box, since for a non-blob resource
virtio_gpu_transfer_from_host_ioctl() rejects a caller-supplied stride and
layer_stride, leaving the layout to the host and the guest with no way to
work out which bytes the device writes. A host3d guest blob does carry
both, so its extent could be bounded, but the sync is left whole there too
rather than special-cased: priming makes the untouched regions round-trip
unchanged either way.
Behaviour changes worth noting:
- TRANSFER_FROM_HOST can now block, where before it returned as soon as the
command was queued. Repeated readbacks of one resource serialise, and a
readback can wait behind an earlier queued command that touched it, since
virtio_gpu_array_add_fence() tags uploads, execbufs and plane flushes
alike with DMA_RESV_USAGE_WRITE. -ERESTARTSYS was already possible here
via dma_resv_lock_interruptible().
- A CPU write racing an in-flight transfer to the same resource is now
lost, where before it survived and the transfer was lost instead. Priming
captures the pages as of queueing, so a write landing before completion is
overwritten by the sync.
- TRANSFER_TO_HOST can also block now, but only while a guest-bound
transfer on the same resource is outstanding, which happens only for
callers that issue both without waiting.
- Where a batch of completions contains a guest-bound transfer, the sync
pass delays fence signalling for the whole batch. Only bounced pages are
copied and the swiotlb pool bounds it. A batch with no such transfer is
unaffected.
Tested under QEMU on x86 with swiotlb=force and virtio-vga-gl
iommu_platform=on, which forces both preconditions required to hit the
original bug.

virtio_gpu_fence_alloc() can fail due to memory pressure and return NULL,
but its caller like virtio_gpu_init_submit() never checks it. Later,
virtio_gpu_init_submit() passes the NULL fence to
virtio_gpu_fence_event_create(), which unconditionally dereferences it.

virtio_gpu_vram_create() frees the object with a bare kfree(vram) on
both error paths after drm_gem_private_object_init() has run, and on the
second one after drm_gem_create_mmap_offset() has linked obj->vma_node

virtio_gpu_gem_create() owns the reference taken by
virtio_gpu_object_create(). On the drm_gem_handle_create() error path it
calls drm_gem_object_release() instead of dropping that reference.
drm_gem_object_release() is the inverse of drm_gem_object_init() and does
not touch the reference count or call obj->funcs->free(), so it is only
correct as the last step of a destructor, as in
virtio_gpu_cleanup_object(). Using it here leaves the bo at refcount 1
with no remaining reference, so virtio_gpu_free_object() never runs and
the shmem pages, sg table and virtio_gpu_object are leaked. Since
virtio_gpu_object_create() has already set bo->created,
VIRTIO_GPU_CMD_RESOURCE_UNREF is not queued either, leaking the host-side
resource and the resource id.
drm_gem_handle_create_tail() drops the handle reference on all of its
internal error paths, so the caller only has to drop its own. Use
drm_gem_object_put(), matching the success path below.

virtio_gpu_execbuffer_ioctl() reserves a DRM event with
drm_event_reserve_init() when VIRTGPU_EXECBUF_RING_IDX selects a ring that
userspace has enabled polling for. virtio_gpu_init_submit() does this
before the BO handles, the command buffer, the syncobj arrays and the
in-fence are processed, so every later error path runs with the event
already pending, including plain argument validation failures such as an
invalid bo_handle or an in-syncobj that carries no fence.
On those paths, virtio_gpu_cleanup_submit() drops the out-fence without
cancelling the event. The fence is freed without ever having been emitted,
taking the only driver-side pointer to the event with it. Closing the DRM
file does not help. drm_events_release() unlinks pending events but
deliberately leaves the freeing to the driver's later drm_send_event(),
which never runs for an orphaned event, so the allocation is leaked
permanently.

Fix by cancelling and freeing the DRM event on the execbuffer error path
before dropping the fence. Clear the fence's event pointer after
cancellation so it does not retain a dangling pointer.

Add display_panic_screen to struct drm_plane_funcs. If set on a plane,
register a panic handler for the plane from the DRM core's panic
handling. Invoke this helper from the core to display a panic screen.
The new callback replaces get_scanout_buffer as signal for panic
support in a plane. Using get_scanout_buffer is now merely a detail
of the implementation. This will also free struct drm_scanout_buffer
for use cases besides panic handling.
With display_panic_screen in place, rename draw_panic_plane() to
drm_plane_helper_display_panic_screen() and make it available to DRM
drivers via drm_panic_helper.h. Do not change the implementation or
functionality of this code. drm_plane_helper_display_panic_screen()
still supports kernel messages, user messages and QR codes on various
color formats.
Then update all drivers that implement panic support. Provide the
initializer macro DRM_PANIC_PLANE_FUNCS that sets display_panic_screen
to drm_plane_helper_display_panic_screen(). If panic handling has
been disabled, it instead clears the callback. There's again no change
in functionality.
This logically splits panic handling into a set of entry points in the
DRM code and a set of helper functions provided by drivers. The core
invokes the driver's helper via callback, while the driver can tailor
the implementation to its needs. Panic handling now works like most
other interfaces in the DRM framework.
Locking and state-handling happens in the DRM core or helpers. Drivers
that receive a call to display_panic_screen can assume that no concurrent
modeset takes place on the plane or its CRTC.
Also update the documentation. Move information about locking and state
guarantees from drm_panic_trylock() to display_panic_screen, where
drivers authors can find it easily. Move information about the features
of the current implementation to drm_panic_helper_display_panic_screen().
v4:
- remove obsolete comment about fbcon interference (Jocelyn)
v2:
- only consider planes with get_scanout_buffer (Sashiko)
- set callback for planes create with drm_crtc_init() (Sashiko)
- return errno code from display_panic_screen

Since commit 860e748bddcc ("drm: ensure blend mode supported if pixel
format with alpha exposed"), drm_mode_config_validate() warns when a
plane exposes an alpha pixel format but not the "pixel blend mode"
property. The virtio-gpu cursor plane (HOST_ARGB8888) trips this.
The virtio-gpu specification does not define the cursor alpha
semantics. The host forwards the cursor pixels verbatim to its display
frontends, and the remote cursor protocols among them (SPICE alpha
cursors, the VNC "Cursor With Alpha" encoding) both define
pre-multiplied alpha, matching what userspace has always assumed when
the property is not attached. Expose a "pixel blend mode" property
advertising only DRM_MODE_BLEND_PREMULTI to make these semantics
explicit and silence the warning. The primary plane only exposes
HOST_XRGB8888, so the call is gated to the cursor. No functional
change.

This is another run of the Coccinelle script for converting kmalloc()
family of allocations to kmalloc_obj() via the existing rules in
scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci
This catches both the set of kmalloc() uses added since the first
kmalloc_obj() conversions in v7.0 and adds a large group missed in the
first pass due to Coccinelle not interacting well with the cleanup.h
scoped_...() family of macros[1]. I worked around this with spatch's
"--macro-file" argument to a file with all the scoped_...() macros mapped
to Coccinelle's YACFE_ITERATOR[2] as that was the closest viable control
flow indicator I could find.
Build tested allmodconfig on x86, arm64, arm, loongarch, mips, powerpc,
riscv, and s390 with no new warnings.

The simple KMS helpers are deprecated because they only add an
intermediate layer between drivers and atomic modesetting.
Open-code drm_simple_encoder_init() by calling drm_encoder_init()
directly and providing driver-local drm_encoder_funcs.
Also check the return value from drm_encoder_init() to avoid silent

On a Xen PV domain page addresses bear no relation to the real machine
addresses the host would have to use to reach it.
virtio_ring.c handles this correctly, vring_use_map_api() returns true
for any xen_domain() regardless of VIRTIO_F_ACCESS_PLATFORM.
virtio-gpu makes the same decision independently, but its copy
looks only at the feature bit:
bool use_dma_api = !virtio_has_dma_quirk(vgdev->vdev);
QEMU does not set iommu_platform on virtio-vga by default, so
VIRTIO_F_ACCESS_PLATFORM is not negotiated, use_dma_api is false, and
virtio_gpu_object_shmem_init() describes the framebuffer's backing pages
to the host with sg_phys(). Those are guest-physical addresses. In a PV
domain they resolve, on the host side, to pages belonging to some other
domain, so the host scans out unrelated memory.
Move the decision into virtio_gpu_use_dma_api() and give it the
xen_domain() check, like vring_use_map_api() has. This
additionally enables the dma_sync_sgtable_for_device() calls in
virtgpu_vq.c, which are required for correctness whenever swiotlb
is in play.
Reproduced with a Xen 4.21 PV dom0 nested inside QEMU 8.2 with
virtio-vga, on both a distro 6.8 kernel and 6.18 LTS. A PVH dom0
works fine and doesn't need this fix because it is identity-mapped,
only PV dom0s are affected.

virtio_gpu_free_vbufs() destroys the vbufs kmem_cache after the virtqueues
have already been released. Commands that were queued but never completed
by the device leave their vbuffers stranded in the virtqueue, so the cache
still holds live objects when virtio_gpu_deinit() tears everything down.
This triggers a WARNING in virtio_gpu_free_vbufs:
BUG virtio-gpu-vbufs (Not tainted): Objects remaining in cache
on __kmem_cache_shutdown()
Drain any buffers still sitting in the control and cursor virtqueues in
virtio_gpu_deinit() after the device has been reset and before the
virtqueues are deleted, following the same pattern used by virtio_console's
remove_vqs(). Each reclaimed buffer is released with free_vbuf(), dropping
the reference on any GEM objects it holds. Pending RESOURCE_UNREF
commands are handled as well: their resp_cb_data still references a GEM
object, so it is cleaned up with virtio_gpu_cleanup_object() to avoid
leaking it on teardown.

There's a large number of vm_get_page_prot(vma->vm_flags) invocations.
Make life easier by introducing vma_get_page_prot() parameterised by the
VMA.
This also makes converting vm_get_page_prot() to vma_flags_t easier.
Also update the userland VMA tests to reflect the change.
No functional change intended.

worker
A probe-time deadlock can occur between the dequeue worker and
drm_client_register(). During probe, drm_client_register() holds
clientlist_mutex and calls the fbdev hotplug callback, which triggers an
atomic commit that ends up sleeping in virtio_gpu_queue_ctrl_sgs()
waiting for virtqueue space. The dequeue worker that would free that
space calls virtio_gpu_cmd_get_display_info_cb(), which invokes
drm_kms_helper_hotplug_event() -> drm_client_dev_hotplug(), attempting
to acquire the same clientlist_mutex. Since wake_up() is only called
after the resp_cb loop, the probe thread is never woken and both threads
deadlock.
Fix this by removing the hotplug notification from
virtio_gpu_cmd_get_display_info_cb(). The display data (outputs[i].info)
is still updated synchronously in the callback.
For the init path, drm_client_register() already fires an initial
hotplug when the client is registered, which picks up the connector
state updated by display_info_cb.
For the runtime config_changed path, add a wait_event_timeout() in
config_changed_work_func() so that display_info_cb updates the connector
data before the hotplug notification is sent. Also replace
drm_helper_hpd_irq_event() with drm_kms_helper_hotplug_event() since
virtio-gpu never calls drm_kms_helper_poll_init() and thus
drm_helper_hpd_irq_event() always returns false without doing anything.

virtio_get_edid_block() validates the read offset only against the
device-supplied resp->size field, never against the fixed-size resp->edid
array. The EDID block index is driven by the device-supplied extension
count, so a malicious virtio-gpu backend can advertise a large size
together with a high block count and read far past the array into adjacent
kernel memory, which is then surfaced in the parsed EDID (an out-of-bounds
read / info leak).
Also reject any read whose end exceeds the size of the edid array.
Conforming EDID responses stay within the array and are unaffected.

dma_fence_unwrap_for_each() internally calls dma_fence_unwrap_first()
which does cursor->chain = dma_fence_get(head), taking an extra
reference. On normal loop completion, dma_fence_unwrap_next()
releases this via dma_fence_chain_walk() -> dma_fence_put().
When virtio_gpu_do_fence_wait() fails and the function returns early
from inside the loop, the cursor->chain reference is never released.
This is the only caller in the entire kernel that does an early return
inside dma_fence_unwrap_for_each.
Add dma_fence_put(itr.chain) before the early return.

virtio_gpu_queue_ctrl_sgs() and virtio_gpu_queue_cursor() use
wait_event() without any abort condition when waiting for virtqueue
space. If the host device stops processing commands, these waits block
indefinitely inside a drm_dev_enter/exit() critical section. Since
drm_dev_unplug(), which is called in device removal and system shutdown
call path, blocks on synchronize_srcu() until all critical sections
complete, device removal and system shutdown also hang.
Add a vqs_released flag to virtio_gpu_device and include it in the
wait_event() condition. Set the flag and wake up both queues in a new
virtio_gpu_release_vqs() helper, called before drm_dev_unplug() in both
virtio_gpu_remove() and virtio_gpu_shutdown(). When the flag is set, the
wait returns immediately and the command is aborted, following the same
cleanup path as drm_dev_enter() failure.

When the host KVM/QEMU resumes from hibernation, it loses all graphics
resources previously submitted by the guest OS, as the QEMU process is
terminated during the suspend-resume cycle. This leads to invalid resource
errors when the guest OS attempts to interact with the host using those
resources after resumption.
To resolve this, the virtio-gpu driver now tracks all active virtio_gpu_objects
and provides a mechanism to restore them by re-submitting the objects to QEMU
when needed (e.g., during resume from hibernation).

virtio_gpu_cursor_plane_update() and virtio_gpu_resource_flush() lock
the framebuffer BO's dma_resv via virtio_gpu_array_lock_resv() and
ignore its return value. The function can fail with -EINTR from
dma_resv_lock_interruptible() (signal during lock wait) or with
-ENOMEM from dma_resv_reserve_fences() (fence slot allocation),
leaving the resv lock not held. The queue path then walks the object
array and calls dma_resv_add_fence(), which requires the lock held;
with lockdep enabled this trips dma_resv_assert_held():

Beyond the WARN, mutating the dma_resv fence list without the lock
races with concurrent readers/writers and can corrupt the list.
Both call sites run inside the .atomic_update plane callback, which
DRM atomic helpers do not allow to fail (by the time it runs, the
commit has been signed off to userspace and there is no clean
rollback path). Moving the lock acquisition to .prepare_fb was
rejected because the broader lock scope deadlocks against other BO
locking paths in the same atomic commit.
Introduce virtio_gpu_lock_one_resv_uninterruptible() that uses
dma_resv_lock() instead of dma_resv_lock_interruptible(). This
eliminates the -EINTR failure mode -- the realistic syzbot trigger
-- without extending the lock hold across the commit. The helper
locks a single BO and rejects nents > 1 with -EINVAL; both fix
sites lock exactly one BO.
Use it from virtio_gpu_cursor_plane_update() and
virtio_gpu_resource_flush(); check the return value to handle the
remaining -ENOMEM case from dma_resv_reserve_fences() by freeing
the objs and skipping the plane update for that frame. The
framebuffer BOs touched here are not shared with other contexts
and lock contention is expected to be brief, so the loss of
signal-interruptibility is acceptable.
Other callers of virtio_gpu_array_lock_resv() (the ioctl paths)
continue to use the interruptible variant.
The bug was reported by syzbot, triggered via fault injection
(fail_nth) on the DRM_IOCTL_MODE_CURSOR path, which forces the
-ENOMEM branch in dma_resv_reserve_fences().
