2020-09-28Input: i8042 - add nopnp quirk for Acer Aspire 5 A515Jiri Kosina
Touchpad on this laptop is not detected properly during boot, as PNP enumerates (wrongly) AUX port as disabled on this machine. Fix that by adding this board (with admittedly quite funny DMI identifiers) to nopnp quirk list. On the Lenovo ThinkPad Twist S230u (3347-4HU) with BIOS version "GDETC1WW (1.81 ) 06/27/2019", the keyboard, Synaptics TouchPad, and TrackPoint either do not function or stop functioning a few minutes after boot. This problem has been noted before, perhaps only occurring with BIOS 1.57 and later.[1][2][3][4][5] Odds of a BIOS fix appear to be low: 1.57 was released over 6 years ago and although the [BIOS changelog] notes "Fixed an issue of UEFI touchpad/trackpoint/keyboard/touchscreen" in 1.58, it appears to be insufficient. Setting i8042.reset=1 or adding 33474HU to the reset list avoids the issue on my system from either warm or cold boot. 2020-04-27Revert "Input: i8042 - add ThinkPad S230u to i8042 nomux list"Dmitry Torokhov
This reverts commit 18931506465a762ffd3f4803d36a18d336a67da9. From Kevin Locke: "... nomux only appeared to fix the issue because the controller continued working after warm reboots. After more thorough testing from both warm and cold start, I now believe the entry should be added to i8042_dmi_reset_table rather than i8042_dmi_nomux_table as i8042.reset=1 alone is sufficient to avoid the issue from both states while i8042.nomux is not."

2020-04-01Input: i8042 - add Acer Aspire 5738z to nomux listHans de Goede
The Acer Aspire 5738z has a button to disable (and re-enable) the touchpad next to the touchpad. When this button is pressed a LED underneath indicates that the touchpad is disabled (and an event is send to userspace and GNOME shows its touchpad enabled / disable OSD thingie). So far so good, but after re-enabling the touchpad it no longer works. The laptop does not have an external ps2 port, so mux mode is not needed and disabling mux mode fixes the touchpad no longer working after toggling it off and back on again, so lets add this laptop model to the nomux list. 2018-04-04Input: i8042 - enable MUX on Sony VAIO VGN-CS series to fix touchpadOndrej Zary
The touch sensor buttons on Sony VAIO VGN-CS series laptops (e.g. VGN-CS31S) are a separate PS/2 device. As the MUX is disabled for all VAIO machines by the nomux blacklist, the data from touch sensor buttons and touchpad are combined. The protocol used by the buttons is probably similar to the touchpad protocol (both are Synaptics) so both devices get enabled. The controller combines the data, creating a mess which results in random button clicks, touchpad stopping working and lost sync error messages: psmouse serio1: TouchPad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 4 psmouse serio1: TouchPad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 1 psmouse serio1: TouchPad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 1 psmouse serio1: TouchPad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 1 psmouse serio1: TouchPad at isa0060/serio1/input0 lost sync at byte 1 psmouse serio1: issuing reconnect request Add a new i8042_dmi_forcemux_table whitelist with VGN-CS. 2016-12-19Input: i8042 - Trust firmware a bit more when probing on X86Dmitry Torokhov
The error message "Can't read CTR while initializing i8042" appears on Cherry Trail-based devices at each boot time: i8042: PNP: No PS/2 controller found. Probing ports directly. i8042: Can't read CTR while initializing i8042 i8042: probe of i8042 failed with error -5 This happens because we historically do not trust firmware on X86 and, while noting that PNP does not show keyboard or mouse devices, we still charge ahead and try to probe the controller. Let's relax this a bit and if results of PNP probe agree with the results of platform initialization/quirks conclude that there is, in fact, no i8042. While at it, let's avoid using x86_platform.i8042_detect() and instead abort execution early if platform indicates that it can not possibly have i8042 (x86_platform.legacy.i8042 equals X86_LEGACY_I8042_PLATFORM_ABSENT). 2016-12-18Input: i8042 - force synchronous probing of PNP driversDmitry Torokhov
We rely on the result of scanning PNP bus for keyboard and mouse devices to decide whether we should continue initialization of i8042 driver or not, so the probes can not be asynchronous. Also, it is not a good idea to unbind either of the PNP devices while i8042 is running, so let's disable bind/unbind for the PNP drivers through sysfs and rely on i8042 cleaning after itself properly. User can still unbind and rebind entire i8042 and that will take care of PNP drivers as well. Reviewed-by: Luis R. The Schenker XMG C504 is a rebranded Gigabyte P35 v2 laptop. Therefore it also needs a keyboard reset to detect the Elantech touchpad. Otherwise the touchpad appears to be dead. 2016-10-11Input: i8042 - skip selftest on ASUS laptopsMarcos Paulo de Souza
On suspend/resume cycle, selftest is executed to reset i8042 controller. But when this is done in Asus devices, subsequent calls to detect/init functions to elantech driver fails. Skipping selftest fixes this problem. An easier step to reproduce this problem is adding i8042.reset=1 as a kernel parameter. On Asus laptops, it'll make the system to start with the touchpad already stuck, since psmouse_probe forcibly calls the selftest function. This patch was inspired by John Hiesey's change[1], but, since this problem affects a lot of models of Asus, let's avoid running selftests on them. 2014-10-11Input: i8042 - disable active multiplexing by defaultDmitry Torokhov
Active multiplexing is a nice feature as it allows several pointing devices (such as touchpad and external mouse) use their native protocols at the same time. Unfortunately many manufacturers do not implement the feature properly even though they advertise it. The problematic implementations are never fixed, since Windows by default does not use this mode, and move from one BIOS/model of laptop to another. When active multiplexing is broken turning it on usually results in touchpad, keyboard, or both unresponsive. With PS/2 usage on decline (most of PS/2 devices in use nowadays are internal laptop touchpads), I expect number of users who have laptops with working MUX implementation, docking stations with external PS/2 ports, and who are still using external PS/2 mice, to be rather small. Let's flip the default to be OFF and allow activating it through i8042.nomux=0 kernel option. We'll also keep DMI table where we can record known good models. We need to add this module to the nomux table to be able to detect the touchpad. Cc: stablevger.kernel.org Signed-off-by: Marcos Paulo de Souza <marcos.souza.org@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Dmitry Torokhov <dmitry.torokhov@gmail.com>
2014-09-11Input: i8042 - add nomux quirk for Avatar AVIU-145A6Hans de Goede
The sys_vendor / product_name are somewhat generic unfortunately, so this may lead to some false positives. But nomux usually does no harm, where as not having it clearly is causing problems on the Avatar AVIU-145A6. https://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=77391 Cc: stable@vger.kernel.org Reported-by: Hugo P <saurosii@gmail.com> Signed-off-by: Hans de Goede <hdegoede@redhat.com> Signed-off-by: Dmitry Torokhov <dmitry.torokhov@gmail.com>

This allows the module to be autoloaded in the common case. In order to work on non-PnP systems the module should be compiled in or loaded unconditionally at boot (c.f. modules-load.d(5)), as before. 2012-12-11x86, 8042: Enable A20 using KBC to fix S3 resume on some MSI laptopsOndrej Zary
Some MSI laptop BIOSes are broken - INT 15h code uses port 92h to enable A20 line but resume code assumes that KBC was used. The laptop will not resume from S3 otherwise but powers off after a while and then powers on again stuck with a blank screen. Fix it by enabling A20 using KBC in i8042_platform_init for x86.
