Running igt, I was encountering the invalid TLB bug on my 845g, despite
that it was using the CS workaround. Examining the w/a buffer in the
error state, showed that the copy from the user batch into the
workaround itself was suffering from the invalid TLB bug (the first
cacheline was broken with the first two words reversed). Time to try a
fresh approach. This extends the workaround to write into each page of
our scratch buffer in order to overflow the TLB and evict the invalid
entries. This could be refined to only do so after we update the GTT,
but for simplicity, we do it before each batch.
I suspect this supersedes our current workaround, but for safety keep
doing both.
V2: The magic number shall be 2.
This doesn't conclusively prove that it is the mythical TLB bug we've
been trying to workaround for so long, that it requires touching a number
of pages to prevent the corruption indicates to me that it is TLB
related, but the corruption (the reversed cacheline) is more subtle than
a TLB bug, where we would expect it to read the wrong page entirely.
Oh well, it prevents a reliable hang for me and so probably for others
as well.

Should probably just init this in the GMbus code all the time, based on
the cdclk and HPLL like we do on newer platforms. Ville has code for
that in a rework branch, but until then we can fix this bug fairly
easily.

Passive DP->DVI/HDMI dongles on DP++ ports show up to the system as HDMI
devices, as they do not have a sink device in them to respond to any AUX
traffic. When probing these dongles over the DDC, sometimes they will
NAK the first attempt even though the transaction is valid and they
support the DDC protocol. The retry loop inside of
drm_do_probe_ddc_edid() would normally catch this case and try the
transaction again, resulting in success.
That, however, was thwarted by the fix for [1]:

drm: give up on edid retries when i2c bus is not responding
This added code to exit immediately if the return code from the
i2c_transfer function was -ENXIO in order to reduce the amount of time
spent in waiting for unresponsive or disconnected devices. That was
possible because the underlying i2c bit banging algorithm had retries of
its own (which, of course, were part of the reason for the bug the
commit fixes).

drm/i915: use GMBUS to manage i2c links
we've been flipping back and forth enabling the GMBUS transfers, but
we've settled since then. The GMBUS implementation does not do any
retries, however, bailing out of the drm_do_probe_ddc_edid() retry loop
on first encounter of -ENXIO. This, combined with Eugeni's commit, broke
the retry on -ENXIO.
Retry GMBUS once on -ENXIO on first message to mitigate the issues with
passive adapters.

According to the HSW b-spec we need to try clock divisors of 63
and 72, each 3 or more times, when attempting DP AUX channel
communication on a server chipset. This actually wasn't happening
due to a short-circuit that only checked the DP_AUX_CH_CTL_DONE bit
in status rather than checking that the operation was done and
that DP_AUX_CH_CTL_TIME_OUT_ERROR was not set.

Single channel LVDS maxes out at 112 MHz. The 15" pre-retina models
shipped with 1440x900 (106 MHz) by default or 1680x1050 (119 MHz)
as a BTO option, both versions used dual channel LVDS even though
the smaller one would have fit into a single channel.

Bug report showing that the MacBookPro8,2 with 1440x900 uses dual
channel LVDS (this lead to it being hardcoded in intel_lvds.c by

If i915.lvds_channel_mode=2 is missing even though the machine needs
it, every other vertical line is white and consequently, only the left
half of the screen is visible (verified by myself on a MacBookPro9,1).
Forum posting concerning a MacBookPro6,2 with 1440x900, author is
using i915.lvds_channel_mode=2 on the kernel command line, proving
that the machine uses dual channels:

Chi Mei N154C6-L04 with 1440x900 is a replacement panel for all
MacBook Pro "A1286" models, and that model number encompasses the

Possible motivation to use dual channel LVDS even on the 1440x900
models: Reduce the number of different parts, i.e. use identical logic
boards and display cabling on both versions and the only differing
component is the panel.

The hardware, according to the specs, is limited to 256 byte transfers,
and current driver has no protections in case users attempt to do larger
transfers. The code will just stomp over status register and mayhem
ensues.
Let's split larger transfers into digestable chunks. Doing this allows
Atmel MXT driver on Pixel 1 function properly (it hasn't since commit
9d8dc3e529a19e427fd379118acd132520935c5d "Input: atmel_mxt_ts -
implement T44 message handling" which tries to consume multiple
touchscreen/touchpad reports in a single transaction).

When creating a fence for a tiled object, only fence the area that
makes up the actual tiles. The object may be larger than the tiled
area and if we allow those extra addresses to be fenced, they'll
get converted to addresses beyond where the object is mapped. This
opens up the possiblity of writes beyond the end of object.
To prevent this, we adjust the size of the fence to only encompass
the area that makes up the actual tiles. The extra space is considered
un-tiled and now behaves as if it was a linear object.

If CONFIG_DEBUG_MUTEXES is set, the mutex->owner field is only cleared
if the mutex debugging is enabled which introduces a race in our
mutex_is_locked_by() - i.e. we may inspect the old owner value before it
is acquired by the new task.
This is the root cause of this error:

In order to act as a full command barrier by itself, we need to tell the
pipecontrol to actually stall the command streamer while the flush runs.
We require the full command barrier before operations like
MI_SET_CONTEXT, which currently rely on a prior invalidate flush.

Apparently stuff works that way on those machines.
I agree with Chris' concern that this is a bit risky but imo worth a
shot in -next just for fun. Afaics all these machines have the pci
resources allocated like that by the BIOS, so I suspect that it's all
ok.

There is a conflict seen when requesting the kernel to reserve
the physical space used for the stolen area. This is because
some BIOS are wrapping the stolen area in the root PCI bus, but have
an off-by-one error. As a workaround we retry the reservation with an
offset of 1 instead of 0.

Apparently PCH fifo underruns are tricky, we have plenty reports that
we see the occasional underrun (especially at boot-up).
So for a change let's see what happens when we don't re-enable pch
fifo underrun reporting when the pipe is disabled. This means that the
kernel can't catch pch fifo underruns when they happen (except when
all pipes are on on the pch). But we'll still catch underruns when
disabling the pipe again. So not a terrible reduction in test
coverage.
Since the DRM_ERROR is new and hence a regression plan B would be to
revert it back to a debug output. Which would be a lot worse than this
hack for underrun test coverage in the wild. See the referenced

For Haswell and Broadwell, if the display power well has been disabled,
the display audio controller divider values EM4 M VALUE and EM5 N VALUE
will have been lost. The CDCLK frequency is required for reprogramming them
to generate 24MHz HD-A link BCLK. So provide a private interface for the
audio driver to query CDCLK.
This is a stopgap solution until a more generic interface between audio
and display drivers has been implemented.

When a machine is booted with nomodeset option, i915 driver skips the
whole initialization. Meanwhile, HD-audio tries to bind wth i915 just
by request_symbol() without knowing that the initialization was
skipped, and eventually it hits WARN_ON() in i915_request_power_well()
and i915_release_power_well() wrongly but still continues probing,
even though it doesn't work at all.
In this patch, both functions are changed to return an error in case
of uninitialized state instead of WARN_ON(), so that HD-audio driver
can give up HDMI controller initialization at the right time.

As we use WC updates of the PTE, we are responsible for notifying the
hardware when to flush its TLBs. Do so after we zap all the PTEs before
suspend (and the BIOS tries to read our GTT).

drm/i915: Kill vblank waits after pipe enable on gmch platforms
So it turns out they weren't all entirely useless. Apparently the pipe
has to go through one full frame before we enable the TV port. Add a
vblank wait to intel_enable_tv() to make sure that happens.
Another approach was attempted by placing the vblank wait just after
enabling the port. The theory behind that attempt was that we need to
let the port stay enabled for one full frame before disabling it again
during load detection. But that didn't work, and we definitely must
have the vblank wait before enabling the port.

drm/i915: clear up wedged transitions
I've accidentally inverted the EIO/wedged handling in the fault
handler: We want to return the EIO as a SIGBUS only if it's not
because of the gpu having died, to prevent userspace from unduly
dying.
In my defence the comment right above is completely misleading, so fix
both.
v2: Drop the WARN_ON, it's not actually a bug to e.g. receive an -EIO
when swap-in fails.

The first command will remove the PCI device from the kernel's device
list so the second command won't see it right away. But as it registers
a PCI driver it'll see it on the third command. If the system happens to
match one of the DMI table entries we'll try to call a function in long
released memory and generate an Oops, at best.
Fix this by removing the bogus annotation.
Modpost should have caught that one but it ignores section reference
mismatches from the .rodata section. :/

Withtout this, ring initialization fails reliabily during resume with
[drm:init_ring_common] *ERROR* render ring initialization failed ctl 0001f001 head ffffff8804 tail 00000000 start 000e4000
This is not a complete fix, but it is verified to make the ring
initialization failures during resume much less likely.
We were not able to root-cause this bug (likely HW-specific to Gen4 chips)
yet. This is therefore used as a ducttape before problem is fully
understood and proper fix created, so that people don't suffer from
completely unusable systems in the meantime.

On most gen2-4 platforms the GTT can be (or maybe always is?)
inside the stolen memory region. If that's the case, reduce the
size of the stolen memory appropriately to make make sure we
don't clobber the GTT.

drm/i915: Reject >165MHz modes w/ DVI monitors
the driver started to filter out display modes which exceed the
single-link DVI 165Mz dotclock limits when the monitor doesn't report
itself as being HDMI compliant. The intent was to filter out all
EDID derived modes that require dual-link DVI to operate since we
don't support dual-link.
However the patch went a bit too far and also causes the driver to reject
such modes even when specified by the user. Normally we don't check the
sink limitations when setting a mode from the user. This allows the user
to specify any mode whether the sink reports to support it or not. This
can be useful since often the sinks support more modes than they report
in the EDID.
So relax the checks a bit, and apply the single-link DVI dotclock limit
only when filtering the mode list, and ignore the limit when setting
a user specified mode.

We only want to modifiy a single field in the userspace view of the
execbuffer command buffer, so explicitly change that rather than copy
everything back again.
This serves two purposes:
1. The single fields are much cheaper to copy (constant size so the
copy uses special case code) and much smaller than the whole array.
2. We modify the array for internal use that need to be masked from
the user.
Note: We need this backported since without it the next bugfix will
blow up when userspace recycles batchbuffers and relocations.

We want future generations to at least attempt to use all features, so
restrict the stolen memory disabling when vt-d is enabled to the
latest generation we have reports for. Which is a HSW per the original
report.
Also once we get a bit a hold of some of the mysterious framebuffer in
stolen memory issues that still haunt bugzilla, we should probably
drop this hack again and see what happens.

On non-LLC platforms, when changing the cache level of an object, we may
need to unbind it so that prefetching across page boundaries does not
cross into a different memory domain. This requires us to unbind
conflicting vma, but we did so iterating over the objects vma in an
unsafe manner (as the list was being modified as we iterated).

Apparently it doesn't work. X-tiled self-refresh works flawlessly
otoh. Apparently X still works correctly with linear framebuffers, so
might just be an issue with the initial modeset. It's unclear whether
this just borked wm setup from our side or a hw restriction, but just
disabling gets things going.

Media force wake get hangs the machine when the system is booted without
displays attached. The assumption is that (at least some versions of)
the firmware has skipped some initialization in that case.
Empirical evidence suggests we need to reset the media force wake
request register in addition to the render one to avoid hangs.

Depending on the SDVO output_flags SDVO may have multiple connectors
linking to the same encoder (in intel_connector->encoder->base).
Only one of those connectors should be active (ie link to the encoder
thru drm_connector->encoder).
If intel_connector_break_all_links() is called from intel_sanitize_crtc()
we may break the crtc connection of an encoder thru an inactive connector
in which case intel_connector_break_all_links() will not be called again
for the active connector if this happens to come later in the list due to:
if (connector->encoder->base.crtc != &crtc->base)
continue;
in intel_sanitize_crtc().
This will however leave the drm_connector->encoder linkage for this
active connector in place. Subsequently this will cause multiple
warnings in intel_connector_check_state() to trigger and the driver
will eventually die in drm_encoder_crtc_ok() (because of crtc == NULL).
To avoid this remove intel_connector_break_all_links() and move its
code to its two calling functions: intel_sanitize_crtc() and
intel_sanitize_encoder().
This allows to implement the link breaking more flexibly matching
the surrounding code: ie. in intel_sanitize_crtc() we can break the
crtc link separatly after the links to the encoders have been
broken which avoids above problem.

... our current modeset code isn't good enough yet to handle this. The
scenario is:
1. BIOS sets up a cloned config with lvds+external screen on the same
pipe, e.g. pipe B.
2. We read out that state for pipe B and assign the gmch_pfit state to
it.
3. The initial modeset switches the lvds to pipe A but due to lack of
atomic modeset we don't recompute the config of pipe B.
-> both pipes now claim (in the sw pipe config structure) to use the
gmch_pfit, which just won't work.

The PIPEA quirk is specifically for the issue with the PIPEB PLL on
830gm being slaved to the PIPEA PLL, and so to use PIPEB requires PIPEA
running. i845 doesn't even have the second PLL or pipe, and enabling
the quirk results in a blank DVO LVDS.

We have reports of heavy screen corruption if we try to use the stolen
memory reserved by the BIOS whilst the DMA-Remapper is active. This
quirk may be only specific to a few machines or BIOSes, but first lets
apply the big hammer and always disable use of stolen memory when DMAR
is active.

Currently we report through our error state only the rings that have
been initialised (as detected by ring->obj). This check is done after
the GPU reset and ring re-initialisation, which means that the software
state may not be the same as when we captured the hardware error and we
may not print out any of the vital information for debugging the hang.
This (and the implied object leak) is a regression from

Note that we are already starting to get bug reports with incomplete
error states from 3.13, which also hampers debugging userspace driver
issues.

The 'offset' field of the 'scatterlist' structure was wrongly
programmed with the offset value from the base of stolen area,
whereas this field indicates the offset from where the interested
data starts within the first PAGE pointed to by 'scattterlist'
structure. As a result when a new GEM object allocated from stolen
area is mapped to GTT, it could lead to an overwrite of GTT entries
as the page count calculation will go wrong, refer the function
'sg_page_count'.

In very rare cases (such as a memory failure stress test) it is possible
to fill the entire ring without emitting a request. Under this
circumstance, the outstanding request is flushed and waited upon. After
space on the ring is cleared, we return to emitting the new command -
except that we just cleared the seqno allocated for this operation and
trigger the sanity check that a request is only ever emitted with a
valid seqno. The fix is to rearrange the code to make sure the
allocation of the seqno for this operation is after any required flushes
of outstanding operations.
The bug exists since the preallocation was introduced in
commit 9d7730914f4cd496e356acfab95b41075aa8eae8
