6 dayssparc64: add seccomp filter supportStian Halseth
sparc is the last architecture besides alpha without SECCOMP_FILTER, which systemd, docker, flatpak and the like all want, and userspace support already exists as a pending libseccomp pull request. Everything the filter mode needs is in fact already in place: syscall_get_arch(), syscall_get_arguments() and syscall_set_return_value() have long been provided for audit and ptrace, TIF_SECCOMP is already in the syscall-entry work mask, and strict-mode seccomp has been wired up for years. What is missing is letting seccomp veto a syscall and honouring the return value it sets. Rework the entry hook accordingly: syscall_trace_enter() now runs the ptrace entry report first and seccomp second (matching the generic entry code, so a tracer's changes are seen by the filter), and returns -1 when the syscall has been denied. On denial the return value and the carry bit have already been set in pt_regs - syscall_set_return_value() for a ptrace abort, the seccomp core for SECCOMP_RET_ERRNO/TRAP/TRACE/KILL - so the assembler stubs must no longer force -ENOSYS; they instead branch to a new linux_syscall_skip path that advances TPC/TNPC past the trap instruction and returns through the syscall exit work without storing a new return value. The old behaviour of a ptrace entry abort (ENOSYS with the carry bit set, followed by the exit report) is preserved, it is just set up in C now. syscall_rollback()'s XXX comment is replaced with an explanation of why a no-op is correct: every caller runs before the syscall has been invoked, and on sparc the first argument register is only overwritten by the return value once the syscall has actually run. SECCOMP_ARCH_NATIVE/COMPAT are defined so the constant-action bitmap cache works for both 64-bit and compat 32-bit tasks. Filter support is 64-bit only for now, as strict mode already was: the 32-bit kernel's entry path has no equivalent plumbing. Tested on an UltraSPARC T4-1: the seccomp_bpf selftest passes 95 of 95 (16 skipped for missing optional features such as uprobes), the libseccomp test suite with its pending SPARC support passes 5190 of 5190 including the live tests, and docker containers run confined by both the default and custom seccomp profiles. 7 dayssparc32: move early memory setup to setup_archMagnus Lindholm
Move the early memory configuration out of SRMMU paging setup and next to the rest of setup_arch(). Derive the PFN limits from memblock, reserve the kernel and initrd there, and retain mem= support with memblock_enforce_memory_limit(). Use for_each_mem_pfn_range() to find the lowmem boundary and set the standard max_pfn variable to the end of physical memory. Use max_pfn as the highmem zone limit and replace last_valid_pfn with max_pfn in LEON's _pfn_valid() check, preserving its existing bounds, including highmem. The removed bootmem code also printed a private HIGHMEM summary. Generic memory initialization already reports the highmem zone, so do not retain the duplicate message. When PAGE_OFFSET maps a relocated kernel, remove memory below phys_base from memblock because it cannot be reached through the linear map. This replaces the equivalent trimming of sp_banks. 8 dayssparc64: decide the TSB huge-page window fixup before the bank switchStian Halseth
The huge-page path in the TSB miss handler has to route a fault taken during a register window spill or fill away from hugetlb_setup(), since a trap stack cannot be built at TL > 1. That test is made after wrpr %g5, PSTATE_AG | PSTATE_MG, %pstate (SET_GL(1) on sun4v) has already switched the global register bank. %g3, holding the fault code, and %g5, holding the PTE, live in the TLB miss handler's globals and do not survive that switch, so the branch to winfix_trampoline passes on whatever the new bank happens to contain: a stale fault code and a garbage fault address. The task is then killed with SIGSEGV pointing at an address that was never mapped. The path predates the fault code being passed at all; it was given one when winfix_trampoline's %g4 requirement was fixed, and the register it reads has been the wrong bank's since. Make the decision before the switch and route to tsb_do_fault, which re-reads both from the MMU after switching banks, rather than entering winfix_trampoline with registers that no longer mean anything. 8 dayssparc64: restore %asi in user_rtt_fill_fixup_commonStian Halseth
A window fill that faults re-enters the kernel through user_rtt_fill_fixup_common(), which does not pass through etrap. rtrap has already set %asi to ASI_AIUP for the fill, and etrap is what would normally re-establish ASI_AIUS from the TSTATE it synthesizes, so the kernel carries on with %asi = ASI_AIUP while the primary context has just been restored to the kernel's. Every %asi-based user access made from there - put_user(), get_user() and everything built on them - then translates in the kernel context. User addresses below the VA hole fault forever, because nothing ever fills a context-zero translation for them, and the CPU is wedged in kernel mode: the task survives SIGKILL, sits in state R at 100% CPU, and takes the machine down once RCU stalls. Addresses above the hole fail more quietly, silently aliasing the kernel linear mapping. Restore the invariant before any user access is attempted. Fixes: 7cafc0b8bf13 ("sparc64: Fix return from trap window fill crashes.") 8 dayssparc64: Fix comparator problem with timer interruptsTony Rodriguez
The tick/stick/hbtick add_compare() implementations program the comparator and then check whether the write took effect in time: exp = read_cnt() + delta_ticks; write_cmp(exp); return (read_cnt() - exp) > 0; A nonzero return value means the expiry time was already reached before the comparator write could take effect, so the interrupt may never fire, and the caller retries with a new expiry: return tick.add_compare(delta_ticks) ? -ETIME : 0; The check only fails the write when the counter has advanced past the expiry time, but not when it is equal to it. In the equal case it is unknown whether the comparator write took effect before or after the counter reached the expiry value, so the compare match - and with it the timer interrupt - may have been missed. add_compare() then reports success, the caller does not retry, and the CPU is left with no pending timer interrupt. This results in stalled hrtimers and RCU stalls / hangs under load, observed on SPARC S7-2 and T7-1 systems: rcu: INFO: rcu_sched detected stalls on CPUs/tasks: rcu: rcu_sched kthread timer wakeup didn't happen for 5259 jiffies! rcu: Possible timer handling issue on cpu=100 timer-softirq=15 Treat counter == expiry as failure as well, so the caller retries with a new expiry time. 8 dayssparc32: advertise relocatable kernel with HdrS 0x0300Magnus Lindholm
HdrS version 0x0300 tells the boot loader that the kernel supports being located somewhere other than physical 0x4000, which is where SILO places the image on the traditional path. Anything older is copied back down there, and refused outright when it no longer fits. sparc32 could not make that claim before, because setup_arch() took phys_base from the lowest memory bank rather than from what PAGE_OFFSET maps to. It can now, so say so. Reviewed-by: Sam Ravnborg <sam@ravnborg.org> Signed-off-by: Magnus Lindholm <linmag7@gmail.com> Message-ID: <20260928002035.1-4-linmag7@gmail.com> Reviewed-by: Andreas Larsson <andreas@gaisler.com> Tested-by: Andreas Larsson <andreas@gaisler.com> Link: https://lore.kernel.org/r/2ed67cfac2dd3847de19eeba566254593a661e93.1790548064.git.linmag7@gmail.com Signed-off-by: Andreas Larsson <andreas@gaisler.com>
8 dayssparc32: derive phys_base from the PAGE_OFFSET mappingMagnus Lindholm
setup_arch() computes phys_base as the base of the lowest sp_banks[] entry, that is, where RAM starts, and assumes the kernel image was loaded there. That holds for the traditional boot path, where SILO places the image at physical 0x4000 and PAGE_OFFSET is mapped to physical 0. It stops holding once the image no longer fits there. SILO loads a kernel between physical 0x4000 and its own text at 0x280000, a window of 2605056 bytes; a current sparc32 kernel is roughly twice that. The loader must then place the image elsewhere in physical memory and map PAGE_OFFSET to it, at which point phys_base describes where RAM begins rather than what PAGE_OFFSET maps to, and the two disagree. phys_base is the offset __pa() and __va() are defined in terms of, so once it is wrong every early translation is wrong by the difference, including the physical addresses written into page table descriptors. The tablewalker then follows pointers into pages that hold nothing while the same tables read back correctly through the nocache view. The failure surfaces as a hang right after the context table pointer is installed and the TLB flushed, with nothing on the console to explain it, since the PROM mappings the early console depends on have become just as unreachable. Ask the MMU what PAGE_OFFSET actually translates to and adopt that. __get_phys() already implements this probe for sun4m and sun4d and returns zero elsewhere. Restrict the probe and diagnostic to these supported platforms so that LEON does not report a bogus kernel address. No new low level MMU access is introduced. Memory below the kernel cannot be reached through the linear map, which runs upward from PAGE_OFFSET, so drop the banks that fall below it rather than leave entries that __va() would translate to below PAGE_OFFSET. With this a 6MB kernel loaded at physical 0x03000000 boots on sun4m: the context table lands at its true physical address, srmmu_inherit_prom_mappings() preserves the PROM console mappings, and srmmu.c needs no change at all, since map_kernel() already handles a non-zero phys_base via do_large_mapping(). The cost is the RAM below the load address the loader chose. SILO's memory_find() picks 48MB on machines with 64MB or more. This removes some more now empty asm/timex.h files as well. * tag 'timers-cleanups-2026-08-17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: calibrate: Rework delay timer calibration treewide: Remove CLOCK_TICK_RATE x86: Use PIT_TICK_RATE instead of CLOCK_TICK_RATE

git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip Pull generic entry code updates from Thomas Gleixner: - Make syscall user dispatching configurable Not all architectures can makes use of syscall user dispatching. Allow them to disable the feature completely. - Consolidate stack randomization for the generic entry code and the architectures using it. Stack randomization on syscall entry was sprinkled throughout the architecture specific low level entry code and in some cases at the wrong points, e.g. before establishing state, which violates the non-instrumentable constraints of that code. Clean this up by integrating stack randomization into the generic entry code helpers so that it is invoked at the earliest possible point right after establishing state and converting all generic entry code using architecture over. - Clean up the syscall number handling in the generic entry code. It works correctly for architectures which have a separate return value storage in pt_regs, but fails to distinguish the case where user space handed in -1 as syscall number from the case where the entry code rejects it by returning -1 to the callers. Aside of that the return value functionality of those interfaces is not really intuitive. Fix this by separating the decision to reject a syscall (user dispatch, ptrace, seccomp ...) from the potential modification of the syscall number through these mechanisms. This solves most of the problems for architectures which do not have a separate return value storage in pt_regs except for the case where a tracepoint has a BPF script or a probe attached which overwrite both the syscall number and the return value. But that's a problem which cannot be solved in the generic code, that only can be addressed by separating the storage model in the affected architectures. * tag 'core-entry-2026-08-17' of git://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/tip/tip: (23 commits) entry, treewide: Make syscall_enter_from_user_mode[_work]() indicate syscall execution entry: Make return type of syscall_trace_enter() bool entry: Rework trace_syscall_enter() entry: Rework syscall_audit_enter() syscall_user_dispatch: Introduce ARCH_SUPPORTS_SYSCALL_USER_DISPATCH entry: Fix seccomp bypass after ptrace with TSYNC x86/entry: Simplify the syscall number logic x86/entry: Get rid of the sys_ni_syscall() indirection x86/entry: Make syscall functions static ptrace, treewide: Rename ptrace_report_syscall_entry() to ptrace_report_syscall_permit_entry() seccomp, treewide: Rename and convert __secure_computing() to return boolean entry: Use syscall number instead of rereading it entry: Remove syscall_enter_from_user_mode() x86/syscall: Use [syscall_]enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() s390/syscall: Use enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() riscv/syscall: Use syscall_enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() powerpc/syscall: Use syscall_enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() loongarch/syscall: Use syscall_enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() entry: Provide [syscall_]enter_from_user_mode_randomize_stack() randomize_kstack: Provide add_random_kstack_offset_irqsoff() ...

2026-05-26genirq/proc: Increase default interrupt number precision to fourThomas Gleixner
Quite some architectures have four character wide acronyms for architecture specific interrupts like IPI, NMI, etc. The default precision of printing the Linux device interrupt numbers is three, which causes quite some code to play games with adding or omitting space after the acronym and the colon in order to keep the per CPU numbers properly aligned. Increase the default number precision to four in the core code and get rid of the space games all over the place. 2026-04-05arch, mm: consolidate empty_zero_pageMike Rapoport (Microsoft)
Reduce 22 declarations of empty_zero_page to 3 and 23 declarations of ZERO_PAGE() to 4. Every architecture defines empty_zero_page that way or another, but for the most of them it is always a page aligned page in BSS and most definitions of ZERO_PAGE do virt_to_page(empty_zero_page). Move Linus vetted x86 definition of empty_zero_page and ZERO_PAGE() to the core MM and drop these definitions in architectures that do not implement colored zero page (MIPS and s390). ZERO_PAGE() remains a macro because turning it to a wrapper for a static inline causes severe pain in header dependencies. For the most part the change is mechanical, with these being noteworthy: * alpha: aliased empty_zero_page with ZERO_PGE that was also used for boot parameters. Switching to a generic empty_zero_page removes the aliasing and keeps ZERO_PGE for boot parameters only * arm64: uses __pa_symbol() in ZERO_PAGE() so that definition of ZERO_PAGE() is kept intact. * m68k/parisc/um: allocated empty_zero_page from memblock, although they do not support zero page coloring and having it in BSS will work fine. * sparc64 can have empty_zero_page in BSS rather allocate it, but it can't use virt_to_page() for BSS. Keep it's definition of ZERO_PAGE() but instead of allocating it, make mem_map_zero point to empty_zero_page. * sh: used empty_zero_page for boot parameters at the very early boot. Rename the parameters page to boot_params_page and let sh use the generic empty_zero_page. * hexagon: had an amusing comment about empty_zero_page /* A handy thing to have if one has the RAM. Declared in head.S */ that unfortunately had to go :) Link: https://lkml.kernel.org/r/20260211103141.3215197-4-rppt@kernel.org Signed-off-by: Mike Rapoport (Microsoft) <rppt@kernel.org> Acked-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> [parisc] Tested-by: Helge Deller <deller@gmx.de> [parisc] Reviewed-by: Christophe Leroy (CS GROUP) <chleroy@kernel.org> Acked-by: Dave Hansen <dave.hansen@linux.intel.com> Acked-by: Catalin Marinas <catalin.marinas@arm.com> Acked-by: Magnus Lindholm <linmag7@gmail.com> [alpha] Acked-by: Dinh Nguyen <dinguyen@kernel.org> [nios2] Acked-by: Andreas Larsson <andreas@gaisler.com> [sparc] Acked-by: David Hildenbrand (Arm) <david@kernel.org> Acked-by: Liam R. 2026-03-03sparc/PCI: Initialize msi_addr_mask for OF-created PCI devicesNilay Shroff
Recent changes replaced the use of no_64bit_msi with msi_addr_mask, which is now expected to be initialized to DMA_BIT_MASK(64) during PCI device setup. On SPARC systems, this initialization was inadvertently missed for devices instantiated from device tree nodes, leaving msi_addr_mask unset for OF-created pci_dev instances. As a result, MSI address validation fails during probe, causing affected devices to fail initialization. Initialize pdev->msi_addr_mask to DMA_BIT_MASK(64) in of_create_pci_dev() so that MSI address validation succeeds and PCI device probing works as expected. 2026-02-26kbuild: Split .modinfo out from ELF_DETAILSNathan Chancellor
Commit 3e86e4d74c04 ("kbuild: keep .modinfo section in vmlinux.unstripped") added .modinfo to ELF_DETAILS while removing it from COMMON_DISCARDS, as it was needed in vmlinux.unstripped and ELF_DETAILS was present in all architecture specific vmlinux linker scripts. While this shuffle is fine for vmlinux, ELF_DETAILS and COMMON_DISCARDS may be used by other linker scripts, such as the s390 and x86 compressed boot images, which may not expect to have a .modinfo section. In certain circumstances, this could result in a bootloader failing to load the compressed kernel [1]. Commit ddc6cbef3ef1 ("s390/boot/vmlinux.lds.S: Ensure bzImage ends with SecureBoot trailer") recently addressed this for the s390 bzImage but the same bug remains for arm, parisc, and x86. The presence of .modinfo in the x86 bzImage was the root cause of the issue worked around with commit d50f21091358 ("kbuild: align modinfo section for Secureboot Authenticode EDK2 compat"). misc.c in arch/x86/boot/compressed includes lib/decompress_unzstd.c, which in turn includes lib/xxhash.c and its MODULE_LICENSE / MODULE_DESCRIPTION macros due to the STATIC definition. Split .modinfo out from ELF_DETAILS into its own macro and handle it in all vmlinux linker scripts. Discard .modinfo in the places where it was previously being discarded from being in COMMON_DISCARDS, as it has never been necessary in those uses. 2026-02-21Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL argumentsLinus Torvalds
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>

This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

2026-02-06sparc: Add architecture support for clone3Ludwig Rydberg
Add support for the clone3 system call to the SPARC architectures. The implementation follows the pattern of the original clone syscall. However, instead of explicitly calling kernel_clone, the clone3 handler calls the generic sys_clone3 handler in kernel/fork. In case no stack is provided, the parents stack is reused. The return value convention for clone3 follows the regular kernel return value convention (in contrast to the original clone/fork on SPARC). 2026-02-06sparc: Synchronize user stack on fork and cloneAndreas Larsson
Flush all uncommitted user windows before calling the generic syscall handlers for clone, fork, and vfork. Prior to entering the arch common handlers sparc_{clone|fork|vfork}, the arch-specific syscall wrappers for these syscalls will attempt to flush all windows (including user windows). In the window overflow trap handlers on both SPARC{32|64}, if the window can't be stored (i.e due to MMU related faults) the routine backups the user window and increments a thread counter (wsaved). By adding a synchronization point after the flush attempt, when fault handling is enabled, any uncommitted user windows will be flushed. 2026-01-22rseq: Implement sys_rseq_slice_yield()Thomas Gleixner
Provide a new syscall which has the only purpose to yield the CPU after the kernel granted a time slice extension. sched_yield() is not suitable for that because it unconditionally schedules, but the end of the time slice extension is not required to schedule when the task was already preempted. This also allows to have a strict check for termination to catch user space invoking random syscalls including sched_yield() from a time slice extension region. 2026-01-07sparc/PCI: Correct 64-bit non-pref -> pref BAR resourcesIlpo Järvinen
SPARC T5-2 dts describes some PCI BARs as 64-bit resources without the pref(etchable) bit (0x83... vs 0xc3... in assigned-addresses) for address ranges above the 4G threshold. Such resources cannot be placed into a non-prefetchable PCI bridge window that is capable only of 32-bit addressing. As such, it looks like the platform is improperly described by the dts. The kernel detects this problem (see the IORESOURCE_PREFETCH check in pci_find_parent_resource()) and fails to assign these BAR resources to the resource tree due to lack of a compatible bridge window. Prior to 754babaaf333 ("sparc/PCI: Remove pcibios_enable_device() as they do nothing extra") SPARC arch code did not test whether device resources were successfully in the resource tree when enabling a device, effectively hiding the problem. After removing the arch-specific enable code, pci_enable_resources() refuses to enable the device when it finds not all mem resources are assigned, and therefore mpt3sas can't be enabled: pci 0001:04:00.0: reg 0x14: [mem 0x801110000000-0x80111000ffff 64bit] pci 0001:04:00.0: reg 0x1c: [mem 0x801110040000-0x80111007ffff 64bit] pci 0001:04:00.0: BAR 1 [mem 0x801110000000-0x80111000ffff 64bit]: can't claim; no compatible bridge window pci 0001:04:00.0: BAR 3 [mem 0x801110040000-0x80111007ffff 64bit]: can't claim; no compatible bridge window mpt3sas 0001:04:00.0: BAR 1 [mem size 0x00010000 64bit]: not assigned; can't enable device For clarity, this filtered log only shows failures for one mpt3sas device but other devices fail similarly. In the reported case, the end result with all the failures is an unbootable system. Things appeared to "work" before 754babaaf333 ("sparc/PCI: Remove pcibios_enable_device() as they do nothing extra") because the resource tree is agnostic to whether PCI BAR resources are properly in the tree or not. So as long as there was a parent resource (e.g. a root bus resource) that contains the address range, the resource tree code just places resource request underneath it without any consideration to the intermediate BAR resource. While it worked, it's incorrect setup still. Add an OF fixup to set the IORESOURCE_PREFETCH flag for a 64-bit PCI resource that has the end address above 4G requiring placement into the prefetchable window. Also log the issue. 2025-11-16mm: consistently use current->mm in mm_get_unmapped_area()Ryan Roberts
mm_get_unmapped_area() is a wrapper around arch_get_unmapped_area() / arch_get_unmapped_area_topdown(), both of which search current->mm for some free space. Neither take an mm_struct - they implicitly operate on current->mm. But the wrapper takes an mm_struct and uses it to decide whether to search bottom up or top down. All callers pass in current->mm for this, so everything is working consistently. But it feels like an accident waiting to happen; eventually someone will call that function with a different mm, expecting to find free space in it, but what gets returned is free space in the current mm. So let's simplify by removing the parameter and have the wrapper use current->mm to decide which end to start at. Now everything is consistent and self-documenting.
