The comment "not really needed" has been there since the inception
of git history. I have done build testing of all files that use
<linux/cdrom.h> with no problems found.
<linux/libata.h> includes <linux/cdrom.h>. I have also build tested
99% of the files that use <linux/libata.h> with no build issues found.

Several of the comments in include/linux/uaccess.h generate kerneldoc
warnings due to the use of "/**" markers on non-kerneldoc comments and
unmarked literal blocks. Bring these digressions into form and eliminate a
number of docs-build warnings. No changes to code or documentation

Pull CXL updates from Dave Jiang:
"The headline item is the first part of support for Dynamic Capacity
Devices (DCD). It covers flagging DCD support in the mailbox, reading
the dynamic capacity configuration from the device, gathering DSMAS
data for the DCD partitions, and configuring the dynamic capacity
interrupts. It also adds a documentation update and a cleanup that
enforces partition ordering. DCD is not enabled yet with these code
changes. Patches are applied to reduce the whole set in order to
relief the burden of very large patch set review.
Zero sized HDM decoders are now allowed, along with cxl_test support
for them. There is also a set of decoder hardening patches for switch
decoder enumeration. Latency calculations now account for link width
and use consistent units. The GPF timeout programming has been
reworked. The pull also has a number of misc patches.
A large number of bug fixes against pre-existing issues make up the
rest of the pull. Many of these were flagged by review of patches
posted to the mailing list by sashiko.
Also adding Richard Cheng as a reviewer (R) to the CXL sub-system"

Add a 'lazyio' mount option to the kernel Ceph client that enables
LazyIO globally for all regular file opens on a mount. This is the
kclient equivalent of the 'client_force_lazyio=true' config option
in the ceph-fuse userspace client.
When 'lazyio' is specified, CEPH_FILE_MODE_LAZY is automatically
added to every regular file's fmode at open time in ceph_open() and
ceph_atomic_open(), causing the I/O paths to request
CEPH_CAP_FILE_LAZYIO from the MDS. This permits buffered I/O via
the page cache even when multiple clients have the file open for
write — beneficial for HPC workloads that can tolerate relaxed
cache coherency.
The mount option is exposed as 'lazyio' / 'nolazyio' via the VFS
fsparam_flag_no mechanism and supports remount.

Inline data support has been deprecated in the CephFS MDS and is
being formally removed. Existing inline data can be migrated to
data pool objects via MDS scrub (see PR #44359).
Add CONFIG_CEPH_FS_INLINE_DATA (default n) to gate all inline data
code in the kclient. When disabled, CEPH_FEATURE_MDS_INLINE_DATA is
not advertised to the MDS, which will then refuse to open files that
still have inline data, returning -EPERM and preventing silent data
corruption that would occur if the kclient tried to read inline data
from OSD objects that do not contain it.
The conditional compilation is centralized in fs/ceph/super.h, where
static inline helpers make all the inline data code compile out
cleanly when the option is disabled, so that removing the option
later only touches that one place. ceph_inline_version() returns
CEPH_INLINE_NONE when the option is disabled, which makes every
version comparison in the disabled build constant-fold to false;
the stubbed out ceph_uninline_data() and ceph_fill_inline_data() are
then unreachable.
The MDS still carries inline_version + inline_data on the wire, so
the reply and cap grant parsers keep consuming those fields even
with the option disabled, only skipping them, to keep the decode
pointer in sync for the fields that follow.
This config option will be kept for a transitional period to
allow existing CephFS deployments to migrate inline data via
MDS scrub. Once the migration period ends, the option and all
inline data code will be permanently removed.
Users upgrading from an older Ceph release should ensure all inline
data has been migrated before deploying a kclient with this option
disabled:
1. Enable and run MDS scrub to uninline existing data
2. Disable inline_data on the filesystem:
ceph fs set <fs> inline_data false --yes-i-really-really-mean-it

Pull nfsd updates from Chuck Lever:
"Jeff Layton extended the netlink listener-set operation so that
a management daemon can register NFSD's programs with rpcbind
itself. This prevents an unresponsive rpcbind from stalling NFSD
administration for a minute at a time.
Bulk delegation recall now adjusts the number of delegations it
wants returned, based on memory pressure. The previous mechanism
was spec-conformant, but it requested all delegations to be
returned at once. Clients are free to return few or none in such
cases, but requesting smaller batches of delegations is more
neighborly.
In preparation for handling TLS KeyUpdate, the server's TCP
receive path has been reworked to handle control records. In the
process, the use of sock_recvmsg was replaced with ->read_sock,
which contends less with other holders of the socket lock.
NFSv2 XDR code is now generated by xdrgen, which mechanically
generates the encoders and decoders from the RPC language
specification for the protocol. Replacing hand-built XDR code
makes prototyping new protocol elements faster, reduces errors,
and improves memory safety. Replacement of XDR code for newer NFS
versions will continue in subsequent releases of NFSD.

small optimizations. Sincere thanks to all contributors,

Add struct consw.con_unblank as inverse operation to con_blank.
If implemented invoke con_blank to turn the console from blanked to

blank parameter of con_blank receives a VESA blank mode from enum
vesa_blank_mode instead of the hybrid unblank/blank values it has
used so far.

functions to enable quad I/O mode in many different ways. That's
now consolidated in one generic function.
- Rework the SFPD handling. It used to be only parsed for flashes
present in the in-kernel database which had any of the multi-I/O
bit set - or with the addition of generic flash driver for any
unknown flashes. This left a gap where SFDP wasn't handled and it
turns out newer flashes (with SFDP support) will reused IDs of just
these old flashed. With the rework, SFDP is tried to be parsed for
any flashes and will amend the information which is already present
in the in-kernel database.
- Increase SFDP size limit to 16KiB. There are flashes which have
some larger gaps between tables and thus exceeds the former 4KiB
limit.
- Flash fixups are getting more and more common. Due to this, the
fixups are now a separate list (per manufacturer) instead of being
attached to a specific flash. A new .match() callback makes them
more flexible, when one is applied.
- Support 1-1-8 and 1-8-8 modes with larger flashes which need 4byte

Pull firewire updates from Takashi Sakamoto:
- Guarantee asynchronous packet and transaction callbacks in process
context
Both the 1394 OHCI driver and the core transaction layer have been
changed to guarantee that asynchronous packet and transaction
callbacks are invoked in process context. In v6.17, the execution
context depended on the transaction destination: callbacks for
transactions destined for remote nodes were invoked from a workqueue,
whereas callbacks for transactions destined for the local node or
terminated due to internal errors were invoked in the transaction
initiator's context.
All such callbacks are now guaranteed to execute in process context,
eliminating the need to account for different execution contexts when
implementing callback functions.
- Fill kerneldoc for transaction layer
The above change guarantees a consistent execution context for packet
and transaction callbacks, making it possible to document their
execution context in kerneldoc.
- Enable compiler-based context analysis for the transaction layer
The core transaction layer is sufficiently complex that
compiler-based context analysis can help detect invalid call paths.
- Fix a reference count leak in the cdev layer
A reference count leak was reported when a user space application
delegated isochronous resource management. This issue has now been
fixed.
- Add KUnit tests for the configuration ROM parser and generator
In recent years, questions have been raised about how the
configuration ROM parser and generator handle boundary conditions and
edge cases. KUnit tests have been added to verify their behavior in
these situations. KUNIT_STATIC_STUB_REDIRECT is used to stub the
transaction responder so that it returns the configuration ROM
contents.
- Misc fixes for kerneldoc and nosy-dump application

An open-coded iterator can return a struct pointer borrowed from its
current element. The verifier has not tied such results to iterator
state since the task_vma iterator was introduced, so a saved result
can still be used after destroy. Commit bee9ef4a40a27 ("bpf: switch
task_vma iterator from mmap_lock to per-VMA locks") also made next
release the protection of the prior element. A later snapshot
conversion made vm_file explicitly borrowed from that element.
Associate non-RCU, non-acquired struct results with the iterator
reference by default. Invalidate dependents before next forks its
NULL and non-NULL paths, while retaining the iterator itself. Let
destroy propagate child-reference errors. Add KF_ITER_RET_INDEPENDENT
for results that outlive the current element, preserving existing
RCU and acquired-reference rules.
Trusted pointer field loads also need to preserve the source lifetime.
Loading a trusted field does not acquire a reference to the pointed-to
object. Set the field pointer's parent_id to the source's reference ID
if the source is referenced, or inherit its parent_id if it is borrowed.
This is a generic rule, including accesses unrelated to iterators. For
example, the following access is now rejected:
file = bpf_get_task_exe_file(task);
if (!file)
return 0;
inode = file->f_inode;
bpf_put_file(file);
ino = inode->i_ino;
The inode pointer borrows the file's lifetime. Releasing the acquired
file reference removes that lifetime guarantee, so the verifier must
invalidate the derived inode pointer as well. This does not imply that
bpf_put_file() immediately frees the file or inode. Reading the inode
while the file reference is held remains valid. Fields with independent
RCU protection retain their existing lifetime rules.
For an iterator result, the same propagation keeps trusted fields such
as vm_file and f_inode tied to the current element. Propagate the backing
object's lifetime through dynptr construction too, so its descendants
remain in the invalidation graph. Share the invalidation traversal
between next and release, so advancing the iterator preserves its own
reference.

Pull io_uring updates from Jens Axboe:
"The bulk of this is a big robustness pass over cancelation, io-wq,
timeouts, and poll. Outside of that:
- Large series from Josef hardening the cancelation, io-wq, timeout,
poll, and wait paths. Fixes for lost wakeups and lost cancels as
io-wq arms poll/timeouts, work stranding on worker exit, CQE32
resize handling, napi entry timeouts, and a pile of smaller
correctness issues across the board
- Rework of how io-wq posts completions, posting from the last
request reference and dropping the request file before the
completion, and running ring release cancelations synchronously -
canceling and waiting for all in-flight requests and dropping
registered files and buffers at release time
- Don't charge the SQ/CQ rings or provided buffer rings to
RLIMIT_MEMLOCK, which the region API conversion had started doing
- Split io_uring_cmd_set_res() out from io_uring_cmd_done() so a
command can set the result from its ->end_io() handler, used by
nvme
- CQE32 ring fixes for the free entry check, aux CQE big_cqe zeroing,
and the dummy skip CQE
- Timeout fixes for sequence handling and multishot updates
- net fixes for MSG_TRUNC buffer overconsumption and keeping recv
buffer select length within MAX_RW_COUNT
- Wake real-time waiters from hard interrupt context
- Don't spin on local work an exiting task can't run, reachable by an

shrinker_info_unit holds BITS_PER_LONG atomic_long_t of deferred work plus
a one-word bitmap, 520 bytes on 64-bit. kzalloc_node() takes it from
kmalloc-1k, so almost half of every unit is padding.
Allocate the units from a cache of their own, sized to the unit. The
cache is not cache-line aligned: the counters of a unit already share
cache lines between shrinkers, and aligning the unit would only keep
neighbouring units off each other's boundary line, at the cost of part of
the saving.

So far the assumption has been that mm->mm_lock_seq overflow is benign,
resulting only in readers spuriously falling back to the mmap lock, however
it turns out that this was an unsafe assumption.
If a VMA can be spuriously considered write locked that means read lock
exclusion does not take place, and thus a VMA can end up write-locked with
concurrent readers.
Since overflow only occurs every 2^31 write lock/unlock cycles, resolve the
issue by resetting every VMA's vma->vm_lock_seq each time such an overflow
occurs.
This is done in vma_end_write_all(), which is called when the mmap write
lock is released, i.e. in mmap_write_unlock() and mmap_write_downgrade().
Care must be taken, as resetting the sequence count at overflow means
changing the seqcount of VMAs which are already attached and observable.
The mm's seqcount is guaranteed to be odd when a write lock is held, and
thus any write locked VMA will have an odd seqcount assigned.
Therefore resetting to an even value prevents spurious write locks, since
these can only occur with the mmap write lock held, at which point the mmap
seqcount will be odd.
However, vma_start_read() also checks vma->vm_lock_seq == mm->mm_lock_seq,
bailing if so (indicating a write lock).
This would cause any even reset value chosen to prevent VMA read locks from
being taken - avoid this by also checking whether the VMA seqcount is odd
before bailing on the read lock.
So far, vma->vm_lock_seq has defaulted to UINT_MAX, but this has been
unnecessary since commit e5e7fb278e59 ("mm: convert mm_lock_seq to a proper
seqcount"), since this is assigned when the VMA is still detached, and
cannot be observed.
Therefore perform both reset and initialisation of vma->vm_lock_seq by
simply setting vma->vm_lock_seq to zero.
The reset, performed in __mm_reset_vma_seqcounts(), only needs to
WRITE_ONCE() the value.
However the read of vma->vm_lock_seq in vma_start_read() needs to have
acquire semantics to pair with the smp_wmb() in do_raw_write_seqcount_end()
so a reader reading a reset value also observes VMA modifications made
under the write lock.
Since all VMA write locks were just released and the mmap write lock is
still held, there are no concurrent VMA writers.
Concurrent VMA readers are unaffected. New VMA readers observe either zero,
never a write lock, or the prior seqcount, behaving as before the reset.
Since this only occurs every 2^31 write lock/unlock cycles, the time taken
to update all VMAs is considered to be acceptable.
Also update comments, documentation and VMA userland tests to reflect the
change.
User facing effects are - dangerous races that could cause memory
corruption or NULL pointer derefences (especially on page table traversal)
are avoided.

snapshot_set_swap_area() unpins the previously selected swap device and
pins the new one in two separate swap_lock critical sections. In the gap
between them, swapoff() observes SWP_HIBERNATION cleared, bypasses the
guard, and tears down the device, reopening the race the SWP_HIBERNATION
pin was meant to close. The window is reachable on any
SNAPSHOT_SET_SWAP_AREA call after the snapshot device is opened for
hibernation, and on any retry after the resume path's first selection.
Add repin_hibernation_swap_type(), which looks up the new device, clears
the old SWP_HIBERNATION flag and sets the new one under a single swap_lock
acquisition. The same-device case is short- circuited so userspace can
re-select the same swap area without tripping WARN_ON_ONCE and -EBUSY.
Switch snapshot_set_swap_area() to the new helper.
A failed lookup now preserves the previous pin instead of dropping it, so
a bad SNAPSHOT_SET_SWAP_AREA leaves the prior selection intact. The open
and release paths keep using pin_hibernation_swap_type() and
unpin_hibernation_swap_type().
The race was identified during AI-assisted review of the SWP_HIBERNATION
pinning series.

When updating a VMA, vma_prepare() unconditionally removes it from its
rmap interval trees under the rmap lock, and vma_complete() reinserts it
before releasing the lock.
This is wholly unnecessary if its page offset (file rmap) or anonymous
page offset (anon rmap) is unchanged.
So, track whether they will change in the newly introduced
vp->file_pgoff_unchanged and vp->anon_pgoff_unchanged fields, and use them
to determine whether to remove the VMA or not.
The rmap lock keeps things safe as no rmap walks can concurrently occur
during the operation.
Additionally, some architectures (arm, parisc, nios2, csky) have dcache
flush rmap walkers which take only flush_dcache_mmap_lock(), which is
likewise held across the operation.
If the VMA remains in the tree, it's necessary to keep the augmented
rb_subtree_last field updated to reflect its changed range.
Provide mapping_rmap_tree_[pre, post]_update() and anon_rmap_tree_[pre,
post]_update_vma() (replacing the existing logic in the anonymous case) to
handle both the changed and unchanged cases.
For the anon rmap case, with CONFIG_DEBUG_VM_RB set, avc->cached_vma_last
is also updated when propagating in place.
When performing a VMA shrink or a split where the VMA is the lower one,
the page offset cannot change, so set the flags unconditionally in these
cases.
When merging VMAs the page offset is unchanged only in some cases, so
update init_multi_vma_prep() to set the flags only if the page offsets
remain the same.
Finally, while we're here, also update expand_upwards() similarly.
These changes ultimately result in less rmap lock contention.

Patch series "mm: implement and use vma_has_anon_rmap(), silence KCSAN".
Provide a function to abstract the common task of checking whether a VMA
has an anonymous reverse mapping associated with it.
In the first patch, const-ify vma_assert_stabilised() and related
functions so that vma_has_anon_rmap() can reference a const vma pointer.
In the second patch, introduce vma_has_anon_rmap().
Finally in the third patch, update comments referencing anon_vma to
instead reference the anon rmap to abstract this conceptually to avoid
confusion.
There are still other functions which reference anon_vma directly, those
can be addressed in a follow up.
This patch (of 3):
The vma pointers are not modified in any of these functions so make it
official by const-ify them.
Propagate this throughout the call stack.
No functional change intended.

Every user of the VM_SPECIAL or VMA_SPECIAL_FLAGS has now been converted to
predicates which explicitly express what is actually being checked for
rather than the nebulous concept of possessing 'special' VMA flags.
In any case 'special' is not so special a term of art in mm - it includes
VDSO/VVAR mappings, special in the sense of vm_normal_folio() and probably
other cases too.
Therefore make things less special by eliminating these now unused flags.

Introduce vma[_flags]_is_mm_backed() for the purposes of identifying
mappings which are mm-managed and whose contents were placed there by core
mm's own fault path - rather than a custom ->fault handler.
Mappings not managed by core mm do not fall into this category, as they are
populated by their owner, and nor of course does memory-mapped I/O.
We exclude fixed mappings as these have a layout core mm cannot assume
ordinary fault semantics over.
hugetlb mappings are fixed mappings, but core mm owns them entirely, so
they are explicitly carved out as mm-backed, as the MADV_DODUMP check
already does.
Use this functionality to update the madvise MADV_DODUMP check to test for
this rather than open-coding it.
Also update vma_flags_can_merge() so it is written in terms of
vma_flags_is_mm_backed() - all mm-backed mappings can be merged except
hugetlb mappings, whose flags and fields do not completely describe them.
Also update __thp_vma_allowable_orders() to use vma_is_mm_backed() rather
than testing for mergeability, which is irrelevant to this function.
This replaces the VM_SPECIAL check which means it no longer checks for
VMA_IO_BIT, however this is safe as we have established the invariant that
mm-managed mappings may not set VMA_IO_BIT, so we implicitly include
these.
No functional change intended.

The is_vm_hugetlb_page() predicate is badly named - the mapping can span
more than a page and it is inconsistent with other VMA predicates that
typically are prefixed by vma_.
Rename to vma_is_hugetlb() for consistency, and while we're here update
some VM_BUG_ON_VMA() to VM_WARN_ON_ONCE_VMA() as to avoid unnecessary
oopses.
No functional change intended.

This header really makes little sense - every place it is included mm.h is
also included, and the header itself includes mm.h, so it does nothing to
reduce header size.
It also oddly does an #ifdef around checking VMA_HUGETLB_BIT, however
VMA_HUGETLB_BIT is unconditionally available, and will never be set if
hugetlb is not enabled.
Simply remove the header, eliminate the odd ifdeffery and place the
predicates in mm.h.
The naming of these predicates is odd, but to keep changes separate, we
will address this in a separate patch.
The file was never put into MAINTAINERS so there's no change required
there.
No functional change intended.

We have now made it such that every driver which sets VMA_IO_BIT marks it
as not mm-managed.
However, vma_flags_is_mm_managed() still checks for VMA_IO_BIT and, if
set, treats the mapping as not mm-managed. This was previously required to
handle drivers which set VMA_IO_BIT but none of the other flags which
identify a mapping as not mm-managed.
We have now established that a driver which sets VMA_IO_BIT must also set
one of those flags, so the VMA_IO_BIT check is redundant.
So remove the VMA_IO_BIT check in vma_flags_is_mm_managed() and update
mmap_validate_vma_flags() to use vma_flags_is_mm_managed() rather than
open-coding the VMA_PFNMAP_BIT, VMA_MIXEDMAP_BIT check.
This change means that vma[_flags]_can_merge() doesn't check VMA_IO_BIT any
longer (which is now redundant) as it calls vma_flags_is_mm_managed().
Now that the predicate means precisely VMA_PFNMAP_BIT or VMA_MIXEDMAP_BIT,
also use it at the other sites which open-code that pair, so the intent is
stated rather than the flags, with no functional change:
zap_special_vma_range() only zaps mappings which are not mm-managed, as
drivers use it to tear down ranges they established themselves.
The mprotect() arch PFN modification check applies to mappings not managed
by core mm, which may map PFNs without struct pages.
NUMA balancing skips VM_MIXEDMAP mappings having already excluded VM_IO
and VM_PFNMAP mappings via vma_migratable(), so it skips exactly the
mappings not managed by core mm - say so.
Finally, update the VMA userland merge 'special' flag tests to no longer
assert that VMA_IO_BIT prevents merge as VMA_PFNMAP_BIT, VMA_MIXEDMAP_BIT
now suffices.

This determines whether a VMA cannot be expanded or merged because what
they mapped was determined to be a set size at mmap time.
This typically refers to mappings not managed by core mm, however
VMA_DONTEXPAND_BIT
is not reliably set alongside VMA_PFNMAP_BIT or VMA_MIXEDMAP_BIT, so we
must explicitly test for this for now.
We also explicitly test for VMA_PFNMAP_BIT as VMA_DONTEXPAND_BIT may not be
set for VMA_PFNMAP_BIT's despite the one implying the other.
Use this predicate in vma_flags_can_merge() and in check_prep_vma() in the
mremap logic testing to see if mremap() can expand the VMA. The criteria
for khugepaged and MADV_COLLAPSE eligibility in
__thp_vma_allowable_orders() are precisely those for mergeability, so use
vma_can_merge() there (with an expanded comment).
This obviates the need for the VM_NO_KHUGEPAGED mask, so remove it.
Hugetlb VMAs remain excluded from khugepaged as hugetlbfs always sets
VMA_DONTEXPAND_BIT.
Also update the userland VMA tests to reflect the change.
No functional change intended.

Rather than referring to VMA flags with uncertain meaning, add a new
predicate that explicitly describes what absence of the VMA_PFNMAP_BIT and
VMA_MIXEDMAP_BIT flags means, and then refer to that function for
determining VMA mergeability.
If neither of these flags are set, that means the contents of the mapping
are managed by core mm.
Otherwise they are instead owned by some other kernel component, usually a
driver: the memory may be MMIO, kernel-allocated pages or even ordinary
pages the driver maps itself, but core mm must not populate, reclaim,
migrate, copy-on-write or merge the range itself.
We initially also treat VMA_IO_BIT as implying a mapping is not mm-managed,
as by implication it cannot be. (mlock() also sets VMA_IO_BIT transiently
on ordinary VMAs while locking them, which is addressed later in this
series.)
However the intent is to in future remove this, as no mapping should be
marked as an I/O mapping without also being marked with VMA_PFNMAP_BIT.
This forms the basis of further work intended to improve how we express VMA
properties such as this.
Also update the VMA userland tests to reflect the change.
No functional change intended.

The existing kernel page mapping mmap actions allow for partial and full
mapping of an array of struct page pointers.
However some drivers require the mapping of discontiguous ranges. Permit
this by providing discontig_kernel_page_ops which allows a driver to
specify how the operation should begin and how batches of pages should be
retrieved.
It uses the minimum exposed interface to do so, providing address, page
offset and both vm_private_data state and a local private state object.
ops->init can establish state for the operation, and ops->get outputs the
pages to map and their count. Should an error arise the core unmaps the
VMA, invoking vm_ops->close, which is therefore where any state established
by ops->init is released.
Also update the compatibility layer to do this too via
compat_mmap_action_abort().
Batches may not exceed the VMA, but may map less than its full range in
case the driver wishes to allow the user to map an area larger than the
available data.
To use it, users invoke mmap_action_map_discontig_kernel_pages() with
initial local private state and a set of operations.
Users can then use one of the provided helper functions to perform an
action:
* discontig_kernel_map_abort() - Abort and leave the mapping as it has
been accumulated so far.
* discontig_kernel_map_page() - Map a single page, or a compound page given
its head page, as 1..N contiguous pages.
* discontig_kernel_map_pages() - Map a struct page ** array of a specified
count, mapping only those pages which fit in the VMA.
The userland VMA tests are updated accordingly.

MMAP_MAP_KERNEL_PAGES is a mouthful, discard the MAP_ as that's implied by
MMAP.
Also while we're here delete useless comments for mmap actions whose names
clearly indicate what they are for.
Also update the userland VMA tests to reflect this change.
No functional change intended.

There's no reason to export the symbols for these functions which are only
called from internal mm logic, additionally there's no reason for them to
be declared in mm.h.
This patch therefore removes the exports and moves the declarations to
mm/internal.h.
No functional change intended.
