The AHCI spec allows implementations to issue commands in tag order rather than FIFO order: 5.3.2.12 P:SelectCmd HBA sets pSlotLoc = (pSlotLoc + 1) mod (CAP.NCS + 1) or HBA selects the command to issue that has had the PxCI bit set to '1' longer than any other command pending to be issued. The result is that commands posted sequentially (time-wise) may play out of sequence when issued by hardware. This behavior has likely been hidden by drives that arrange for commands to complete in issue order. However, it appears recent drives (two from different vendors that we have found so far) inflict out-of-order completions as a matter of course. So, we need to take care to maintain ordered submission, otherwise we risk triggering a drive to fall out of sequential-io automation and back to random-io processing, which incurs large latency and degrades throughput. This issue was found in simple benchmarks where QD=2 seq-write performance was 30-50% *greater* than QD=32 seq-write performance. Tagging for -stable and making the change globally since it has a low risk-to-reward ratio. Also, word is that recent versions of an unnamed OS also does it this way now. So, drives in the field are already experienced with this tag ordering scheme. There could be a case, when NFSd file system is mounted in network, different to socket's one, like below: "ip netns exec" creates new network and mount namespace, which duplicates NFSd mount point, created in init_net context. And thus NFS server stop in nested network context leads to RPCBIND client destruction in init_net. Then, on NFSd start in nested network context, rpc.nfsd process creates socket in nested net and passes it into "write_ports", which leads to RPCBIND sockets creation in init_net context because of the same reason (NFSd monut point was created in init_net context). An attempt to register passed socket in nested net leads to panic, because no RPCBIND client present in nexted network namespace. This patch add check that passed socket's net matches NFSd superblock's one. And returns -EINVAL error to user psace otherwise. v2: Put socket on exit. 2014-05-05tty: Fix low_latency BUGPeter Hurley

The user-settable knob, low_latency, has been the source of several BUG reports which stem from flush_to_ldisc() running in interrupt context. Since 3.12, which added several sleeping locks (termios_rwsem and buf->lock) to the input processing path, the frequency of these BUG reports has increased. Note that changes in 3.12 did not introduce this regression; sleeping locks were first added to the input processing path with the removal of the BKL from N_TTY in commit a88a69c91256418c5907c2f1f8a0ec0a36f9e6cc, 'n_tty: Fix loss of echoed characters and remove bkl from n_tty' and later in commit 38db89799bdf11625a831c5af33938dcb11908b6, 'tty: throttling race fix'. Since those changes, executing flush_to_ldisc() in interrupt_context (ie, low_latency set), is unsafe. However, since most devices do not validate if the low_latency setting is appropriate for the context (process or interrupt) in which they receive data, some reports are due to misconfiguration. Further, serial dma devices for which dma fails, resort to interrupt receiving as a backup without resetting low_latency. Historically, low_latency was used to force wake-up the reading process rather than wait for the next scheduler tick. The effect was to trim multiple milliseconds of latency from when the process would receive new data. Recent tests [1] have shown that the reading process now receives data with only 10's of microseconds latency without low_latency set. Remove the low_latency rx steering from tty_flip_buffer_push(); however, leave the knob as an optional hint to drivers that can tune their rx fifos and such like. After commit 839a8e8660b6 ("writeback: replace custom worker pool implementation with unbound workqueue") when device is removed while we are writing to it we crash in bdi_writeback_workfn() -> set_worker_desc() because bdi->dev is NULL. This can happen because even though bdi_unregister() cancels all pending flushing work, nothing really prevents new ones from being queued from balance_dirty_pages() or other places. Fix the problem by clearing BDI_registered bit in bdi_unregister() and checking it before scheduling of any flushing work. Add #include <linux/dynamic_debug.h> to printk.h. Unfortunately, this new #include must be after the prototype/declaration of function printk. It may be better to split out these _ratelimited declarations into a separate file one day. Any use of these pr_<foo>_ratelimited functions must also have another specific #include <ratelimited.h>. Most users have this done indirectly via #include <linux/kernel.h> printk.h may not #include <linux/ratelimit.h> as it causes circular dependencies and compilation failures. Commit bf6bddf1924e ("mm: introduce compaction and migration for ballooned pages") introduces page_count(page) into memory compaction which dereferences page->first_page if PageTail(page). This results in a very rare NULL pointer dereference on the aforementioned page_count(page). Indeed, anything that does compound_head(), including page_count() is susceptible to racing with prep_compound_page() and seeing a NULL or dangling page->first_page pointer. This patch uses Andrea's implementation of compound_trans_head() that deals with such a race and makes it the default compound_head() implementation. This includes a read memory barrier that ensures that if PageTail(head) is true that we return a head page that is neither NULL nor dangling. The patch then adds a store memory barrier to prep_compound_page() to ensure page->first_page is set. This is the safest way to ensure we see the head page that we are expecting, PageTail(page) is already in the unlikely() path and the memory barriers are unfortunately required. Hugetlbfs is the exception, we don't enforce a store memory barrier during init since no race is possible. 2014-04-03NFS: fix the handling of NFS_INO_INVALID_DATA flag in nfs_revalidate_mappingJeff Layton
commit d529ef83c355f97027ff85298a9709fe06216a66 upstream. There is a possible race in how the nfs_invalidate_mapping function is handled. Currently, we go and invalidate the pages in the file and then clear NFS_INO_INVALID_DATA. The problem is that it's possible for a stale page to creep into the mapping after the page was invalidated (i.e., via readahead). If another writer comes along and sets the flag after that happens but before invalidate_inode_pages2 returns then we could clear the flag without the cache having been properly invalidated. So, we must clear the flag first and then invalidate the pages. Doing this however, opens another race: It's possible to have two concurrent read() calls that end up in nfs_revalidate_mapping at the same time. The first one clears the NFS_INO_INVALID_DATA flag and then goes to call nfs_invalidate_mapping. Just before calling that though, the other task races in, checks the flag and finds it cleared. At that point, it trusts that the mapping is good and gets the lock on the page, allowing the read() to be satisfied from the cache even though the data is no longer valid. These effects are easily manifested by running diotest3 from the LTP test suite on NFS. That program does a series of DIO writes and buffered reads. The operations are serialized and page-aligned but the existing code fails the test since it occasionally allows a read to come out of the cache incorrectly. While mixing direct and buffered I/O isn't recommended, I believe it's possible to hit this in other ways that just use buffered I/O, though that situation is much harder to reproduce. The problem is that the checking/clearing of that flag and the invalidation of the mapping really need to be atomic. Fix this by serializing concurrent invalidations with a bitlock. At the same time, we also need to allow other places that check NFS_INO_INVALID_DATA to check whether we might be in the middle of invalidating the file, so fix up a couple of places that do that to look for the new NFS_INO_INVALIDATING flag. Doing this requires us to be careful not to set the bitlock unnecessarily, so this code only does that if it believes it will be doing an invalidation. 2014-03-31libceph: block I/O when PAUSE or FULL osd map flags are setJosh Durgin
commit d29adb34a94715174c88ca93e8aba955850c9bde upstream. The PAUSEWR and PAUSERD flags are meant to stop the cluster from processing writes and reads, respectively. The FULL flag is set when the cluster determines that it is out of space, and will no longer process writes. PAUSEWR and PAUSERD are purely client-side settings already implemented in userspace clients. The osd does nothing special with these flags. When the FULL flag is set, however, the osd responds to all writes with -ENOSPC. For cephfs, this makes sense, but for rbd the block layer translates this into EIO. If a cluster goes from full to non-full quickly, a filesystem on top of rbd will not behave well, since some writes succeed while others get EIO. Fix this by blocking any writes when the FULL flag is set in the osd client. This is the same strategy used by userspace, so apply it by default. A follow-on patch makes this configurable. __map_request() is called to re-target osd requests in case the available osds changed. Add a paused field to a ceph_osd_request, and set it whenever an appropriate osd map flag is set. Avoid queueing paused requests in __map_request(), but force them to be resent if they become unpaused. Also subscribe to the next osd map from the monitor if any of these flags are set, so paused requests can be unblocked as soon as possible. They have few users and a nasty surprise in terms of reentrancy guarantee as workqueue considers work items to be different if they don't have the same work function. firewire core-device and sbp2 have been been multiplexing work items with multiple work functions. Introduce fw_device_workfn() and sbp2_lu_workfn() which invoke fw_device->workfn and sbp2_logical_unit->workfn respectively and always use the two functions as the work functions and update the users to set the ->workfn fields instead of overriding work functions using PREPARE_DELAYED_WORK(). This fixes a variety of possible regressions since a2c1c57be8d9 "workqueue: consider work function when searching for busy work items" due to which fw_workqueue lost its required non-reentrancy property. This can be reproduced with default config since 3.11 kernels. A reproducer can be found in the kernel's selftest directory for networking by running ./psock_tpacket. The problem is that an order=2 compound page (allocated by alloc_one_pg_vec_page() is part of the munlocked VM_MIXEDMAP vma (mapped by packet_mmap()) and mistaken for a THP page and assumed to be order=9. The checks for THP in munlock came with commit ff6a6da60b89 ("mm: accelerate munlock() treatment of THP pages"), i.e. since 3.9, but did not trigger a bug. It just makes munlock_vma_pages_range() skip such compound pages until the next 512-pages-aligned page, when it encounters a head page. This is however not a problem for vma's where mlocking has no effect anyway, but it can distort the accounting. Since commit 7225522bb429 ("mm: munlock: batch non-THP page isolation and munlock+putback using pagevec") this can trigger a VM_BUG_ON in PageTransHuge() check. This patch fixes the issue by adding VM_MIXEDMAP flag to VM_SPECIAL, a list of flags that make vma's non-mlockable and non-mergeable. The reasoning is that VM_MIXEDMAP vma's are similar to VM_PFNMAP, which is already on the VM_SPECIAL list, and both are intended for non-LRU pages where mlocking makes no sense anyway. When there are several traced devices and the task accesses more devices, this logic can result in BLK_TN_PROCESS being sent several times to some devices while it is never sent to other devices. Thus blkparse doesn't display command name when parsing some blktrace files. Fix the problem by sending BLK_TN_PROCESS event to all traced devices when a task interacts with any of them. Commit 93e6f119c0ce ("ipc/mqueue: cleanup definition names and locations") added global hardcoded limits to the amount of message queues that can be created. While these limits are per-namespace, reality is that it ends up breaking userspace applications. Historically users have, at least in theory, been able to create up to INT_MAX queues, and limiting it to just 1024 is way too low and dramatic for some workloads and use cases. For instance, Madars reports: "This update imposes bad limits on our multi-process application. As our app uses approaches that each process opens its own set of queues (usually something about 3-5 queues per process). In some scenarios we might run up to 3000 processes or more (which of-course for linux is not a problem). Thus we might need up to 9000 queues or more. All processes run under one user." 2014-02-26net: ip, ipv6: handle gso skbs in forwarding pathFlorian Westphal

Marcelo Ricardo Leitner reported problems when the forwarding link path has a lower mtu than the incoming one if the inbound interface supports GRO. Given: Host <mtu1500> R1 <mtu1200> R2 Host sends tcp stream which is routed via R1 and R2. R1 performs GRO. In this case, the kernel will fail to send ICMP fragmentation needed messages (or pkt too big for ipv6), as GSO packets currently bypass dstmtu checks in forward path. Instead, Linux tries to send out packets exceeding the mtu. When locking route MTU on Host (i.e., no ipv4 DF bit set), R1 does not fragment the packets when forwarding, and again tries to send out packets exceeding R1-R2 link mtu. This alters the forwarding dstmtu checks to take the individual gso segment lengths into account. For ipv6, we send out pkt too big error for gso if the individual segments are too big. For ipv4, we either send icmp fragmentation needed, or, if the DF bit is not set, perform software segmentation and let the output path create fragments when the packet is leaving the machine. It is not 100% correct as the error message will contain the headers of the GRO skb instead of the original/segmented one, but it seems to work fine in my (limited) tests. Eric Dumazet suggested to simply shrink mss via ->gso_size to avoid sofware segmentation. However it turns out that skb_segment() assumes skb nr_frags is related to mss size so we would BUG there. I don't want to mess with it considering Herbert and Eric disagree on what the correct behavior should be. Hannes Frederic Sowa notes that when we would shrink gso_size skb_segment would then also need to deal with the case where SKB_MAX_FRAGS would be exceeded. This uses sofware segmentation in the forward path when we hit ipv4 non-DF packets and the outgoing link mtu is too small. Its not perfect, but given the lack of bug reports wrt. GRO fwd being broken this is a rare case anyway. Also its not like this could not be improved later once the dust settles. This patch adds some helper functions to make sure that a destructor is properly defined when a sock reference is assigned to a CAN related skb. To create an unshared skb owned by the original sock a common helper function has been introduced to replace open coded functions to create CAN echo skbs. commit a9f180345f5378ac87d80ed0bea55ba421d83859 upstream. I started noticing problems with KVM guest destruction on Linux 3.12+, where guest memory wasn't being cleaned up. I bisected it down to the commit introducing the new 'asm goto'-based atomics, and found this quirk was later applied to those. Unfortunately, even with GCC 4.8.2 (which ostensibly fixed the known 'asm goto' bug) I am still getting some kind of miscompilation. If I enable the asm_volatile_goto quirk for my compiler, KVM guests are destroyed correctly and the memory is cleaned up. So make the quirk unconditional for now, until bug is found and fixed. It turned out that with commit 72ec35163f9f ("switch compat readv/writev variants to COMPAT_SYSCALL_DEFINE") we lost the zero extension of a couple of syscall parameters because the some parameter types haven't been converted from unsigned long to compat_ulong_t. Whether that is good or bad is a separate discussion, but as long as the VM won't swap to make room for dirty cache, we can not consider anonymous pages when calculating the amount of dirtyable memory, the baseline to which dirty_background_ratio and dirty_ratio are applied. A simple workload that occupies a significant size (40+%, depending on memory layout, storage speeds etc.) of memory with anon/tmpfs pages and uses the remainder for a streaming writer demonstrates this problem. In that case, the actual cache pages are a small fraction of what is considered dirtyable overall, which results in an relatively large portion of the cache pages to be dirtied. As kswapd starts rotating these, random tasks enter direct reclaim and stall on IO. Only consider free pages and file pages dirtyable. This will result in truncating the value returned by a system call and making a wrong audit record. I don't know why gcc compiler doesn't complain about this, but anyway it causes a problem at runtime on arm64 (and probably most 64-bit archs). 2014-02-06libata: disable LPM for some WD SATA-I devicesTejun Heo

For some reason, some early WD drives spin up and down drives erratically when the link is put into slumber mode which can reduce the life expectancy of the device significantly. Unfortunately, we don't have full list of devices and given the nature of the issue it'd be better to err on the side of false positives than the other way around. Let's disable LPM on all WD devices which match one of the known problematic model prefixes and are SATA-I. As horkage list doesn't support matching SATA capabilities, this is implemented as two horkages - WD_BROKEN_LPM and NOLPM. The former is set for the known prefixes and sets the latter if the matched device is SATA-I. Note that this isn't optimal as this disables all LPM operations and partial link power state reportedly works fine on these; however, the way LPM is implemented in libata makes it difficult to precisely map libata LPM setting to specific link power state. Well, these devices are already fairly outdated. Let's just disable whole LPM for now. Commit 7cb2ef56e6a8 ("mm: fix aio performance regression for database caused by THP") can cause dereference of a dangling pointer if split_huge_page runs during PageHuge() if there are updates to the tail_page->private field. Also it is repeating compound_head twice for hugetlbfs and it is running compound_head+compound_trans_head for THP when a single one is needed in both cases. The new code within the PageSlab() check doesn't need to verify that the THP page size is never bigger than the smallest hugetlbfs page size, to avoid memory corruption. A longstanding theoretical race condition was found while fixing the above (see the change right after the skip_unlock label, that is relevant for the compound_lock path too). 2014-01-25i2c: Re-instate body of i2c_parent_is_i2c_adapter()Stephen Warren
commit 2fac2b891f287691c27ee8d2eeecf39571b27fea upstream. The body of i2c_parent_is_i2c_adapter() is currently guarded by I2C_MUX. It should be CONFIG_I2C_MUX instead. Among potentially other problems, this resulted in i2c_lock_adapter() only locking I2C mux child adapters, and not the parent adapter. In turn, this could allow inter-mingling of mux child selection and I2C transactions, which could result in I2C transactions being directed to the wrong I2C bus, and possibly even switching between busses in the middle of a transaction. One concrete issue caused by this bug was corrupted HDMI EDID reads during boot on the NVIDIA Tegra Seaboard system, although this only became apparent in recent linux-next, when the boot timing was changed just enough to trigger the race condition. 2014-01-15ipv4: fix tunneled VM traffic over hw VXLAN/GRE GSO NICWei-Chun Chao
[ Upstream commit 7a7ffbabf99445704be01bff5d7e360da908cf8e ] VM to VM GSO traffic is broken if it goes through VXLAN or GRE tunnel and the physical NIC on the host supports hardware VXLAN/GRE GSO offload (e.g. bnx2x and next-gen mlx4). Two issues - (VXLAN) VM traffic has SKB_GSO_DODGY and SKB_GSO_UDP_TUNNEL with SKB_GSO_TCP/UDP set depending on the inner protocol. GSO header integrity check fails in udp4_ufo_fragment if inner protocol is TCP. Also gso_segs is calculated incorrectly using skb->len that includes tunnel header. Fix: robust check should only be applied to the inner packet. (VXLAN & GRE) Once GSO header integrity check passes, NULL segs is returned and the original skb is sent to hardware. However the tunnel header is already pulled. Fix: tunnel header needs to be restored so that hardware can perform GSO properly on the original packet. 2014-01-15vlan: Fix header ops passthru when doing TX VLAN offload.David S. Miller
[ Upstream commit 2205369a314e12fcec4781cc73ac9c08fc2b47de ] When the vlan code detects that the real device can do TX VLAN offloads in hardware, it tries to arrange for the real device's header_ops to be invoked directly. But it does so illegally, by simply hooking the real device's header_ops up to the VLAN device. This doesn't work because we will end up invoking a set of header_ops routines which expect a device type which matches the real device, but will see a VLAN device instead. Fix this by providing a pass-thru set of header_ops which will arrange to pass the proper real device instead. To facilitate this add a dev_rebuild_header(). There are implementations which provide a ->cache and ->create but not a ->rebuild (f.e. PLIP). So we need a helper function just like dev_hard_header() to avoid crashes.
