2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>
2025-06-17mm: rename call_mmap/mmap_prepare to vfs_mmap/mmap_prepareLorenzo Stoakes
The call_mmap() function violates the existing convention in include/linux/fs.h whereby invocations of virtual file system hooks is performed by functions prefixed with vfs_xxx(). Correct this by renaming call_mmap() to vfs_mmap(). This also avoids confusion as to the fact that f_op->mmap_prepare may be invoked here. Also rename __call_mmap_prepare() function to vfs_mmap_prepare() and adjust to accept a file parameter, this is useful later for nested file systems. Finally, fix up the VMA userland tests and ensure the mmap_prepare -> mmap shim is implemented there. 2023-06-21drm: Don't assert held reservation lock for dma-buf mmappingDmitry Osipenko
Don't assert held dma-buf reservation lock on memory mapping of exported buffer. We're going to change dma-buf mmap() locking policy such that exporters will have to handle the lock. The previous locking policy caused deadlock problem for DRM drivers in a case of self-imported dma-bufs once these drivers are moved to use reservation lock universally. The problem is solved by moving the lock down to exporters. This patch prepares DRM drivers for the locking policy update. 2022-11-09drm/i915: use i915_sg_dma_sizes() for all backendsMatthew Auld
We rely on page_sizes.sg in setup_scratch_page() reporting the correct value if the underlying sgl is not contiguous, however in get_pages_internal() we are only looking at the layout of the created pages when calculating the sg_page_sizes, and not the final sgl, which could in theory be completely different. In such a situation we might incorrectly think we have a 64K scratch page, when it is actually only 4K or similar split over multiple non-contiguous entries, which could lead to broken behaviour when touching the scratch space within the padding of a 64K GTT page-table. For most of the other backends we already just call i915_sg_dma_sizes() on the final mapping, so rather just move that into __i915_gem_object_set_pages() to avoid such issues coming back to bite us later. v2: Update missing conversion in gvt Suggested-by: Tvrtko Ursulin <tvrtko.ursulin@linux.intel.com> Signed-off-by: Matthew Auld <matthew.auld@intel.com> Cc: Stuart Summers <stuart.summers@intel.com> Cc: Andrzej Hajda <andrzej.hajda@intel.com> Reviewed-by: Tvrtko Ursulin <tvrtko.ursulin@linux.intel.com> Link: https://patchwork.freedesktop.org/patch/msgid/20221108103238.165447-1-matthew.auld@intel.com

2022-10-31drm/i915/dmabuf: fix sg_table handling in map_dma_bufMatthew Auld
We need to iterate over the original entries here for the sg_table, pulling out the struct page for each one, to be remapped. However currently this incorrectly iterates over the final dma mapped entries, which is likely just one gigantic sg entry if the iommu is enabled, leading to us only mapping the first struct page (and any physically contiguous pages following it), even if there is potentially lots more data to follow. 2022-03-07drm/i915/dmabuf: Fix prime_mmap to work when using LMEMGwan-gyeong Mun
The current implementation of i915 prime mmap only works when initializing drm_i915_gem_object with shmem_region. When using LMEM, drm_i915_gem_object is initialized with ttm_system_region. In order to make prime mmap work even this case, when using LMEM (when using ttm in i915), dma_buf_ops.mmap callback function calls drm_gem_prime_mmap(). drm_gem_prime_mmap() of drm core calls internally i915_gem_mmap() so that prime mmap can perform normally. 2022-02-07dma-buf-map: Rename to iosys-mapLucas De Marchi
Rename struct dma_buf_map to struct iosys_map and corresponding APIs. Over time dma-buf-map grew up to more functionality than the one used by dma-buf: in fact it's just a shim layer to abstract system memory, that can be accessed via regular load and store, from IO memory that needs to be acessed via arch helpers. The idea is to extend this API so it can fulfill other needs, internal to a single driver. Example: in the i915 driver it's desired to share the implementation for integrated graphics, which uses mostly system memory, with discrete graphics, which may need to access IO memory. The conversion was mostly done with the following semantic patch: @r1@ @@ - struct dma_buf_map + struct iosys_map @r2@ @@ ( - DMA_BUF_MAP_INIT_VADDR + IOSYS_MAP_INIT_VADDR | - dma_buf_map_set_vaddr + iosys_map_set_vaddr | - dma_buf_map_set_vaddr_iomem + iosys_map_set_vaddr_iomem | - dma_buf_map_is_equal + iosys_map_is_equal | - dma_buf_map_is_null + iosys_map_is_null | - dma_buf_map_is_set + iosys_map_is_set | - dma_buf_map_clear + iosys_map_clear | - dma_buf_map_memcpy_to + iosys_map_memcpy_to | - dma_buf_map_incr + iosys_map_incr ) @@ @@ - #include <linux/dma-buf-map.h> + #include <linux/iosys-map.h> Then some files had their includes adjusted and some comments were update to remove mentions to dma-buf-map. 2021-07-26drm/i915/gem: Correct the locking and pin pattern for dma-buf (v8)Thomas Hellström
If our exported dma-bufs are imported by another instance of our driver, that instance will typically have the imported dma-bufs locked during dma_buf_map_attachment(). But the exporter also locks the same reservation object in the map_dma_buf() callback, which leads to recursive locking. So taking the lock inside _pin_pages_unlocked() is incorrect. Additionally, the current pinning code path is contrary to the defined way that pinning should occur. Remove the explicit pin/unpin from the map/umap functions and move them to the attach/detach allowing correct locking to occur, and to match the static dma-buf drm_prime pattern. Add a live selftest to exercise both dynamic and non-dynamic exports. v2: - Extend the selftest with a fake dynamic importer. - Provide real pin and unpin callbacks to not abuse the interface. v3: (ruhl) - Remove the dynamic export support and move the pinning into the attach/detach path. v4: (ruhl) - Put pages does not need to assert on the dma-resv v5: (jason) - Lock around dma_buf_unmap_attachment() when emulating a dynamic importer in the subtests. - Use pin_pages_unlocked v6: (jason) - Use dma_buf_attach instead of dma_buf_attach_dynamic in the selftests v7: (mauld) - Use __i915_gem_object_get_pages (2 __underscores) instead of the 4 ____underscore version in the selftests v8: (mauld) - Drop the kernel doc from the static i915_gem_dmabuf_attach function - Add missing "err = PTR_ERR()" to a bunch of selftest error cases Reported-by: Michael J. 2020-09-10drm: i915: fix common struct sg_table related issuesMarek Szyprowski
The Documentation/DMA-API-HOWTO.txt states that the dma_map_sg() function returns the number of the created entries in the DMA address space. However the subsequent calls to the dma_sync_sg_for_{device,cpu}() and dma_unmap_sg must be called with the original number of the entries passed to the dma_map_sg(). struct sg_table is a common structure used for describing a non-contiguous memory buffer, used commonly in the DRM and graphics subsystems. It consists of a scatterlist with memory pages and DMA addresses (sgl entry), as well as the number of scatterlist entries: CPU pages (orig_nents entry) and DMA mapped pages (nents entry). It turned out that it was a common mistake to misuse nents and orig_nents entries, calling DMA-mapping functions with a wrong number of entries or ignoring the number of mapped entries returned by the dma_map_sg() function. This driver creatively uses sg_table->orig_nents to store the size of the allocated scatterlist and ignores the number of the entries returned by dma_map_sg function. The sg_table->orig_nents is (mis)used to properly free the (over)allocated scatterlist. This patch only introduces the common DMA-mapping wrappers operating directly on the struct sg_table objects to the dmabuf related functions, so the other drivers, which might share buffers with i915 could rely on the properly set nents and orig_nents values.
