Pull perf tool updates from Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo:
"New features:
- Add 'trace' subcommand for 'perf ftrace', setting the stage for
more 'perf ftrace' subcommands. Not using a subcommand yields the
previous behaviour of 'perf ftrace'.
- Add 'latency' subcommand to 'perf ftrace', that can use the
function graph tracer or a BPF optimized one, via the -b/--use-bpf
option.
E.g.:
$ sudo perf ftrace latency -a -T mutex_lock sleep 1

The original implementation of this command was in the bcc tool.
- Support --cputype option for hybrid events in 'perf stat'.
Improvements:
- Call chain improvements for ARM64.
- No need to do any affinity setup when profiling pids.
- Reduce multiplexing with duration_time in 'perf stat' metrics.
- Improve error message for uncore events, stating that some event
groups are can only be used in system wide (-a) mode.
- perf stat metric group leader fixes/improvements, including arch
specific changes to better support Intel topdown events.
- Probe non-deprecated sysfs path first, i.e. try the path
/sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuN/topology/thread_siblings first, then
the old /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpuN/topology/core_cpus.
- Disable debuginfod by default in 'perf record', to avoid stalls on
distros such as Fedora 35.
- Use unbuffered output in 'perf bench' when pipe/tee'ing to a file.
- Enable ignore_missing_thread in 'perf trace'
Fixes:
- Avoid TUI crash when navigating in the annotation of recursive
functions.
- Fix hex dump character output in 'perf script'.
- Fix JSON indentation to 4 spaces standard in the ARM vendor event
files.
- Fix use after free in metric__new().
- Fix IS_ERR_OR_NULL() usage in the perf BPF loader.
- Fix up cross-arch register support, i.e. when printing register
names take into account the architecture where the perf.data file
was collected.
- Fix SMT fallback with large core counts.
- Don't lower case MetricExpr when parsing JSON files so as not to
lose info such as the ":G" event modifier in metrics.
perf test:
- Add basic stress test for sigtrap handling to 'perf test'.
- Fix 'perf test' failures on s/390
- Enable system wide for metricgroups test in 'perf test´.
- Use 3 digits for test numbering now we can have more tests.
Arch specific:
- Add events for Arm Neoverse N2 in the ARM JSON vendor event files
- Support PERF_MEM_LVLNUM encodings in powerpc, that came from a
single patch series, where I incorrectly merged the kernel bits,
that were then reverted after coordination with Michael Ellerman
and Stephen Rothwell.
- Add ARM SPE total latency as PERF_SAMPLE_WEIGHT.
- Update AMD documentation, with info on raw event encoding.
- Add support for global and local variants of the "p_stage_cyc" sort
key, applicable to perf.data files collected on powerpc.
- Remove duplicate and incorrect aux size checks in the ARM CoreSight
ETM code.
Refactorings:
- Add a perf_cpu abstraction to disambiguate CPUs and CPU map
indexes, fixing problems along the way.
- Document CPU map methods.
UAPI sync:
- Update arch/x86/lib/mem{cpy,set}_64.S copies used in 'perf bench
mem memcpy'
- Sync UAPI files with the kernel sources: drm, msr-index,
cpufeatures.
Build system
- Enable warnings through HOSTCFLAGS.
- Drop requirement for libstdc++.so for libopencsd check
libperf:
- Make libperf adopt perf_counts_values__scale() from tools/perf/util/.
- Add a stat multiplexing test to libperf"

A common problem is confusing CPU map indices with the CPU, by wrapping
the CPU with a struct then this is avoided. This approach is similar to
atomic_t.
Committer notes:
To make it build with BUILD_BPF_SKEL=1 these files needed the
conversions to 'struct perf_cpu' usage:
tools/perf/util/bpf_counter.c
tools/perf/util/bpf_counter_cgroup.c
tools/perf/util/bpf_ftrace.c
Also perf_env__get_cpu() was removed back in "perf cpumap: Switch
cpu_map__build_map to cpu function".
Additionally these needed to be fixed for the ARM builds to complete:
tools/perf/arch/arm/util/cs-etm.c
tools/perf/arch/arm64/util/pmu.c

When reading a perf.data file with register values, there is a mismatch
between the names and the values of the registers because the tool is
built using only the register names from the local architecture.
Reading a perf.data file that was recorded on ARM64, gives the following
erroneous output on an X86 machine:
# perf report -i perf_arm64.data -D

As can be seen, the register names correspond to X86 registers, even
though the perf.data file was recorded on an ARM64 system. After this
patch, the output of the command displays the correct register names:

Add new '__rel_loc' dynamic data location attribute support.
This type attribute is similar to the '__data_loc' but records the
offset from the field itself.
The libtraceevent adds TEP_FIELD_IS_RELATIVE to the
'tep_format_field::flags' with TEP_FIELD_IS_DYNAMIC for'__rel_loc'.

perf_events may sometimes throttle an event due to creating too many
samples during a given timer tick.
As of now, the perf tool will not report on throttling, which means this
is a silent error.
Implement a callback for the throttle and unthrottle events within the
Python scripting engine, which can allow scripts to detect and report
when events may have been lost due to throttling.
The simplest script to report throttle events is:
def throttle(*args):
print("throttle" + repr(args))
def unthrottle(*args):
print("unthrottle" + repr(args))

Commit 48a1f565261d2ab1 ("perf script python: Add more PMU fields to
event handler dict") added functionality to report fields like weight,
iregs, uregs etc via perf report. That commit predefined buffer size to
512 bytes to print those fields.
But in PowerPC, since we added extended regs support in:
068aeea3773a6f4c ("perf powerpc: Support exposing Performance Monitor Counter SPRs as part of extended regs")
d735599a069f6936 ("powerpc/perf: Add extended regs support for power10 platform")
Now iregs can carry more bytes of data and this predefined buffer size
can result to data loss in perf script output.
This patch resolves this issue by making the buffer size dynamic, based
on the number of registers needed to print. It also changes the
regs_map() return type from int to void, as it is not being used by the
set_regs_in_dict(), its only caller.

attribute
To avoid this:
util/scripting-engines/trace-event-python.c: In function 'python_start_script':
util/scripting-engines/trace-event-python.c:1595:2: error: 'visibility' attribute ignored [-Werror=attributes]
1595 | PyMODINIT_FUNC (*initfunc)(void);
| ^~~~~~~~~~~~~~
That started breaking when building with PYTHON=python3 and these gcc
versions (I haven't checked with the clang ones, maybe it breaks there
as well):
# export PERF_TARBALL=http://192.168.86.5/perf/perf-5.9.0.tar.xz
# dm fedora:33 fedora:rawhide
1 107.80 fedora:33 : Ok gcc (GCC) 10.2.1 20201005 (Red Hat 10.2.1-5), clang version 11.0.0 (Fedora 11.0.0-1.fc33)
2 92.47 fedora:rawhide : Ok gcc (GCC) 10.2.1 20201016 (Red Hat 10.2.1-6), clang version 11.0.0 (Fedora 11.0.0-1.fc34)
#
Avoid that by ditching that 'initfunc' function pointer with its:
#define Py_EXPORTED_SYMBOL _attribute_ ((visibility ("default")))
#define PyMODINIT_FUNC Py_EXPORTED_SYMBOL PyObject*
And just call PyImport_AppendInittab() at the end of the ifdef python3
block with the functions that were being attributed to that initfunc.

The objective is to carry size together with build id array, so it's
better to keep both together.

The low level index of raw branch records for the most recent branch can
be recorded in a sample with PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_HW_INDEX
branch_sample_type. Extend struct branch_stack to support it.
However, if the PERF_SAMPLE_BRANCH_HW_INDEX is not applied, only nr and
entries[] will be output by kernel. The pointer of entries[] could be
wrong, since the output format is different with new struct
branch_stack. Add a variable no_hw_idx in struct perf_sample to
indicate whether the hw_idx is output. Add get_branch_entry() to return
corresponding pointer of entries[0].
To make dummy branch sample consistent as new branch sample, add hw_idx
in struct dummy_branch_stack for cs-etm and intel-pt.
Apply the new struct branch_stack for synthetic events as well.
Extend test case sample-parsing to support new struct branch_stack.
Committer notes:
Renamed get_branch_entries() to perf_sample__branch_entries() to have
proper namespacing and pave the way for this to be moved to libperf,
eventually.
Add 'static' to that inline as it is in a header.
Add 'hw_idx' to 'struct dummy_branch_stack' in cs-etm.c to fix the build
on arm64.

Instead of calling a useless (and broken) helper function to get the
next event of a tep event array, just get the array directly and iterate

Note, the broken part was from trace_find_next_event() which after this
will no longer be used, and can be removed.

Also we don't need to include perf_event.h in
tools/perf/lib/include/perf/evsel.h, forward declaring 'struct
perf_event_attr' is enough. And this even fixes the build in some
systems where things are used somewhere down the include path from
perf_event.h without defining __always_inline.
