2026-04-22smb: client: Remove obsolete cmac(aes) allocationEric Biggers
Since the crypto library API is now being used instead of crypto_shash, the "cmac(aes)" crypto_shash that is being allocated and stored in 'struct cifs_secmech' is no longer used. Remove it. That makes the kconfig selection of CRYPTO_CMAC and the module softdep on "cmac" unnecessary. So remove those too. Finally, since this removes the last use of crypto_shash from the smb client, also remove the remaining crypto_shash-related helper functions. Note: cifs_unicode.c was relying on <linux/unaligned.h> being included transitively via <crypto/internal/hash.h>. Since the latter include is removed, make cifs_unicode.c include <linux/unaligned.h> explicitly. 2026-03-04cifs: open files should not hold ref on superblockShyam Prasad N
Today whenever we deal with a file, in addition to holding a reference on the dentry, we also get a reference on the superblock. This happens in two cases: 1. when a new cinode is allocated 2. when an oplock break is being processed The reasoning for holding the superblock ref was to make sure that when umount happens, if there are users of inodes and dentries, it does not try to clean them up and wait for the last ref to superblock to be dropped by last of such users. But the side effect of doing that is that umount silently drops a ref on the superblock and we could have deferred closes and lease breaks still holding these refs. Ideally, we should ensure that all of these users of inodes and dentries are cleaned up at the time of umount, which is what this code is doing. This code change allows these code paths to use a ref on the dentry (and hence the inode). That way, umount is ensured to clean up SMB client resources when it's the last ref on the superblock (For ex: when same objects are shared). The code change also moves the call to close all the files in deferred close list to the umount code path. It also waits for oplock_break workers to be flushed before calling kill_anon_super (which eventually frees up those objects). 2026-02-21Convert more 'alloc_obj' cases to default GFP_KERNEL argumentsLinus Torvalds
This converts some of the visually simpler cases that have been split over multiple lines. I only did the ones that are easy to verify the resulting diff by having just that final GFP_KERNEL argument on the next line. Somebody should probably do a proper coccinelle script for this, but for me the trivial script actually resulted in an assertion failure in the middle of the script. I probably had made it a bit _too_ trivial. So after fighting that far a while I decided to just do some of the syntactically simpler cases with variations of the previous 'sed' scripts. The more syntactically complex multi-line cases would mostly really want whitespace cleanup anyway. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21Convert 'alloc_obj' family to use the new default GFP_KERNEL argumentLinus Torvalds
This was done entirely with mindless brute force, using git grep -l '\<k[vmz]*alloc_objs*(.*, GFP_KERNEL)' | xargs sed -i 's/\(alloc_objs*(.*\), GFP_KERNEL)/\1)/' to convert the new alloc_obj() users that had a simple GFP_KERNEL argument to just drop that argument. Note that due to the extreme simplicity of the scripting, any slightly more complex cases spread over multiple lines would not be triggered: they definitely exist, but this covers the vast bulk of the cases, and the resulting diff is also then easier to check automatically. For the same reason the 'flex' versions will be done as a separate conversion. Signed-off-by: Linus Torvalds <torvalds@linux-foundation.org>
2026-02-21treewide: Replace kmalloc with kmalloc_obj for non-scalar typesKees Cook
This is the result of running the Coccinelle script from scripts/coccinelle/api/kmalloc_objs.cocci. The script is designed to avoid scalar types (which need careful case-by-case checking), and instead replace kmalloc-family calls that allocate struct or union object instances: Single allocations: kmalloc(sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_obj(TYPE, ...) Array allocations: kmalloc_array(COUNT, sizeof(TYPE), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_objs(TYPE, COUNT, ...) Flex array allocations: kmalloc(struct_size(PTR, FAM, COUNT), ...) are replaced with: kmalloc_flex(*PTR, FAM, COUNT, ...) (where TYPE may also be *VAR) The resulting allocations no longer return "void *", instead returning "TYPE *". Signed-off-by: Kees Cook <kees@kernel.org>

2025-12-05cifs: Do some preparation prior to organising the function declarationsDavid Howells
Make some preparatory cleanups prior to running a script to organise the function declarations within the fs/smb/client/ headers. These include: (1) Remove "inline" from the dummy cifs_proc_init/clean() functions as they are in a .c file. (2) Move should_compress()'s kdoc comment to the .c file and remove kdoc markers from the comments. (3) Rename CIFS_ALLOW_INSECURE_LEGACY in #endif comments to have CONFIG_ on the front to allow the script to recognise it. (4) Don't let comments have bare words at the left margin as that confused the simplistic function detection code in the script. (5) Adjust some argument lists so that when and if the cleanup script is run they don't end up over 100 chars. (6) Fix a few comments to have missing '*' added or the "*/" moved to their own lines so that checkpatch doesn't moan over the cleanup script patch. (7) Move struct cifs_calc_sig_ctx to cifsglob.h. 2025-12-05cifs: Add a tracepoint to log EIO errorsDavid Howells
Add a tracepoint to log EIO errors and give it the capacity to convey up to two integers of information. This is then wrapped with three functions: int smb_EIO(enum smb_eio_trace trace) int smb_EIO1(enum smb_eio_trace trace, unsigned long info) int smb_EIO2(enum smb_eio_trace trace, unsigned long info, unsigned long info2) depending on how many bits of info are desired to be logged with any particular trace. The functions all return -EIO and can be used in place of -EIO. The trace argument is an enum value that gets translated to a string when the trace is printed. This makes is easier to log EIO instances when the client is under high load than turning on a printk wrapper such as cifs_dbg(). Granted, EIO could have its own separate EIO printing since EIO shouldn't happen. 2025-12-05cifs: Remove the RFC1002 header from smb_hdrDavid Howells
Remove the RFC1002 header from struct smb_hdr as used for SMB-1.0. This simplifies the SMB-1.0 code by simplifying a lot of places that have to add or subtract 4 to work around the fact that the RFC1002 header isn't really part of the message and the base for various offsets within the message is from the base of the smb_hdr, not the RFC1002 header. Further, clean up a bunch of places that require an extra kvec struct specifically pointing to the RFC1002 header, such that kvec[0].iov_base must be exactly 4 bytes before kvec[1].iov_base. This allows the header preamble size stuff to be removed too. The size of the request and response message are then handed around either directly or by summing the size of all the iov_len members in the kvec array for which we have a count. Also, this simplifies and cleans up the common transmission and receive paths for SMB1 and SMB2/3 as there no longer needs to be special handling casing for SMB1 messages as the RFC1002 header is now generated on the fly for SMB1 as it is for SMB2/3. 2025-03-31smb:client: smb: client: Add reverse mapping from tcon to superblocksWang Zhaolong
Currently, when a SMB connection is reset and renegotiated with the server, there's no way to update all related mount points with new negotiated sizes. This is because while superblocks (cifs_sb_info) maintain references to tree connections (tcon) through tcon_link structures, there is no reverse mapping from a tcon back to all the superblocks using it. This patch adds a bidirectional relationship between tcon and cifs_sb_info structures by: 1. Adding a cifs_sb_list to tcon structure with appropriate locking 2. Adding tcon_sb_link to cifs_sb_info to join the list 3. Managing the list entries during mount and umount operations The bidirectional relationship enables future functionality to locate and update all superblocks connected to a specific tree connection, such as: - Updating negotiated parameters after reconnection - Efficiently notifying all affected mounts of capability changes This is the first part of a series to improve connection resilience by keeping all mount parameters in sync with server capabilities after reconnection. 2024-04-19cifs: Fix reacquisition of volume cookie on still-live connectionDavid Howells
During mount, cifs_mount_get_tcon() gets a tcon resource connection record and then attaches an fscache volume cookie to it. However, it does this irrespective of whether or not the tcon returned from cifs_get_tcon() is a new record or one that's already in use. This leads to a warning about a volume cookie collision and a leaked volume cookie because tcon->fscache gets reset. Fix this be adding a mutex and a "we've already tried this" flag and only doing it once for the lifetime of the tcon. [!] Note: Looking at cifs_mount_get_tcon(), a more general solution may actually be required. Reacquiring the volume cookie isn't the only thing that function does: it also partially reinitialises the tcon record without any locking - which may cause live filesystem ops already using the tcon through a previous mount to malfunction. This can be reproduced simply by something like: mount //example.com/test /xfstest.test -o user=shares, pass=xxx, fsc mount //example.com/test /mnt -o user=shares, pass=xxx, fsc Fixes: 70431bfd825d ("cifs: Support fscache indexing rewrite") Signed-off-by: David Howells <dhowells@redhat.com> Acked-by: Paulo Alcantara (Red Hat) <pc@manguebit.com> cc: Shyam Prasad N <sprasad@microsoft.com> cc: linux-cifs@vger.kernel.org cc: linux-fsdevel@vger.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Steve French <stfrench@microsoft.com>
2024-04-11smb3: fix broken reconnect when password changing on the server by allowing ↵Steve French
password rotation There are various use cases that are becoming more common in which password changes are scheduled on a server(s) periodically but the clients connected to this server need to stay connected (even in the face of brief network reconnects) due to mounts which can not be easily unmounted and mounted at will, and servers that do password rotation do not always have the ability to tell the clients exactly when to the new password will be effective, so add support for an alt password ("password2=") on mount (and also remount) so that we can anticipate the upcoming change to the server without risking breaking existing mounts. 2024-03-10smb: client: do not defer close open handles to deleted filesMeetakshi Setiya
When a file/dentry has been deleted before closing all its open handles, currently, closing them can add them to the deferred close list. This can lead to problems in creating file with the same name when the file is re-created before the deferred close completes. This issue was seen while reusing a client's already existing lease on a file for compound operations and xfstest 591 failed because of the deferred close handle that remained valid even after the file was deleted and was being reused to create a file with the same name. The server in this case returns an error on open with STATUS_DELETE_PENDING. Recreating the file would fail till the deferred handles are closed (duration specified in closetimeo). This patch fixes the issue by flagging all open handles for the deleted file (file path to be precise) by setting status_file_deleted to true in the cifsFileInfo structure. As per the information classes specified in MS-FSCC, SMB2 query info response from the server has a DeletePending field, set to true to indicate that deletion has been requested on that file. If this is the case, flag the open handles for this file too. When doing close in cifs_close for each of these handles, check the value of this boolean field and do not defer close these handles if the corresponding filepath has been deleted. 2024-01-18smb3: show beginning time for per share statsSteve French
In analyzing problems, one missing piece of debug data is when the mount occurred. A related problem is when collecting stats we don't know the period of time the stats covered, ie when this set of stats for the tcon started to be collected. To make debugging easier track the stats begin time. Set it when the mount occurred at mount time, and reset it to current time whenever stats are reset. For example, ... 1) \\localhost\test SMBs: 14 since 2024-01-17 22:17:30 UTC Bytes read: 0 Bytes written: 0 Open files: 0 total (local), 0 open on server TreeConnects: 1 total 0 failed TreeDisconnects: 0 total 0 failed ... 2) \\localhost\scratch SMBs: 24 since 2024-01-17 22:16:04 UTC Bytes read: 0 Bytes written: 0 Open files: 0 total (local), 0 open on server TreeConnects: 1 total 0 failed TreeDisconnects: 0 total 0 failed ... Note the time "since ... UTC" is now displayed in /proc/fs/cifs/Stats for each share that is mounted. 2023-06-28smb: client: fix shared DFS root mounts with different prefixesPaulo Alcantara
When having two DFS root mounts that are connected to same namespace, same mount options but different prefix paths, we can't really use the shared @server->origin_fullpath when chasing DFS links in them. Move the origin_fullpath field to cifs_tcon structure so when having shared DFS root mounts with different prefix paths, and we need to chase any DFS links, dfs_get_automount_devname() will pick up the correct full path out of the @tcon that will be used for the new mount. Handle trailing and leading separators when parsing UNC and prefix paths in smb3_parse_devname(). Then, store the sanitised paths in smb3_fs_context::source. This fixes the following cases $ mount //srv/share// /mnt/1 -o ... $ cat /mnt/1/d0/f0 cat: /mnt/1/d0/f0: Invalid argument The -EINVAL was returned because the client sent SMB2_CREATE "\\d0\f0" rather than SMB2_CREATE "\d0\f0". $ mount //srv//share /mnt/1 -o ... mount: Invalid argument The -EINVAL was returned correctly although the client only realised it after sending a couple of bad requests rather than bailing out earlier when parsing mount options.
