Some modems, such as the Telit UE910, are using an Infineon Flash Loader
utility. It has two interfaces, 2/2/0 (Abstract Modem) and 10/0/0 (CDC
Data). The latter can be used as a serial interface to upgrade the
firmware of the modem. However, that isn't possible when the cdc-acm
driver takes control of the device.
The following is an explanation of the behaviour by Daniele Palmas during
discussion on linux-usb.

This is the flashing device that is caught by the cdc-acm driver. Once
the ttyACM appears, the application starts sending a magic string
(simple write on the file descriptor) to keep the device in flashing
mode. If this magic string is not properly received in a certain time
interval, the modem goes on in normal operative mode:

Using the cdc-acm driver, the string, though being sent in the same way
than using the usb-serial-simple driver (I can confirm that the data is
passing properly since I used an hw usb sniffer), does not make the
device to stay in flashing mode."

In order to support an older USB cradle by Denso, I added its vendor- and product-ID to the array of usb_device_id acm_ids. In this way cdc-acm feels responsible for this cradle. The related /dev/ttyACM node is being created properly, and the data transfer works.
However, later cradle models by Denso do have proper descriptors, so the patch is not required for these. At the same time both the older and the later model have the same vendor- and product-ID, but they both work with the patched driver.
Declaration of the Denso cradles I tested:
- both models have the same IDs: vendorID 0x076d, productID 0x0006
- older model: Denso CU-321 (descriptors not properly set)
- later model: Denso CU-821 (with proper descriptors)

Also allow set_termios to be called from open with a termios_old of
NULL. Note that DTR will not be raised prematurely in this case.

We should stop I/O unconditionally at suspend rather than rely on the
tty-port initialised flag (which is set prior to stopping I/O during
shutdown) in order to prevent suspend returning with URBs still active.

The current ACM runtime-suspend implementation is broken in several
ways:
Firstly, it buffers only the first write request being made while
suspended -- any further writes are silently dropped.
Secondly, writes being dropped also leak write urbs, which are never
reclaimed (until the device is unbound).
Thirdly, even the single buffered write is not cleared at shutdown
(which may happen before the device is resumed), something which can
lead to another urb leak as well as a PM usage-counter leak.
Fix this by implementing a delayed-write queue using urb anchors and
making sure to discard the queue properly at shutdown.

Fix race between write() and resume() due to improper locking that could
lead to writes being reordered.
Resume must be done atomically and susp_count be protected by the
write_lock in order to prevent racing with write(). This could otherwise
lead to writes being reordered if write() grabs the write_lock after
susp_count is decremented, but before the delayed urb is submitted.

Fix race between write() and suspend() which could lead to writes being
dropped (or I/O while suspended) if the device is runtime suspended
while a write request is being processed.
Specifically, suspend() releases the write_lock after determining the
device is idle but before incrementing the susp_count, thus leaving a
window where a concurrent write() can submit an urb.

By specifying NO_UNION_NORMAL the ACM driver does only use the first two
USB interfaces (modem data & control). The AT Port, Diagnostic and NMEA
interfaces are left to the USB serial driver.

When writing data we were:
lock
do some work
unlock
call function
lock
do some work
unlock
return
return
It turns out, that "function" was only ever called in the one place, so
instead of locking/unlocking for no good reason, just inline the
function and only grab the lock once.
This has sped up the pathological case of sending 1 byte packets to a
loop-back cdc-acm device from 49600 bytes per second to 50100 bytes a
second on my workstation. A tiny increase yes, but noticable, and now
the spinlock isn't the hottest thing on the perf graph anymore. Yes, we
are still waiting for the hardware for the most part, but getting rid of
a spinlock_irq_save() call for every packet is still a good thing.
And we end up deleting lines of code, always a win overall.
This was found by using a Teensy 3.0 device and the test program and
firmware located at:

Unregister tty device in disconnect as is required by the USB stack.
By deferring unregistration to when the last tty reference is dropped,
the parent interface device can get unregistered before the child
resulting in broken hotplug events being generated when the tty is
finally closed:

acm_probe() ignores errors in tty_port_register_device()
and leaves intfdata pointing to freed memory on alloc_fail7
error path. The patch fixes the both issues.

It allows for cleaning up on a considerable amount of places. They did
port_get, hangup, kref_put. Now the only thing needed is to call
tty_port_tty_hangup which does exactly that. And they can also decide
whether to consider CLOCAL or completely ignore that.

It allows for cleaning up on a considerable amount of places. They did
port_get, wakeup, kref_put. Now the only thing needed is to call
tty_port_tty_wakeup which does exactly that.
One exception is ifx6x60 where tty_wakeup was open-coded. We now call
tty_wakeup properly there.

The IMS PCU (Passenger Control Unit) device used custom protocol over serial
line, so it is presenting itself as CDC ACM device.
Now that we have proper in-kernel driver for it we need to black-list the
device in cdc-acm driver.

Now, we start converting tty buffer functions to actually use
tty_port. This will allow us to get rid of the need of tty in many
call sites. Only tty_port will needed and hence no more
tty_port_tty_get in those paths.
Now, the one where most of tty_port_tty_get gets removed:
tty_flip_buffer_push.
IOW we also closed all the races in drivers not using tty_port_tty_get
at all yet.
Also we move tty_flip_buffer_push declaration from include/linux/tty.h
to include/linux/tty_flip.h to all others while we are changing it
anyway.

Some devices (ex Nokia C7) simply don't respond at all when data is sent
to some of their USB interfaces. The data gets stuck in the TTYs queue
and sits there until close(2), which them blocks because closing_wait
defaults to 30 seconds (even though the fd is O_NONBLOCK). This is
rarely desired. Implement the standard mechanism to adjust closing_wait
and let applications handle it how they want to.

Pull USB changes from Greg Kroah-Hartman:

There are lots of gadget driver changes (including copying a bunch of
files into the drivers/staging/ccg/ directory so that the other gadget
drivers can be fixed up properly without breaking that driver), and we
remove the old obsolete ub.c driver from the tree.
There are also the usual XHCI set of updates, and other various driver
changes and updates. We also are trying hard to remove the old dbg()
macro, but the final bits of that removal will be coming in through
the networking tree before we can delete it for good.
All of these patches have been in the linux-next tree.

If a device specifies zero endpoints in its interface descriptor,
the kernel oopses in acm_probe(). Even though that's clearly an
invalid descriptor, we should test wether we have all endpoints.
This is especially bad as this oops can be triggered by just
plugging a USB device in.

Currently we have no way to assign tty->port while performing tty
installation. There are two ways to provide the link tty_struct =>
tty_port. Either by calling tty_port_install from tty->ops->install or
tty_port_register_device called instead of tty_register_device when
the device is being set up after connected.
In this patch we modify most of the drivers to do the latter. When the
drivers use tty_register_device and we have tty_port already, we
switch to tty_port_register_device. So we have the tty_struct =>
tty_port link for free for those.

This will let us sort out a whole pile of tty related races. The
alternative would be to keep points and refcount the termios objects.
However
1. They are tiny anyway
2. Many devices don't use the stored copies
3. We can remove a pty special case

Currently CDC-ACM devices stay throttled when their TTY is closed while
throttled, stalling further communication attempts after the next open.
Unthrottling during open/activate got lost starting with kernel
3.0.0 and this patch reintroduces it.

Hub-initiated LPM is not good for USB communications devices. Comms
devices should be able to tell when their link can go into a lower power
state, because they know when an incoming transmission is finished.
Ideally, these devices would slam their links into a lower power state,
using the device-initiated LPM, after finishing the last packet of their
data transfer.
If we enable the idle timeouts for the parent hubs to enable
hub-initiated LPM, we will get a lot of useless LPM packets on the bus
as the devices reject LPM transitions when they're in the middle of
receiving data. Worse, some devices might blindly accept the
hub-initiated LPM and power down their radios while they're in the
middle of receiving a transmission.
The Intel Windows folks are disabling hub-initiated LPM for all USB
communications devices under a xHCI USB 3.0 host. In order to keep
the Linux behavior as close as possible to Windows, we need to do the
same in Linux.
Set the disable_hub_initiated_lpm flag for for all USB communications
drivers. I know there aren't currently any USB 3.0 devices that
implement these class specifications, but we should be ready if they do.

All num, magic and owner are set by alloc_tty_driver. No need to
re-set them on each allocation site.
pti driver sets something different to what it passes to
alloc_tty_driver. It is not a bug, since we don't use the lines
parameter in any way. Anyway this is fixed, and now we do the right
thing.
