Under CONFIG_PROVE_RCU_LIST + CONFIG_RCU_EXPERT
hlist_for_each_entry_rcu() provides very helpful splats, which help
to find possible issues. I missed CONFIG_RCU_EXPERT=y in my testing
config the same as described in
a3e4bf7f9675 ("configs/debug: make sure PROVE_RCU_LIST=y takes effect").
The fix itself is trivial: add the very same lockdep annotations
as were used to dereference ao_info from the socket.

ip_send_unicast_reply() send orphaned 'control packets'.
These are RST packets and also ACK packets sent from TIME_WAIT.
Some eBPF programs would prefer to have a meaningful skb->sk
pointer as much as possible.
This means that TCP can now attach TIME_WAIT sockets to outgoing
skbs.

icsk->icsk_pending can be read locklessly already.
Following patch in the series will add another lockless read.
Add smp_load_acquire() and smp_store_release() annotations
because following patch will add a test in tcp_write_timer(),
and READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE() alone would possibly lead to races.

In tcp_recvmsg_locked(), detect if the skb being received by the user
is a devmem skb. In this case - if the user provided the MSG_SOCK_DEVMEM
flag - pass it to tcp_recvmsg_devmem() for custom handling.
tcp_recvmsg_devmem() copies any data in the skb header to the linear
buffer, and returns a cmsg to the user indicating the number of bytes
returned in the linear buffer.
tcp_recvmsg_devmem() then loops over the unaccessible devmem skb frags,
and returns to the user a cmsg_devmem indicating the location of the
data in the dmabuf device memory. cmsg_devmem contains this information:
1. the offset into the dmabuf where the payload starts. 'frag_offset'.
2. the size of the frag. 'frag_size'.
3. an opaque token 'frag_token' to return to the kernel when the buffer
is to be released.
The pages awaiting freeing are stored in the newly added
sk->sk_user_frags, and each page passed to userspace is get_page()'d.
This reference is dropped once the userspace indicates that it is
done reading this page. All pages are released when the socket is
destroyed.

No lock protects tcp tw fields.
tcptw->tw_rcv_nxt can be changed from twsk_rcv_nxt_update()
while other threads might read this field.
Add READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE() annotations, and make sure
tcp_timewait_state_process() reads tcptw->tw_rcv_nxt only once.

Using a volatile qualifier for a specific struct field is unusual.
Use instead READ_ONCE()/WRITE_ONCE() where necessary.
tcp_timewait_state_process() can change tw_substate while other
threads are reading this field.

We found that one close-wait socket was reset by the other side
due to a new connection reusing the same port which is beyond our
expectation, so we have to investigate the underlying reason.
The following experiment is conducted in the test environment. We
limit the port range from 40000 to 40010 and delay the time to close()
after receiving a fin from the active close side, which can help us
easily reproduce like what happened in production.
Here are three connections captured by tcpdump:

As we can see, the first flow is reset because:
1) client starts a new connection, I mean, the second one
2) client tries to find a suitable port which is a timewait socket
(its state is timewait, substate is fin_wait2)
3) client occupies that timewait port to send a SYN
4) server finds a corresponding close-wait socket in ehash table,
then replies with a challenge ack
5) client sends an RST to terminate this old close-wait socket.
I don't think the port selection algo can choose a FIN_WAIT2 socket
when we turn on tcp_tw_reuse because on the server side there
remain unread data. In some cases, if one side haven't call close() yet,
we should not consider it as expendable and treat it at will.
Even though, sometimes, the server isn't able to call close() as soon
as possible like what we expect, it can not be terminated easily,
especially due to a second unrelated connection happening.
After this patch, we can see the expected failure if we start a
connection when all the ports are occupied in fin_wait2 state:
"Ncat: Cannot assign requested address."

Its possible that two threads call tcp_sk_exit_batch() concurrently,
once from the cleanup_net workqueue, once from a task that failed to clone
a new netns. In the latter case, error unwinding calls the exit handlers
in reverse order for the 'failed' netns.
tcp_sk_exit_batch() calls tcp_twsk_purge().
Problem is that since commit b099ce2602d8 ("net: Batch inet_twsk_purge"),
this function picks up twsk in any dying netns, not just the one passed
in via exit_batch list.
This means that the error unwind of setup_net() can "steal" and destroy
timewait sockets belonging to the exiting netns.
This allows the netns exit worker to proceed to call
WARN_ON_ONCE(!refcount_dec_and_test(&net->ipv4.tcp_death_row.tw_refcount));
without the expected 1 -> 0 transition, which then splats.
At same time, error unwind path that is also running inet_twsk_purge()
will splat as well:

This doesn't seem like an actual bug (no tw sockets got lost and I don't
see a use-after-free) but as erroneous trigger of debug check.
Add a mutex to force strict ordering: the task that calls tcp_twsk_purge()
blocks other task from doing final _dec_and_test before mutex-owner has
removed all tw sockets of dying netns.

ipv4_tcp_sk is a per-CPU variable and relies on disabled BH for its
locking. Without per-CPU locking in local_bh_disable() on PREEMPT_RT
this data structure requires explicit locking.
Make a struct with a sock member (original ipv4_tcp_sk) and a
local_lock_t and use local_lock_nested_bh() for locking. This change
adds only lockdep coverage and does not alter the functional behaviour
for !PREEMPT_RT.

The TCP timewait timer is proving to be problematic for setups where
scheduler CPU isolation is achieved at runtime via cpusets (as opposed to
statically via isolcpus=domains).
What happens there is a CPU goes through tcp_time_wait(), arming the
time_wait timer, then gets isolated. TCP_TIMEWAIT_LEN later, the timer
fires, causing interference for the now-isolated CPU. This is conceptually
similar to the issue described in commit e02b93124855 ("workqueue: Unbind
kworkers before sending them to exit()")
Move inet_twsk_schedule() to within inet_twsk_hashdance(), with the ehash
lock held. Expand the lock's critical section from inet_twsk_kill() to
inet_twsk_deschedule_put(), serializing the scheduling vs descheduling of
the timer. IOW, this prevents the following race:
tcp_time_wait()
inet_twsk_hashdance()
inet_twsk_deschedule_put()
del_timer_sync()
inet_twsk_schedule()
Thanks to Paolo Abeni for suggesting to leverage the ehash lock.
This also restores a comment from commit ec94c2696f0b ("tcp/dccp: avoid
one atomic operation for timewait hashdance") as inet_twsk_hashdance() had
a "Step 1" and "Step 3" comment, but the "Step 2" had gone missing.
inet_twsk_deschedule_put() now acquires the ehash spinlock to synchronize
with inet_twsk_hashdance_schedule().
To ease possible regression search, actual un-pin is done in next patch.

Adding a sysctl knob to allow user to specify a default
rto_min at socket init time, other than using the hard
coded 200ms default rto_min.
Note that the rto_min route option has the highest precedence
for configuring this setting, followed by the TCP_BPF_RTO_MIN
socket option, followed by the tcp_rto_min_us sysctl.

tcp_skb_can_collapse() checks for conditions which don't make
sense on input. Because of this we ended up sprinkling a few
pairs of mptcp_skb_can_collapse() and skb_cmp_decrypted() calls
on the input path. Group them in a new helper. This should make
it less likely that someone will check mptcp and not decrypted
or vice versa when adding new code.
This implicitly adds a decrypted check early in tcp_collapse().
AFAIU this will very slightly increase our ability to collapse
packets under memory pressure, not a real bug.

These functions have races when they:
1) Write sk->sk_err
2) call sk_error_report(sk)
3) call tcp_done(sk)
As described in prior patches in this series:
An smp_wmb() is missing.
We should call tcp_done() before sk_error_report(sk)
to have consistent tcp_poll() results on SMP hosts.
Use tcp_done_with_error() where we centralized the
correct sequence.

Jason commit made checks against ACK sequence less strict
and can be exploited by attackers to establish spoofed flows
with less probes.
Innocent users might use tcp_rmem[1] == 1,000,000,000,
or something more reasonable.
An attacker can use a regular TCP connection to learn the server
initial tp->rcv_wnd, and use it to optimize the attack.
If we make sure that only the announced window (smaller than 65535)
is used for ACK validation, we force an attacker to use
65537 packets to complete the 3WHS (assuming server ISN is unknown)

tstamp_type is now set based on actual clockid_t compressed
into 2 bits.
To make the design scalable for future needs this commit bring in
the change to extend the tstamp_type:1 to tstamp_type:2 to support
other clockid_t timestamp.
We now support CLOCK_TAI as part of tstamp_type as part of this
commit with existing support CLOCK_MONOTONIC and CLOCK_REALTIME.

Anderson Nascimento reported a use-after-free splat in tcp_twsk_unique()
with nice analysis.
Since commit ec94c2696f0b ("tcp/dccp: avoid one atomic operation for
timewait hashdance"), inet_twsk_hashdance() sets TIME-WAIT socket's
sk_refcnt after putting it into ehash and releasing the bucket lock.
Thus, there is a small race window where other threads could try to
reuse the port during connect() and call sock_hold() in tcp_twsk_unique()
for the TIME-WAIT socket with zero refcnt.
If that happens, the refcnt taken by tcp_twsk_unique() is overwritten
and sock_put() will cause underflow, triggering a real use-after-free
somewhere else.
To avoid the use-after-free, we need to use refcount_inc_not_zero() in
tcp_twsk_unique() and give up on reusing the port if it returns false.

Reuse the dropreason logic to show the exact reason of tcp reset,
so we can finally display the corresponding item in enum sk_reset_reason
instead of reinventing new reset reasons. This patch replaces all
the prior NOT_SPECIFIED reasons.

While testing TCP performance with latest trees,
I saw suspect SOCKET_BACKLOG drops.
tcp_add_backlog() computes its limit with :
limit = (u32)READ_ONCE(sk->sk_rcvbuf) +
(u32)(READ_ONCE(sk->sk_sndbuf) >> 1);
limit += 64 * 1024;
This does not take into account that sk->sk_backlog.len
is reset only at the very end of __release_sock().
Both sk->sk_backlog.len and sk->sk_rmem_alloc could reach
sk_rcvbuf in normal conditions.
We should double sk->sk_rcvbuf contribution in the formula
to absorb bubbles in the backlog, which happen more often
for very fast flows.
This change maintains decent protection against abuses.

When TCP_TW_SYN is processed, we perform a lookup to find
a listener and jump back in tcp_v6_rcv() and tcp_v4_rcv()
Paolo suggested that we do not have to check if the
found socket is a TIME_WAIT or NEW_SYN_RECV one.

TCP can transform a TIMEWAIT socket into a SYN_RECV one from
a SYN packet, and the ISN of the SYNACK packet is normally
generated using TIMEWAIT tw_snd_nxt :

This was using TCP_SKB_CB(skb)->tcp_tw_isn field in skb.
Unfortunately this field has been accidentally cleared
after the call to tcp_timewait_state_process() returning
TCP_TW_SYN.
Using a field in TCP_SKB_CB(skb) for a temporary state
is overkill.
Switch instead to a per-cpu variable.
As a bonus, we do not have to clear tcp_tw_isn in TCP receive
fast path.
It is temporarily set then cleared only in the TCP_TW_SYN dance.

tcp_v6_init_req() reads TCP_SKB_CB(skb)->tcp_tw_isn to find
out if the request socket is created by a SYN hitting a TIMEWAIT socket.
This has been buggy for a decade, lets directly pass the information
from tcp_conn_request().
This is a preparatory patch to make the following one easier to review.

Prior to this patch, what we can see by enabling trace_tcp_send is
only happening under two circumstances:
1) active rst mode
2) non-active rst mode and based on the full socket
That means the inconsistency occurs if we use tcpdump and trace
simultaneously to see how rst happens.
It's necessary that we should take into other cases into considerations,
say:
1) time-wait socket
2) no socket
...
By parsing the incoming skb and reversing its 4-tuple can
we know the exact 'flow' which might not exist.
Samples after applied this patch:
1. tcp_send_reset: skbaddr=XXX skaddr=XXX src=ip:port dest=ip:port
state=TCP_ESTABLISHED
2. tcp_send_reset: skbaddr=000...000 skaddr=XXX src=ip:port dest=ip:port
state=UNKNOWN
Note:
1) UNKNOWN means we cannot extract the right information from skb.
2) skbaddr/skaddr could be 0

We lost ability to unload ipv6 module a long time ago.
Instead of calling expensive inet_twsk_purge() twice,
we can handle all families in one round.

Currently functions that pre-calculate TCP header options length use
unaligned TCP-AO header + MAC-length for skb reservation.
And the functions that actually write TCP-AO options into skb do align
the header. Nothing good can come out of this for ((maclen % 4) != 0).
Provide tcp_ao_len_aligned() helper and use it everywhere for TCP
header options space calculations.

Similarly how TCP_MD5SIG_FLAG_IFINDEX works for TCP-MD5,
TCP_AO_KEYF_IFINDEX is an AO-key flag that binds that MKT to a specified
by L3 ifinndex. Similarly, without this flag the key will work in
the default VRF l3index = 0 for connections.
To prevent AO-keys from overlapping, it's restricted to add key B for a
socket that has key A, which have the same sndid/rcvid and one of
the following is true:
- !(A.keyflags & TCP_AO_KEYF_IFINDEX) or !(B.keyflags & TCP_AO_KEYF_IFINDEX)
so that any key is non-bound to a VRF
- A.l3index == B.l3index
both want to work for the same VRF
Additionally, it's restricted to match TCP-MD5 keys for the same peer
the following way:

This is done with the help of tcp_md5_do_lookup_any_l3index() to reject
adding AO key without TCP_AO_KEYF_IFINDEX if there's TCP-MD5 in any VRF.
This is important for case where sysctl_tcp_l3mdev_accept = 1
Similarly, for TCP-AO lookups tcp_ao_do_lookup() may be used with
l3index < 0, so that __tcp_ao_key_cmp() will match TCP-AO key in any VRF.

Similarly to TCP-MD5, add a static key to TCP-AO that is patched out
when there are no keys on a machine and dynamically enabled with the
first setsockopt(TCP_AO) adds a key on any socket. The static key is as
well dynamically disabled later when the socket is destructed.
The lifetime of enabled static key here is the same as ao_info: it is
enabled on allocation, passed over from full socket to twsk and
destructed when ao_info is scheduled for destruction.

Similarly to IPsec, RFC5925 prescribes:

errors’), and ICMPv6 Type 1 (destination unreachable), Code 1
(administratively prohibited) and Code 4 (port unreachable) intended
for connections in synchronized states (ESTABLISHED, FIN-WAIT-1, FIN-
WAIT-2, CLOSE-WAIT, CLOSING, LAST-ACK, TIME-WAIT) that match MKTs."
A selftest (later in patch series) verifies that this attack is not
possible in this TCP-AO implementation.

Now there is a common function to verify signature on TCP segments:
tcp_inbound_hash(). It has checks for all possible cross-interactions
with MD5 signs as well as with unsigned segments.
The rules from RFC5925 are:
(1) Any TCP segment can have at max only one signature.
(2) TCP connections can't switch between using TCP-MD5 and TCP-AO.
(3) TCP-AO connections can't stop using AO, as well as unsigned
connections can't suddenly start using AO.

Now when the new request socket is created from the listening socket,
it's recorded what MKT was used by the peer. tcp_rsk_used_ao() is
a new helper for checking if TCP-AO option was used to create the
request socket.
tcp_ao_copy_all_matching() will copy all keys that match the peer on the
request socket, as well as preparing them for the usage (creating
traffic keys).

Add support for sockets in time-wait state.
ao_info as well as all keys are inherited on transition to time-wait
socket. The lifetime of ao_info is now protected by ref counter, so
that tcp_ao_destroy_sock() will destruct it only when the last user is
gone.

Introduce a helper that:
(1) shares the common code with TCP-MD5 header options parsing
(2) looks for hash signature only once for both TCP-MD5 and TCP-AO
(3) fails with -EEXIST if any TCP sign option is present twice, see
RFC5925 (2.2):
">> A single TCP segment MUST NOT have more than one TCP-AO in its
options sequence. When multiple TCP-AOs appear, TCP MUST discard
the segment."

Using precalculated traffic keys, sign TCP segments as prescribed by
RFC5925. Per RFC, TCP header options are included in sign calculation:
"The TCP header, by default including options, and where the TCP
checksum and TCP-AO MAC fields are set to zero, all in network-
byte order." (5.1.3)
tcp_ao_hash_header() has exclude_options parameter to optionally exclude
TCP header from hash calculation, as described in RFC5925 (9.1), this is
needed for interaction with middleboxes that may change "some TCP
options". This is wired up to AO key flags and setsockopt() later.
Similarly to TCP-MD5 hash TCP segment fragments.
From this moment a user can start sending TCP-AO signed segments with
one of crypto ahash algorithms from supported by Linux kernel. It can
have a user-specified MAC length, to either save TCP option header space
or provide higher protection using a longer signature.
The inbound segments are not yet verified, TCP-AO option is ignored and
they are accepted.
